Re:what?
The Taliban have a long history of working with Primates. As early as 2001 they were well documented as working with one Johnny Chimpo (aka Johannes Chimpo) who would run around with his butler doing naughty things. Luckily for them his butler was there to persuade him to not let the great Satan tempt him with western culture and that he must remain true to his Taliban warlords. You can find out more about this and the Taliban's Primate related connection with the American drug trade from the documentary described here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0247745/

Movie - North Face (2008) aka Nordwand (German)
I'm reading this article and this sounds a lot like the mountain climbing movie the North Face (2008) aka Nordwand (German) that I would highly recommend watching because the real-life story of the climbers parallels the events in this article.
This whole extreme climbing thing is very dangerous whether it is going up mountains or going down caves because any little incident and not even an accident usually turns out fatal later on, even when it is something out of your control such as unexpected critical equipment failure.

Wagner was a 19th-century composer, not 18th.
But when I (male) search for Wagner I'm more interested in Jill than Josef or Richard.

Re:Short answer
If you sell your film as pure entertainment then it will be pirated. Art is valuable for itself, that's why real masterpieces cost so much and replicas don't. Unfortunately in the USA (AFAIK) films are not widely thought of as a form of art. Actors are treated like artists; but not directors, designers, screenwriters, 3d modellers, or camera specialists. In the wikipedia article for Film Crew they mention the word "artist" for actors, hairdressers and musicians; and nobody else.
That's what happens in my country: I live in Argentina where piracy is almost "normal", but people still buy good films. TBH, some films are less "artistical" than others (overly heroic, commonplace, explosion-rich, world saving, impossible rambo-like heroes); and obviously you can't compare The Da Vinci Code with The Name of the Rose; but last year the most sold film was the one that ended up winning the Oscar. And the most seen one was another Hollywood ultrahero. -
Idiocracy
I watched the movie Idiocracy last night and got a sense of our culture's non-creative future, 500-some odd years removed.
In one scene the time clock spins forward over centuries, pausing intermittently only to capture a single image of a restaurant storefront in evolution: "FuddRuckers" devolves to "RuddPuckers", "PudSuckers", etc. (or some such). When the clock stops the culture has christened the restaurant "ButtFuckers".
Apparently the references to FuddRuckers, Costco, Starbucks et al caused Fox to bury the film, which portrays a future where creativity and intelligence have largely disappeared.

Re:Very American (European?) viewpoint
when was the last time a Vietnamese film reached global distribution let alone worldwide success?
Based on the list on IMDb, the top entry I can remember having read a fair bit about is The Scent of Green Papaya, which would be 1993. It seems though that most Asian cinema is more action-oriented, and such more contemplative pieces a relative rarity.

Re:If the quality is good enough-but what if it is
No, that was the time when Coca-Cola deliberately created 100 million cans of faulty Coke. Heh. Actually I've never tried the "new coke"
Also, do not diss David Puttnam, check his IMDB profile. He has quite consistently produced quality, high-class movies, such as The Duellists, Chariots of Fire, Midnight Express, Local Hero, The Killing Fields, and The Mission.

Sione's Wedding, and creative accounting?
Sione's Wedding http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0464184/ which is a New Zealand made film, was claimed to have been heavily hurt by piracy (people were distributing this via burnt DVD's as well as torrents before release... (another indication that people in the movie industry are the source of such releases, imo).
according to wikipedia, "This movie is also well known for a high profile court case over breach of copyright law. An employee of a post production company was found guilty and sentenced to 300 hours community service.[1] Movie producer John Barnett estimates the movie lost $500,000 in lost box office takings and DVD sales."
however, this ignores 2 things... first, the movie was pretty bad... everyone ive talked to who have stated they have watched it said theyd not watch it again... secondly, hollywood accounting http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20100708/02510310122.shtml as shown here on slashdot, hollywood tends to use creative accounting to show paper losses for movies such as the last Harry Potter movie, which can take nearly $1b USD in revenue... how can we believe much if any of what they say? -

Kevin Peter Hall, the original actor in the Predator suit in Predator 1 and Predator 2 died that way, AIDS via incompetent blood transfusion after a car crash. He was in Misfits of Science too. Such a loss
:(More importantly, Isaac Asimov died that way as well -- and the doctors cajoled his family into hushing it up for decade (until the doctors were dead as well).

1 Stay away from the nuclear waste dump.
2 Don't shoot energy-absorbing being with a laser - just get them in a powered-down section and wait for them to run out of energy.

Re:compromise idea to prevent regional isolation
Circular reasoning. One could just as easily say that TLDs should be allowed to be non-ASCII as well (and who says they won't be?), which resolves the current dependencies on English. But that wouldn't make you happy because you use English and you want everyone else to use it too. Only for the domain or email address, you say... but those just happen to be the most important parts, right?
Your postal system example is just further evidence of systemic bias. Yes, you can send mail in Japan using addresses written in English. Can you send mail in the US using katakana? The point is that DNS is equally important to nearly every country that uses it. Forcing everyone to use a de facto trade language is not good enough. Why isn't it good enough? Because people and businesses end up with transliterations like this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0852721/ and they may not even realize that their product, business, or name is being filtered because they're not native English speakers, trade language or no.
The correct solution if you want to get in contact with a foreign domain? Use a translator.

8th Wonderland
I saw the movie 8th Wonderland a while ago in a special screening.
It is an interesting take on the concept of a virtual "nation without territory".
"The 8th's" first public act is an underground effort to bolt condom dispensers to
every church in Rome overnight.
This reminds me a bit of that. -
Re:A Serious Concern
Is having the country run by Christians or oil magnates really any more sensible than pirates?
Yes. And, as usual, South Park puts it best:
Super Adventure Club Head Explorer: [Our founder, Phinehas] discovered that children have things called marlocks in their bodies. And when an adult has sex with a child, the marlocks implode, feeding the adult receptive cavity with energy that causes immortality, so saith the ruler of Bethos. Phinehas traveled the world, loving many, many children, and he lived for eternity. Until he was hit by a train in 1892.
Kyle: Do you realize how retarded that sounds?
Super Adventure Club Head Explorer: Is it any more retarded than the idea of God sending his son to die for our sins? Is it any more retarded than Buddha sitting beneath a tree for twenty years?
Stan: Yeah. It's way, way more retarded. -
This reminded me of...

Re:Why so discriminating?
To answer your question you must look at the law in question and go back to its origins and the culture at that time. The law in question gives a tax break to a MAN who is MARRIED because he is supporting TWO people on ONE income. At least that's why the law was enacted. Obviously society doesn't resemble anything like that these days. In most relationships today both individuals are employed. Despite this fact the law remains because it would be political suicide to even suggest the law be abolished. So what to do? Let's lobby to expand the unnecessary law to include more groups thus nullifying the law while keeping it in tact. We'll just raise another tax somewhere less "sensitive" and nobody will be the wiser. Why don't we lobby for removing the current tax credit instead of adding more complexity leading to more real world Chuck & Larry scenarios? I say that as a married man who enjoys the tax credit. I doubt that would gain traction because the group lobbying to be added to the tax credit use it as a political tool of their own to force Americans to accept their lifestyle.

Re:You Americans don't need to fear "terrorists".
It's the corporations that are most harmful to your freedom.
If you want to learn something about corporations, and why you should fear them, then watch "The Corporation". It's a movie-documentary... and at least when I last watched it, it said it was a free download... so the fact that the 7 websites were taken down at least shouldn't affect your education
:-)Since the late 18th century American legal decision that the business corporation organizational model is legally a person, it has become a dominant economic, political and social force around the globe. This film takes an in-depth psychological examination of the organization model through various case studies. What the study illustrates is that in the its behaviour, this type of "person" typically acts like a dangerously destructive psychopath without conscience.
source: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379225/plotsummary
I agree this was a terrific movie and even my wife who seems to side with corporations most of the time realized that many of them act only in the interest of themselves without a care for anyone else including those they hurt (physically or financially).
This is especially true with the current BP leak that is destroying the lives of those living on the gluf coast. -
