Re:PQ, Gamespy et al.
How about getting your facts straight. Dakota hasn't worked at GameSpy for about 2 years now. And how did he "sell out"?
Okay I guess I missed that, but can you please point me in the direction of the employee listing at Gamespy? Not really public knowledge, is it?
Dakota traded Captured.com for a career with Gamespy. Captured wasn't paying any bills, and Gamespy did. How isn't that selling out? Obviously he had his reasons for leaving, but it still was a financial choice -- wasn't it?
Selling out isn't always a bad thing. Sometimes it just makes sense -- but it's still considering finances over art. Dakota didn't have time to run Captured, and I think GSN pulled the plug because CTF readership fell off. It went from being a kind of early blog to being a news site, to being a p1mp subsection of PQ, to being DOA. Is Dakota happy with that lifecycle? I doubt it.
But the bulk of my comment was simply a reply to the person who wanted to know how video game journalism has progressed, and it's really on point in my opinion. The whole games industry has gone very corporate/bottom line, and I think it sucks.
Looks like Dakota did leave GSN, and from his sig, here is where it looks like he went. If anything, this proves he sort of felt like getting away from GSN, and seeing that he's not doing games related stuff, maybe he had a change of heart? -
BF2
The geniuses over at EA Games won't even allow you to change your on-line nickname for Battlefield 2.

Too bad the installation is failing for people...
A lot of people (myself included) are having issues with the second installation disc. It basically just won't read in any CD drive I can get my hands on. And I'm not alone.
If this turns out to be a result of SecureROM, I'm going to send my box back to Activision with a piece of poo inside. -
Re:kind of ridiculous
Well in order to play with ALL of the weapons that are included in BF2 ( one weapon for each class is "locked") you have to earn enough "Rank" to unlock them.. you can only play on ranked servers to earn "rank" points, and you can only host a ranked server if you pay EA or one of their "authorized server providers" 8 dollars per slot.
With BF1942, anyone could host a server or mod of 1942, now you can host a free server but who wants to play on a server where their play doesn't count towards their "rank" and thus won't allow them to unlock their weapons?
Also you have to create an "online account" where you give them your email address, this information can be given out to any one they want for any purpose (it states this in their EULA)...
Check out the planet battlefield forums and you'll see what i'm talking about:

Re:Yes, it does have MP coop - sort of...
There's also a mod that allows some 32 player coop maps - here.
This mod is a little unstable, but a lot of fun. Excellent for flying practice as well. -
Re:Needs patching.. badly.
Soundblaster Audigy 2 (in 4 channel mode)
As it turns out, there appears to be a serious problem with how DICE coded EAX handling, which is purported to be fixable by following the instructions in this thread.
There's also a beta Audigy 2 ZS driver which is supposed to improve BF2 performance. (It's the second "Download Now" link from the top.)
As for missing a lot with MP5 at short range, I've come to the conclusion that the game can have a lot of packet loss, even while the ping time is low. Mostly due to people trying to run servers on inferior hardware, and the game's problematic memory management. -
It's Painful....Dice/EA hired on the Trauma Studios (Desert Combat) team for "consulting". Apparently they didn't listen much....
The game has it's good points, but it feels massively rushed to production, and shipped with some glaring bugs. However, even with all the issues I list below, it's still FUN, but very frustrating at times. I figured this would bide my time until Call of Duty 2 comes out in October.
- No COOP! Yes, you're screwed. There are hacks to help you out, but Dice/EA decided that COOP wasn't to be.
- There's only ONE kind of map mode - no CTF, no others whatsoever.
- Many of my friends bomb to the desktop on a continual basis. It's a huge point of contention in the BF2 world right now.
- 1999 called, and it wants it's game browser back. Its incredibly bad in-game browser is beyond reproach, probably because it's based off of Gamespy technology. No favorites, no way to store or pull up previously played servers, slow refresh times, etc.
- There is a new "punish" system in the game, which is being terribly misused. For instance, if you mine areas as an engineer, they show up with giant red skull/crossbones warning your teammates that there are mines in the area. Yet should they roll over them and die, they can "punish" you, which deducts your score, and can sometimes boot you from the server. Other tricks are to run in front of vehicles, getting yourself killed and then punish the people - getting them kicked from the server. It's just stupid.
- Flying planes in BF2 means you really just take your joystick and plant it in a circle - the game maps are far too small to get any feeling of flying. The stingers that are supposed to provide ground troops some protection are woefully underpowered, and it can take *5* of them to bring down a plane.
- The point system for unlocking weapons (hello developers, aren't we over this stupid crap yet?) is silly. It's being exploited by some clans and groups of people who go off on a map, sit in a corner, and knife/revive each other until their points are ridiculous, thus giving them new ranks and abilities.
- "Bunny Hopping" is still somehow in the game, which everyone has complained about since time began. Just try carrying about 75lbs of gear, and then hopping around like a bunny while shooting your M203 grenade launcher. I'm sure it's a tactic recommended by most modern armies. There's no excuse for this.
- Still no scripting/modding tools for the community.
If you want to really get a feel for how the game is, just go to these forums and listen in: http://www.forumplanet.com/planetbattlefield/ I haven't listed even a smidgen of the valid complaints people have listed online.

Nothing new
The forums now seem to have imploded under the strain of complaints.
How is this a surprise? When Half-Life 2 was finally released, Valve employees and the moderators at the Steam Powered forums actually disabled the forum due to the onslaught of complaints. It was left up to fan forums like Planet Half-Life to take the complaints. Even though none of the fan forums can do anything to help. I believe that first time, Valve claimed their servers can't handle the load. That's kind of puzzling considering the kind of money Valve is pulling in. Now, not for the last time, Valve and the Steam forums has shrinked away from their angry customers and shoved the load onto other forums.
This kind of behavior is just a tip of the iceberg. They've done all sorts of things to piss off the community. Granted, the community at large hasn't been very kind to Valve Software (remember ANON?). But, Valve created the very community that they're fighting now. What did they expect? They got their money, now the community wants their game. Come Hell or Bill Gates, community is going to get it.
Valve software is even on record at the BBB.

No, the Reviews are right.
"When all of these sources start giving it the highest or nearly highest scores possible, it does make you think that this is the real deal."
While that may be true, I can tell you (because I have it in my hot little hands at this very moment) that it exceeds the original in nearly every aspect from a technical standpoint. Fact. The only things I can possibly complain about at the moment is texture loading during cut scenes. Beyond that, it tells a story as good as halflife did and looks 100x better (than the original). I posted some more detailed thoughts here.
If we can assume that A) You like FPSs and B) You enjoyed Halo to some degree, then believing the reviews no longer becomes a question. It's a great game. -

performance increase
You have propaply allready seen this, but anyway here goes (don't know if it works on Linux though - but cannot see why it shouldn't):
The following commands control the image cache, which if enabled and set correctly can help smooth FPS and may also boost performance:
image_useCache [0,1] - If set to 1, uses background loading to cache image information. This may not necessarily improve framerate performance, but it does assist in smoothing out frame rates and reducing loading pauses. Note that the image_cacheMinK (see below) size must be raised from its default otherwise the game will crash when using this setting. Once this setting is enabled, the actual cache value is set in the image_cacheMegs setting below.
image_cacheMegs [Megabytes] - Determines the maximum amount of system memory to allocate to temporary loading of full-sized precompressed images if the cache is enabled by setting image_useCache to 1. Note that since this caching only applies to precompressed images, using the Ultra Quality setting will render this setting useless, since at Ultra quality no texture compression is used. Since a cache is only a temporary holding area, and not the place where the entire game is meant to reside, do not raise this value to something extremely high as that will simply reduce the available memory for the rest of Doom 3. Try a value of 128MB for those with 512MB of system RAM, and if you have more than 1GB of RAM, you can try a higher value like 196MB or 256MB for example. Do not set this to half your system RAM or some other monstrous amount.
image_cacheMinK [KiloBytes] - This setting determines the minimum size in KB for precompressed image files to be loaded into the cache. To make sure most image files can be loaded, and to also prevent a system crash when enabling caching, select a value like 3072 to start with. Raising this setting may improve caching, but it may also hinder caching if most textures are below the size you specify, so don't just raise this value for the hell of it.

This just in, GSI's response
GameSpy's official response.
---
GameSpy welcomes any and all help finding genuine bugs and security breaches on our servers. What we don't welcome are people publishing security hacks that have the potential to hurt our products. GameSpy products are supposed to be about having fun, but hacks and Denial of Service (DoS) attacks take the fun out of it. It doesn't simply hurt GameSpy; it hurts every person playing games with our products.
What this person did was more than reverse engineer two of our products, RogerWilco and GameSpy3D-he was describing our backend services and publishing CDkey generation information without letting us know. At first we welcomed his bug alerts. We responded to him immediately and thanked him for his bug research, as we do with everyone who contacts us with bug information. We even sent him a thank you letter, which we have on file.
But then we found out he was also publishing how to brute force our RogerWilco CDkeys and had published hacks on other game CDkeys as well. He was doing more than reporting bugs; he was publishing game pirating techniques. He published how to attack our network. This is not the way ethical security researchers operate. It was at this point that we stopped our communication with him and asked him to remove the materials in question.
When we were first contacted, this person was associated with a small software security company. They asked if GameSpy wanted to pay a "consulting fee" to fix the hacks. However, these were not bugs; it was information about how our products work. When we brought this to the software security company's attention, they disavowed their relationship with that person and removed him from their servers.
Let me repeat-we welcome any bug alerts and will fix any and all security breaches that come to our attention. We find and fix nearly all of them before any external sources find them. It's all about playing games and having fun, people! That's why we do what we do! However, we won't pay "consulting fees" to people who create CDkey hacks of our proprietary software, then post the results if we don't pay them.
Gamers trust us. We have to protect them from any and all attacks on our network that affect gamers.

...and this is a classic Activision/ID ploy
This is a copy of a letter I sent to ID and Activision a few months ago. These companies are loosing players in droves and the companies don't even care. Check out the PB forums and see the comments from all the irate players:
What happened to the Quake (2/3) Series?
This is basically an open letter to id Software and how little importance they place in their products. They are loosing players in drovers and their reputation is going down the toilet.
But first a little intro.
I began playing Quake 2 in 95 when some friends at work were having a DM/CTF LAN party. Needles to say I was hooked. I went out and bought the game and downloaded Map after Map. I Became pretty good and eventually became one of the best Q2 CTF players around .
The Q2 CTF MOD was, at the time one of the most innovative MOD's around and pretty much dictated what a Capture the flag Mod should be like. I enjoyed playing on the old YYZ CTF servers and testing new maps from some of the most awesome mappers at the time (Hafhead and gizm0 to name a few). Everyone was into the games, teamplay was amazing and cheaters were nonexistent because Id was on top of various hacks (wallhacking excluded).
Eventually, my scores started to go down and I was ending up at the middle of the pack at the end of rounds. I began spectating people and noticed that people were gibbing enemies from the side and from behind them and discovered the world of bots.
What is a bot?
Some n00bs may get confused by the definition.
There are two types of bots. 1) Used as an AI opponent on various servers to fill empty spaces on servers. These AI players have incredible aim. These bots are good if you want to practice aiming on the run. On Half-Life Servers you can tell bots by their ping. (They all have a ping of 5)
2) Players use the bot components noted in #1 and integrates the auto aim features into their character and play on servers with the auto-aim components. I'm not going to post any of the bot links but they are out there. The people who started using the bots to enhance their own playing experience were mostly pretty stupid. They usually configured their bots to cover auto aiming in a filed of vision of 180 degrees or more around them. What this means is that if a player with a bot is looking forward and they hit fire, the bot will hit anything 180 degrees or more around them without turning. Secondly, they will usually just (if playing a CTF map) shoot and kill people and not work on any of the team objectives.
One more thing to note is one other problem with Quake 2 was that Q2 Servers were susceptible to IP Ping Floods and could take down a given server.
ID Software has a practice of Stopping builds and not releasing any further upgrades or practices. Not long after this, I started to loose interest in this game.
This was about time that the Q3 Arena Demos started to Circulate around. I began playing this game and reading the advanced press from various sources.
When I learned that CTF would loose all the cool components that made Q2 CTF a classic, it was time for me to find a new on-line game to play.
I wasn't drawn to this game very much. Sure there were some cool things about it but I wouldn't buy it ($59.99 was the price I believe) when Q3 Arena came out.
I chose to buy Half-Life and still play it to this day. It's an amazing game and Awesome Mods are still coming out to this day.
In my opinion, if a company can't take what made a given game famous and remove some or all components in a multiplayer game in the next release of a game, the company looses face in the gaming community. No One Lives Forever 2 is a good example of this. No One Lives Forever 2 was initially released without a DM or CTF mod (DM were later added with the first Service Pack after MANY irate customer complaints) the MODs that made NOLF1 a classic (running over people with snowmobiles rock!!!).
Bought Q3 Gold
I was at a Wal-Mart one day and noted Quake 3: Gold for $19.99 and bought it for the heck of it. I was interested in seeing what became of the game and was looking at what it took to map CTF maps. I've been looking into getting into mapping and wanted to do some research into what is needed to create Maps. I soon learned this was a kettle of workms that I probably should not have opened. Install a pain on XP Long story short, Quake 3: Gold has to be installed in a specific manner (it has to be a complete install) on the primary partition, in the default 'suggested' path (XP Pro) (this information was found on the Planequake forums ).
I soon found out that this install was to be the source of some of the issues I've been receiving.
I also use The All Seeing Eye to connect to games and because Q3 wouldn't work in the manner I wanted to install the game in, ASE wouldn't work.
PlanetQuake, Fileplanet other quake related files
Ok, when I played Quake2, planetquake.com was the place to go for all information, patches, maps, etc. I went back to this site and went to the Quake 3 section and began researching what would be needed to update my installation. The planetquake site was slow (I'm on a Cable Modem) to load and took a good 2 minutes to load a page. When I found a given page on maps or mapping, the links that were available were outdated or didn't work. There was no definitive 'manual' on how to find different mods or what programs are needed to map and which files were the most up to date. The links they provided (when they worked...which was about 10% of the time) were anything but helpful. I found four different mapping programs, none of which I've gotten to work correctly yet.
Planetquake has gotten lazy in their old age.
I found the Q3 MODS and patches on fileplanet but due to the new structure of the site (wait in line?!?!?...LAME!!!) I would have had to wait 4-5 days just to download a few files. I searched all over the net for the files I needed on other sites and was able to finish the download in a day.
Once I got some semblance of a Q3 install completed, I connected to a Q3 Server through ASE.
I remembered in the Q3 Install and patch that a program called Punkbuster which is a program that would detect cheaters and bot users. I thought 'cool' Id is doing something about bots and cheaters!'
Punkbuster a nightmare to upgrade
When installing and upgrading Punkbuster to current Standards I was not able to either through the game or using the command line update util. I found out that the problem with the PB (again on XP Pro in Non-Domain mode patched to current standards) is two fold:
1) The Quake Final Patch Release does not install a couple of key files for some reason or another (I found this out on the Planetquake forums ).
2) XP has a default behavior in that all system directories are 'read-only' and cannot be changed no matter what you try (Group Policies, ACLS, command line attributes, removing simple file sharing, etc.). In the case of Quake 3: Gold on XP, the default install dir is 'Program files' directory. Punkbuster needs to convert a couple of HTML files to binary and since the Read-Only Attributes are pushed from the Root Level of the primary partition, PB can't make the conversion.
New Cheats out that render Punkbuster Useless
I'm not going to go in depth about this but there are a couple of serious issues with some cheats out in the wild that PB can't handle at the moment. One issue seems to be addressed. The other is a bot that is undetectable by PB and is being used more and more on Q3 servers.
Players are furious that this issue isn't being addressed (myself included) by ID.
Read the Punkbuster Forums . Just about every single post is a rant about when/how is ID/Punkbuster will be addressing the current hacking issues and how ticked they are on how this issue isn't being addressed. (Side note: as of approx 27.Jan.2003 Punkbuster's forums have been removed and this site is taking the brunt of the PB issues.
I played on some of ThreeWave's CTF Servers (A killer MOD by the way)the other day and played against bot users. Some of these players are so stupid they turned their bot settings to 180 degrees or more and all players on my team wereable to spot this immediately.
Before I wrote this article I played a Vanilla CTF Game on a Q3 Server and there were a couple of players who were killing players in midair with weapons with the littlest fire power or hitting people in midair (from long distances) so they fell and cratered.
Needless to say, the team that I was on were trying and were winning in caps for a while (but not gibs) slowly left the server after many of the players on my team left (we started with 8 and when I left there were 3 versus 7 on the other team).
What's going on ID?!?!?
You're loosing players that used to be hardcore Q2/Q3 players in droves and they probably won't buy any more of your games due to the lack of attention you're giving to the cheaters and hackers.
Also, as a result of my experiences, I have since turned my mapping interests to the Half-Life Mod 'Day of Defeat' and the new James Bond Game '007: NightFire'.
I tell you one thing, I'll never buy another ID product again.
Software is easy to fix, reputations are next to impossible to fix. Get with the program ID!!!

Bug Reporting Forum
Just to let everybody know, there is a bug reporting forum available online here, just in case you come across a few of those pesky critters.

Kudos To HormelI think this shows a HUGE amount of class on the part of Hormel. They know that it won't hurt sales of their product, they're not suing anybody, or anything like that. They're being mature about it. I tip my hat to you, sirs.
For contrast, let me offer up this recent post from Ashtung Wolfenstein!:Wolfenstein E3 Trailer Never to See the Light of Day Again?
I wish FOX would follow Hormel's lead. They could learn something.
by Thrrrpptt! Friday, May 25, 2001Just got this email from Greg Goodrich, Executive Producer on Return to Castle Wolfenstein:
I've been reading quite a bit lately (on a number of different forums) that a lot of people are waiting to see the "Return To Castle Wolfenstein" E3 trailer. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like this is going to happen anytime soon. Let me explain.
When the trailer was originally cut for the show we used a music track called "Bishop's Countdown" from the movie "Aliens". We were told at the time that the rights to the music had been secured through Fox (owner of the "Aliens" property and the parent company of Fox Interactive). And they were. Activision had indeed paid a large sum of money for the rights and we were free and clear to make our trailer.
We fully expected to make it available via download after the show (as everyone else has recently done) but unfortunately this was not to be the case. Just hours before the start of E3 our fine friends from Fox Interactive were granted a special request to preview the trailer. Immediately following the private showing they decided it wasn't in their best interest to allow us to use the music or make it available for download. It was (and still is) the belief of Fox Interactive that by allowing us to do so would cause "confusion" in the marketplace between "Return To Castle Wolfenstein" and "Aliens vs. Predator 2". I'll leave it up to you to decide.
Hopefully, those of you who went to E3 enjoyed the trailer. It captured the essence of what "Wolfenstein" is shaping up to be and was edited with 100% game play footage from the current build of the game. Unfortunately, unless someone captured it via camcorder (from one of the monitors) and makes it available on their own accord, it will most likely never be shown again.
Man, that sucks. The trailer was really cool and I was looking forward to seeing it again. If anyone hears of its being released, make sure you send me a note. There is a thread on the 3DActionPlanet boards about this topic that you can reply to if you think Fox is just trying to pull a dirty trick to prevent the promotion of a rival game (or, for that matter, if you think they are NOT).
(For the record, this post isn't intended as off-topic or flamebait or trolling. Just an observation.)
