Re:The fifth force is...
Now for real. How does the new proposed fifth force of nature compares to the other proposals? A not so quick search on Google's pages behind the first one results in articles dated as early as 1986 and before. Your results may vary: https://www.google.com.br/#q=fifth+force+of+nature&safe=strict&tbas=0&start=130

Re:How Did We Get Here?
And rape rates in some other 1st-world countries are HUGELY higher--but nobody here cares apparently: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wi...
The numbers may say so, but they comprise only official data. In more advanced countries, the case must be that less rapes go unreported, so the figures may be closer to reality, while not so in the US. Consider the Japan rates, which are among the lowest, while having a strong culture of sexual harassment, (it's the same culture that created things like RapeLay): http://www.jstor.org/discover/10.1525/as.2007.47.5.811?uid=3737664&uid=2&uid=4&sid=21106029734881; http://scholarship.law.upenn.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1373&context=jil;http://ijo.sagepub.com/content/45/3/278.short.

Re:False "new vs. old" dichotomies
GP was saying he wanted the choice to be made by a large committee. You are just saying you disagree with the large committee that made the choice.
What's not necessarily a bad thing, as History tells us.

There's no energy crisis
"There is no energy crisis because I can generate my own"
Right-wing, radical freedom and independence, states rights, end-of-the-world survavalists should be embracing generation of their own energy, if they are serious about independence from corporations, monopolies, etc. It's nearly impossible to create your own gas, but electricity is comparatively easy to generate.
The military is quite right-wing, but they are just practical when it comes to generating power.

Re:Not just ubuntu, all of Linux is in decline
Between Windows 8.1, which is revolutionary, and OS X there is simply no room left for Linux any more.
Bullshit. I don't see a single server box running Windows 8.1 neither OS X.
;-)On the Desktop, however, you can be right (with that "revolutionary" put aside - that bunch of scraps put together IS NOT revolutionary - it's just a tablet dumbed down to be used on a Desktop, and then hammered further to get the Desktop back).
I used to know half a dozen people who used Linux and now ALL of them have switched to something better.
I am one of these. But not because the options tuned better, but because what I was using became worse.
Windows is a bag of shit. Nuff said.
Mac OSX *is good*, very good. But not THAT good. There's nothing (eye candies aside) that my MaxOS Box do now that I didn't did at least so fast and conveniently with my (correctly configured) OpenSUSE 11.4 box running Gnome 2. The *BEST* professional box I ever used (and it's utterly missed).
People are tired of recompiling kernels, looking at crappy fonts, having NO drivers for common hardware, and all the general stupidity and uselessness of Linux.
It's almost 10 years since I compiled a kernel for the last time (Gentoo doesn't count - it does all the job alone, freeing you to see PR0N all night!). And I *am* a Linux heavy user. It just happened that I know some guys (like OpenSUSE) that thought it could be a good idea doing that for me, and then charging me with support when I want to do something unusual. Guess what? This model works fine for me (not that sure for them, however).
The lack of device drivers for Linux *IT'S YOUR FAULT*. Stop buying shitty devices, and go for ones that Linux already supports. I don't see anyone buying Booster or any other shitty Stereo to install on their Mercedes, Porsche or whatever. WHY IN HELL people spend a lof of hundred of dollars on I7 computers with tons of RAM and SSD, and then go cheap on video, sound and ethernet?
You got what you pays for. Stop bitching about it, and grow up. You are the stupid and useless here.
;-)And I haven't even begun with the security, performance and privacy flaws inherent to ALL open source software!
You haven't begun with it because there's no way to start with, at first place.
Every piece of software has flaws and insecurities. Open Source ones just happens to allow you to see for yourself.
Take *ANY* Windows update. Do you can see what they're fixing? No? Me neither. And one of these updates fucked up a entire country this year.
Yeah, I know you're just trolling. I know you're, at best, being paid to astro turf against open source (but chances are that you are just a moron doing it for free - some people just love to be slaved for free, what we can do?).
But it happens that I am in the mood today.
:-) -
Follow the money
Developers who want to be paid really well should do what I did, go where the money is.
First step, learn the ropes.
Second step, use your knowledge of software to program your way to riches.

Overpopulation is a myth
You know what is the far most biggest problem to the environment? It is not AGW, it is the exponential population growth. There are already several billion too many of us.
There is no global overpopulation. Some places (such as Japan) are already experiencing population aging and decline, which is bad in many ways. Other places (such as the USA and specially Europe) already have sub-replacement fertility rates, and their population only grows because of demographic lag and immigration. It is predicted the the European Union population (now at 503M) will reach zero natural population increase by 2015 and zero total population increase in 2035 (at 520M), then start declining.
The USA will grow from 310M in 2010 to 403M in 2050. [1]
Asia will increase from 4.2B in 2010 to 5.1B in 2050, then start declining. [2]The only region that is really growing is Africa. It will increase from 1B in 2010 to 2.2B in 2050. [2] Then its population density will be 73/km2. [3] Compare that to the current population density in Portugal (115/km2), in South Korea (487/km2) and in Taiwan (641/km2). [4]
Global population is predicted to grow from 7B in 2011 to 9B in 2050 and 10B in 2100 [5] and start falling soon after [6].
And according to [7], 40-50% of America-produced food is thrown away. According to [8], 1/3 of the world food is thrown away.
And this does not take into account that people eat, just for pleasure, excessive quantities of resource-intensive food (such as meat). If Americans/Europeans want to help the poor, an easy way would be to decrease (say, by 30%) their diet of meat. This will immediately reduce food demand and, for double bonus, the saved money can be donated to charity. And much arable land is wasted on subsidized inefficient corn-based ethanol. You can lobby your government to stop that.Plus, there does not seem to be a negative correlation between population density and GDP per capita. [9]
African hunger is not caused by overpopulation. It is caused by corrupt and authoritarian governments, and by guerrillas/terrorists motivated by Marxism, Islamism, ethnic hate or simply greed.
Overpopulation fear-mongering is very old - at least as old as Malthus. One of its more recent incarnations was the 1968 book "The Population Bomb", which predicted mass starvation to occur in the 1970s.
Anyway, for better or for worse, there is already strong action taken by individuals, foundations, and Western governments, to restrict fertility in Africa.

Or cut down on population. Which is doable without resorting to war or murder (but, I repeat myself). Put the money into sex ed uncontaminated by religion, free prophylactics, and rewards for not having children. Positive reinforcements, not negative like China did.

City planning could be reinvented
A huge amount of city planning actually could be called car-planning. Roads, traffic, parking, fines, licencing, pedestrians, safety, refueling, etc. Most importantly, space - roads, parking and car-services stores take up huge amounts of space. Changing the cars changes a lot of how the city works. Every uban planner is always complaing about the limitations cars impose on the possibilities. Look as Masdar cars.

But the most important reason:
Considerable tax reduction (as translated by Google Translate)"engeneers".. engineers..
Fixed that.

Re:awful, awful awful awful
(flamebait? really?)
I would be happy with augmented knowledge about my surroundings; like, beside my GPS, a radar with surrounding cars and pedestrians, with their speed and whether there's risk of collision; the route tracking would then include tips of when to change lanes. I would love* to know how is the climate on my route before leaving my house.
A robot driving a car will surely need all this data and much more.

Re:Great book
Shakespeare had copy rights for his work!
From the The Oxford companion to Shakespeare
:
The acting companies for which Shakespeare wrote held the legal copy rights to his manuscripts. Theater historians have traditionally maintained that players were reluctant to allow their plays to be printed, either because they feared losing exclusive acting rights to another company or because they believed that the sale of printed texts might reduce the demand for performances.

What Constitutes a "Chip"?
Pro-Troll puts a chip in its fish lures that 'duplicates the electrical nerve discharge of a wounded bait fish,' prompting other fish to bite it.
Hmmm, I seem to remember hearing about this gimmick and also hearing that it varies in effectiveness with the bigger fish being a little bit more responsive (although I wish someone would bust out some statistics so I know this isn't snake oil).
Anyway, my point is that I was unaware this used either an integrated circuit or microprocessor (which is sorta what I expect when someone says "chip"). Took a peek at the patent they reference on their site (which was last updated in 2007) attached to their "Echip." What you got there is closer to a mechanical device that generates an electric field via a piezoelectric crystal inside an electrically conductive sealed rigid container.
Am I missing something? Did they update their product? And if so, what on earth do they need an integrated circuit for on something that is just a tiny voltage generator? To my knowledge, it has no power source other than the crystal inside the container. Did I miss something here or is pickens stretching to sell the Echip as more than it is? I think the marketing name took hold of the submitter and editor here ... -

Re:If you cant tell the difference....
[If you can't tell the difference] between the Lincoln memorial and the FDR memorial you have no business going to Washington DC.
It sounds like the PP is saying that anyone who doesn't know enough about DC shouldn't go to DC and learn about it. That strikes me as weird.
However if you decide to go anyway, they do have still pre-printed maps checked for accuracy that sell at any gas station or book store.
Bingo. Yet another hissy-fit over nothing. Nobody is going to miss the Beck anti-Democrat rally. The two sites are less than half a mile apart. Glenn Beck fans and other people in DC speak the same language, so they could, y'know, ask for directions. Additionally, as the PP noted, it's not hard to find maps.
However, "teh Googlz iz in on teh conspiracy" is a convenient excuse if the turnout doesn't meet their expectations.
It doesn't help that Glenn Beck has his fans terrified, convinced that Obama and Democrats are enemies of the US and that Obama is just like Hitler. Conspiracy theories like "Google Maps doesn't want us to find the Lincoln Memorial and save America because Obama and Pelosi are controlling Google" are easier to believe when somebody on a channel called FOX News has been trying to convince them for years that Obama is destroying the USA and is about to put the white man down because he's an angry black radical, impose Sharia law because he's a Muslim, send people to Gulags and turn the USA into the Soviet Union because he's just like Stalin, or maybe he'll just turn into a genocidal expansionist dictator because he's just like Hitler.
On Tuesday, I checked maps.google.com.br to find the names of the streets that meet at the corner where I wanted a friend to meet me near the Berrini station of the São Paulo metropolitan train. Google Maps showed the station out in the middle of the Pinheiros River. I wonder if Obama and Pelosi were trying to drown me or poison me with the pollution in the Pinheiros...

Local internet-crime-and-game hysteria here in Sao Paulo crteated local laws requiring we keep ID, name, phone, address, DOB, access times, school hours, blabla forever, from every user at cybercafes. I said "I refuse to" - and let everyone go undocumented. Couple of smarty-pants lawyers sent anonymous email offending each other from here. Sued each other. Fines we may face, around USD 7,000. Damages we may pay, about another USD 7,000. Profit we get there, around USD 1000/mo. Result - hell if I know, just that we're sad one day, angry the next. And reading up. On Tor, Aircrack, new legislation, how to send anon email appropriately. And perhaps for a new job, if I just close...

The point is, such a development's probability increases with time as we/everything incorporate exponentially more transgenes, actuators, enhancers... and such.
This is just an example, although not really a novelty.

Correct "translation" of facts
I'm brazilian and I've read Internet Legal's press release about this (which is a bit like EFF), and what the judge actually prohibits is showing ads FOR THE SOFTWARE. The website in question (www.iplay.com.br) displayed ads which, according to the judge, implied that the software was meant for illegal file sharing.
Also, what happened here is that a second judge REVERSED the decision made by the first one, that said P2P applications are like knifes: you can use it for good OR evil, and there's nothing the maker can do about it. The second judge compared the P2P software to an establishment that sells both drugs (illegal) and soda pop (legal): even if legal products are available, the correct thing to do is to shut everything down.

Re:"stepping back"?
In the city of Fortaleza, a local newspaper once declared that half the councilmen were disonest. However, due to the strong political reaction (and a number of threats), the same newspaper decided to "step back" the following day, by declaring that half the councilmen were honest.
More precisely this event happened in 1965 and those that can read Portuguese may check it out here.

Fourth Phrase: Rome wasn't built BY polite MBA's who took THEIR teams on ropes courses on a weekly basis (.) it was built by unyielding eccentric assholes who made you think if you screwed up they would have your head.

There. FIFY.

Re:Capital expects returns.
Stop bringing up "pure free markets" in discussions about capitalism, really. Pure free markets have properties that will never exist in reality, such as equally complete and correct information for all players.
No, it does not. Who talks about "complete information" are Keynesian economists who themselves develop these hypothetical models, then misattribute them to the (actual) free market theorists all the while showing they don't exist in reality, as a means of defending their system of government-managed semi-free market economy. It's a typical case of straw man argument.
When you go read actual free market theorists, such as Friedrich Hayek and other libertarians, you can clearly and undoubtedly see they starting with the exact opposite assumption. For them, knowledge of the present is always partial, incomplete, uncertain and most of the time subjective, and even more so when we talk about the future, and that's why free market is better. Were it not the case and a planned economy would be feasible. But since it isn't actually the case, then millions and millions of partially-knowledgeable people reacting almost instantly to fast changes happening around them ends up necessarily producing a better outcome than a bunch of partially-knowledgeable central planners whose decisions, all of which are almost by definition knowledgeless, are not only slow in reacting to changes, but all have the potential of badly affecting huge amounts of people in the same, simultaneous, exact way.
Hayek even went so far as to analyze whether technological advances in data gathering and information processing could in theory reach a point where a managed or planned economy would be able to surpass the effectiveness of fast-reacting, imperfect-knowledge-based free market. His conclusion? That if a planned economy had access to infinite processing power, infinite memory etc. it would still reach, at best, the same effectiveness of the free market. But surpass it? Nope, sorry.
It's unfortunate that, since anti-free-market theorist keep misrepresenting what libertarians think and say, they don't take the time to study and understand these fine analytical points. If they did, actually productive talk could be established. Alas, they don't, and it doesn't. -

Any advice about adding OpenVPN to the WRT54G?
Amazing! Thanks. Any advice about how to install OpenVPN on the WRT54G? Which package would you recommend? Do the OpenWrt packages have an adminstration console? I don't see any mention of that. It looks complicated, since I read that there is no Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) until installed.
Also, I note that OpenVPN will NOT work on Windows XP SP2 unless the pre-release version 2.0 is used. I suppose you don't care if you are using a WRT54G at both ends of the VPN. I'm not knowledgeable about this, but I guess that running VPN software on a WRT54G would be more secure than running it on a PC.
I note that Sveasoft provides firmware with PPTP VPN software, but there seems to be some question about whether PPTP is sufficiently secure.
Just guessing, but this seems to be a considerable job to configure. I wish there were a commercial release with the OpenVPN built in.
OpenWrt.
Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router.
Linksys WRT54GS Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster.

Both Linksys products have GPL'd firmware.
There is intense interest in the WRT54G and WRT54GS. One company, Sveasoft, provides upgraded firmware. -
Why not warn people ourselves?
Date: Tue, 28 Dec 2004 22:04:31 -0200
From: Futurepower [futurepower_usa (-AT-) yahoo.com.br]
To: "U.S. Geological Survey National Earthquake Information Center" [sedas (-AT-) neis.cr.usgs.gov]
Subject: NEIC: Why didn't you warn about the Tsunamis?
Question:
I haven't seen this discussed anywhere.
Why didn't the NEIC call the U.S. State Department, so that they could warn people about the Tsunamis?
The earthquake position and magnitude was known 6 hours before the waves arrived in Thailand, I understand. Wouldn't almost every person's life have been saved if Thailand, for example, had had warning?
Michael

Reply:
Michael,
Phone calls were placed to the State Department operations center, the White House situation room, the U.N. Department of Humanitarian Affairs, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, as well as several other organizations within 90 minutes of the occurrance of this earthquake.
The problem is the absence of local warning systems in the countries surrounding the Indian Ocean. There were no systems or response plans in place to warn the local populace.
Stuart Sipkin
USGS/NEIC
_____________
Stuart,
I have a suggestion for a local tsunami warning system. There continues to be an enormous amount of earthquake activity in the area around Indonesia. It seems likely that there will be another big earthquake. Next time there is an earthquake that is likely to cause a tsunami, call me, any time of night or day. I will promise to call at least 30 hotels within 2 hours. I will promise to get 10 friends involved. They will promise to call 30 hotels each, also. We would each take a different country.
My suggestion is that we would use Google to find hotels, for example in Sri Lanka. This is one of the hotels I found there, a 5-star hotel with more than 400 rooms:
Galadari Hotel
The Businessman's Home in Sri Lanka
64, Lotus Road,
Colombo 1.
Sri Lanka.
Tel: 94-1-544544
Fax: 94-1-449875
E-Mail: galadari (-AT-) sri.lanka.net
"The Galadari Hotel is in the heart of the city in Colombo, over looking the beautiful Indian ocean."
Big hotels answer their phones 24 hours a day. Presumably there is a staff of at least 200 at that hotel, for three shifts. I think if one person were told, everyone else would know soon. They don't want their family and friends and neighbors near the water to die, and they know how to reach them, even if they have to ride a motorbike to those who don't have phones.
There are two easy ways to prove that a call about an earthquake is not a hoax. I would tell the person who answered the phone that it is an emergency and I need to talk to a manager. I would tell the manager to check the USGS web site at http://earthquake.usgs.gov/. Any 5-Star hotel, and most others of any size, have internet access. I would also tell the manager that, if the water at the beach receded, people had only a few minutes to get to safety. I would ask the manager to get staff members to call radio and TV stations in their area.
You said in your message, "The problem is the absence of local warning systems in the countries surrounding the Indian Ocean. There were no systems or response plans in place to warn the local populace."
It seems to me that this is a workable plan for a local tsunami warning system. It wouldn't cost much. Using Skype, a two minute call to any land line phone in Sri Lanka is about 40 U.S. cents, for example. Using iConnectHere's most expensive service, a two minute call is 80 cents.
