Truly, Madly, Deeply
The first part he played that comes to my mind, even before any of his HP performances, is Juliet Stevenson's not-so-dead cello-playing husband in this movie.

I think you meant http://www.imdb.com/title/tt02...
That imdb link is to a 5 minute short.

Re:FFmpegd
Heh.
That gives me an idea, though. What about a setting that plays back movies in Momento style? Maybe some kind of heuristic to determine where scenes start and end?

Life is indeed imitating art, i'm just waiting for that first hit season of "OW, MY BALLS!" to start anytime.

Re:Good luck ...
Medical technology is growing FAR faster than either medical ethics, or the laws surrounding what can be done with this information.
No, the technology is growing faster than your awareness of the changes to medical ethics and law. For instance, it's quite apparent that you're unaware of the 2008 Genetic Information Nondiscrimation Act, which specifically prohibits exactly the sort of behavior you're talking about. It's been the case for nearly a decade that insurers are prevented from denying coverage on the basis of a disorder that has been detected via genetic testing but that has not yet presented any symptoms.
And medical practitioners and lawmakers (not to mention the general public; see: Gattaca) have been considering the ethics surrounding these questions for decades. We, as a society, are still sorting through all of the ramifications, of course, but suggesting that the laws and ethics are behind the tech seems wrong to me. If anything, I'd suggest that the ethics and laws have been ahead of the tech when it comes to most of these questions, with a clear path marked for what's considered acceptable by the time the tech is ready for widespread use.

An interesting movies based on him
Based on Bowie and the entire Glam rock scene of the early 70's .

Played as Nikola Tesla
Gosh. On
/. I would have figured that some people would have chimed in that he played Nikola Tesla in the film "The Prestige." Bonus: his lab assistant was played by Andy Serkis, in one of his few live-action roles. -

Re:Not surpsing
Heck, it appeared in the movie Hackers which came out in 1995!

It was already something easily recognizable at that time.

Re:Those who would give up essential Liberty...
but why are you quoting history in the first place if you don't know what the fuck you're talking about?
If you thought he was "quoting history" then it's you who doesn't know what they are talking about.
Men in black quote. It may have been more obvious if he didn't cut out the: "and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet."

Not a big movie fan I take it. Read the first quote:

Re:God I hate to say this, but
For a counterexample, go back to TNG's 1st season episode "Conspiracy"
Locating. S01E25 identified. Ah, Pacifica! Damn, it, Geordi, it doesn't help me if I just hear the punchline! Now I want to know the rest... of the joke? (Please tell me it doesn't involve T'Pol tripping on trellium-D again.) Oh, this was way back on that stardate, before Riker got sexy (protip, boys, the facial hair does make a difference!) and Troy was still into him for some unfathomable reason. Nice 2001 reference with voice print identification.
Hold on, it's the main theme, which completely destroys all other themes from the Brannon Braga era!
Computer, hold frame. No, that's not the one. Advance 2.3 seconds. Eh, I guess I'll just need to watch the whole episode.
at the beginning of the show, Picard meets up with some other Starfleet captains who he calls "Starfleet's finest". One of them was a black woman. I don't know who the actress was now
Ah, her! Why isn't she in the credits?! Captain Tryla Scott. Computer, cross-reference that with IMDB.
The actress we're looking for is one Ursaline Bryant.

Abrams is a spectacle guy. Not a story guy! This first Disney Star Wars film was never about story. As you say
... What the first SW film after the George Lucas travesty known as episodes I - !!I needed to be was a spectacle that clearly established, for the fans, that Disney could recapture the look and feel, mood and tone, however you want to describe it, of the original trilogy. They have unequivocally done that!Let's face it
... nobody would pick Abrams to tell a story. Abrams is a spectacle guy. Not a story guy!I anticipate few story elements will be "borrowed" from the original trilogy for any of the episodes to come. Don't expect redemption of the villain, for example.. Do expect that the sets will be reused
... they are an integral and essential part of the mood and tone of the franchise ...The guy tagged to write and direct episode VIII( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt25... [imdb.com] ), Rian Johnson (Looper), is NOT a spectacle guy he is definitely a "story" guy and while he's no Irwin Kershner, I have considerable hope that episode VIII will be as much better than VII as V was better than IV.
I know that is dangerous, shattered hope kills

JJ Abrams is not a "story" guyAll the criticisms about overuse of story elements and connections to/ inclusion of, past characters/sets is certainly valid; one or the other would have probably been sufficient to tie the generations together.

Send Carl Spackler To Mars
Carl Spackler: "This is a hybrid. This is a cross, ah, of Bluegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensemilia. The amazing stuff about this is, that you can play 36 holes on it in the afternoon, take it home and just get stoned to the bejeezus-belt that night on this stuff."

Re:John Carter failed on epically bad marketing
think of how Rambo: First Blood was able to get us to care about a new character for example.
Which was only called First Blood. There is no mention of "Rambo" on the movie poster or in any tagline (that I know of).
The first sequal was "Rambo: First Blood Part II" then they dropped all that shit for "Rambo III". It wasn't until 2008 that they even realized their mistake and the state of California made them go back and make Rambo.
But your point still stands. "Rambo" is practically a word in the dictionary if it isn't already. They told us what the first movie was about, "First Blood" - who killed first, and then later everybody cared more about the character.

Re:Absolute bullshit
You can't prove that they would have paid to see the movie, but if they've downloaded a copy of it from the internet, it's hard to argue that the person had no interest in seeing it at all.
Also if you look at the worldwide gross, it took in about $200 million, so it's probably one of those movies that's popular overseas more than it is in the U.S. Add in eventual television rights or video sales and it probably made a tidy sum of money for the studio. -
Re:Absolute bullshit
Yeah, methinks the studio knew it would be a turd and released it so they could try to make money by suing people.
I mean, it's Expendables 3 for crying out loud
... who the hell even knew there was a 3?According to IMDB, it cost $90 mil to make and grossed $38 mil which means nobody gave a damn. Which makes it even more shocking that there's apparently going to be a number 4.
You can't sue for damages if you can't prove people would have seen the movie. And I'm not so sure of that.

What are yours?
Anything lampooned by the series Hyperdrive. "An entire alien planet. What a bit of luck that they all speak English". "They've shot the captain, they've shot Officer York, they're stopping to reload and point their crossbows at me, I wonder what they'll do next". Brilliant.

Has Matt Ridley been watching Iron Sky?
What Matt Ridley fails to recognise is that the Nazis are already on the dark side of the Moon and are hoarding all the helium-3 for their impending return to Earth, invasion, and subjugation of the inferior races... Did Matt Ridley watch Iron Sky http://www.imdb.com/title/tt10... and think it was a documentary?

Re:Redundant
"moderate" factions... Yeah right, pull the other one. And please, keep passing the blame.. You wouldn't be you without that.
There's a very good documentary about this called "Return to Homs", which everyone should see: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt31...
It shows how secular protests turn into massacre and then to desperate fight for survival. They received no support from outside world, other than from the islamists (who had plenty of weapons and supplies, likely sponsored by such countries as Bahrain and Saudi Arabia). You can guess the rest.
Watch it and then come here to say that they had a choice. I think that most western young people can easily relate to people shown in the film. They are not that different from us. -
Tried and failed in 2004
There was an attempted remake in 2004 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt07... but the pilot was so terrible it was never picked up. You can find some clips on Youtube but it's painful to watch.

Re:Cui bono?
Quite frankly, I start to get pissed. Ok, folks, from both sides of the fence, please tell me why. Why would the "other side" lie, and lie so vehemently to start something that is nothing short of a religious war by now?
If you really want to know, you should probably read or watch Merchants of Doubt (or do both). The interviews with global warming deniers in the movie are particularly illuminating.
What's in it for you, specifically?
Nothing, really. Mostly, I post corrections when people write things that are ridiculously wrong.

Re:monopolies and utilities
The primary function of government is to an entity that can provide Utilities and grant monopolies.
You must have seen/heard a different version of that Schoolhouse Rock song/episode, The Preamble. Here's what I saw/heard:
We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
I guess your PBS station sucks.
