I remember watching a movie about a guy who is hired to fake a Rembrandt - he's actually so good at it that when he needs to prove he painted it, no one belives him. Anyway, in a part they touch that very issue - if the painting is good, what's the difference that merits it being worth $100,000,000 instead of $1,000? The fact that the painter is more notorious?

    As i see it, the people thay shell those amounts for a painting aren't buying the painting itself, but the social currency - the fact that owning it gives you a certain social staus. That the painting might be beautiful or not can even come second.

Duh, my bad. I picked up this anectdotally, through The Corporation. They devote about 10-15 minutes on Monsanto and their litigious pursuits over their IP protection.

If you haven't heard of it, it's a documentary that analyzes the behavior and nature of today's corporations, quite long at 3 hours (but it's split into 6 pieces as it was originally a doc series for public TV), but a decent rental choice for a Sunday afternoon.

A) It hasn't seemed to hurt small budget films so far. Even The Blair Witch Project and Clerks, which only cost $25,000 and $30,000 to make respectivly seemed to be able to aford getting a rating.

B) You don't have to get a rating. You only really need one if you want to have a fighting chance of getting theater owners to show your movie.

C) Even if you don't get a rating, there are still a number of theaters who may decide to show the film anyway, as seen in the documentary The Aristocrats which declined to get a rating.

Probably PeeWee Herman's best line ever.

And don't forget Shoei Imamura's 'Black Rain'. No, ther is not Andy Garcia.
This was really scary as based in real life stories... I remember it deeply and I watched more than 20 years ago.

It was a great show, managing to address some pretty serious issues while providing lots of "badass" moments. It was a sad day when CBS ended it after only 22 episodes.

Your point is valid and well-taken, but I think the reaction on Slashdot was equally valid and illuminating if only because it shows how many of us think that the student's tale wasn't that far-fetched.

While I was a bit skeptical of the student's story because it sounded too much like the movie Se7en, I thought back to when some government agents came to a library where a friend of mine worked and demanded access to some or all of the customers' reading/check-out histories. Thankfully, in that case, the librarians refused to release the information, but that was back in the early 1980's, before computers were cheap, before the World Wide Web and all the subsequent technology existed. Surely, the technology exists now for the feds to get that information without permission. And in light of the recent admission that the US Goverment authorized spying on US citizens without a warrant, it isn't ridiculous to think that the goverment might also be tapping into people's library records.

But, more to the point, while the student's tale may have turned out to be false, it is entirely valid for people to have spoken up about it, if only as a cautionary tale about what America could be like if we continue to surrender our civil rights without protest (if it's not like that already).

Our right to protest is one of the things that makes America great. This is Freedom of Speech at its best, in my opinion -- We are each other's bulls**t detectors. And that's a Good Thing.

So, thanks for following-up on that story -- I'm glad it turned out to be a hoax -- but I plan to continue to voice my concerns whenever I see something like that pop up. :-)
