The problem is that the actual cost of providing unlimited X Mbps access is significantly more than you're likely to want to pay. Traditionally (American) ISPs have taken advantage of the fact that only a certain percentage of users are downloading/uploading at a time to provide faster speeds at lower costs. This is (presumably) becoming infeasible without data caps due to the way the traffic is changing.

Here in New Zealand broadband access has always had data caps. However, paying extra for excess data was understandably unpopular, so nowadays ISPs typically offer schemes in which you pay no extra but your bandwidth gets cut to modem speed once you hit the data cap.

For a while some ISPs were offering unlimited data with a "fair use" policy but this seems to have disappeared. I suspect it proved unworkable. (IHUG still have a scheme which uses the words "fair use" but this now has explicit data caps so isn't really the same thing.)

No, abortion is a simple question of science and public health. Abortions are due to (a) a lack of reliable, scientific, high-school sexual education (or even a lack of education in general) including an ethical outlook on procreation and gender relationships, and: (b) a lack of available medical products, such as the pill, condoms, RU-486 (etc) to the general public. Uninformed, sexually active adults and teen-agers then become pregnant, and are unable to terminate the pregnancy before egg implantation, due to the fact that RU-486 is extremely hard to obtain in most of the States.

Check the stats: most countries where sexual education are a part of a normal school curriculum (Scandinavia, Germany, etc) have a much lower rate of abortion than the USA. Therefore, basic biological science is a way to avoid unwanted pregnancies and abortions. Considering that an unwanted pregnancy can seriously mess your life up -- especially for teen-agers -- I consider abortion the least bad solution anyway. Feel free to disagree with me on that (and I am sure you will).

Many of us who voted for him realized we were getting some good things (Justice nominations, etc.) and accepted that being at the cost of known bad things (leaning toward corporate interests), and never realized how bad a deal we were getting (settlement with Microsoft, ignoring global warming research, lying about and invading Iraq, caving to terrorists by trading away our liberties and refusal to torture, etc.)

Considering the fact that George W. Bush already had strong psychopathic tendencies long before the 2000 election, as well as a history of alcohol abuse (and, possibily, drug abuse), I consider your argument to be extremely weak. And that's putting it politely.

The fact is, when it comes to your country, you should always, always, always make an informed decision. Regardless of your religious affiliation. Voting for someone with a history of, shall we say, substance abuse, disregard for human life and violent behaviour is not exactly what I'd call an informed decision. No matter what you believe.

There's nothing anti-science about intelligent design. Intelligent design is just saying, "Hey, the universe seems pretty well ordered. What are the chances of that?" It's a metaphysical inquiry that's informed by science. There's no problem with teaching that (or don't you want students to question assumptions, such as reductionistic Darwinism (aka Epicurianism)?) You're probably upset with the teaching of a 6,000 year old earth based on the book of Genesis. I agree that that's a hard one to reconcile with carbon dating, etc., but that's truly a step beyond intelligent design.

I came into this IT world on the coat-tails of Carl Friden and his 1151 macro arithmetic printer which I programmed and sold to the Bank of New Zealand for mortgage tables. I've been working on this problem for a long time now and the last thing I want to do is to edit individual songs. The best solution I've come up with is to create a folder called "genre" under which I created individual genre folders. I then moved my artists and loose mp3s into those folders. The freeware I used to inspect the artists/paths in my collection is called "Mp3 Explorer". I should point out that I am only interested in the 148 genres of the ID3v1 tag because my BPM based player software uses this to select drum sets and grooves. Of those genres the major headache is the Blues (0), Other (12), Unknown (255 - hex(FF)), and Classical (32 - i.e. ASCII space). During the last year my Winamp front-end has been speaking the track details before and after the song plays to aid me in cleaning up my folders. I've also been using Allmusic.com to check up on artists and my collection is pretty stable now. I am now ready to code a routine to reset these main problem genres to their folder name. When that task is done I'll be able to use a tagger to work through individual folders, looking for anomalies. The freeware Winamp front-end that I wrote, called Ingrid, is a quantum computer emulator that is capable of detecting vary diverse musical signatures. Jests aside, those Mylar "space blankets" really do work. A few years ago a friend and I were climbing Ben Nevis in December in a [failed] attempt at some winter mountaineering. To make a long story short, our shitty mountaineering-club tent leaked through the top and bottom and we spent a very long (13-hour) night laying awake in 2 inches of water on the side of the mountain.

Putting one of those Mylar blankets inside of my sleeping bag was the difference between shifting about uncomfortably all night and hypothermia.

No problem w.r.t. to jumping on you - sometimes, the RKBA movement is it's own worst enemy because of the hostility of many of its members; Libertarians & Objectivists often suffer from the same knee-jerk hostility. It serves no purpose other than to alienate open-minded people & strengthen the resolve of the close-minded.

Those are three major ISPs around here but all of them hover at about the same price. Personally, I'm with Xtra for historic reasons but that will be changing. Oh, also, these are only ADSL links. Cable is available over here as well (like the first poster stated) but it's even more limited than ADSL rollouts here (yeah, I'm jealous it isn't available in my area yet). Moving and making a living in a South Pacific isalnd has its perks, but one of them isn't choice in the communications arena, broadband or not. I almost look back fondly at the Baby Bells and growing up in West Virginia, then the shock treatment kicks in and I'm all better. :) j/k

There is cetainly a lot of usefull content out there; I've read entire novels (such as The Human Memoirs) on them. However, there's little point in putting up websites which just detail ones personal information.

The one author I keep returning to is Stephen Donaldson. I have read the whole Gap Series 5 times now, and it remains interesting. There is nothing like the raw power, emotion, violence and vile politics that Donaldson portrays in the Gap series. Every page you think that the characters cannot endure more - cannot go further. The final book, "This Day All God Die", is one massive crescendo - a fitting finale for a space series of serious proportions.

I'm a New Zealander, and the Maori (your spelling is fine) were about as warlike as they come pre-European arrival. They didn't have their butts kicked too seriously by the Europeans (and did some some seriously butt kicking themselves in places like Gate Pa (link).

Um, where the hell are you getting your disks? My sister and her friends do this exact thing and get a 50 pack of CDRs for ~10 bucks and the CD for like 10-12 bucks. Shop around. White noise generator and KFJC are the only things I listen to and neither one requires the purchase of anything. I gave up on music for the sake of music and have instead begun using music for the sake of noise.

Anybody want to set up a website along the lines of Mr. Cranky , but rating politicians instead? Or a place to read legislation converted into 'everyday language' - can't be harder than explaining computer code in everyday language. Politics is o so very dry. Somebody should do something about that.

I love code. I love the law. I love them both for the same reason: logic and intricacy. What the law lacks in consistency, it makes up in rock-hard 'sneak up behind you with a 2x4' relevance. Both are dry, but if anything code is drier, in the sense of being 'impersonal'

You can't *truly* translate law into common language for the same reason that the only true description of a program is the program itself: namely, any layman's description is likely to gloss over precisely the elements of phraseology or punctuation that will turn out to be most ambiguous (and hence critical) later. Most laymen could do as little with such a lay explanation as they could with an explanation of Perl or APL code. Debugging is a skilled art in law or software.

That doesn't mean that I don't advocate study. i most certainly do. I wish more people were taught a bit more about the law in their (roughly) 12 years of state-mandated education. If ignorance of the law is no excuse [unless you're a NZ judge] [R.S., c.C-34, s.19 in Canadian law] [Code of Hammurabi ;->) [random cool article on the general subject] [Google search] then shouldn't the state take a bit better care to assure we aren't ignorant?

Yes, they *were* true of gcc/g++ (They are really the same compiler) with gcc 2.*8*x, but 2.95.2 is one of the most standards-conforming compilers in existance, as shown by this page comparing various compilers. Note that gcc 2.95.x is the same as egcs. Oh, btw, namespaces work fine in gcc/egcs. The STL, which is actually SGI's, is almost as good as VC++'s, and can be replaced by future versions of SGI's library. The std:: namespace is, by default, ignored, but it can be turned on with the -fhonor-std option. Unfortunately, this somewhat breaks its own iostream headers. Luckily, SGI has an experimental iostream library one can download as well. This is the only area where g++ lacks compared to VC++, but it's sufficiently close as to be useable by the vast majority of programs that rely upon the STL. Oh, do I love SGI. In gcc 2.95.2, I have found no bugs relating to templates (or, heck, at all). Even partial specialization works! Oh, btw, I develop on Win32. I still prefer bash/Unix command-line tools from cygwin/mingw32 gcc 2.95.2, and makefiles to VC++. Now, KDevelop for Win32 would be nice. Btw... What are Koenig lookups?

It mentions projects such as gAlan, a project to create an application for electronic music generation, FreeBirth, an attempt at a ReBirth clone, SoundTracker, Brahms, a MIDI sequencer, and aRts, a analog synthesizer application.

IHUG, an ISP in Australia/New Zealand which offers a 400kbps satellite option, has a page with (old) linux drivers for a card that is no longer available. I know this may not help the guy who asked the original question, but it goes to show that some Linux support for such internet connections does exist.

Pop over to http://www.foresight.org and check out Robert Freitas' work on nanomedicine in the "what's new". Having processing power like that in a watch will be childs play. You could have them replacing your red blood cells, and still doing better at oxygen and CO2 transport than the original blood by an order of magnitude. I have artwork on my high-bandwidth homepage of nanotech bloodcells at work.
