Conspicuous by its absence in much of the mainstream news coverage of Venezuela’s political crisis is the word “socialism.” Yes, every sensible observer agrees that Latin America’s once-richest country, sitting atop the world’s largest proven oil reserves, is an economic basket case, a humanitarian disaster, and a dictatorship whose demise cannot come soon enough.

But socialist? Perish the thought.

Or so goes a line of argument that insists socialism’s good name shouldn’t be tarred by the results of experience. On Venezuela, what you’re likelier to read is that the crisis is the product of corruption, cronyism, populism, authoritarianism, resource-dependency, U.S. sanctions and trickery, even the residues of capitalism itself. Just don’t mention the S-word because, you know, it’s working really well in Denmark.

Curiously, that’s not how the Venezuelan regime’s admirers used to speak of “21st century socialism,” as it was dubbed by Hugo Chávez. The late Venezuelan president, said Britain’s Jeremy Corbyn, “showed us there is a different and a better way of doing things. It’s called socialism, it’s called social justice, and it’s something that Venezuela has made a big step toward.” Noam Chomsky was similarly enthusiastic when he praised Chávez in 2009. “What’s so exciting about at last visiting Venezuela,” the linguist said, is that “I can see how a better world is being created and can speak to the person who’s inspired it.”

Another trademark of the Murdoch media globally is Islamophobia. From Fox news’ hysterical reaction to President Barack Obama’s Arabic middle name, to the Sydney Daily Telegraph’s current anti-Burka campaign, the Murdoch media has consistently vilified Muslims in the name of protecting Western society from terrorism.

In Australia, not only has Murdoch used his media to campaign for anti-terror laws but, in several cases after such laws have been introduced, authorities used the Murdoch media during prosecutions to spread allegations against defendants in terrorism trials. Such allegations cannot be refuted in open court, or spoken about by the accused, because of secrecy provisions in the anti-terror laws.

It reads like it was written yesterday, but in fact it's a story from 2011, during a previous successful push to whittle away more civil liberties, not just in Australia, but worldwide.

The Craig Thomson case is far from over and it is more than likely that he will prevail in court. Craig Thomson was arrested in NSW by Victorian Police on credit card fraud charges. These charges total a little over $900 AUD and Craig was authorized for up to $50,000 per annum in work-related and incidentals.

Expensive meals refers to the time he met with a journalist over lunch for purely work-related reasons. From memory, the bill was ~$55. The 'prostitutes' he supposedly bought with credit card was misreported after another publication printed 'pornographic movies'. Comically, the original publication also misreported as the movie in question was an R-rated action flick watched in his hotel room while staying for official business. The biggest stretch comes from 'Holidays Interstate'. This actually means he bought a soft-serve icecream to have on camera.

Scot MacDonald was a Liberal MP. As for NSW Labor corruption, at least the party is focused on cleaning it up. Two gone already. Eddie's little empire stretched much further than ALP though, most his mates are Libs. No Liberal Corruption, eh?

First of all, on a per-capita basis the U.S is more oppressive to its citizens then the Chinese government. An American is almost four times as likely to be imprisoned then a Chinese citizen. In fact, the US has more total people in jail then the Chinese, despite the fact that china has almost four times as many people as the US.

But care has to be given when deciding upon how we deal with it. I suspect there is no perfect solution, and temperatures will still be climbing long after I'm dead. I can say with absolute certainly, that millions of people think that U.S. shouldn't trade with China, but should trade with Cuba. In fact, that is pretty much the typical belief amoung self proclaimed progressives in the U.S.. Look at the posts on Slashdot.

But enough of this arguement... You still haven't answered my question. Why do "politically correct" people believe that free trade with China is bad, but that free trade with Cuba is good. I can see being against both (which I suspect is your position, but you seem to be avoiding saying your positon). And I can see being for both (which I am for).

Cuba - under a strict embargo and with a superpower in direct opposition, has been doing far better than many other Carribian states - look at Haiti, for example. Heck, Cuba's lifespan is almost as long as that of the US. What a horrible example. There are plenty of examples of socialist collapse out there, but Cuba's a rather poor example

The current regime would never have survived its initial forray into communism without Soviet patronage and brutal repression (which continues to this day.. that's "better"?). And they're "thriving" now because of other countries (in Europe and elsewhere) that enjoy having Cuba as a tropical destination, and are willing to overlook the attrocious human rights situation there. Hard to imagine a better example than a place that's willing to imprison and even execute people for trying to leave. "Strong-man" run socialism sure is wonderful! Just like Chavez says it is!

A normal jet engine sucks in air, compresses it with several large turbines, adds fuel and ignites it. In a ramjet the air is compressed by the motion of the engine through the air, think basically a tube that tapers inwards. There are no moving parts, the fowards motion of the unit itself generates the compression.

Problem is, this doesn't work at supersonic speeds. A scramjet is ramjet shaped to work with supersonic air flowing through it... not a simple thing to design, obviously.

a nuclear rocket doesn't work by using combustion, it uses a nuclear reactor core and passes either air from the atmosphere or some on-board fuel through the core to get it very hot... So it expans, exits the rear, and propels the rocket fowards.

Since a nuclear rocket exhaust would be highly radioactive, you wouldn't want to run one in the atmosphere. Not in my back yard, anyway! In the late eighties the US planned to test a nuclear powered rocket over New Zealand as part of the "Timberwind" project in the early 80s (from memory).

I happen to know about Nestle's wrong doings very well. My mum was a member of the Nursing Mothers Association of Australia (now the Australian Breastfeeding Association) and was local leader for a little while. So I grew up around a lot of this stuff :P

IIRC, the "first" problem was that poverty caused the mothers to stretch the baby formula as far as they could. This left the infants severely under-nourished. You're right about the second problem: very poor sanitation in many areas meant that the water used was often contanimated with raw sewerage. The people didn't know to boil the water because of poor education and couldn't even read the instructions on the can, which would have told them to do so.

It looks like you've already gotten some knee-jerk responses from MS fanboys, so I'll make the analogy (as I see it) clear:

• The mothers were advised by docters who were on the take from Nestle, and encouraged by advertising to be "modern" like the west. The doctors often handed the mother their first can of infant formula free, "donated" by Nestle.
• With this "donated" software, these third-world countries desire to be "modern", just like the west. They will probably be "advised" by MS or others with an interest. This first batch of MS software is donated but who says it will be free in the future?

• The mothers almost always had to water down the formula to make it last longer on their meager earnings. The water was also contaminated with raw sewerage, resulting in very sick infants and many deaths.
• I'm sure these countries will try to also stretch this donated software as far as they can. There will be unauthorized copying and MS will no doubt crack down on "piracy" in the future. We've in fact seen MS do this many times already. It's almost a given.

• The mothers' own milk supply would "dry up", so to speak, leaving them dependant the formula to feed their infant.
• These "donations" by MS could also be seen as dumping. It may seem like the easy was to jump-start a countrys software industry, but in the long run it will limit it, if not stifle it. This will lock many administrators and developers into knowing only MS systems. It will likely also affect any local open-source development, both now and in the future.

Does anyone honestly think that putting that bit of money elsewhere would solve whatever domestic problems you want fixed? Have we yet cured hunger, poverty, or undereducation? No? Well, we've been throwing billions at them so far.

Perhaps part of the problem is that the US is more interested in "solving problems" in other countries than dealing with domestic problems. The US currently spends 4-5 times more on the military than it does on educating its own citizens. See page 51.
