None of these studies ever make a convincing case that the Bermuda Triangle has statistically significantly higher rates of the rogue waves (or whatever the explanation du jour is) than areas outside the Bermuda Triangle. Until you do that, these explanations are unconvincing.

The summary contains the quote, "there are storms to the South and North, which come together..." OK, so North and South storms come together. The challenge to that thesis is, "can storms come together elsewhere, and do they?" And the answer is Yes, of course they do!

This is just one datapoint, but it's an example of the problem. The storm depicted in the movie The Perfect Storm, was actually a merger of 2 different storms. That tended to generate many strong rogue waves. The problem this raises? That storm was far outside of the Bermuda Triangle. And it's not me that has to prove statistical significance, it's the study authors.

Unless they can prove that there's something special or unique about the Bermuda Triangle, something that would justify the name and the reputation, then these hypotheses are both flimsy and unproven. Yes storms merge, and generate rogue waves, and rogue waves are indeed dangerous. However it remains unproven that the Bermuda Triangle is any special place where rogue waves are any of:

1). Greater in number;
2). Greater in size;
3). Especially dangerous for any reason at all.

As with all of these gotcha stories against Trump, "government actually follows its own regulations for the first time in decades" is spun as the end of civilization and the next step toward Waterworld being reclassified as "prophetic."

Anyone remember the Spielberg movie AI? It wasn't very good but was germane to this topic.

In that story there were gatherings of ordinary people who set up bleachers and made a sport out of demolishing abandoned AI-based robots just for the glee of it. The destruction was made as sadistic as possible, and one memorable line was one robot waiting in the pen asked another -- "could you please turn off my pain sensors?"

When it became the protaganist's turn he starts begging to be spared. The crowd's mood turns because robots are not supposed to do that.

Norway is rehabilitative, not destructive, to those who commit crimes. Michael Moore's film, Where to Invade Next explored the system in Norway, and prompted articles like this one: Why Norway's prison system is so successful. Quote from that article: "... when criminals in Norway leave prison, they stay out. It has one of the lowest recidivism rates in the world at 20%. The US has one of the highest: 76.6% of prisoners are re-arrested within five years." Being destructive to those who commit crimes is another crime, a crime committed by the government.

To be fair Norway doesn't have the massive multicultural issues that the US has. Despite all the cheering for multiculturism it makes life harder in many ways and simply getting along is one of them. US prisons are breeding grounds for gangs, rehabilitation is not really a goal. I'd start over since the current system is so broken that I don't see how incremental reforms could ever change anything. Of course we could start a parallel system for people more likely to be able to be rehabilitated but I'm sure disparate impact would make that illegal. Until disparate impact is dropped a great many changes can never happen.

I was thinking that NASA must be hiring writers who are roughly my daughter's age - when she was growing up, one of her favorite movies was "The Brave Little Toaster" .

Telling a completely new story in a great universe? Great idea.

Telling a derivative story in a great universe? Good idea.

Shooting a remake of a great movie? Decent idea.

Shooting a movie with an iconic character, defined by an iconic actor? Terrible idea.

The Star Trek remakes got away with it because the roles made the actors more than the actors made the roles (though they're still boring movies).

But Han Solo was cool because Harrison Ford is a top-end actor who absolutely nailed the character of Han Solo. A Han Solo movie without Harrison Ford is basically a movie of going "Boy, that character isn't nearly as interesting as I remember. And that guy still isn't Harrison Ford!"

It's not like there were a lack of stories to tell in the Star Wars universe.
