Why is it so hard?
Why is having a voter-verified ballot so hard? Here is how to do right:
1) Voter selects what to vote for
2) Computer punches holes in a paper ballot, _and_ prints a barcode representing the votes on the ballot.
3) Counting machine reads optically, and checks barcode.
See? It's simple! The person can't walk out with the audit trail; if the ballot isn't presented on the way out, it's not counted. We already have optical reading systems; the barcode removes any reasonable chance of error.
100% accurate, can be checked by hand, can be done [relativly] cheaply, you can fall back on paper if the computers go down. Why aren't we doing this?!?!
Ok, I know the answer, but I don't have to like it.

Re:Software Engineeringagreed. to me, it all sounds like made up bullshit that can be summarized into three main points:
1. comment on what you're doing in your code.
2. don't put in anything except what you need to get the job done for that function.
3. assume the user / caller is an idiot and compensate.

Re:how could this not be true?I still say the ultimate goal is to dump video over a special dock and send a 5.1 ch audio feed over the APE's optical out.
that would give apple the power to open an iMovie Video Store and offer DVD-quality stuff, as soon as the bandwidth (or codec) is upon us.

Re:circumvent code-morphing?no. i believe the code morphing is done at a layer that is completely invisible to the OS. if transmeta ripped this out, they'd just be releasing another core with a non-X86 ISA (just like PPC, SPARC, MIPS, Alpha, Itanium, PA-RISC, or any one of the other non-x86 chips / cores out there).

Are you kidding? You can get them for free (well, signing up for a free AOL trial and getting/having/coercing some friends to do the same). These have become a commodity like branded pens and vendor polo shirts.

Other Applications
As with almost any new technology, the real benefit may come not in the originally intended manner, but through through other uses people find for the technology.
WD-40 was an accident, and the inventor was not trying to make a lubricant. Now we've got a lubricant, let's see what else we can do with it.

Re:software patents are badwell, if two people think of the same thing independently at the same time and one of them can get to the patent office faster (that being the only difference), why the fuck should the other person have to pay to use something they thought of on their own?

Re:Pretty soon we can add...well, I think once Q3A comes out as OSS we'll see a lot more homebrew games spin off, so that list will grow exponentially afterwards.
Quake 3 will be more of a toolkit for future homebrew / OSS games than a worthwhile OSS game itself. IIRC, id Software usually releases the engine, but not the media.

Re:I want one!
Which goes back to the initial and most overlooked aspect of the story - where's the code?
Give me this in an open source format (since he is a PowerBook user, I would assume [hope] it's perl or python), some basic instructions on how to hook up whatever device to whatever port (serial? USB?) and I'll rig this thing to my car now.
Very cool, and kudos for the technical implementation. Screw the politics behind it...

Re:Is it just me
I was suprised when I was on AOL today and saw their prices for ringtones.
I signed up for AOL because of that "freeipods" deal (I referred you, wink wink). During my exploration of all the new stuff put on AOL over the past 10 years since my last free trial I noticed an area called AOL "My Mobile".
Well, clicking around I found a "ringtones" section and checked it out. Seems that they offer a subscription(!!!) to their ringtones service which makes them 60 cents a piece or they sell them outright for $1.20.
What? How many ringtones can you use at once? I'm not aware of a phone which will cycle ringtones from a playlist but I'm sure that is next. I'm happy with the Imperial March... why would I change it anyways.
Seems like a huge waste of money. Next your phone company will be charging you for receiving ringtones. Either way, I could get the entire songs from iTunes anyways.
Notice, the prices above are close to what I remember... don't hold me to it. Get free ringtones from this site anyways. -
CS2?Yeah but I think more people are really waiting for Counter Strike 2 (Whatever it is called).
Tons of people play Counter Strike, and they all complain about how outdated CS is. I think everyone really wants to know if CS2 is going to be ready at the same time as HL2, because thats where the real market is.

Count Me OutThe article didn't mention, but is Longhorn still going to be a complete rewrite as they were talking about before?
I doubt it if they are going to be putting it out in 2 years. So this is basically going to be Windows XP with a new UI, Avalon the new DirectX, Indigo a program "to allow software and services to work across networks and different devices." and some new programming tool WinFX that supports both XP and Longhorns UI.
Nothing special.

Re:AMD64?Amen. Hell...an AMD64 laptop would make a decent SOHO server...integrated KVM *and* UPS too.
I thought about going that route for my next server upgrade, but I think a dual opteron with 2 GB RAM can handle doom 3, mythtv, and apache at the same time. And that would mean one less system to manage (and one less heat producing setup in my room).

Here
I work at a major university. I have been trying forever to get my boss to purchase all our machines with linux on them (he kept claiming that HP required us to buy them with windowsm which was true a while back). We went to Novell brainshare and saw SUSe 9.0 in action and linux has come a long way. SUSE 9.1 "looks even better (more eye candy at least)
It wasn't ready for my laptop about a year and a half ago but maybe now it is.

Reviewer seems VERY easy to impress
The author seems extremely happy about how everything just works out of the box
Just how low is the fsking bar when a reviewer has to note that nothing was broken when he first powered on the system?
C'mon people, raise your standards for a "good" system!

I take it all back!I previously said that it was about time that someone sells the whole shabang but I was wrong. This doesnt have it all.
The whole shabang
a cellphone with these features
-has a digital camera (atleast 3 megapixels)
-works as a pda
-bluetooth
-20 Gig hardrive (minimum) for music and other stuff
-and wipes my booty (not required)this is my ultimate one, It is pretty much an IPOD made into a phone/pda/camera/toiletpaper
:) If anyone has seen this one tell me about it and I will buy it.It's for real. I normally don't go for these things but...Free ipods (click here to get yours) .

There will be bugs foreverI like how he states that there will always be bugs no matter what, "Since human beings themselves are not fully debugged yet". No matter what software you have, there will always be bugs. It doesn't matter if it comes from Microsoft or Redhat or Mac, there will be bugs no matter what. Shoot, I can't even write a Hello world script without having problems. J/K

Bugs in Service Pack 2
Have you read about all the new bugs that are being found in SP2. There are compaints about how the SP2 security panel can be spoofed. This allows a person to trick people into thinking their firewall and virus scan are all on and working normally. Microsoft's response... (paraphrased quote) "We are busy with other more important bugs at the time, don't bother us with these tivialities."
