For example, good movies make you care about the characters, and care when they get injured or die.

For the "good guys" perhaps. How many of the dudes who got their brains clawed out in Logan did you care about? Or the guys who died in Mad Max: Fury Road? Does anyone remember the movie "Brainstorm" (1983)? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt00... It was about a direct way to record and replay experiences to and from the brain with sensory input and everything else as a real memory. There was a scene where the executive is replaying a scene of a romp with two hookers. it was clear the dopamine (or whatever) addled high had completely broken him. As a 16 year old with a mattress full of Playboys, my first thought was "That's scary, not really sure I want that." I am not particularly perceptive, but it scared me a little...

I would like to see one shred of evidence that having so-called backdoors would have prevented the London tragedy.

Maybe if some wacko Eagle Eye supercomputer were monitoring and evaluating all communications at all times in real-time, maybe something could be sniffed out, and on that day we shall all bow down to our robot overlords. Until then, you're talking about creating a mile-high haystack of data, and hiring humans to eaves-drop and search through it day and night for a needle. I mean, politicians really need to think before they speak. Already, London has more cameras than nearly anywhere else on Earth. The problem? If you're intent is to prevent crime, you need eyes watching all those cameras all the time. And there's nothing more boring than looking at security cameras all day.

For catching and prosecuting a guy who's committed a crime, maybe. Go back through the tape, catch him in the act, conviction, sentencing. Done. But for preventing the crime in the first place, particularly where the perp is not planning on walking out alive, backdoors and security cameras don't justify the legions of personnel it takes to watch and listen to everything just in case someone might pick up the perp maybe saying they're gonna do something. And who's to say it's real, or just some dumbass talking shit after drinking too much? An overworked, underpaid government-contracted data grunt, that's who... he's the reason the storm-troopers in riot gear tore your house down, zip-tied your family and shot your goldfish, only to find your 10-year-old pulling pranks on his iPad.

I'm sure the studios still have a lot of ground to cover. I anxiously look forward to "solitaire, the movie" in the next year or two.

Hollywood has made more money from abroad than in the US for a while now. It's now to the point that they are making movies primarily for foreign consumption and merely showing them here.

That is also why a lot of movies are full of explosions, and don't have much confusing plot (woohoo transformers!), because that is easy to translate into any language and culture. Seriously, check out these numbers.

Actually, I think people believing a sci-fi movie to be true probably has less impact on the real world than those who believe historical movies to be completely true. It has often been said that history is written the victors, and that may have been true once, but nowadays the history that many know and believe was actually written by Hollywood scriptwriters.

Not when that Sci-Fi movie includes fictitious science. In the UK I had a conversation about the idea that humans only use 10% of their brain, and upon saying that the idea was basically bullshit and provably so from an evolutionary perspective, I was asked if I had watched Lucy, the Scarlett Johanssen film based upon the premise and that I might find it interesting.

Maybe this will cheer you up and lighten the association.

The highway system in the United States is rather unusual. Most countries would design a system to maximize the utility. Lots of high density living near high density employment plus walking, cycling and mass transit. Then minimizing problems like traffic jams by using turnabouts and parallel paths. Instead, the United States highway system was built for the military instead. It was created by the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, popularly known as the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act (Public Law 84-627).

Originally this system got raw material from one side of the country to another to manufacture planes, guns, ammo and ships. It was also envisioned as a great lever on the economy. But the immediate social cost of this high-speed bypass was destroying little towns that grew up on existing roads like Highway 66, a road that already crossed the entire country.

But the system was funded at a time when Nuclear War was the next big thing just around the corner. One intention or clear effect is spreading living out into the new suburbs and exurbs to reduce the impact of a nuclear strike on the core of a city. In fact the roads around every major city aren't designed to avoid traffic jams but instead to ensure:

the importance of the Interstate System to evacuation of cities in time of national emergency.

This was the time when everyone was told on the brand new TVs that success means 'a steady job, a home out of town, a car, two kids and husband+wife.' That is when they weren't practicing duck and cover.

Where these yahoos intended to put these people fleeting the burning inner cities during war? The imaginary copious amounts of farmland that planners though should be able to support them. Yes, this was during a time when farming was already well on it's way to consolidating into agribusiness.

No, people didn't decide that suddenly the suburbs were the peak of civilization (even if we parody that in the movies.) The citizens of the United States bought a big pile of propaganda. The sad fact is that the people who wrote that propaganda actually believed it was to help them.

The problem can only be solved by reducing the need for people to commute. There are a lot of ways to do this:

Google and other Stack-ranking "Internet Native" companies design their HR system to terminate remote workers or flex workers as fast as they can hire them. Sixty years of white flight, black flight, Mexican-ization, gentrification, urban blights, drug wars, gang wars, the real estate collapse and protectionist nimby laws the problems haven't been solved by staying at home. I've seen this movie about giant crystals threatening the world. It was actually pretty good, so I'm off to make some popcorn and wait for those things to burst out of the ground.

It appears Hollywood may have also essentially done a remake set on the ISS in "Life" due out next month, complete with a 155 second Youtube trailer that seems to pretty much give the entire plot away. As if that's not bad enough, it's entirely possible there may also be some kind of message about the current political situation regarding illegal aliens in there too just for good measure, but at least it looks pretty...
