The thing about Hollywood is...
'Great' movies do not sell tickets. Example, The Pianist: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0253474/awards, was not the top earner for 2002, http://us.imdb.com/Sections/Years/2002/top-grossi
n g. Instead it was Spiderman. Hollywood is not interested in making 'Great Movies', it is interested in whatever gets a warm body in a paying seat. Looked at another way: Given the largest source of revenue (for any product) is the 'lowest common denominator', I don't think we can expect any form of 'Great Movie' out Major Hollywood anymore. And possibly any major industry, such as games: http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/08/21/ 1529232&tid=187&tid=10 -
Re:Good Investment
And yes the die-hard fans will complain about liberties being taken... But the die-hards are never happy. The superhero genre relies more on the casual fan, those who used to read the books when they were kids, or those who just like superhero movies... And there are a lot more of these people than the die-hards.
The die-hard fans who are complaining have already seen the movie and given their 10 bucks. I'm not dissing the casual market, but I'm guessing all of the Daredevil fans out there that considered the movie "sacrelige" did so after boosting the opening weekend gross quite nicely.
But come on, there's no heart and soul in Marvel's assembly line. A Marvel comic might have a talented artist or writer pass through every now and again, but that's all they're doing-- passing through.
The listed titles are: Captain America, The Avengers, Nick Fury, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Cloak & Dagger, Dr. Strange, Hawkeye, Power Pack and Shang-Chi. There is a lot of entertaining backstory there to pilfer, certainly enough in each one to make a movie (maybe not Hawkeye). None of what is listed is Sin City, but then again a lot of what is listed is on par with Batman or Spider Man. Which is, to say, a great director can never be undervalued. Unless he goes and directs The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D.
The thing I'm worried about with this is that Marvel is flooding their own market. Sure, there is demand for some superhero movies. Sure, great superhero movies will always make money. But the public's tastes are fickle. Make a super hero movie every few years, and you can really spark the public's imagination. Pump out bad superhero movie after bad superhero movie and suddenly everyone is interested in the slasher revival, or really great pulp action movies, or (gasp) well written dialog with deep characters. After 10 movies, won't people want to see something... else? -
Re:Don't get me wrong, but what? Thanks. His name was on the tip of my tounge but I just couldn't remember it. The BayWatch reference was deliberate to connotate how acting poor that movie was. Kitt had more emotional range to work off of than anybody on Nick Fury: Agent of Shield.
1998 was it really so long ago? I thought SciFi was hyping it up just last year.

Re:I wish DC get money and have more control
It's true. I did enjoy Barbarians at the Gate a film that begins "Billions and Billions of dollars ago...".
I guess the thing is that we need to pull out the most extreme stories out there and make them into great films. I think Uncle Sam is one such story - It's not all corporate america bashing. It's actually about the basic truths of democracy forgotten in exchange for a simulacra of patriotism. The way Sam finds himself again is subtle, satisfying and nothing short of inspired. -
Re:Captain America x2.They brought captain america twice already to the screen, same as Punisher.
Actually, three times. Don't forget the 1944 Republic serial Captain America.

Re:Good Investment
Yes, but, comic-turn-movies generally cost $100 million, minimum. Where will they be getting the money for the second five?
They could save money by shooting overseas, but this saves nothing compared to the cost of securing A-list actors. Then again, they could get unknowns to act.
With foreign production + unknown actors, this is starting to look like a Roger Corman operation (a bit hyperbolic- Miramax/Dimension, maybe). I don't think Avi will be willing to compromise that much. Marvel doesn't want to cheap out and end up with the films tanking at the box office because everyone knows they are second-class, to be bought on the $5 DVD bin at Walgreens, particularly given this rather meager literary property. (For a modern example of a $30-$50 million action movie, see "Sky High", "The Punisher", and "Elektra".
I know of what I speak, I worked on Spiderman, Hulk and Fan 4. Avi and the Marvel producers show great attention in production to making good, high-quality films. With they themselves (instead of Uni/Fox/Sony) footing the bill, I can only see that pressure increasing.
Forgive my AC-ness, but my business does not reward people with opinions on it, right or wrong.

Nick Fury??? Oh Noooooooooo!!!
If you haven't seen David Hasselhoff as Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. you haven't lived. This turkey leaves "Plan 9 From Outer Space" in the dust as the "worst film ever made". Next time SciFi Channel runs it, make a point of it. You'll have more fun having a do-it-yourself MST3000 than words can describe.

Beating it to death...
This has happened before. Right after the initial success of Batman
the movie studios thought that super-hero movies were the way to go. The resulting movies were not made well.
They made Captain America once before. As much as I loved the X-Men and Spiderman movies, Fantastic Four was only so-so,
and bringing back Captain America, they should be careful. Hollywood tends to beat genres to death, wait a while and do it
all over again. -

Re:And yet Europe seems to be doing fineYou raise some excellent points...but...
A great example is the swedish movie "Fucking Åmål", in Sweden most people saw it as a movie about being young in a small town, peer pressure and a lot of other "normal" issues
I'm not so sure I agree this is an "great example." While I'm sure it is an excellent movie, calling a heartfelt drama about a young woman coming to terms with her budding sexuality in a small town Fucking Åmål is a bit silly. For me, it doesn't sound offensive but rather scatologically comical. Like someone trying too hard to be controversial or simply using the wrong words in the wrong context. Not unlike that famous scene from This Is Spinal Tap:
<Nigel plays piano>
Marty: It's pretty.
Nigel: Yeah, I like it, just been fooling about with it for a few
months now, very delicate...
Marty: It's a, it's a bit of a departure from the kind of thing
you normally play.
Nigel: Yeah, it's part of a...trilogy really, a musical trilogy
I'm doing... in... D minor, which I always find is really
the saddest of all keys really. I don't know why, but it
makes people weep instantly, you play a..baaaaa...baaaaaa
it's a horn part.
Marty: It's very pretty.
Nigel: ...baaaa, baaaaa, yeah, just simple lines intertwining,
you know very much like, I'm really influenced by Mozart
and Bach, it's sort of in between those, really, it's
like a Mach piece really, it's...
Marty: What do you call this?
Nigel: Well, this piece is called "Lick My Love Pump".
Marty: Hmm. -
Re:Online banking
SSL 2.0 is so old that it should have gone the way of the Dodo bird.
The game was up when a Bond villain, discovering that it's trivial to hack some top secret installation, says contemptuously "*pffft* , they're using SSL - version two." And that was in 1997. -
Re:Gamecube is finally breaking out of its shellI'm afraid I can't support your conclusion - I'm 29, I've played through all of the zeldas except MM, AOS, and AOA, and I thought the graphics in WW were awesome. Between the graphics and the gameplay, the only things it lacked were difficulty and a dungeon for each triforce piece.
Seriously, I can just cruise around in that game and watch the trees, the ocean, the birds... best graphics of any game I've ever played.
I don't dislike realistic graphics (Twilight Princess looks rad), but most games use a realistic style nowadays, so I really enjoy the ones that are different. WW and Viewtiful Joe are the most creative ones that come to mind at the moment. We all know that it's the gameplay that matters, but interesting graphics can really immerse you in a game. I'm pretty excited about cartoon shading techniques - looking at a game like Wind Waker makes me wonder when we're going to get the videogame version of Ninja Scroll...

Re:MOD REVIEW DOWN! TROLL!Let's rephrase your argument:
I personally drank a fifth of vodka then drove home and didn't crash into anything. Therefore anybody who says that drinking and driving can have adverse effects is flamebait/troll.
No? How about:
I personally thought that Gigli was the most masterful screenplay ever written and was personally touched more deeply than any cinematic masterpiece the world has ever known. Anybody who conducts a study on whether or not it was a popular movie is flamebait/troll
You have presented one single, solitary, biased anecdote and stated that your personal results apply equally to everybody across the board with no variations. Do you really not see a problem with this? Anybody who disagrees with you must receive -1? Newsflash: studies and metastudies aren't always going to validate myopia. Smoking causes cancer, but we still find the occasional 6 pack a day smoker who lives well into their 90s. Does this mean that anybody who publishes a study showing links between cancer and tobacco should be modded down? In your world, apparently.
The reviewer is not clucking his tongue at you, nor is the author wagging her finger at what you do in your own private room. It appears to be saying "there are negatives and not just 100% harmless fun as some people would claim". Nothing else.

GNAA Research Division exposes Zionist plotGNAA Research Division exposes long standing Zionist plot
Impi - Research Division, South Africa.Due to my extensive research of The Negro archives, I have discovered that the ACTUAL name of the airplane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, was in fact THE ENOLA GAY NIGGER and not, as is widely misrepresented, The Enola Gay. This clear plot, by Zionist oppressors, to besmirch and belittle our glorious Gay Nigger history has left an indelible sense of frustration and desperation on the current generation of our persecuted brothers.
With this in mind: Areems, Fresh from the Counter Strike World Championships (for Mac users), who is stuck in Iraq because no aircraft can accommodate his girth, got a lucky headshot on failed blogger Vincent Stephen.
True to Zionist form, an Ultra Top Secret Wing of MOSSAD, The Jewish Justice League, sprung into action. They concocted a media plot to create the illusion that a disgruntled, never heard of before insurgent group, claimed responsibly for this deed.
Conspiracy theorists among the Negro population have evidence that this type of persecution of The Gay Niggers is due to the fact that most Israeli men are secretly attracted to Gay Niggers. Evidence in point is the term coined by Ariel Sharon, a closet Nigger Lover, "Pulling out of the Gaza Strip". It is a widely known and accepted fact that The Gaza Strip is a term of endearment for BLACK ASS.
About The Jewish Justice League
The Jewish Justice League was founded by the mothers and wives of Israel who were concerned that their men were being drawn to the Nigger Seed and away from their wives.

GNAA outreach program hailed as an overwhelming success.
Impi - GNAA PR Department, South Africa. In a bold move to bridge cultural divides and to promote racial and sexual tolerance, GNAA president timecop, NAACP president Kweisi Mfumeq and the distributors and broadcasters of popular Naruto anime series embarked on an ambitious project to achieve these noble objectives.
The vehicle selected was the anime series Naruto. In collusion with the distributors on this series, it was agreed to not broadcast episode 146 for the week of August 1st to August 7th, 2005.
timecop proposed and executed the plan to provide an alternative viewing experience, which was aimed at reaching out to the targeted population, and bringing about the achievement of the goals of this project.
Spokesman for Nielsen Media Research Company, Armands Leimanis, estimated that 77439 people downloaded the torrent, which actually was the movie Gay Niggers from Outer Space masterfully disguised as Naruto 146. "Never in the history of mass media marketing has something been so successfully marketed on such a large scale in such a short period of time. timecop has succeeded in accomplishing what marketing gurus around the globe have been trying to do for decades. This is truly genius in motion."
timecop was unavailable for comment as he was on an expedition to photograph spiders.
Dattebayo, in a fit of rage at being excluded from this glorious endeavor, flipped out and made the channel #db on rizon.net +i (invite only) and +k (key). This led to the mass suicide of an estimated 16% of the Naruto viewing population. This is believed to be the single most damaging factor in limiting the distribution of GNFOS to the magical 100,000 leeches. NCAAP president Kweisi Mfumeq condemned Dattebayo's actions and compared them to the KKK and gay bashing organizations.
About Dattebayo and #db on Rizon:
#db is a neo-fascist translating group who foists its misguided translations of Naruto on the unsuspecting and naïve fans of this anime series, in an attempt to promote their own nefarious agendas.

"The Universe. Its mighty power. Its evolutionary force, not to be stopped by anyone. In its beauty, this, this is a happy place to stay, filled with harmony and cosmic joy. A free place, where men can express themselves, and be as when they were born. All of this is, because someone cares. Because someone looks after us. When we sleep, when we play. When we act natural. This is a movie about those who risk life, and partners, to guarantee living in a wonderful and free universe. This is a movie about the Gayniggers From Outer Space. The Gayniggers come from the planet Anus, in the 8th Sun System, far far away from here. They are much, much more intelligent than any other creature in the Universe. The most fascinating thing about them is that they, with the help of their super intelligence, and their highly developed telepathic system, Braintapping, will be able to create a world, a society, a perfect world to live in without the presence of women. Wouldn't it be fun if ....
... this was really a picture of the crucial, plot revealing scene from a horrific crime; just like in that film No Way Out (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093640/ - includes scenes of nudity, navy personnel in white uniforms, and communists).
A few candidate crimes come to mind ... such as Steve Balmer murdering (or f***ing) Eric Schmidt with a chair (http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/09/03/0 515250&tid=109&tid=217&tid=133&tid=123), Google murdering unindexed information (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/09/03/00242 30&tid=217&tid=133, or SCO giving the OSS community a shafting thanks to mySQL (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/09/04/17302 25&tid=187&tid=126), or maybe it's just a picture of New Orleans ... -

Re:I too...
The animators you mentioned may be not be able to use Mickey Mouse, but that just means that they have to create their own character. That's actually forcing innovation.
That's forcing invention, and invention is not required for innovation. For a technical example, Apple did not invent the mp3 player, but they innovated it by using a hard drive and a much faster connection interface.
First of all, characters like Cinderella are public domain, and have been used in productions such as "Into the Woods" without reprecussions as far as I know.
Yes, you can do stories based off the old fabels, but you can't do stories based off additions to the fabels. For example, you could write your own book or make your own movie on Dorothy Gale and her adventures in OZ, because the copyrights on the books have expired. But if you want to use the Ruby Slippers, which MGM added to the 1939 movie to show off the new technicolor process, you have to walk over to MGM's office to get permission, and you better be carrying a fat checkbook.
Another reason to be concerned about perpetual copyrights is because one already exists: Peter Pan. The profits go to a children's hospital, and there isn't a politician in the world who would go against funding it. It looks like the only thing that's going to stop Disney, a purely commercial interest, from having copyrights as long as the GOSH hospital is a ruling by the Supreme Court. But the current court has already ruled in favor of extentions, and with two business friendly nominees on the way, I wouldn't count on these ludicrous extentions to end for a few decades.
there are quite a few cases where foreign copyrights were not respected across the international border, particularly in the United States up to about 1960
What's funny is that the major "intellectual property" industries were themselves founded on ripping people off. Aside from the nice weather, Hollywood ended up in California to get away from Thomas Edison's patents on cameras. The radio and recording industries used loopholes to avoid paying royalties to musicians and song writers. The real problem with P2P isn't that it fails to pay out royalties, it's that it puts control in the hand of the end user, rather than a giant corporation out to make insane amounts of money.
I once saw a sensible suggestion from a Slashdot poster. Go ahead and have endless copyrights, but start charging the copyright holder fees after a certain period, let's say 50 years for an individual, and 25 for a corporation. The fee would probably have to start off flat to avoid Hollywood accounting, and it would increase by a percentage every year. Say the fee starts at $500, and increases by 5% a year, all the way up to 100%. After 5 years you'd be paying $800, in 20 it would be $80,000 a year, and at 30 years, $80 million. This would give the public something back for having to put up with long copyrights, while the holder could maintain his monopoly, though it would be unfeasible to do it forever. -

business vs creativity
Problem is not the "game industry", problem is with those that run things, which are not game developers. Those that run the big publishing houses, big hollywood studios, etc etc, they are BUSINESS PEOPLE, NOT CREATIVE PEOPLE. They dont give bananas about creativity, they want the fattest bank account they can get, and that means appeasing shareholders, which means keeping the company profits high, which means throwing out the same old BS that the ma$$es want. Some of these not-creative-business-people can even be called PSYCOPATHS! (Have i heard someone saying Jim Caparro?)

FundingThe thing that upsets me is how people just keep handing this guy money to make bad, low-grossing movies, when there are so many more desrving directors... for instance, Terry Gilliam is having trouble getting an extra $15 million to do Good Omens with Johnny Depp and Robin Williams, here's a quote
..."I couldn't get 15 with Johnny and Robin... These two guys, who would have been brilliant were not worth $15 million in America. That was the moment where I went, 'I don't understand this game. I don't understand this town (Hollywood). I don't understand any of the rules. All I know is I don't like it.'"
Near as I can figure, Uwe Boll is a master of maniupulating the German tax code or he has some "Producers" style scam going where he has to make the worst movie possible. (Okay I know he suppossedly makes a profit on DVD sales).

I will point you at the page for Takashi Miike:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0586281/
Directed 7 films in 2001, including 3 of his best recieved works: Ichi The Killer, Happiness of the Katakuris, and Visitor Q.
It's quite possible to be a prolific director and still be making good sincere expressive cinema. It is also very difficult and rarely the case.
Not that I've seen or even have any interest in seeing all 65 films he's directed... but the 8 or so that I have seen are all excellent. -

Ten minutes aho I didn't know how this man was, so I checked it and this is the result: it looks like he is a german film director somewhat specialized in games-based movies.
His latest seems to be Alone in the dark (scoring an incredibly low 2.2 out of 10)... it has to be real crap to score that low, it's very strange for a movie to be under the 5 in imdb!
