The words say "Congress shall make no law." You're the one choosing to interpret them literally. If you want to get into the 1st Amendment applying to the State Legislatures you're going to have to talk about case law and guess what? The case law doesn't agree with your interpretation of the 1st Amendment. You've lost this discussion on two fronts now, the literal reading of the words and the jurisprudence that has evolved around them. Why do you keep trying?

I just saw Citizenfour. It's interesting to know how the news about Snowden got started. The movie makes the point that those who take away privacy do that because they want control.

When I saw the movie at the theater, it was followed by a session where Laura Poitras appeared via Skype and took questions. She's a genuine badass freedom fighter.

A movie made about fall of Berlin Wall where the mom awakened from a coma but doctor tells son his mom must not get too excited. However, while she was in a coma the wall came down so he has make it convincing things are still the same (their resident was on the east side). He gets help from friends including one who wires up a TV set to a VCR and they create various programs from East Germany. There's a few things he has to mitigate like explaining the big Coca Cola billboard that appears in her window view. Don't humor yourselves, slashdot editors. We don't have enough traffic to take down a small conservative blog anymore, let alone a web page hosted by Blizzard. They know what they're doing, at least when they put up a website.

Have any sites gone down in the past 12 months from too much slashdot traffic? I haven't heard of any. We didn't even take down any of the small-time gun 3D printing sites, which are practically the bread and butter of this site now.

After the terrible new trilogy, I'm cautiously excited by the new movie written by Lawrence Kasdan, who had zero involvement with the episodes 1-4, but did write such films as The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

They'll be plenty of eye candy (to be sure -- so did the originals!), but maybe having a good writer (who made almost all the Star Wars films you love -- and none of the ones you hate) means you'll have a good story?

Let us break this question into 3 parts.

Frist, I still think you are confusing Zelman (child company, maybe viable) with Moneual (parent company, fraud, massive bank loans, not viable.)

Second, why operations vs. financials matter. Here is an example. You buy an apartment building with a 10m loan. The building is fully leased with long term leases. It is not sitting on a toxic waste dump, is not filled with asbestos, etc. It generates enough cash to cover maintenance, management fees, taxes, etc. There is a problem. It does not generate enough cash to pay the 10m loan. Maybe it can only support a 8m loan. Look at Enron. They had many well run viable electric power plants that are still running today. They just needed to be separated from the massive fraudulent debt of the parent.

The project is a failure. Question – should you tear down the building? Probably not. The building is economically viable. The problem is that the price paid for the building was too high.

The rational course of action is to restructure to loan to 8m. (which kind of implies that the banks should size the building and push the current owners out.). Note, we are not making a judgment on how we got into debt. Bad judgment, over optimism, fraud, etc. We don't care. Assigning blame won't change how we get out.

Third, why exaggerate sales to get loans. Or to simplify your question, why commit fraud? Exaggerating sales is just a means to an end. Most accounting fraud starts off small with good intentions. One has a temporary short fall, there is a really good opportunity, normally I am so good a picking the ponies, etc. It's just going to be a few thousand. There is always a promise to make it up next week. Or the week after that. And after a few years and a few million dollars, people wonder where they went wrong.

Hollywood has always had a different standard. I was rewatching Good Morning, Vietnam. I was a little surprised to see child nudity in a major Hollywood film. Mind you, it was an innocent shot of some Vietnamese kids playing in the fire hydrant, but it was full frontal nudity of children nonetheless. And it's also hard to argue intent. Something that was meant to be innocent by the artist could still be arousing to other people looking at the content.

I'm torn between "We spared no expense" and "God help us, we're in the hands of engineers".

A long time ago i had to write a C/C++ fixed-point arithmetic library for a (major) telecom company because their billing processes would routinely output totals with cent errors; over a full year these added up to a significant ammount of money, a-la-Superman III.
