Re:Hurray for Stem Cells Research
AFAIK Bush is against embryonic stem cell research. "Normal" adult stem cell therapy is available for Americans and used widely and very successfully, e. g. to replace the immune cells of cancer patients whose immune system was totally destroyed by chemotherapy. Since bone marrow stem cells are adult stem cells, I guess this technology will be available to Americans if it proves useful and safe (even if, god forbid, Bush gets reelected).

joking aside,
As creepy as this may be for those of us fortunate enough to still have all original parts, it's life-changing or even life-saving if you've lost a section of your skeleton (like this dude) for some reason.

Ok, so take your pick of Google results:

Your search - "all letters I wrote to Mr Smith about the Anderson account last year" - did not match any documents.

BBN had some interesting natural language parsing projects going in the early 90s, but google has shown that "semantic nets plus keywords" winds up being a better way to search hyperlinked data. The problem that I see is that my hard drive isn't hyperlinked, so I don't really WANT a google-like search capability.

Re:My favorite quote
When people are willing to participate in a blatently direct marketing ploy in exchange for an ipod, it's going to be rather difficult to negatively affect their image of Apple's mp3 player.

PG-13 are worse than R's sometimes
I am suprised sometime at how much worse some PG-13's appear to be than some R's. It seems that many the the producer want to pack in as much crap as they can an still get the PG-13 rating. The maximum nudity, the maximum swearing, the maximum explicative, etc. Whereas most R's seem to get their rating simply from the content of telling there stories. I am abbout to swear off movies all together.

Re:Winamp's or IE's fault?
Not exactly.
And for the "it works in Firefox also" comments - well, it doesn't. Not exactly... Firefox will allow you to save the file, but when you open it, it will open using winamp, which uses IE for the XML handling - thus opening itself for the exploit.
Nullsoft's patch will probably address the appropriate zone permissions it's XML files are
executed" in within IE, or just not use IE's engine for the XML stuff.

Winamp's or IE's fault?
Still trying to figure out - is it winamp's fault that an XML character escape sequence causes stupid IE to run as in a local zone.
This isn't the first app that gets nailed just because it was using IE (for whatever extent of use - full rendering or peripheral stuff like SSL Certificate handling or XML processing).
Just add this to the IE screwups tally :-)

Re:Different From The Old Days
And you should probably do (get your ass kicked for the sticker).
And yes - this is the reason why people rant and "get out of their shell" on the internet - because they are the faceless mass that pisses them off on the road, and they can finally shed all the inhibitions and behave like the jerks they want to be (when pushed around), instead of the nice geeks they are.

Re:Steve Jobs it coming!
The most recent thing I saw for the ipod was a site that was giving them away, free. They require you to sign up with a 'free' offer (music, book, movie clue, etc.) and get five others to do the same. They are paid a bounty by those companies for the people they get to sign up.

Re:A Major Problem
ASP support has nothing to do with IE or any other browser for that matter (lynx friendly).
You should be looking for ActiveX and screwed up DHTML when you say that IE is required. I am working with a major financial processing company and we support all browsers. Some of the servers do run ASP (both from Win and Linux servers) but the HTML they spit out is squeky clean - not a problem even if you have to recode some of the application... Actually, all of November is in autumn, at least on the northern hemisphere. But in the original article, they also say, it will be released in autumn 2005 (of course only, if they do not decide to postpone it, because it would coincide with the release of Duke Nukem Forever).

Re:Music has absolutely no value
Interesting point.
To that effect, Ipods also have no value. In which case, you probably wouldn't mind helping me get a free one.
To stay on topic a bit, I have no problem giving a performer money for either live or recorded versions of their work. However, the industry that has grown up around this really chaps my hide. Not just the RIAA, either. How about Ticketmaster? $7.50 per ticket service charge?!?!?!?!! And a monopoly on tickets for a certain venue? Definitely candidates for Ark B. -

Is it just me or the fact that you can get a nice little LCD attached to something is the real item here?
We've all seen the hackable "disposable" digicams here before, and considering the quality of pictures and the hassle to get them off the camera, this one is actually hackable in the old fashioned sense...
Anyone has any info on getting this nifty LCD to work/interface with anything? (case modders...)

Normal ads just aren't effective anymore
I think what we can take from this is that people are becoming "immunized" to ordinary advertisements...they just aren't clicking. So advertisers have to turn to other methods to try to pull in those dollars. One thing you can say for the ad-words thing is that at least it's not intrusive. Who normally runs their mouse over text in a news article anyway? And at least when reading a printed media article you're expecting to be advertised to, unlike with the DejaNews ad-words flap of a few years back.
Something I found interesting in the same vein was another Wired story the other day, about FreeiPods.com--an advertising site where, if you complete a trial offer from one of an assortment of merchants and get five other people to complete one too, they send you an advertiser-paid-for iPod (or $250 iTMS gift certificate). I've searched the web for stories about these people and everything I find suggests they're legitimate.
The whole thing seems to me to suggest that the advertisers participating in that program are finally starting to get the idea that if they want to advertise to us, they need to make it worth our while.
(Full disclosure: okay, so the FreeiPods link is a referral link for me. I was going to compare and contrast its advertising model anyway, and given that I was going to mention it anyway, it would be dumb not to include the referral link instead of just a plain-vanilla one, given that they both pull up the website just the same and I might as well benefit from the traffic as not. So don't accuse me of trying to sneak something by you.) -

Ironic
I found it funny that one of the offers listed on freeipods.com is for a $0.99 trial on RealRhapsody.
I'm wondering if Real knows this, or if they'll just take it anyway they can get it. You'd think that they would want to steer people clear of the iPod (especially a free one!) with their "Freedom of Choice" marketing and all that...

Free iPOD "scheme"
Hey Slashdotters, I did a search for this free iPods scheme on here and didn't find anything and thought some of you might be interested in getting a free iPod (and in the process helping me get mine). It's pretty simple and by the variety of results/testimonials I found from Google I'm fairly certain it's legit.
How it works, is you sign up with freeiPods.com and choose one offer from about 10 companies (including Ebay, AOL, Columbia House, BMG, and others). The offers range from free trials to actual purchases -- the easiest seems to be to sign up for an Ebay account and bid on an item (you don't have to win). You then get five friends (or in my case Slashdotters), to join freeiPods and apply for an offer of their own.
The following is my referral link, but of course feel free to simply bypass me and visit freeipods.com http://www.freeipods.com/default.aspx?referer=7470 979
A pretty good description of how they afford this can be found here http://www.sphid.com/misc/ipod/ and I'm sure there's more discussion if you search google.
BTW, have any of you Slashdotters gone through with this deal?
Thanks if you clicked my link, and good luck on getting an ipod of your own!
