Finally...
the invasion starts...
<oblig>I for one welcome our new florine overlords..</oblig>
-- Reality continues to ruin my life. - Calvin (Bill Watterson) -
Re:I am in 100% agreement with this guy.Mouse, I've told you before that I can't read your writing when it's all on one line.
;) I think it might be time to learn the non-breaking white space tag. =P But I will respond to a few points that caught my eye.
You seem to assume M means bad- it's a typical Nintendo fanboy response that really gets on my nerves. "M" is just a videogame content rating, just as "R" is a movie content rating, and doesn't necessarily reflect quality in any way.
Indeed. If you will note, I mentioned that in my post several times. I am not debating that the game will be good. But I am debating the style of the game. If a game developer decided to make a Strawberry Shortcake game in a strange style, or if some genius decided that Clerks should be redone in full color, but be completely G rated, what would you say? Or perhaps if someone decided to take Looney Tunes, and make them really badass? Or perhaps remake Looney Tunes so that Bugs Bunny died of a gunshot wound in an extremely graphic manner? Or perhaps making a sequel to a game that bears little to no resemblance to the original?
That's not to say that any of these ideas would create an entirely bad product. But it IS to say that they aren't in keeping of the spirit of the original idea.
And really, that's all I'm trying to say. I like what I see, I really do, and I think the game will be fantastic. But I have a hard time swallowing it as a Zelda game. -

this law states that ISPs must provide parents pr0n-filtering/blocking software for free if requested?
Yes, but it also infers that companies can force ALL their customers to pay for it by hiking their rates. I don't want to be paying for someone else's censorship.<Obligatory Futurama quote:>

Wrong place for the blame
Don't blame the fact that people aren't using their cell phones for Internet access on the web pages. Blame it on the design of the standards.
I'm a web designer who uses XHTML and CSS, but the truth is that if you are on a cell phone you will not want to download any of my pages. Currently the thinking is, "let's make our pages cell phone friendly", by separating presentation from content, but that's not enough. Cell phone users usually want to access some key feature of your website - not actually browse the web. Even with full XHTML and CSS separation, pages are still huge. What we need is a common, widely accepted standard of how to create a cell-friendly sub site without having to recode everything.
Even if the speed and availability problems were fixed (data via cell is still very slow in the US), think of how much it would mean to download IMDB's homepage to look up an actor. No matter how perfectly you fit today's standards, there's just no way to reasonably display that on a cell phone's screen.

Re:Is this a case of Vivendi bailing?
Star Wars Online did well but everywhere you turn there is something Star Wars. The movies are current and there are many console and PC games to keep interest up.
What are you talking about?
Everybody knows that the last Star Wars movie came out in 1983. It wasn't as good as the first two, but it had its moments.

Good Will HuntingIf you took a few calculus you would have to learn a little history about Gottfried Leibniz and Issac Newton fathers of modern calculus. On the other hand if you say Pierre de Fermat (father of differential calculus), everyone has heard of Fermat's Last Theorem.
If you took number theory or some high level mathematics courses and never heard about Srinivasa Ramanujan it would be akin to studying relativistic physics and never hearing about Albert Einstein .
Most people probably heard about Ramanujan recently from the movie "Good Will Hunting". Where they refer to Ramanujan by name several time during the movie, although they totally butchered his name and made me cringe every time they said it. The movie is based on a Ramanujan type character, in Hollywood fashion though. Where a young good looking confidant and outgoing Matt Damon with the physique of a construction worker plays the math genius. Ramanujan was shy, introvert, awkward and not in the best physical health.

Re:You could at least use his name in the article
This reminds me of that movie, you know? The one about that guy that did stuff?
You clearly mean "Big Trouble In Little China" -1986 -
Re:Bow Tie
You'd better also avoid anything involving this guy then.

Terry Schaivo Announces Support for GNAATerry Schaivo Announces Support for GNAA
NEWSFLASH - Startling new information has been recieved this morning regarding the 10-year "right to life" controversy once again thrust into the public eye.
On the day President Bush signed the bill, dubbed as "Terri's Law II" onto the federal books, advocates for the Schiavo family state a startling discovery. Terri's parents, the Schindlers - no doubt covetous jews, have announced their comatose daughter's intentions to support the GNAA.
"We were at her bedside with a video camera, trying to put an end to all of this, if we could just get her to make her intention to continue her hellish brain-dead exiestence clear." said Schaivo's mother. "When we asked her if she wanted to live, what she had to live for....we very disctinctly heard her intentions." These soon to be released five minutes of video show a definate picture of the woman's intentions as she repedately spastically shakes her head and moans what experts say appears to be "G....NAA! G.....NAA!"
"This is a very special day for our organization," GNAA representative and Golden Goatse candidate Penisbird said. "In the midst of this national controversy, it is now very clear that our organization has supporters with a visible profile."
GNAA General Council are currently debating the potential ramifications of this cry of support, and at this time it is unclear if Schiavo will be considered as a candidate for membership - as she is quite clearly neither gay, nor a nigger. "Our organization is generally not open to white devils, filthy breeders, or female creatures - however, considering the high profile nature of the individual and our well-known reputation for philantrophy, it is possible we might make an exception allowing Schiavo to become a member, to fulfill her dying wish," said GNAA representative KiSSy.
As of this time, no definate statement has been made regarding Schiavo's future with the GNAA. However, it is rumored that her parents are now diverting a yet-undisclosed sum of money to the GNAA's Nigerian bank accounts, in accordance with their daughter's wishes.

That's the trick. Be an unpopular character on a scifi series, and all the Slashdotters will love you. Trust me, in a few years, Ahmed Best will get a blog and register on Slashdot, and we'll all over him.

Unisex bathrooms(I assume one for each sex)
Two bits:
- As I recall the show Ally McBeal used this as a plot point in the pilot. The partners wanted a unisex bathroom in order to incerease communication/camaraderie/etc in the firm. While a lot of the stuff on the show (especially towards the end of its run) was weak, I thought they milked that concept pretty well.
- On an anniversarry show of 60 Minutes Harry reasoner commented to the effect that he pitched most of his stories to producer Don Hewitt by cornering him in the bathroom. They then had Ed Bradley and some of the other male correspondents say the same thing, indicating "everyone knows that's how you pitch a story to Don." Then they told Lesley Stahl this during her interview and she commented something like "Damn! No wonder I can't get anything on the air around here!"

Which of course has already been made into a movie "The 13th Warrior" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120657/.

A note on prior art: A For Andromeda
The argument in TFA is to send the details of a trading machine out so that the other civ can build it. If anyone has read (or old enough like me to have seen the TV series) A For Andromeda this tells of the receipt of a message with designs for a computer, the same scenario is played out in detail. Its purpose is not revealed, it is assumed it is here to help, but there are sinister overtones. The story is never about black and white issues, always trying to guess the motivations of an alien civilisation. An extremely good story about SETI. Then imagine that the details are not received by us but by someone else, how much will THEY trust the machine. Will it have ulterior motives.

Troy Bad?Troy was not bad but it also was not good. I cannot imagine a movie will do those stories the justice they deserve.
Troy was actually pretty good. Let's see how people would like it if the story was followed letter for letter.
Same applies to LoTR. How many people would have fawned all over the three films if all the characters spoke like they did in the books and all the dialogue was left in.
As adaptations go, they were satisfactory. Heck, Troy was actually pretty good compared to a lot of the dreck people shell out money for.
As for how you adapt Ender's Game to a screen play, lots of luck. I have high hopes for lots of revered novels, but realize too many of them would require significant change to fit. Can't have people standing around all the time doing soliloquies all the time so you know what's on their minds.

Re:Satan's Turtle!
That ain't Satan, it's Bowser from the Super Mario Brothers series. Which kinda makes sense, cause that's no turtle, it's actually a koopa.
Which makes me wonder if this movie is somehow coming to life. If so, I want to know where to get my spring-loaded shoes. -

If they can understand Perl, they can understand just about any human language.
Ack. If they ever found out that we were the source of that evil, they'd nuke our planet on principle.
You remember Independence Day? They didn't want our natural resources, they were just pissed off after a thousand-year-long Perl debugging effort. -

Re:I don't know what's sadder...
Why is it that prejudice against Christians is the last remaining acceptable prejudice?
And yet, despite this "prejudice", Gibson's film made it into thousands of theaters across the country, and earned back an order of magnitude more money than it cost him to make the film. While these films, because they commit the cardinal sin of simply mentioning facts that disagree with the opinions of certain Christians, are silently being denied screening in the same country that showered riches at Gibson's feet.
Maybe you need to recalibrate your victim meter a tad?

Re:I don't know what's sadder...
But it was religious fundamentalists who protested Martin Scorsese's rendition of Nikos Kazantzakis' The Last Temptation of Christ before they saw it.

Documentary Startup.com
This reminds me of the excellent documentary Startup.com.
I recommend it to anybody who's interested in seeing from the inside what the glory days of the dot com bubble looked like. Starting from nothing with a cool idea, getting millions from venture capitalists, and then the fall from grace.
Great stuff.
In another vein, I recommend the other documentary by the same girl. -

The story behind Xenu
Anyway, have you guys wondered what is Xenu? If you ever watched Travolta's worst. movie. ever., or if you read testimonies from former scientologists, you'd see that Xenu is the perpetual villain said to be the greatest conspirator that wants to destroy Scientology.
I wonder what would happen if we told a scientologist: "Did you know Hubbard worked for Xenu and founded Scientology to keep you isolated and 'under control'?"
Hmmm I wonder what they'd say. -
Re:Yea but...
This film is great -> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111112/ But, I had to watch it a couple of times to understand everything.
Still, it's not as bad as listening to the Scotts!! -
Be nice!!!
For crying out loud people, if everyone keeps bashing on the Scientologists, we may never get more doses of quality cinema like Battlefield Earth (IMDB Bottom 100 #36 as of right now)...
-
Re:Make sense please
I know who Scientologists are and how EVIL they can be. About the same as Mormons and not as bad as Catholics and Protestants.
I haven't seen either of those two movies but since neither has anything to do with Miike Takashi, I'll just ignore them.
I was told a few days ago, "There's plenty of wheat beer homebrews in the house. I don't like it, so could you do me a favor and finish off the bottles". I'm trying. I'm really trying. -

Re:Constantine
You're right, I'm a Buffy fan, but I'm not an indiscriminate "Buffy uber alles" fan. Given the previous comments about how Constantine should be English and blond as well as nihilistic (paraphrasing there), it sounded very similar to Marsters Buffy character, Spike. IMDb profile. I may be prejudiced by him being a stage actor, like me, of course.
Yeah, Buffy is cheesy, but at least it's parmesan, man ;-)
