A Microsoft Tactic?
Does anyone think that microsoft may try to capitalize on people's fears of Google having complete access to email and the like? Seems like it might be a good option for them to attempt even though it would be pure hypocrisy.

More Political Discussion
The anti-trust case seemed to disappear from the media very quickly once the Bush administration came in. I think Microsoft is going to get less support now because of the EU anti-trust lawsuits as well. It will be interesting to see if there is a different decision reached between the states and the EU.

Definitely agree. She was absolutely gorgeous in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." Anyway, the new spidey will probably good as was X2 in my opinion. Now, catwoman on the other hand..

Real Problems
Sadly, most of the streaming video is still reliant on Real from my experience. However, most places now have quicktime/mpeg alternatives. Does anyone know if Apple's new codec which will be released with Panther is planning on being Open Source? It is supposedly going to be able to be used for video streams.

Possibility of Spam
Hoaxes are not just powerful at getting a message across, but they can be amazingly powerful for spammers. Imagine spammers creating hoaxes that go out to 1,000,000 email addresses. Assuming 1% goes through and that each one of those people forwards to another 20 people will allow spammers to distribute a link to some product for free after the first 1,000,000. Also, this will take the legal strain off of the spammers themselves?
Are any companies currently doing this?

Surprising..
With all of the new acts being put into place during our current Republican country, it is good to see something logical coming out of Washington these days (DC not Redmond). But, we still have the FCC.

Nothing New...
Seems as if they already have access to that information via a laptop in their autos, and now it is just an easier way of getting access to it. As a frequent traveller, it doesnt really bother me. Big brother keeps expanding anyway, especially with the *gasp* Patriot Act...

Safari RSS + Trailblazer = Cool!
If only Apple would have taken the time to implement the awesome history viewing of Trailblazer. Even though TrailBlazer is not a full featured browser, I still use it for some "show off" tendencies on my mac.
Steve, find these kids and put the functionality into Safari!

Just Like Anything Else...
The problem with teaching Comp Sci, let alone "hacking," is the methodology in which the teachers teach. The only way I ever learned any type of programming was when someone said, "Go build an application that simulates RSA cryptography." 12 C++ files later I learned more then I did in 2 years of "intro" classes. The same goes for this as well, these kids wont get much more out of these classes then learning to use some scripts or demon dial or whatever.
They should get a project that entitles building some sort of application which can be relseased to the Open Source community.
Wow, war dialing, early 90s, wow.

Market Statistics
Does anyone have a good website which outlines just how many low-end processors are sold every year? From my POV, I cannot understand how the low-end processors survive. Granted, they use less power for mobile applications, but I would rather spend an extra $30-$50 on a processor then most other components of the system.
Or is it all just marketing?

Won't Happen
The NWS is pretty hardup for cash right now in order to waste money on developing Internet standards. This is probably a vapor article, which won't effect any of our little applications anyway. I use "WeatherPop" for the mac. It sits in the menu bar real nice and does not annoy me, which is the most important factor
;).

Secret of Mana
All I have to say is Secret of Mana was probably the best game ever. Since that point in time, I have never enjoyed a video game because of the pseudo-realism and new format of RPGs. FF7 was a great game, but still those old 2d Nintendo games were just awesome. I remember how I used to look forward to every new release of game in order to see "better graphics" ie: FF2->FF3... but, now I want the games to lose quality. It seems all the game makers went from story lines to graphics.
I have a friend who is writing a 2d RPG on OSX. He is pretty far in the programming, and no, i dont have a website, but i'm sore the /. community will know about it once it is released.

Just Another Reason For News
Like most security measures, there will always be some sort of method of bypassing the security. However, the recording industries must waste money trying to convince consumers and management that evil MP3s will not be created. Honestly, in the worst case scenario, I could always play the CD on my home stereo and connect the output into the audio-in on my PC and record the damn thing in SoundForge or the like.
I guess it is just people doing their jobs. :(

The "R Prize"
Some rich mogul should setup a $10,000,000 purse for the first company that can make a robot which can walk, understand commands and act them out, and not bump into an item and fall over all for under $2000. ie: go downstairs and get me a soda, go make the bed, whatever...
Maybe something like that would spur some more activity into the robot sector.

Long Time Until it Replaces B/G
Even if I is going to be the new wireless standard, there is going to be many years until it becomes it. G was supposed to become the new standard, and I am rarely in a situation where my Powerbook picks up a G signal.
Does anyone have any figures on how long between products get rolled out until inception in the digital world? I would be curious to see the timeliens of some products such as: 3.0megapixel cameras, DSL/Cable, 802.11b/g, etc.

0.001%
Does anyone know the cumulative total of all the RIAA lawsuits? These are just being instantiated in order to scare the general populus into thinking they get sued. Sure, go download music as much as you want but if you share it you get sued. It is definitely a one way street.
What I don't understand is that I can have an archive of music on a network and someone can "break in" and steal that music from me and then I can get sued by the RIAA. Where is the logic in that!

What About Refills?
If the items are so small then how much energy can they realistically generate? Sure, I may get an extra five hours of my iPod, but if I have to go though the trouble of refilling the damn thing instead of just plugging it in, then I don't see the point.
I like portable fuel cells for laptop use because you can get about 18 hours out of one cell, which is great for flights to India, but when else do you really need that much battery life?

Not first Unix store...
I think Apple holds the title for selling first *nix/*bsd based store, and I think they did it quite successfully too. What about online vendors that have "locations" and not stores exactly. I don't think I give these guys the title slashdot has bestowed upon them.

Already the Future
I think Vint Cerf had a similar article to this a few months back, which dealt with the difference between computing now and in the future. His main point was similar in that all communication will be IP based and that IPv6 will accomodate for those spaces. Another interesting point was that he stated that computers would no longer rely on human to computer interaction, but more computer to computer reaction.
Personally, I think companies are already doing similar things like Apple's XGRID.

My Experience
My company has had experience using XGRID on our G4 notebooks. We always leave XGRID running and when we are at the office it is like having 20-30CPUs available at any given time. Now with Linux, we can have about 300 CPUs available, I just wonder how efficient it really is in the non-osx atmosphere.
Time to find the download.

"Sensitive Data"
The data that I have provided to airlines has definitely not been sensitive. I have never been queried for my DOB, SSN, Driver's License #, or any unique information besides my name. I think there is a big flaw with the airlines in that anyone can purchase an airline ticket for anyone else. Anyone else can then get a "non-legitamate" ID card and get on an airplane. If they disclose when I travel, then maybe the data can be considered sensitive, but then again me leaving my car at long term parking will provide the same information.

Invasion
I must admit that I am not upto date on these new anti-spam software packages, which operate on the server side. However, what is the probability of real mail getting rejected by these things. It seems almost like an invasion of privacy to block my own email even if it is from a "benevolant big brother" perspective.
I guess that is why there are privacy policies though.

Simply Scary
Genetic life should not be able to be owned. It would be the same as if I owned the DNA sequence to create a fish. Would it also mean that each person technically owns their DNA or any other type of unique chemical composition? This could open up an extremely dangerous black market of genetic trade. ie: I could sell my DNA strand on the black market for money, and then I could be freely cloned etc.
I got off topic, just thinking out loud.

Origami as an Art
It seems to me that this is just taking another piece of art and removing the uniqueness of it. By taking Origami to a technical level is similar to looking at computer generated images instead of works of art. Granted, the ideas that are being calculated are still unique, but the look and feel may not be.

My Website uses different methods to atract the audience I want. Specifically, targeted google ads are providing my site much of the needed traffic and I am getting a 1-5% account creation ratio. However, I do get just misc. search engine traffic to the site which i use trackers to analyze.
Just my $0.02.

Enterprise Level
Realistically, at the enterprise level, Linux isnt free. The maintenance/administrative of Linux just becomes costly in my experience. Im sure I am in the minority when saying this, but it has just been my experience that even though I have to continuously do Microsoft refreshes, their software works better ouf of box.
OSX is the best option ;)

Easily Tracked?
In my understanding, ISPs are able to easily track torrent downloads do to the seeding algorithms. If torrents become more mainstream, people will have more protection in downloading them as there will be more for the governments to regulate.
Thoughts?

Sadly OSX is Next
I use OSX since I never get virii or worms, but they are coming to the mac soon enough. Although, everyday I am using windows less and less and only for Oracle development (OAF/JDEV) because of my job.
I guess the only thing to learn from the blaster worm is to switch to OSX. ;)

Company Changes...
Energy costs at a company I worked for in SiValley were becoming such a factor that they dropped the use of all CRT monitors and towers in the work place. They switched us all to thinkpads. Now, on a small level this is very inefficient, but from a large perspective, I am assuming the energy cost savings would be enormous. My tower/crt costs me at least $25+ per month at home. I could easily lease a lowlevel laptop for that.

Reaction Time?
That is amazing that there is that amount of data streaming down the pipelines, however, does this help the driver in the actual race? If so, is there regulation for that? I understand that the data can be later analyzed and then used for tuning, but the data should also be able to recognize if there is an engine error and the car is going to instantly explode.

Benefits of Big Brother
What you are talking about are reasons why people are trying to promote RFID. However, in order to track "MIA" laptops you would need to allow big brother to track all RFID tags in productions. Thus, if you went to starbucks with a stolen laptop the RFID scanner would immediately recognize this and you would get arrested. On the other hand, if you didnt steal your laptop anyone can track where you are and where you have been.
Good Plusses/Minuses.

.NET and C# are finally starting to migrate over into commercial use. There were ideas in the early 90s by those of us who were smalltalk developers that we wanted to see back then. It isnt until now that C# is finally integrating some of those features for development use.

Re:You may
Thank you. I have received exactly what I was hoping to get from the slashdot community, and I forgot how much of a factor personal sites can have even if they are 6 years old (some of the pages anyway). I have some excellent suggestions, however, the suggestions saying to "stay away" from Day Trading is because people have not seen the business plan. I guess I just need a synonym for Day Trading besides: momentum trading, swing trading, etc.
As I stated earlier, this website is just serving to create a user base and show an investor that there is something there. Something I did not mention was the investors that I have approached work within my company or are related via family/friends. I have not spoken with strangers about the product until now.

XGRID
Recently, I have been working a lot with Apple's xgrid. We have been linking about 4 G5s/G4s together and getting impressive results. I don't understand your hardware situation, but if you are a Mac guy try it out.

What about Apple?
I am an Apple lover, but the G5 is going to start feeling some pressure from the dual core chips. I wonder if the rumor of Apple possibly switching to an Intel Processor could becoming more and more valid every day.
I'll still take a G5 notebook within the next year :).
Im trying to get a new site off the ground, so if you guys are interested check it out GroupShares.com. It is a day trading/stock community.

Clear Channel Dropped Stern..
Clear Channel dropped Howard Stern from my local radio stations. I used to listen every morning while getting ready at home. Maybe we can do live streams of radio from all over the country via this protocol, and I can get through Clear Channel's "indecency measures."
GroupShares.com -
Personal Blogs
I run two different blogs and it is amazing the response I get between both of them. I recently started a stock market blog and I have gotten an enormous user base within one week. However, you have to be careful about what you say so that you cannot get sued. Thus, I had to have a lawyer draw up a disclaimer when registering to my site.
Will politicians use lawyers to stop these blogs? I know I am very fearful of that. -
Howard Stern Gone.. Internet Radio Gone...
Well, this was only a matter of time. Most people I know listen to Internet Radio more then their own libraries anymore especially on iTunes. Does this mean that Sirius is going to get regulated too because of broadcasting music at such a high quality? What about the people in the 80s/90s who listened to regular radio and recorded songs to tape?
Second, I was always a subtle Howard Stern fan, but now with what is going on with clear channel, his broadcasts are more entertaining then just the stupid fart jokes. He really is going through a struggle, and the FCC/RIAA are seeing great times to strike out with the election.
Let's stop going back in the time machine...
Thanks,
Aj

Awesome.
This is a great use of how powerful the Internet can become. These guys are going to get a ton of traffic and have a viable site now because of slashdot. Wow. Anyway, I also tried to start a dotcom this week - GroupShares.com - and it had a very successful first week. About 50 registered users and some ad money from adsense - enough to Incorporate in FL anyway. Goes to show that if you do enough work, maybe anyone can get a dotcom off the ground.
Cool.
