Re:What did Blizzard lose?
Okay, I followed your link, and the link from that, and came across a screenshot. If I didn't know otherwise (I'm still not too certain), I'd assume it was WarCraft II before the graphics were finalized. I'd say shutting it down was pretty justified.
As for cheats on battle.net, well, as far as I know, there aren't too many for War3. As for D2, it's just incredible how people are with that game.
And bnetd couldn't run D2, could it? So much for that excuse.
I'm pretty sure everyone knows bnetd as the only reason the War3 beta was so severely leaked. Does anyone know anyone who's played on it before or since? I don't. -

Re:No
Ok I'll bite,
Maybe he wants to play the linux versions of Unreal Tournament 2003, or Medal of Honor, or Neverwinter Nights, or Quake3, or Return to Castle Wolfenstein, or Enemy Territory, or Savage , or Rune, or SpaceTripper, or Tribes 2 or Serious Sam, or Postal2, or America's Army or another of the various other games on Linux that requires 3D acceleration. Sure, a far cry from what's available on windows, but more games then I'll ever have time to play. -
Re:Duke Nukem 3DI suggest you try Icculus' Duke Nukem 3D GNU/Linux port if you want to play it rather than fiddling with dosemu or dosbox (which will surely be too slow as it emulates the entire cpu).
The same goes for all the games mentioned in the guide - Quake, Wolf3D, Doom all have versions that can be run natively on GNU/Linux and some are also greatly enhanced. Schorched Earth's original version isn't but several remakes are. The Linux Game Tome is a good starting place if you wish to obtain these.
It's interesting how it might be easier to run legacy Dos apps in GNU/Linux than in Windows (XP) these days. My friend's been dreaming of running a certain old dos game on his WinXP system, but all he has is Dosbox which doesn't run it and even if it did, it would be unplayably slow.

Liquid war, glTron & Armagetron, Flight Gear
Find these, and tons of other Linux games (just browse around for multiplayer!), over at The Linux Game Tome.
That site's been around since before I was even using Linux (1998), so I'm shocked to find people who've never seen it!!! -
Linux Game Tome
Check out the Linux Game Tome. Look for games with a rating of 4 (out of 5), or 5 with a lot of votes. (those with a few votes of 5 normally are idiots who don't know how to rank a game... Xbill is cool, but the design isn't worth a 5)
-
LiquidWar
Did a search on the titles and it seems nobody has yet pointed to Liquid War (at least not properly naming it in the title of their post). Winner of Most Unique/Original Game in the HappyPuppy 2002 awards. Simple, yet fun. Controls couldn't be any simpler and multiplayer action is reasonably well paced, not "frantic" (usually), yet not slow, either (again, usually).
Worth a try. -
Linux distro's need to partner...
More aggressively with game developers. I mean its sort of sad that even though there are a handful of active commercial (and non-commercial albeit high quality as in my sig) game developers who are supporting Linux there is still the perception that Linux doesn't have games.
Gentoo seems to get it, but I'd expect to see a more aggressive commercial distribution seriously pimping this and I believe in we really need some good exposure like this. -

Re:Originality
That's one example.
Unfortunately the rest of the free (which are mainly OS) games in the Happy Penguin winners state otherwise:
Frozen Bubble, a rip-off of Puzzle Bobble
Freeciv, a clone of Civ
BZFlag, a re-implementation of BattleZone
In fact, I found a list of all the games that were up for that award, one of which was a Dance Dance Revolution clone... I only hope someone was joking when they nominated it.
-
Originality
"...the consensus among gamers and developers is that open source games still lag behind proprietary games in originality, sophistication, and artwork"
I disagree with OS games not being original. Liquid Wars won Happy Penguin's "Most Original Linux Game 2002", and is IMO on of the most original games I've ever played.
Just my 2 cents -
Re:LGP who?Who cares about me? I wouldn't buy a Linux game now, but I am a potential customer. They better care about me. Otherwise, I'm an opportunity they passed up. I bet there's a whole lot more of people like me than people like you out there.
While I _did_ have a
:) at the end of my original comment. If you do have some real interest, look at a couple of the Linux gaming sites......and a place to buy them.
What needs to be worked on, like I said before, is making a market for Linux by establishing a desktop presence and get some key companies supporting Linux. Until then, the handful of Linux gamers will have to settle with what little they have while the rest of the world has some fun.
Erm, I'm having plenty of fun here, and I honestly have no problem spending my limit on Linux games. Go read. Go play. See what's actually out there.

Re:Fun Game
Or you could try the Free Software equivalents, of which there are 2 that I know of:
* Neverball
* Trackballs
One of the common misconceptions with Free Software is that there are not many high quality games. There are many, many high quality Free Software games.
Talking of game quality... isn't that why Atari went bust? If you don't make good games or good games hardware packaged with good games any more, people won't pay for them. -

Reasons for shutting down FreeCraft
As I recall, the original reasons for shutting down FreeCraft were that the name was too similar to WarCraft and that the engine borrowed a few too many ideas from WC. With this in mind, the new games and the engine have a different names, thats good, but what about the engine functionality?
From the Stratagus FAQ:
[...] since the Warcraft2 support is already there we don't indent break it [...]
Does this mean it's still close to the original? If so, is the new name enough to keep Blizzard at bay? -
skeaking of classig games...
I recently played XKobo, a very addictive yet simple game, that reminds me of old classig games. But I haven't found a homepage or much more info. They're listed at the Happy Penguin site.

Re:One word:
As well as emulators, those of us who use Operating Systems with poor unemulated support of commercial games inevitably fall back on timeless classics when programmers are too lazy or unskilled to write something as cool as Freeciv or Crystal Space.
Just check out The Linux Game Tome to see how old games can be kept alive ;) -
Alpha Platform..
I get sick and tired of non-enlightened computer users knocking a modern (Alpha) architecture just because the company selling them didn't price them low enough for use in the present.
The Alpha's problem was shitty marketing. When the marketers couldn't think of somthing better to market than "It is the Windows NT dream workstation", there was a problem... People didn't buy it because it was too expensive, and in-turn the numerous companies (Samsung, API Networks, IBM, Penguin Computing, DEC) selling the hardware would only raise the price to make-up for low sales (2% market share). The result: an architecture 3 years more advanced than anything Intel and Sun could put out, combined, stuck in a prison of Federal Reserve Notes. Alpha burned. It's followers were the IT technologists that held onto them when their companies upgraded to even better Alphas. You know a Good Thing(TM) when it is tossed in the dumpster for an upgrade, and performs 2x faster than the latest Pentium3 out-of-box-trashcan.
To make a short story shorter, there is a growing intelect repository on the Alpha architecture. Some people want to purchase the patents from Intel and AMD, in order to open-source the Alpha architecture in favor of a 100% open-source computing platform. This will work wonders; 64bit clean architecture, consistent instruction set, wonderfuly optimized native C compiler for Linux.
As of note, someone on LinuxGames or HappyPenguin was talking about a homebrew dual Alpha (ev5/6/7?) based PDA. Would'nt that rock? Open-source arch, PDA-sized modules, SMP, portable; what more can you ask other than some good power managment support? Well, I dunno about low-power; the purpose of the project is portability and small-size super-computing on a 100% free and 100% documented architecture. Remember, a mere 400MHz Alpha ev6 out-performs a Pentium4 at 2000MHz as well as a mere old-school Alpha ev5 out-powerforms a Pentium3 1000MHz; and Alpha ev5 and ev6 are still ontop of a 100MHz BUS!

The Linux Game Tome: happypenguin.org
I don't know if you will find a *good* cross platform games database, but for commercial, free and shareware games for Linux, nothing beats happypenguin.org. The ratings system isn't the best, but the user comments and forums make up for that. When a version of a game exists for another platform, it's often noted.

If looks a LOT more than trademark...
If this is a correct screenshot here, it looks like a hell-of-a-boatload of copyright infringement, as the artwork looks to be directly taken from Warcraft 2, which is a BIG no-no.
This is a large company protecting its copyrights, not just trademarks.

Re:Good to see some progress here!
Perhaps the most damning thing about Linux is the hugely conservative community surrounding it. Cries of "If you want change then _you_ do it"...
Come on now. You've been give at least 4 quality free Windowing toolkits (GTK, QT, TK, and wxWindows) all well documented with full source code. You've been given every possible language to program in and nearly every library has a binding to every goofy language imaginable. You've been given at least 3 IDE's for C/C++ that are comparable with Visual C++, a whole slew of editors to program the scripting flavor of the month, boatloads of documentation including free commercial quality books on programming. You've got at least a dozen apps to mimic each and every commonly used windows app (FTP clients, WinZip clones, Media Players, Office Suites, Image Editors, etc etc) And to top it all off 1/3 of this stuff has been ported to Windows so you don't have to even deal with GNU/Linux itself.
If it's conservative given all of this to expect the endless stream of people with ideas to get off their asses and write something to show how perfect their idea is, then yes, the Free software community is quite conservative.
You should take a look at the forums on HappyPenguin. At least once a week someone shows up with an "idea" for a game that they want someone else to write for them, for free. Get a grip, ideas are a dime a dozen. I want to see it working before I contribute my free time to helping impliment someone else's ideas. -

Re:Hey I've an idea
What they expect is to release some games for Linux people to play, no more. Their approach is very different to Loki's - they're not attempting to port every AAA title in existence to Linux, they look for quality titles that they can get for a price that will still let them profit even with the current (small) size of the Linux gaming community.
They're not targeting the people who want to play every new game that exists on the face of the earth like Loki seems to have attempted. (ie. hardcore gamers)
And yes, I believe LGP is managed better. Michael Simms has an idea of the kind of demand there is and will be as he also runs tuxgames.com, *the* Linux game reseller. He also watched Loki do it's mistakes in the past and I have no doubt that he doesn't plan on repeating them.
By the way, they already contacted the publishers of Tribes 3 here. They promised to get in touch about it. :)
There's an interesting transcript of an IRC interview with Michael Simms that I've been suprised to not see on Slashdot here. Apparently they're going to assign one of their developers to improve some GPL titles up to commercial quality. Very interesting stuff. -
Re:Linuxlookup story plagiarised from happypenguin
There is no ambiguity here. There was no press release. I wrote an original summary of the LGP team and their accomplishments. I posted that summary as news to my site. Some time later, this other site copied my work word-for-word and represented it as their own.

Linuxlookup story plagiarised from happypenguin
The entire writeup at linuxlookup.com was lifted verbatim from my announcement at happypenguin.org. As far as I know, this team has not been announced *anywhere* yet besides happypenguin. Plagiarism sucks, guys.

You are a luser. Why -o- why would you download it from a pirate site if you already own it?
For that matter, why download anything from a pirate site? I cannot even keep up with all the new free Linux games that pop up every day on Happy Penguin.
Yeah, back in the pioneer days of the internet I hit a few warez sites, but you are taking a big risk these days. I suggest you hit the bargian bin instead and spend some time installing Debian or something if you want a lot of great games.
Don't even piss with warez sites. Funnel your efforts into more productive endeavors.
