Re:Abuse of the system
Hmm, never saw the "justiz" reading of my name. I had always thought of JustZisGuy, as in I'm "just zis guy, ya know?", from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I'm certainly not a lawyer nor do I have any formal legal training (I am a computer engineer, however).

Why do we still use punctuation in sentences?
Lets break it down even further. Why do we still use punctuation in sentences. Really, on the internet there is no need for someone to stop and breath while reading a sentence. Unless there very weird and read aloud to themselves. Of course, some idiots posting do actually just write entire paragraphs without any punctuation... educated people immediately disregard thier posts. The concept of levels, missions, chapters, objectives, sentences and paragraphs are all part of basic syntax. Its parsable information. If you've ever watched the classic Alfred Hitchcock film "Rope" ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040746/ )It essentially filmed without any camera cuts. They only stopped filming to change film 10 times due to the ammount of film a camera could have. Even still though, it has very distinct acts etc.
-
Re:Why do movies still have cuts?
Hitchcock's Rope appears to be one single long continuous shot. There actually are a couple cuts, which you can spot if you look for them. They are carefully hidden by clever camera movements. But, to the audience, it appears as a single shot with one scene.
In fact, this movie is based on a play that isn't broken into scenes either. (Maybe it is a metaphor for the name "Rope"?)
Anyway, one continuous scene like that can be exhausting to watch. I am glad that this isn't common.

How do you live with yourselves?
I am curious if you ever had any qualms about making a career out of attacking other peoples' hard work.
While some films featured on your show were shoddy and amateurish, many just lacked a mainstream presentation. When one sets aside the markers we are conditioned to expect in a "good" film (slick sets, smooth acting, professionalism instead of enthusiasm or originality), there is alot to be gained by watching and understanding the films you have slighted. At the very least these film-makers had a sensiblity and a point-of-view not available in mainstream, Hollywood productions (I thinking particularly of the films of Ted V. Mikels -- who I believe was one of your foremost punching bags). To make them the target of mockery was really an exercise in conformism -- something I thought the geek/scientic community was supposed to be against.
One has only to read through the comments left at the Internet Movie Database on films featured on your show, to see page after page of the kind of derision towards the work of these men and women you have inspired (example: Girl with the Gold Boots by Mikels). Do you think that this kind of mob mentality is the permanent legacy of your show?

Joe Don Baker (Mitchell), I BelieveHas any actor/writer/director been legitimately peeved by your often acrid, yet so very accurate commentary? The final episode that Joel did was for the movie Mitchell, starring Joe Don Baker. Now, you may actually have seen him in movies today including Goldeneye, Congo, or The Dukes of Hazzard. This actor reportedly threatened to physically harm the MST3K staff if he ever saw them. One of the voices said that he was sure JDB was just joking but I'm not so sure.
Also, there have been some new introductions to the DVDs licensed by Rhino and I've watched them all. At the beginning, they often talk with or about trying to contact the actors/directors of the films. Oftentimes, it's kind of sad when they show the actors or actresses as they really poured their heart into the movie. For Time Chasers, Mike opens up saying that they invited the original cast to see the movie together with them. I guess they thought it was going to be more friendly ... than it was. There were many low blows at acting quality, how people looked, how they talked, the music for the movie, the region it was filmed in, the list goes on. It put the whole movie in a new context when I rewatched it. Still, hilarious MST3K, I highly advise seeing it.
That said, I have spent considerable amount of time and resources researching Manos and although this is off-topic from your question, I must point out that it was written, directed, produced and starred in by the same man. Hal P. Warren, a fertilizer salesman from El Paso Texas. You can find considerable material on that movie including that the camera had no sound function and couldn't hold more than 60 seconds worth of film which resulted in many cuts and bad editing and three people doing the voices. The film crew was not allowed to do anything artsy and soon dubbed the production "Mangos: Cans of Fruit." The unfortunate story of Torgo is that he was supposed to look like a Satyr but instead put the metal leg inserts in backwards (supposed to make his legs look like that of a goat's) and, as a result, had hilariously large knees. This caused him great pain and, whether he was addicted to pain killers or shamed from the movie I can't say, but he committed suicide shortly there after. Rest in peace, Torgo. After I found out about that, I did feel a touch bad for him, considering his short life. -

Cheap Seats
Did you ever watch Cheap Seats (kind of like MST3k but featuring sports) when it was on ESPN Classic? I'm a huge fan of it and whenever I watched it I thought of 3k and how much it probably inspired the writers of Cheap Seats. It wasn't really a show for the typical Slashdot reader but the Sklar brothers are mighty hilarious in my book.

Re:Simple (sort of) solution:
...the amount of interest you're going to make [from my advice] in that amount of time is minimal
And what you stand to lose if you go over-limit is large. So, by all means make a "mid-month" payment if you just bought something unusually large to avoid going over-limit.
Credit cards are a stacked deck in favor of the crooked credit card companies. Avoid, at all costs, going over-limit or being late in your (minimum) payment. Maxed Out should be required viewing. -

Re:That's the whole reason why there is a problem
To quote Tom Arnold as "Gib" from True Lies
"You aren't her parents anymore, her parents are Axl Rose and Madonna, you can't compete with that kind of bombardment."
Or in other words, the modern media has you effectively neutralized as a parent unless you are going to raise your kid in a very strict household with no television, no Internet, and no pop culture media of any kind and even if you did that they would probably rebel as teenagers anyway. Yes, parents are responsible but they have to be realistic about what they are up against in the modern world when it comes to influencing their kids. Some minimal level of assistance in helping them make informed choices, like the rating system, is reasonable and appropriate. -

Two words: SHANNON TWEED. 'Nuff said.
I would hesitate to look at Gene Simmons for any kind of intelligent statement on anything.
Okay, admittedly, Shannon Tweed is only his "common law" wife, but she was the queen of the B-movies, back in the 1990's.
Her magnum opus, A Woman Scorned, is one of the epic B-movies of our era.

Re:Not really an issueWell, I think you've summed it up right there actually.
Hehe, well yeah, but my sig isn't (to me anyway) anything more then homage to one of my favorite movies.
The only part of the whole deal that bothers me slightly is the US government having veto power over ICANNThe US Government chartered it. The veto power is a legacy of that. I would like at least one semi-trustworthy government (as much as you can use the word 'trustworthy' next to 'government') to have veto power over ICANN (or whatever replaces it), simply because I don't see any other way to ensure that end-users on the internet have a voice. Short of some sort of extra-governmental international agency whose board would be elected by the citizens of the world (hardly a realistic suggestion), I don't see how you ensure that otherwise.
IF there has to be a governing body involved as some sort of checks and balances type arrangement then one which is likely to represent everyone's interests rather than one which may have some bias would be preferable.I would like to assume that the basic interests of American citizens (freedom of speech and expression being chief among them) align with the basic interests of everybody else in the World. If you abandon US Veto power over ICANN, what do you purpose as a replacement? You can't do it internationally without including nations whose interests don't exactly align with freedom of speech and expression. Wouldn't you agree that's one of the most important things about the internet?
I would like to thank you for the constructive argument that didn't boil down to "USA sux0r". Maybe we can salvage some productive debate out of this yet

Re:Scraping the bottom of the barrel.
The movie came out in 1984. It's the end of 2007 now. Are they hurting that badly for material?
The Warriors came out in 1979 and the game in 2005 yet is one of the best film tie-ins I've ever seen, expanding the story and letting you play through the movie.
An interesting addendum to this. The movie The Warriors was based on a book written by Sol Yurick in 1965. Who himself based it on a book that is required reading for classical Greek students and West Point Cadets called the Anabasis by the Greek writer and soldier Xenophon that details his rise to leadership within a small mercenary army that got stuck deep in Persian territory and had to fight their way back home--Although I'm pretty sure he stole the idea from Herodotus.

Re:Scraping the bottom of the barrel.
The Warriors videogame wasn't even written by the same people and it's a great game!
One of them was involved in both projects - Sol Yurick., in fact he wrote the novel. Plus many of the original actors did the voices used in the game which really added to the atmosphere.

I guess a good game is a good game, maybe when they aren't being rushed out to coincide with the movie's release, not to mention having a cult following.
