Re:another movie...
There's another flick utilizing the same technique, and indeed before "Sky Captain..." to boot: Immortel (ad vitam).
Some actors and most of the props are CGI, and albeit a bit crude and easily spotted, it creates a very special and unique atmosphere in the already "fantastic" story. -

When it came out in August, it did sorta suck compared to most summer movies.

Cool!Build a gun that only shoots robots and not humans, and we can construct Westworld!
Well, we need fuckable hooker robots, too, but, hey, they're just around the corner.
Or they would be if the techno-wizzes of the world would stop mucking about with tablet computers and first-person shooter game engines, and deliver to the world what it really wants.

Re:Too nervous to watch it
I think some of our favourite franchises are setting an annoying precedent.
Bond (, James Bond) was guilty of surfing twice in Die Another Day.
If there wasn't a shark in the first stealth-surf sequence for him to jump then there surely must have been in the second parasail-surf-on-cockpit-canopy on several tidal waves sequence. He, of course, looked like a twat.
At least with Legolas it was done in-character as a dextrous feat.

Gentlemen! Behold!... Corn!
Dr. Weird : Gentlemen! Behold!... Corn!
Steve : [pretending to be surprised] Okaaay... you know, this is pretty nice! Yeah, I am kinda hungry...
Dr. Weird : Good! Then let the mating BEGIN! Mwahahahahah!

Re:All for it...Yes. Remember, as K said in MIB, "a person is smart. People are stupid." Or something along those lines.
I agree that the voice of a crowd tends to the most common opinion, no matter how wacky the one side is or how reasonable the other side is. The "easy to understand" way, whether right or wrong, tends to become the norm.
Power plants in general have dangers. Nuclear power is arguably more or less safe, depending on where you stand in the crowd. The bad that can happen is terribly bad, but the safety put in place is much more robust to help avoid the bad.
Undeniably, nuclear power is not oil. If the people could understand the risks and benefits without falling into mob mentality, unless the mob gets with the program, then we can begin moving forward.
Put the power plants far enough away from the people to make them comfortable. Heck, surround them with military bases to make them safer. Put 'em in the deserts or far out in the fields, away from the cities, if that's what it takes.
Chuck the waste into space. Launch it toward the sun 'cause I'm sure it wouldn't mind, or into deep space if there's fear of something bad inside the solar system. Use the space elevator if there's fear of a rocket explosion...
An aside, since I realize the article is about nuclear power, is what about other renewable sources? How about putting wind generation in every cloverleaf on the freeway to power the nearby street lights? How about putting more than one dam on a river for hydro-electric, or just more dams in general? Why not replace those massive refineries with huge farms of wind and solar power generators?
Why not make hybrid cars the norm? Subsidise consumers for buying them, or companies to help make them inexpensive. And why not make them so they can use ethanol? Less than 1/3 the oil consumed per gallon, and lots more miles-per-gallon on top. Even if they have to be the size of SUVs to make Americans happy, the bulk of commuters don't use the power in the gasoline engines anyway; as long as they can be modified to still provide exciting car chases...
I think once we start moving in that direction, dependency will drop, and the rising market will, like elsewhere, reduce prices and increase productivity.

Re:conspiracy theorists rejoice
I think you'll find that while the ones in the public consciousness are overwhelmingly Democrat (excusing say Kelsey Grammer) the backers who put up the money are as Republican as they come.
What like Seven Spielberg? The second richest man in Hollywood and producer of over 100 projects? Man with a personal fortune estimated in the 2 billion dollar range?
You've believed the lie that only Rich people support the GOP. Understand something, rich people are going to stay rich no matter who's in office. Do you think that there is anything Kerry could have done that would have resulted in Bill Gates not being rich anymore? Murdoch and Turner will still be bitter rivals and filthy stinking rich in 4 years. The wealthy pick their affiliations based on social issues.

Re:you've been served
"You've been served" is a combination reference. "To be served" is to receive formal notice that you are being sued. "You got served!" is a rarely used phrase in the American hip-hop community that basically means "You got shown up in public!" or "I bet you feel stupid for bragging that you're the best, since that six-year-old girl just made you look like an idiot!" It's a rarely-used phrase because there was a seriously embarrassing movie released with the same name. It's even funnier because the movie was supposed to make a major star out of the lead actor Omarion, who quit his mediocre R&B band B2K on the assumption (and reassurances of his manager/father) that this movie would make him a breakout singer/actor/astrophysicist multimedia talent. The movie came out, tankality ensued, and now "You got served!" is pretty much a punchline.

Re:What a scoop!
The problem with photoblogs is the same problem with regular blogs - lack of focus. Precisely because it is so easy to web-publish, there are far too many people posting without giving any thought to producing a thematically-consistent portfolio of work. This shouldn't limit your creativity:
- A photo-a-day blog can be very compelling (I'm thinking of the album made by Harvey Keitel's character in Smoke).
- Build your blog around something offbeat like things your dog brought home or food that looks like Elvis - whatever turns your crank
- Take pictures of doors, sidewalks, homeless people or whatever it takes to produce a thematic arc
- Go out and blitz a city with 500 pics in one day, and show us your best 10 (or better yet, 5)
Your equipment doesn't even matter - use your crappy phone cam, but use it well. The ability to edit your body of work, not just your pictures, is what will separate your portfolio from the rest of the drek that's out there. -
Perpetual copyright? Say it ain't so!
Copyright is not perpetual anywhere, and this is laid down in the US in the constitution IIRC.
In theory they last until 30/50/90 years after the author's death, although with extensions pushed through every time Steamboat Willie or That's All Right looks in danger of entering the public domain, the current limit is effectively forever -1day -

Re:Old news...
The smokeless Premier cigarette played a small part in the movie Barbarians at the Gate in which James Garner plays wily, crude RJR CEO F. Scott Johnson, who said I think has some of the most priceless movie quotes ever.
At the beginning of the film, Johnson first tries the premier, which was receiving poor reviews and which was described as "tastes like shit, smells like a fart." When Johnson noted that the draw on the cigarette was wrong (difficult) and the RJR scientist said that was the "hernia effect" Johnson said something like "that's fucking great! Buy Premier cigarettes, they'll rip your balls off!"
A highly recommend movie.

Re:Thank God!And, to her, no, I still won't watch F.9/11, thank you very much. I don't need any extra propoganda in my life.
Why not? It's important to know the arguments on both sides of an issue, no matter how ridiculous or even offensive they might seem. There was a case a while back where a professor was admonished for including passages from Mein Kampf in the reading for a history class on Nazi Germany, and he rightly pointed out that it's impossible to begin to understand the issues in Nazi Germany unless you know what was driving Hitler (it's a little more complicated than 'hatred').
I just watched Fahrenheit 9/11 back-to-back with Fahrenhype 9/11, and it was interesting to compare and contrast the two movies. And though I wasn't pleased at the idea of watching the latter, it did raise some interesting counter-questions to the ones raised by Moore's film. A film is only propaganda if you let it be propaganda. If you take it with a grain of salt, you'll get a lot more out of it.

Re:Why NOT?
There exist several reasons to use a firearm other than to kill a human being. What about target shooting? What about hunting? What about nonlethal uses of a firearm on people, such as aiming a handgun at an attacker's shoulder to make him drop the gun that he's trying to use lethally, as Holly Hunter demonstrates on a shooting range in the beginning of the movie Copycat ?

Re:Don't believe it...
The story of "Jeanie" (or Genie) was made into a movie called Mockingbird don't sing. Another instance of a child reared without exposure to language is Victor, "The wild child". He was supposed to be found by wolves and wasn't brought back to civilization untill he was 12 years old.

Re:Why?Because the elections are a spectator sport just like the World Series.
Closer to a more traditional sporting event, if not so polite and civilized.

Can I get a White Suit made out of this stuff?I want to get lynched by the cotton workers union.
From the article. . .
The tough silica particles resist abrasion. Meanwhile, the fluorine-rich resins do not absorb water, so the ink forms droplets that can be wiped off.
Uh. . , isn't Fluorine is sort of very, very, very corrosive? Of course, I'm sure TDK has taken that into account. . .
Cuz, you know, a slow-self-destructing CD wouldn't interest a company like TDK at all. Right?
If memory serves, the Man in the White Suit narrowly avoided getting himself killed by the unionists because his indestructible suit wore out after a few days.

request for enlightenment?
Come on, we all know nothing can ever be truly scratch-proof.
Not a troll, but a genuine query... how do we know nothing can be scratch proof?
its been more years than i care to remember since i did chemistry and i only vaguely recall mohr's scale, and i seem to recall then that it was flawed (no pun intended) and needed to go to 11 or some such due to new material chemistry {or have i just been watching too much spinal tap?]
my point is, do we have a good enough understanding of the physics/chemistry of scratching and hardness to be able to make that assertation?
Or to put it another way what's the hard evidence? -

It's quite possible this will make you feel like a complete idiot... but if you just click on the guys name in the IMDB link you so handilly provided, it will reveal to you his past credits. Including his role in the Matrix as... *drumroll*... Commander Lock.
Sorry to be the one to point that out. The irony IS kind of amusing though. Well, at least I thought it was funny ;) -

What character did he play? I don't remember seeing or hearing him anywhere in the films. "Actors returning to their triolgy roles"??If you don't know who Lennix is, go to a movie store and rent the coolest adaptation ever of Shakespeare's bloodiest play ever.

Feral Children
This movie is very interesting and shocking as well but it really happened. It is about a "wild child" who never learned to speak because it was raised on an isolated room until 13 years old, without any contact with humans, expect her cruel and raper father.
It was based on a book called Genie.
Feral Children, as they call it, is an interesting and well studied topic on psychology. -
