DLP TV? SegaScope 3d?
This is new? Many DLP TVs support this even though not many probably care (I have one and I don't).
It took over 20 years to come out with what looks like the same technology as the Sega Master System's 3D Glasses?
I also think I saw Captain EO with the same glasses back when Michael Jackson was loved by most.

wtf?
I have to stop and ask a big WTF here.
WTF?... thanks in large part to the controversy surrounding the Resident Evil 5 launch trailer.
So not having heard of any racist issues with this new game, nor seen its trailer yet, i simply highlighted "Resident Evil 5 launch trailer" and hit 'google', which the first link back appears to be said trailer at http://www.gametrailers.com/player/41037.html
I see absolutely nothing controversial nor racist there.
Even the article doesn't help.
The trailer sparked angry reactions from black activist groups and saw legions of gamers rush to defend the franchise's reputation
But why?
Is this seriously a problem in todays world? Am I missing something?I realize the only point of activist groups such as these are to promote racism to keep them selfs in a job, but really now...

Re:How long before the tree huggers complain
Greenpeace has released a commercial decrying the toxicity of game consoles.
for anyone who didnt realize - the video is a joke

Re:How long before the tree huggers complain
"What kind of toxins are we being exposed too!!!11!"
Burned kerosene. If that bothers our poor environmentalist friends, then they might want to start a protest against Kerosene Lamps, portable stoves, home heating (primarily Japan, UK, and Ireland), and jet engines.
Which reminds me. Greenpeace has released a commercial decrying the toxicity of game consoles. It "stars" Mario, Master Chief, and Kratos. Trademarks for which they obviously don't have the rights. (Evidenced by the awful voice acting.) Worse yet, their claims are entirely specious, making bizarre and untrue claims about toxicity and lack of recycling. Hilarious in how bad it is, though.

Re:ho-ray
I object! "Streetfighter" was a fun movie, and "Mortal Kombat" was fairly good as well.
Obligatory Nostalgia Critic review (Mortal Kombat) :

Re:Oh my
You don't need to wait 5 minutes, that game (as the review said) was horrible from second zero. I remember renting it back in the day and being so angry at how bad it was. There was actually a pretty fun arcade version that I remember playing at the time.
Anyway, the nostalgia grabbed me and the narrator said there would be a followup. The link is here, it was a bit difficult to find. -
Oh my
Hopefully it'll be better than the Atari 2600 version! (starting at 5:30 of the video)

Re:Don't encourage the crackers...
As far as the price tag, Finance 101 my friend. They keep the quantities on the shelf low to generate some hype, and come out with some quirky "game" (WiiFit) every now and then to generate more hype to keep demand up.
Right. Nintendo increased production from 1.6M to 2.4M in a year, to try to meet the near-unprecedented demand. (See http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=33095) Where are they storing all those millions of consoles? The truth is, it's the consumers who make sure the Wii can't be found on shelves, by buying the damn things as fast as they get back in stock.
And Wii games aren't exactly contenders for Game of the Year, again niche market.
Riiiiight, games like Super Mario Galaxy can never win such prestigious awards...
http://videogames.yahoo.com/events/game-of-the-year-2007/best-overall-game-of-2007/1177115
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/29286.htmlNot that I really disagree with you all that much, Nintendo have been careful about ramping up their production to not allow Wiis to pile up in stores, and *most* Wii games are shitty.
Both of those are attributable to common sense, though: Produce too many of an item, and you're paying to lease more factories than you actually need, and on top of that you also have to store your excess stock in expensive warehouses.
As to the shitty games, that's just down to the Wii being the market leader, and thus the target of shovelware publishers who want to maximise their sales by releasing games to the largest install base possible. Oh yeah, the Wii is cheaper to develop for, too!

In the year 2000...
I can offer nothing about the game itself, but I was pretty amazed at the difference between the trailer (in "HD") and the gameplay footage. I am not sure if I'm more amazed at the trailer footage itself or how silly the gigantic valley between advertising and product expands.
I would play the hell out of the "trailer" game regardless of how bugged and grind-y it is.

Another upcoming Stardock game, that I assume will be DRM free, is Demigod. Their official website doesn't have that much information, but there is a video from PAX, where I played through their demo and was very impressed.

Re:Nintendo to Sega:
All your blue hedgehogs are belong to us!
I've read far greater histories of Sega told by far greater men within the company then this guy. Instead of waxing poetically into the failure that is today's Sega maybe he outta be down with the workers ensuring the next Sonic game isn't a critical failure as has become the norm. Hey we may see a lot of Mario, but by and large he is kept to games of acceptable quality. But hey maybe I'm just a little bitter, considering the company had the best hardware they could of ever asked for with the Dreamcast and yet it was a non-starter. Too much 'change' was the problem, to many add ons for core hardware that shouldn't have been neglected with such piss poor hardware releases. And here we have an article about more change from Sega... 9th time is a charm eh?

Re:YouTube
It'd be great, but it's unlikely to happen any time soon. IE is still the dominant browser, and YouTube can't just avoid their major audience.
Why couldn't YouTube support both formats? GameTrailers does something like this - I know off hand that it supports QuickTime, WMV, and Flash (and another I think, but I'm not positive on that). I believe that it auto-detects which one is best given your OS, browser, and what is available. For example, I generally visit the site on my MacBook in Firefox, so I generally get the Quicktime version. Sometimes I get the streaming one instead (I assume because either the Quicktime version isn't available, or I only get Quicktime when streaming isn't available).
It shouldn't be that hard for YouTube to do something similar, and provide the Ogg version to FF3.1 users, and Flash to everyone else.

A Game for the 'Fans'
I feel like this game is designed very much for the people who've been following the series since the beginning. It's strange, considering that with MGS3 it seemed like they were trying to tailor it in such a way that new players could get into without knowing the history of the series.
Where MGS3 succeeded in making the plot work for new players, it failed at doing so for the controls. Even some veteran players had problems with the controller layout, most of which were due to multiple actions using a single button, but at different pressure levels. The top down camera as well was difficult to use for most players with the loss of the radar.
MGS4, on the other, made strides in the playability of the game (although they don't bother to explain all of the different CQC moves in-game, I think most new players can get by without them), but I feel that a new player would be completely lost as far as the story is concerned. It was obviously a difficult job considering how many loose ends the game needed to tie up. It's apparent that they at the very least tried to help newer players out a little by reducing the amount of codec calls you receive, the length of each one and making some of the calls happen in real-time while you're still in full control of the character. However, when it comes to the cutscenes they clearly felt it was better to give the fans of the series what they were used too rather than trying to make them appeal to a broader set.
Having finished the game last night I thought it was great. They tie up just about every loose end in the entire series and the large majority of them in a satisfying way. The final scene (after the initial credits) I thought was a great concept, but it went on much longer than it needed to, I felt. There wasn't as much humor in this game as the others and what was there wasn't as good as past games, but given the somber tone of Snake's dilemma I can understand why. There are a few parts where the weight of the situation can bear down on you; one scene in the last level is sure to go down as one of the most emotional moments in gameplay history.
As far as the gameplay is concerned I mostly knew what to expect since I played in the Metal Gear Online beta. I was surprised that there was one level where you were forced to be stealthy. In the levels before it you were given the option of how you wanted to play (though generally rewarded more for being stealthy), but in this one going guns akimbo didn't work. I could see how that could turn some people off.
I didn't feel the bosses were up to par with MGS3, but I don't see any game living up to the enemies in that one, especially 'The End.' With a few exceptions all of the bosses in MGS4 were new characters and you didn't find out their stories until AFTER you defeated them. To make things worse their background is revealed through (relatively) lengthy and boring codec conversations. This is one place where I felt MGS4 dropped the ball, but it seems to be a side effect of not wanting to introduce any new major characters.
Graphically and cinematically this game is ridiculously great. The character models are easily the best I've ever seen in a game(note: I'm mainly a console gamer). Most of the background textures are good, though a few are pretty low-res, but it seems to be a trade off for having such detailed character models. The cutscenes are enthralling and rival the work of some of the best directors in film (though some of the dialog is really, truly awful). What's great is that, for the most part, they blend seamlessly back into the gameplay.
Overall, I'd say the game is fantastic if you're familiar with the story, and an interesting, though flawed, ride for those who aren't but are patient enough to sit through the long cinematics. -

Re:stars are not a problem
Right now, games just recognize 2 or 3 movements (slash, stab, etc), and play a fixed animation, which is bullshit.
You are so stuck in 2007. Welcome to 2008. A limited repertoire of movements recognized and corresponding canned animations is a detail of the implementation, and does not necessarily indicate a limitation of the hardware. The _real_ improvement would be the ability to use it as a light saber.
It's coming. Current release date is August 2008. -

So there are other web sites out there doing good FF history stuff. Look at GameTrailer's Final Fantasy Retrospective. It's not 20th anniversary, but whatever. Infinity Ward's best developers
That's what Infinity Ward actually said: They had their top programmers working on the PS3 version.
The best part, of course, is that the 360 version still looks better than the PS3 version.
Frankly, I don't quite understand why cross-platform games look worse on the PS3. I own both consoles, and I do think that the new R&C and Uncharted look better than anything I've seen on the 360. Yet all developers who create games also running on the 360 screw up their PS3 versions, even if they have "the best devs" working on the PS3 version. Why is this? -
Aparently nobody has heard of "Custer's Revenge"
I will quote two description of two games made for the Atari 2600... Before Nintendo, Sony, and MS started to require their permission before a game is released on their console. A short description of Custer's Revenge:
"well you are both completely naked. What's happening... well there are spears dropping from out of the sky. And you gotta avoid them. So the goal of the game is to get over there and rape her. That's terrible I can't believe I'm playing this! Ya fuck her fuck her! That's how you score in this game.'
Ya that's funny right? Well its funny for about two minutes. Then it gets boring.
All you do is. Bang the chick. Dodge the spears. Bang the chick. Dodge the spears.
You know... you gotta give this guy credit. He's under attack and he still has the nerve to go over and screw this woman against a cactus. "
A short description of Beat 'em and eat 'em:
"Beat em... and eat em... oh dear what have I gotten myself into. All you do is move these two sluts back and forth to catch this... *stuff* this guy shoots down... *licking of mouth action happens onscreen* oh... yummy. "

EA Chicago had it coming
As a gamer, I found them quite annoying. Their games were generally sub-par, and from what I've seen from the studio itself, at least some of the people clearly were full of it.
I think EA is trying to move towards more innovation, new franchises and smaller games, and EA Chicago simply didn't fit. They made mediocre sequels, so EA cut them and bought a few "real" development studios instead.
I'm sorry for the people who worked there, but I think for EA, it's the right thing to do. -

Acording to Arstechnia, the co-president of Naughtydog claims that Uncharted only uses 30% of the cells capabilties and the game looks pretty awesome.

Ratchet and Clank is the best game ever..
I played the demo of Ratchet & Clank, and it's wonderfull it was the first time I was amazed by a next gen machine since I entered a VR cube. Not sure if that says something about SGI or about Sony.
But I recommend the newly released Freeciv instead, since it's infinitely many times cheaper. -
Re:What, no Wii?HD? Are they really steaming HD movies already? I only ask because I don't have enough bandwidth for that. Well, I might but I've never seen it actually work that well for a very long time. Gametrailser's HD content usually has to buffer to 90% or beyond to watch a whole preview. Could just be my crappy provider (Qwest, no fiber).
I'm sure the Wii could play MP4's in 480P pretty well if they wanted to let you. It'd be nice if I could view my photos and my videos off the digital camera. But, yeah, if they did have HD content available (and the bandwidth), no chance.

Re:Shadows are wrong!
PS...
For people that think there is 'little' difference between DX10 and DX9 for that 'precious 1-2fps lost', or that soft shadows are not a part of DX10, just look at this simple HD video that shows the difference. DX9 looks great, but DX10 looks almost real with far more 'actions' going on in the same scene.

Re:He's probably right
Factor 5 itself basically admits this in their "Mastering the Beast" video. To quote one of the developers:
"We got the controller, it's great, new hardware! Everyone huddles around the desk and looks at it... So the first thing we did is just take the controller and use the tilt as a replacement for the joystick--we tilt left, we tilt right--and everyone tried it and it's like, 'This is crap. I don't want to play this.'"
But instead of just doing the logical thing of scrapping the idea of making Lair controllable only by motion sensors, they "try a little bit" and convince themselves that it doesn't really suck that bad. Watch it yourself if you don't believe me.

Re:There is a good reason.
Does a game being old somehow preclude it from being a great game or one of the best of all time? I'll agree that a bit of nostalgia may have crept into IGN's list, mostly because Super Mario Bros. is rated as the number one game of all time (I contend that Super Mario Bros. 3 is a superior game, but that's only my opinion.) but many other games have legitimate reasons for being there. Super Metroid and Legent of Zelda: OOT are regarded as the best games in their series by many and as the best game of their type by many as well. I think there's a tendency for younger games to overlook many of these games or not appreciate them today. Bioshock has been lauded as an excellent FPS (which I won't argue with much) but does it deserve to be in the top 10 of all time? I'd suggest watching this review that actually takes a critical look at the game and doesn't spend the majority of the reivew lavashing praise on it.
As a personal example, I find Civilization II to be one of the most brilliant games ever designed. The fact that I can still sink hours of my life at a time into the game when it has to compete with the current generation of games speaks something of its excellence. It's not perfect, but there's not much I would change about the game if I could. There are some games like this that can't be improved upon in their gameplay aspect and updating the graphics only goes so far to enhance the experience. A game like Civilization II doesn't need new pretty graphics or anything that would normally cause a game to receive a 'mature' rating in order to be great.
It's also disingenuous to suggest that there weren't any mature games being made before than either. Metal Gear Solid received an M-rating almost a decade ago. There have also been mature themed games all the way back in the Atari generation. A game doesn't need to have an M rating in order to do well and the concept of Mature games isn't something new either. I only bring this up, because I feel that someone would likely use it as a rebuttle.
I'm not trying to say that any of the M rated games on the list are bad either, but with the exception of Half-Life it's hard to argue that any of them should be moved significantly up the list when the games placed in front of them are some of the pinacles of gaming. Some of these games are pushing the limits of the technology we have today, but some of the other games were also pushing those limits over a decade ago. Perhaps it's possible that our culture is becoming more accepting of mature themes in video games and that's why we're seeing more of them, but adding mature themes to a game just for the sake of having them there won't make a game good. -

HD is certainly not a more reliable medium
bluray has substantial scratch resistance. Insofar as this is an issue, blu-ray wins hands down. CNET did a test a while back to that effect.
No test is really needed when only one platform requires this universal protection. I doubt this is a huge deal, but bluray discs are extremely durable. http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/5724 9.html
Bluray wins in movie quality as soon as you unmute your TV, so who cares about scratch resistance?
This format war isn't about whether bluray is better than HD-DVD, this is about how much money Microsoft has. bluray has the supposedly better DRM and accordingly has most studios, so I would assume it's got the advantage. At this point, I would assume that you will see more dual format players, but you will also see far more bluray movies.
Thanks to Sony throwing away its game system brand for the lion's share of the HD player market, a studio would be crazy to release only on HD-DVD. But this gives Microsoft more time. Time for the XBOX to still be a valid competitor, time for Sony to suffer financially, time to spit out a next generation in two years. That's worth 150 mil to MS. A stupid download for GTA 4 was worth 50 mil, and this is a much bigger problem for Sony. -
