TCC can only generate x86 code anyway.

Actually the TinyCC site lists a speedchart at http://fabrice.bellard.free.fr/tcc/#speed measurements are done on a 500 MHz K6. That should give you a better idea than just estimating based on Turbo C 2.0

  So While I can see how it would be easy to poke fun at a Warp-Time bubble causing the intersection of the Enterprise (in all its incarnations simultaneously), Voyager, a Star Detroyer, and the Heart of Gold to land next Mount Doom; I would assure you that you cannot comprehend just how difficult it is to do without sounding ludicrous. I know because I did it!

A rear spoiler on a front wheel drive car still makes sense, it possibley makse *more* sense.

However, I am starting work on project that has a windows port. I would like to scriptify the backup of windows using dar. Dar is like tar, but compresses, and has the ability to split archives across media (like multiple CDRs). I have not actually used it to recover anything yet, even on linux. My plan is to make automated backups on linux and windows, that put the win32 and the linux executable on the CDR so I can be assured of being able to read it anywhere.

That said, I have some questions of my own for you windows weinies.

1) How do you download windows updates into some kind of file that you can put on a CD and use to update a computer that has no internet connection or is on a modem or so virused it crashes by itself after 10 minutes of thrashing on each bootup ? When I go to windowsupdate.com, it notices that I visiting it using Linux and refuses to help me at all.

2) Similarly, I want to download windows media player to put on the same non-connected machine. The windows site won't let me download anything, because again, it detects that I am visiting the site from Linux.

3) What's the best free software that will scan a machine and clean off all the viruses without de-configuring the sound card, returning the video to 640x480, etc ?

Try DesInstaller. It uses the .pkg receipt to remove programs cleanly.

Something odd about the MacOS Xbox screenshots - the last one has the 'About' window reporting 128MB of memory. Doesn't the Xbox have 64MB, then there's the overhead from the x86 operating system, PearPC etc.?

All I can think of is that it's not all allocated, and PearPC will be swapping stuff to the hard disk in a frenzy of IDE activity. The word 'particularly' comes to mind when thinking how slow the system will be.

(Oddly, I'm typing this while installing Windows 98 on my iBook, thanks to QEMU...)

I managed to get it to boot XP and even get on the internet. It's slow so I'd use Win 95 or Win 98 in real world situations. To transfer files, you can simply mount the images QEMU uses in the Mac OS X Finder and toss files in.

It is well understood by all real teachers. Other purposes for Taiji are minor ones, created by people in normal life, usually to nurse the body and make it more comfortable, or to attain fighting power and the dubious respect that confers. Unfortunately concentrating on health or self-defence may just make the mind more attached to the body, strengthen the ego and block internal development.

People in Korea are watching their fave soap operas, on-demand, over their TCP/IP broadband connectivity.

Then you have companies such as earthlink, covad, speakeasy who would love nothing more than to offer faster connections and more competitive prices but are prevented from doing so by the FCC's shitty policies.

I recently completed reading it from cover to cover, and while I didn't yet even code the examples myself (I plan to do that on my second read), every chapter felt like a series of revelations.

Highly recommended. Combine that with other books (Dive into Python looks very nice) and a few extra resources, and you and/or your students should be positively churning out code. A couple of nice ones:

Yep, same thing happened to me. So, I just installed PureFTPd, partially because there is a pretty god (and free) management frontend out there for it.

I'm using a Treo 600 on Verizon. Yeah, as a .Net developer I hated giving up my iPaq.

palmVNC works great at 150kbs. Certainly not what you could call "fast" but combined with UltraVNC on the server side you can scale the resolution (again, server-side) and it's usable.

VeriChat does AIM, Y!, MSN, and ICQ. Works great and by using SMS you appear always online. The phone vibrates (or plays a sound) when you get an IM, even if you aren't in VeriChat, or even if it's turned off.

An extra feature: PalmNet and a USB cable allow you to get a 150 kbps connection with your laptop anywhere in the US. Worked out great for me, I just moved and PacBell screwed up my DSL line. PalmNet is my only Intenet connection right now.

There is an MP3 player (pTunes) but I have an iPod so I don't use it. There is a built in web browser (Blazer) that is decent. I use it frequently. No email client - some carriers give you one, Verizon didn't. I bought Snapper Mail:

There is a GPS add on too. I might try it out one of these days. It would be nice if it was built in, but it would probably make the Treo too big.

The battery sucks. I have a charger at work, at home, and in the car. Used extensivly (phone calls, VNC sessions, lots of web browsing, etc.) I can make it one day, just barely, using just the home charger. Used REALLY heavily I don't even make it one day, I have to charge it on the way home, or during the day.

The screen sucks too. Not the resolution, I can deal with that. But in direct daylight it's very hard to see.

The keyboard is brilliant. I'll never use another type form-factor PDA again. When HP comes out with an iPaq that has this type of keyboard (and a built in phone) then I'll switch back to PocketPC. And yes, I've seen the latest iPaq with the snap on keyboard, I don't think that's going to be good enough.

I would say go for it now, who knows when the phone carriers will have the 650. It took Verizon over a year to get the 600.

You've just described the kind of connection that Free, the ISP described by grand-parent, is now offering where it can unbundle the local loop. No limits, static IP, reverse DNS if you want, servers: your problem, etc.

Except that it's not $200/mo, it's EUR29.90/mo (your former ISP might have lowered its prices, too).

These are all the free (as in beer) applications I use all the time:

WireTap: Save an audio file of any sound being played on the Mac by any other application.

DVDBackup: Great for backing up DVDs (while removing region coding, CSS encryption, and Macrovision encryption.) You'll still need Toast to burn the DVDs though.

PixelNhance: A must-have to tinker with the color/brightness/contrast etc. of your digital pictures.

Pixen: The best pixel-level editor on any platform.

MorphX: Morphs one image into another.

SnapNDrag: For screen captures (Grab is another basic screen capture utility that comes bundled with OSX).

Galerie: Puts your photos in a nice album-type gallery of web pages for being served by a web server.

LaTex Equation Editor and Tex Fog: The equation editors I use. Requires Tex/LaTex to be installed..

And if you are into LaTex, you'll also want CPlot: A parametric equation plotter.

CyberDuck: Open source S/FTP client. (Other FTP clients for OSX include osXigen, Transmit, Fetch, Fugu...).

Onyx: A must-have system utility.

MenuMeter: Another must-have system info utility. Excellent.

Books: A library software (book database).

Xnippets: A decent information organiser.

Carbon Copy Cloner: Backup software. (Donationware)

A few apps I have gladly paid money to use:

ChartSmith: Wonderfull for making all kinds of charts you have ever thought of (and some you haven't).

EvoCAM: Great app to record/play (or otherwise control) a Firewire/USB camera hooked to your Mac. Well worth the shareware price. (Also checkout their other offerings - ImageDV and VideoScope)

Intaglio: The 2D vector drawing/CAD program of my choice for simple CAD/ technical drawings.

Keynote: A (much better than) PowerPoint replacement from Apple. I use this all the time. (When it came out originally, I paid $$ for it; I heard Apple is bundling it with iLife now?)

Little Snitch: Keeps tabs on any stealth connections being made to/from your Mac, Shareware.

Intuem: Nice MIDI app with a clean interface. (GarageBand, one of Apple's iLife apps, is great for Audio/MIDI as well, but I find it limiting for my purpose because it does not do MIDI-out to my keyboard/synth.)

While this is true. As pointed out earlier OS excels in infrastructure. So OS can come up with some good infrastructure for those who do create games. We have game engines. We have a 3D modeling chain. We have sound. Looking at this guys Blender gallerie. You can see what we DON"T have, and for which the OSS model doesn't fit.

• Web browser - Chimera. Has an Athena-based X11 user interface, supports modern GIF images, and can retrieve data from HTTP, FTP and Gopher servers.
  
• C compiler - various exist, including the Tiny C Compiler. Other possibilities for porting include Sozobon C Compiler and Open Watcom.
  

These lists of banned books often provoke the idea of what is to be banned, or controlled for that matter. The other night, I stumbled across Vigilence, a Macromedia game where you watch cameras and try to catch people committing certain crimes. The catch is that while looking for one crime, another could be occuring, and failing to punish offenses, leads to more offenses.

As for books, at the end of my senior year in High School, I inadvertantly got Billions and Billions recommeded to be stocked in the school library. At least Sagan's works aren't being banned, but they do espouse ideas conservatives may find anethema (limitations of religion; abortion feasibility; science as the savior of the people; etc). Its a lot harder to get someone for ideas, than it is for mere words.

He's obviously someone that just doesn't get it. He must of missed out on the whole MP3 thing. In his rant, he talks about how no one he's run into has ever uploaded or downloaded an HD movie from the net. He fails to ask, however, if anyone's ever uploaded or downloaded a movie that came from HDTV sources.

Sure, while bandwidth is low, people won't be downloading HDTV content, but once there's fiber to the door that will change.

There's an ISP in my area (Free) that I'm switching to when I change apartments in two months. They offer a combo TV/DSL package that's 5Mbps down normally, and 2Mbps down when you're watching TV. A friend has it, and he says you can't tell the difference. (This is on PAL, which has a higher resolution, but a slightly slower refresh rate than NTSC.)

If I can stream regular quality content at 3Mbps, by the time we get to 30Mbps and up to the home, this guy's entire premise will be destroyed. I hate to bust his bubble, but the media kiosk has been tried, and tried again. No one's been able to get it to work, and with good reason. There are no consumer electronics players that take a standard format external drive.

If we could see hard drives that fit the new slot based version of PCIe, this might change (assuming you could get disk-based players like PVRs that use those instead of an internal hard drive), then you could ramp into the market, by providing added functionality to those already in need of disk space (easy upgrades), and service after you had seeded the market.

Seek out USB Snoop. You can monitor the goings-on between Windows and the USB device's driver. This probably won't replace a hardware USB debugger, but it's a good start.

Your usage description seems to advocate a more node-to-node based relationship between devices on the bus. An interface like firewire seems much better suited to your application than USB (master/slave). Though I suppose it could be considerably more complex to implement?

If you still need a hardware analyzer, this one looks more affordable.

NetBSD is working on Darwin binary compatibility. Something similar could be attempted by Linux.

According to their FAQ they are integrating a binary translator called QEMU. Their intention seems to be to have the wine libraries native and have them talk to the windows app (still x86) through qemu. This sounds like an interesting idea, especially if their additions to wine and qemu are integrated into the main trees. Then linux on other architectures could likely take advantage (if qemu has been/is ported to that architecture).
