They weren't always that ugly. They're old, mmmkay?
Couldn't readily find an old picture of Waxman (in all of three minutes trying), but here's one of Barney Frank, and one of Dick Cheney. Not nearly as homely, in either case.

Re:Apple Tax!
Here's your solution. If you really like OS X and running it in a vm isn't good enough for you, build a hackintosh. Personally, I see no advantage aside from re-learning a bunch of slightly different conventions.

The single most compelling feature of FireFox
that no other browser has, that I know of - you can over ride the fonts a page specifies. Which is fantastic, as I don't ever want to look at a serif font on my screen. I like chrome and safari, but until I can do this I will never use them as my main browser.

Will work great with...
This would work great with the UK's plan for a new Digital Economy. On no, wait - it won't. Can't have open wi-fi any more. Can't have any sort of Internet connection where anyone using it cannot be tracked down and punished for allegedly infringing copyright.
Of course, according to Stephen Timms, Minister "for Digital Britain", if someone was worried about wireless connections being used by other people, he "could introduce a password so that somebody driving up outside his house would not be able to use his [connection]". So wireless is perfectly secure. Although this is the same person who was recently caught referring to an "Intellectual Property (IP) address" so possibly not the best person to be running our digital economy.

Not Surprising
A well-known hacker of the iPhone, who previously defeated Apple's restrictions on developers, has claimed in a video to have hacked the iPad.
It's not surprising that a veteran iPhone hacker was able to root the iPad right away. After all, they have very similar hardware.

Re:Not a bad idea...
...if only for the fact that Century Gothic looks better than Arial.
Uh...the link displays a 1x1-pixel png, and what's more, I think it's white. So they certainly would save ink using a font like this.
(Did something just go "whoosh" over my head?)
-
Re:Not a bad idea...
...if only for the fact that Century Gothic looks better than Arial.
Thanks for the comparison. Now there is a new problem. The new font uses more space and hence resulting in more wastage of paper! Although there might be a valid argument saying 30% saving of ink is more desirable as compared to 1 extra line every 8 lines.
All of this even if we ignore the fact that people print so many emails that a change of font is going to result in tangible savings. The article mentions the cost of ink per gallon. It would have been interesting to know the total ink consumption in gallons irrespective of the matter printed.
As per my personal experience as a grad student. I have printed only 5-10 emails in many years as compared to many many technical papers.

Re:Standard compliance?
Those are two different things. text-align: center centers stuff in a div. the margin: 0 auto you set to a div to center that block (the div) in its container.
Per the standards, correct.
Even IE6 works correctly with this, so I don't know what the issue is here.
IE6 doesn't work correctly with that. Margin:auto won't center a div (even though it should); text-align:center on the parent will (even though as you note, it shouldn't.)

Re:Bring home the bacon!
Parent said it in a pretty trollish way but his point is true. Republicans can't balance the checkbook:
http://www.thefreespeechzone.net/images/charts/bush_deficit_graphic.gif
I assume however he meant Iraq... Where bush did piss away billions of dollars to make a statement. Revenge perhaps rather than a pissing contest if you want. But still wasted money on war.
And don't give me the 'to bring them democracy bs'. The US gets attacked, huge thing, everywhere on the news. But whilst not getting revenge or making a statement the US gov suddenly rationally decides to invade a country from the region of the attackers and liberate them? BS. Re:Not a sonic boom
You are mixing up two things here:
The sonic boom is what you hear when any aircraft going faster than mach 1 passes overhead, not just when it breaks the sound barrier.
The shock wave (very nice to see here: http://imgur.com/Cw5nS (an F-22?)) only happens at around mach 1 when all the sound waves are on top of each other and don't diverge because the source is moving slower or faster than mach 1. -

Re:Threatening??
Here is a copy of the note itself
http://imgur.com/CeACw.pngHow does this constitute a threatening letter?
"Dear Mick, I Can Has R18 Rating Pls? kthxbai"Screen shot Taken from http://www.abc.net.au/news/video/2010/02/16/2820930.htm (not by me)
Talk about the media taking it and running with it and blowing out of proportion
The issue isn't that the note contained a direct threat. It's that an anonymous cut-out-letter note was placed on his home doorstep. I'd be concerned for the safety of my family if people started coming to my house to leave such notes as well. It shows a degree of willingness to invade my personal space and at the same time a desire to remain anonymous that I can't imagine anyone NOT finding somewhat creepy and worrisome.

Re:Uh, what?
These people use their home computers for the Web and email, for very simple word processing and maybe for the ambitious, spreadsheets for home accounts and hobbies.
True, but my experience is that most people have that one little program that they would never give up, it might be something for their hobby or just some silly cute thing, but if they can't find it on the app store they would be upset. Another thing is that simple word processing is almost always coupled with a printer, and that printer is rarely wireless enabled.
I don't think there's anything to stop them using an iPad for all that, especially with the keyboard addon.
That is already two addons, a USB adapter (if it supports printers) and the keyboard. Granted you wouldn't keep the printer attached all the time, but if you also need the adapter for your camera, then simply unplugging the printer can turn into a two step process. Worse, the keyboard destroys the "kick back in your comfy chair" aspect, if you want to write for any amount of time you are at your desk where you might as well use a full sized keyboard and the computer that will print without hunting for an adapter.
Of course Apple doesn't want to completely kill the market for Macs.I fully expect to see an iLife for iPad, that's just full of little hints that you could do more on a real Mac.
The cynic in me says that this is the reason Apple is fighting netbooks, they are small, cheap and can replace a computer for many people. If they make an expensive netbook no one will buy it, if they make a cheap one they might eat into Macbook and possibly Mini sales. On the other hand, if they consistently attack netbooks as a bad idea, and then release a better replacement that does what most people would want to do away from their main computer, but not quite enough to use it at your desk, they can charge quite more then for a comparable netbook (because netbooks are bad and this isn't one), but less then their laptops and desktops without eating into that market segment too much.
I suspect it's not a "real" computer not because of
/. nerds, but because Apple doesn't want it to be one, we are just pointing this out. -
Re:I have sat next to these guys.
Look at his tweets. He's pissed that they waited until he was in the seat, to tell him "sorry, you need the second seat after all"
Hmmm... so he knew enough ahead of time that he really should be buying two seats because of his weight and did so. Then boarded the plane without a second seat available on it. When he got on the flight he obviously knew he didn't have his second seat available. Considering the recent photo at:
http://i.imgur.com/UfBNC.jpgI'd say SW was justified in kicking him off the flight. He's quite large, and it seems like anyone seated next to him would have a pretty miserable flight. I'm sure it's embarrassing to have to be kicked off a flight after you're already boarded (especially for being to big), but such is life.
Reaching out to all his fans as if he was being victimized seems childish. Unfortunately many of the people supporting the airlines decision all seem to have their own form of childishness in demonizing the overweight.
-
Re:I have sat next to these guys.
http://imgur.com/UfBNC.jpg has GOT to be pretty close, he is wearing the same sweater on the plane in question as in that talk.
-
Re:I have sat next to these guys.
Well, as recently as 16 months ago he was highly concerned over his weight. I don't know how recent these pictures are, but airline seats are somewhat narrow and it would not surprise me if his girth extended into an extra seat. If this was some schmuck off the street nobody would be talking about it, but because we feel some kind of connection to him everyone is up in arms. Obviously the airline definitely handled it in the wrong way, but he still is a fat fuck.
