No DVD support
Of all the little bells and whistles they could have added on, this one seemed the most obvious.
"Nintendo of America's vice president of marketing and corporate affairs, Perrin Kaplan, confirmed to IGN Wii today that its forthcoming Wii console will not play Hollywood DVD movies. The decision to remove the functionality was made in order to deliver the machine at a cheaper cost and because most people today already own DVD players."
http://wii.ign.com/articles/732/732730p1.html
Just makes no sense if they are really trying to "make Wii a living room centerpiece by shipping the system with features outside of the videogame realm" (http://wii.ign.com/articles/732/732669p1.html) -
Re:Wahoh!
According to http://wii.ign.com/articles/732/732669p1.html:
Nintendo's Wii console will come packaged with one Wii remote, one nunchuck attachment, an AC adapter, an audio/video cable, a sensor bar, sensor bard stand, a Wii console stand and two batteries. The US package will also come bundled with a copy of Wii Sports, a compilation sports game that best shows off the mechanics of the system's unique controller. Wii Sports features tennis, baseball, golf and previously unannounced bowling and boxing games. -
Re:Good news for normal humans
I'm just totally over the idea of paying $500+ for a machine, and $50+ for games, when they're extremely high-res, high-speed, and SHIT.
Who says PS3 games will be shit? Great gameplay and great visuals are not mutually exclusive.
The Wii gives me hope that there's something out there for people who like gameplay, not graphics, and have better things to spend the big bucks on than a friggin' procrastinaion console. Nice one, Nintendo.
Who says Wii games will have better gameplay? Wiimote alone doesn't guarantee great gameplay, as controls are only a part of the equation. Besides, nobody (except developers with lots of hands-on experience) really knows whether Wiimote is any good.
The gameplay on Wii must be stunning if the release games look like this: GT Pro screenshots (oh, please do not start talking about the Wii Splinter Cell shots, they were taken from a PC development board and still looked horrible)
To me, PS3 and Xbox360 represent progress. Releasing an old console in a new casing (Wii) is not progress. Ask any developer what they would like to improve on the platform they are developing for and the most likely answer is "more memory, more storage, faster CPU and better graphics". Wii fans seem to have a very hard time understanding that performance and the ability to display great graphics is not a big, evil gameplay-killing monster. It's exactly the opposite: the more resources you have at your disposal, the less compromises you have to make in terms of gameplay. Do you know how many times developers have said to themselves "we would have loved to do that, but PS2/Xbox/Gamecube couldn't handle it"? Expect to see lots of "multiplatform" games released for both PS3 and Xbox 360, but not for Wii because making compromises isn't worth it.
Advances in technology have made games like Oblivion possible. Is Oblivion better than the RPG games we had ten years ago? Yes, it definitely is. Similar examples can be found in any genre.
ps. I too do think that PS3 pricing is crazy and won't be getting one anytime soon, but the road Sony is taking (i.e. push absolute cutting edge technology to the market) is, in the long run, the right one for Sony and the gamers too.

Re:Wii or calculus
I remember reading somewhere that the Wii can output to VGA. Found it, http://cube.ign.com/articles/522/522559p2.html halfway down the screen.

Wii Price, Launch Date Revealed -- Its here
Breaking info:
September 13, 2006 - According to an article at the Seattle PI that is reporting on an article in the New York Times, Nintendo plans to announce the Wii will debut in North and South America on November 19 for $250.
Thursday's announcement should also reveal that Nintendo plans to provide gamers with more than 25 new titles for the Wii this year.
The NYT reports that every Wii will include Wii Sports. Additional games for the Wii are reportedly priced at $50 each. About 30 classic downloadable Virtual Console games should be available this year and will cost about $5-$10 each.
The Wii will also include a "Photo Channel" which will allow users to use their Wii to share digital photos via their television. In addition there will be news and weather channels.

Re:An HDTV isn't all you need to enjoy the PS3...
re:"you completely discount the entire launch lineup of the Wii based on one title"
That would be because Nintendo is pushing it first and foremost along with (yet another - ooo that's innovation baby!) Mario game - which isn't slated for launch. So between the Nintendo hype machine talking up two (pounded into mulch) francheises - there's only one being hypertouted for launch. As far as the graphics and similarities, check out a Nintendo-centric site for yourself:
http://wii.ign.com/articles/707/707152p3.html
"When blown up to large sizes at Nintendo's press conferences, Wii's inability to display higher resolutions than 640x480 made things look jaggy and "dirty"...if you're expecting an upgrade from the GameCube incarnation of TP shown at last year's E3, you're in for a disappointment, however. The texture resolution and overall look are firmly rooted in GameCube code so far. Likewise, Link's animation when moving from complete standstill to walking and running still looks overly stiff just like in last year's GCN demo"
This is from a site SUPPORTING the Wii. I was thinking of getting one myself (because there are other titles from Nitendo that are fun), but I'm really not looking to downgrade my gameplay to retro status - to play what Nintendo continues hyping which are essentially "Retro" titles.
But that's just me. -
Some "confirmed" titlesESRB leaks list of Sega titles for Virtual Console.
In case you don't want to go to IGNorant.com, here's the list:- Ecco the Dolphin
- Altered Beast
- Toe Jam & Earl
- Golden Axe
- Columns
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Ristar
Once has to wonder, though, why we haven't seen more titles. Perhaps the ESRB is keeping a tighter lid on Nintendo and Turbografix titles (though there were some expected titles listed at E3), or Sega applied for their ratings earlier. -
SEGA's more or less official list
Sega's more or less official Virtual Console lineup is here at IGN. There are Sega games on that list that aren't on that 26 game list posted in the summary so I think that 26 game list is probably fake.

A few slight quibbles
1. It's cheaper.
While it may be cheaper (although from the sounds of it the PS3 may only be slightly so), it is also not upgradable. Graphics starting to look a bit old? Well tough luck on a console until a new console comes out and you have to shell out money for an entirely new system, even if the processor, etc. works well. On a PC (at least a desktop), you can just replace the graphics card.
2. Every game is guaranteed to work
Good point, although if your computer isn't more that 3-4 years old, this isn't likely to be a problem. By this amount of time, you would still likely have to buy a new console to play the most recent games.
3. You needn't tweak
This may be true, but it's not an entirely good thing. If you have less money to spend on your PC, you may not have the best parts, but through a bit of tweaking you can still play games. If you do have a ton of money, you can get the best parts and tweak a bit so you can play those games at nicer settings, and you can also upgrade parts as desired.
4. Lots of console exclusives
Granted, and this is probably the most valid point. Although I will say that there are some PC exclusives that people tend to use (Word, Excel, etc). People with consoles still tend to have to buy PC's anyway for these. If you are a really hardcore gamer, the availablity of exclusive games available on consoles will make the difference.
5. Xbox Live. Aside from Battlefield 2, I can't think of any online game that's currently better on PC.
How about PC only? Might I introduce you to a game called World of Warcraft? 7 million people reportedly enjoy it. While consoles may be better for FPS's, I would say that PC's with mouse and keyboard are better for social interaction in such games, and also lend themselves to be more easily updated with fresh content (i.e. WoW patches/expansions that can update the game fairly extensively).
6. Backwards compatibility
And how are people enjoying playing their Super Nintendo cartridges on their game cubes? Yes, perhaps Sony may be doing a better job of this, but others aren't. In addition you're paying for it.
7. Virus, adware, and spyware free
Chances are (especially given that this person wrote an article) that the author uses some sort of Word Processor, which means they are using a PC, which means that they already have to deal with these things. My suggestion to the author? Just be careful and stop visiting his midget porn websites. People tend to get into trouble most frequently when they voluntarily go to really questionable websites.
8. Games look better in high-def...from the couch.
The author even admits that PC's can do higher resolution graphics and modern TV's have digital inputs that will let you watch stuff from your computer on your TV (heck, there are a number of TV/Monitors out on the market these days). There are tons of wireless devices for PC's out on the market. You can play/work on your TV on your couch using your PC if you so choose. You can then switch back to your desk if you so choose and use your higher resolution monitor. The choice is yours with a PC. Not so with a console.
9. Controllers are more comfortable
So buy a comfortable, wireless controller for your PC. There's a ton of variations out there for you to choose from.
10. Controller innovation (Citing the Wii)
But wait a second, wasn't the author just talking about the backwards compatibility of the Sony Playstation? Can I play my old Super Nintendo games on it? Are you saying you want me to buy both a PS3 and a Wii (heck, there goes the price advantage of the consoles).
Most of the reasons given for using a console are just BS. If you are a hardcore gamer and need those exclusive games, then that's the reason to go for a console. Additionally if you are away from home and looking for a bit of gaming, then the handheld consoles are going to be hard to beat. -

It's available for the DS, as well. Same manufacturer I believe. The Best Buy and Fry's near me carry 'em. They plug in to the GBA port and work like a charm, apparently.

Re:Interested in performance.
man wow, my grammar was pretty bad in that post... wish I had previewed. Anyway here are some screen shots for the games I was talking about if anyone is interested:
Xbox: Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Doom 3, Chronicles of Riddick
GC: Resident Evil 4
PS2: Shaddown of the Colossus, God of War, Tekken 5
Thinking about good looking game cube games one of the games that comes to mind is Soul Calibur II, though the game looks just as good and fantastic on every console, I think the GC version is the best simply because it included Link. Though, one thing thing the Xbox version included that the other two versions didn't... was that it could render the game in 720p HD. -

"You keep using that word...
...I do not think it means what you think it means." Anyway, I think by 'glove' they mean an enclosure to fit over the wiimote, similar to the many mockups done by IGN and other websites around the time of E3. Here's an example As cool as it would be to have another power glove... probably not gonna happen. -

Re:look to literature
I guess you could classify games with only one tag, but it would be extremely useless. In order to classify a game you need not only to classify its setting and story but also its gameplay and type of interation.
Turn-based, Real-time Action;
3D, 2D, 4D(PS3 added a new dimension to gaming :D) ;
Frist Person, 3rd person, Ortogonal;
And those are only technical tags for the gameplay. -
Re:missing 2 buttons
Yes, because no one has been able to play a Wii and use the motion sensitive controllers. All the videos posted all over Youtube and gaming review sites of people playing the games are doctored. Oh, and the Apollo never happened, too, right?
WTF? Right now, Wii looks a heck of a lot more tangible than the PS3's motion controller. -
What's the deal with the driver disk?
Looking at the driver disk it looks like a lightscribe disk or something. Anyone have any idea if this is pre-release package or if that is how the disk actually looks?
The idea itself is interesting, but I think the most interesting part is that it has a usb port and can theoretically be programmed to do certain other non-gaming tasks. Unfortunately it would probably have to catch on before any interesting hacks turn up for it. It doesn't seem likely catch on though unless they reduce the price at least by half. -

Re:What the heck is with Sony?
I'd be willing to bet that by the end of 2007 there won't be a whole lot of difference in graphical appearance between the consoles.
Back when the Wii was still more rumor then fact and no screenshots released I would have thought the same, but with all the games I have seen so far there already is a huge graphical differente between XBox360 games and Wii games, bejoint just 480p vs 720p. If you look at some games like Battilion Wars 2 they already don't look very good by past generations standards, even Zelda or Mario can't impress that much and they are the best looking Wii games I have seen so far. On the other side you have on the XBox360 or PS3 games like Dead Rising or Assassins Creed, which do look a lot more impressive, not just because they have funky shader stuff, but also because they can handle huge crowds, something that isn't just a graphical gymick that might be ignorable, but something that actually can impact game play a lot.
Wii lack of power could turn out to not just into a little less good graphics, but might also turn out to hinder some gameplay innovations, like large crowds. If that will really happen we have to see, but so far I haven't seen anything on the Wii that could really impress me, except of course the controller, but a good controller doesn't make a good game.

Profit!
The problem with TFA's thinking, though, is that Sony is in a completely different position from Microsoft and Nintendo. Nintendo spent relatively little developing the Wii, they will probably sell the console at a small loss if any, and their existing console has almost no momentum at all. From this position, if Nintendo captures 30% of the market they will have achieved a massive success.
No loss, profit (assuming around a $200 console cost). On top of that, it going to pretty cheap to develop a Wii game compared to the competion. Let's see, it's profitable for Nintendo and cheaper for both developers and gamers. Regardless of each companies position right now, I'd say Nintendo is sitting in a good position right about now. -
Re:again?
When your entire Sales forecast for fiscal 2006 is $70.6 billion, but a single division is responsible for an operating loss of $2.6 in a single quarter, that division has a massive impact on the overall health of your company. Sony staked its future onto Blu-Ray and the PS3, and if these two tank, Sony will go down as well - or will have to get out of the gaming market.

Re:Follow the money?
I haven't read many strategy guides lately, maybe 10 or so in total, and I definitely haven't read any in the last couple years in either a seperate book version or print Computer Game magazine feature.
I've been disillusioned to them since I read the Diablo II strategy guide and like many I had read before it seemed to be a series of common sense suggestions, and a rehashing of in-game help & manual information. More importantly, it often suggested strategies, character builds, and skill combinations that were bad. The most annoying is information which is out of date or incorrect!
At least now I can go to gamefaqs or gaming websites if I want mediocre strategies and single-player walkthroughs (I generally don't).
I find a lot more useful information and effective strategies reading the most popular fan forums for the game in question. Yes, there is bullshit in the forums and information which is wrong, but the absolutely vital thing is that people usually get called out if the provide bad information, strategies that only work on 'easy', or are easily countered. People will sometimes (best cases) give hard evidence/examples/replays/game data to back up their claims, and will comment on whether patches have changed the effectiveness of any plan.
My recommendations:- Detailed information or strategy discussion -> Forums
- Walkthrough for an unenjoyable/unsolvable puzzle -> Gamefaqs
- Otherwise -> Enjoy the game unassisted
It's very possible I'm out of touch with most others and get more 'into' any game I play
Games I've played recently & best website I could find discussing them:
Civ 4 at Apolyton and Fanatics
Rise of Legends also Game Replays is a pretty popular site for Rise of Legends and other popular RTSes I don't play (C&C, AoE III, Act of War, Battle for Middle Earth).
Rise of Nations
Guild Wars
NWN Official Forums and NWVault

Diablo II
I've tried looking for a good place to find out about Star Wars: Battlefront II and Homeworld 2 but I haven't really found out what the most useful site for these games is.

Re:The problem is
At this point, the technology doesn't exist to do it well enough to keep it from getting repetitive. You just can't link things together with the subtlety and detail that a human can.
The roteness you describe can still apply to games that use static mission generation, such as Crime Cities. While there is a wide variety of backgrounds for the missions in the game, the all come down to destroying enemies. Even one of the first missions, where you simply have to pickup survey equipment, involves enemies that attack you. This ignores guarenteed failure missions, where it underhandedly states "Mission Failed" regardless of what you do (for example, you go to a depot to pickup an item, but fail the mission because they realise someone else did it first.)
The roteness increases on Very Hard difficulty, when the enemies are whittled down with the ultimate tactic while you do not take damage with their inaccurrate shots. Eventually, you reach a point in the game where you have to destroy a large quantity of enemies with extremely basic equipment and resources - which is much more tedious than most randomly generated missions.
(BTW, the ultimate tactic in Crime Cities is to move in reverse, strafe left/right, align the targetting rings with your targetting recticule and open fire while rapidly cycling through lasers and sonic weaponry. This is slightly less effective in protection missions, but works wonders.)So in games that do it (Freelancer would be an example) the variation actually makes it more rote.
In the case of Freelancer, there wasn't much variation to begin with. There were a few mission types that you'll recognize:
- Destroy a group of fighters.
- Capture an enemy leader for bounty.
- Destroy contraband from some enemies
- Destroy an outpost.
This isn't much of a dataset to work with when attempting to create dynamic missions. You can even tell for yourself, as the manual contained an storyline-based mission where a character had a contract with the Navy to transport goods from one place to another (although this is technically implied in the goods transportation gameplay mechanics.) The roteness of the gameplay can easily be fixed by improving the variety of the missions so that it would take a greater amount of time before bordem sets in.
There were escort missions suggested for one of Freelancers patches or expansion packs, which is one way to make things longer (and it doesn't even have to rely on scripting as enemies naturally attack trade lanes to interfere with excorting.) This mission type, even if it may be tedious, can still give information about lucrative trade routes, provided the game doesn't do something silly such as schedule a long-range shipment with a net profit of $2 per unit.
However, beyond this it becomes increasingly difficult to make new mission creation templates, but every one that is created will help slow down the bordem. -
There were implications of this a year ago..The first title that was announced to have online content for the wii was Super Smash Bros Brawl.
From the page:There was a reason Smash Bros. was announced at the meeting.
This information is backed up here. While it does not specifically state that SSBB would be the first wifi enabled wii title, it does say that it WILL be wifi enabled, and implies that it should be a release title.. Since it appears to have been pushed back by a few months, it is likely that we will, in fact, have to wait until 2007 for wifi enabled titles. i know the logic is shaky, but the implication is there. Of course, this isn't taking into account the possible changes to the launch lineup, and any wifi demo games that may ship with the console.
That was because when it was asked what product Nintendo would want to use to help it unveil its Wi-Fi Network, the first title
on the list in both America and Japan was Smash Bros. So it was first decided to talk about Smash Bros. as an example of a Wi-Fi
title, resulting in the game being announced before the development structure was finalized.
If i were nintendo, i'd certainly be shipping something small with the console, just to give people something to do while they waited for the big name titles, and for 'value added' credit. -
Re:Oh the joys.....
They just had a story arc which screams for a cheap shoot-em-up.
Last time I checked, it was already available. -
Re:memoriesThe only feasable use I ever found for my Powerglove was for re-enacting the self-destruct scene from Predator. In fact, it made #7 in IGN's 'worst game controllers of all time'
Oh, and Caaalliiforrniia!
I want a Powerglove again dang it.

Re:Ambidextrous Link?
From an IGN article on the Wii "In practice, regardless of game, you'll be able to play with either device in either hand. Miyamoto actually expects kids who've never played a game before to hold the remote in their left hand and the nunchuck in their right hand."
It is also possible that the dominant hand used will be stored systemwide with the sensetivity setting attatched to each controller -
Re:great timing...
There are very, very well done remakes of Diablo & Icewind Dale II: Heart of Winter for NWN however.
||shameless plug||
If you like the old Dark Sun setting, NWN &/or PvP you may want to check out Athas Reborn. Unfortunetley the server itself is down at the moment apparently because of a cut fiber.

Was not backed up by Warhawk developers
The same Warhawk developers who were so widely quoted as having said the motion sensing was "included at the last minute" actually only meant the got the controllers a week or two before E3 - but they had known about the motion sensing ability for much longer.
From the article:
Actually, Incognito has secretly been working with Sony on the tilt technology for a while, but it wasn't until the last few weeks before E3 that they received a working controller.
Of course you cannot be blamed for not knowing this if you only read Slashdot, which until recently has introduced only the most negative takes possible on the PS3 for whatever reason (Microsoft payola being the leading bet among the conspiracy minded). -
Re:Contradicting themselves?
With horror games like Sadness, action and swordplay games like Redsteel, and who's know what else to come, I don't know how long the Wii will keep the 'kids-only' stigma attached with Nintendo systems. I've been disappointed with Nintendo's offering in the past, once old enough to desire something a little more intense than Pokemon adventures, but with the Wii's expanded capabilities I'm hoping that it will attract attention from all sorts of game designers.

Re:So the onyl thing that will stop Nintendo now..
Shadow of the Colossus - Note the jagged edges and overall muddy appearance.
God of War - Same.
Resident Evil 4 - Getting better but still muddy, some jaggies.
Halo 2 - Same as RE4, some jaggies.
Oversized(remember, 480p, up to 16:9) Red Steel shot 1 and shot 2 - Crisp, no jaggies, decent lighting, texture detail is good. -

Re:Looks pretty good
Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy PS3, Possession, Killzone PS3, Tekken PS3, Warhawk, Gran Turismo Vision. Those are all launch titles as well.
Emphasis mine.
MGS4: TBA 2007
FF 13: Unknown Hell, FF 12 for PS2 is only coming out on Halloween this year.
Possession: 2007
Killzone: TBA 2007
Tekken: TBA, not playable at E3 so I'm betting early 2007 at the earliest.
Warhawk: You finally get one right.
GTV: Q2 2007
But hey, at least it only costs $600 for a Blu-Ray player, because you're certainly not going to be playing any games on it in the near future.
