Re:The Constitution is more than paper. Ron Paul
Yea, it's paper made from hemp.
Do you have a source for that?
:-) I actually have an interest in traditional inks and writing, but cannot find any source for the material of the Constitution. As far as I know it was written on parchment (skin) like many legal documents of the time. I have a friend who makes paper the (really) old fashioned way out of linen rags in the style of Europe, but I know that hemp was a popular fiber here.Perhaps I misspoke. When I answered I was thinking of the "Declaration of Independence". Thomas Jefferson wrote drafts of the DOI on hemp paper. Here's are links for that. However the Jefferson Monticello says more than likely the paper was made from flax or linen rags.
Richard Stallman has a document on his website that says the USA Constitution was written on hemp paper. Another link says the drafts of the Constitution were written on it. There's one simple way to tell what paper was used for both the DOI and the Constitution, simply test them. However I can easily imagine the government not wanting to test them because if they are written on hemp paper then that would stengthen the hands of those who want to legalize hemp.

Re:Corruption is part of the culture of AfricaOf course, the U.S. and most of the rest of the world is making too much money off of the exploitation of Africa to actually want to fix things. Initially, I couldn't think of any way the US could be exploiting African countries, because we don't have colonies there, they're not in a strategic location, and they aren't worth much as trading partners, unlike China. For the most part, I'd say we ignore them more than anything, except for the extracting Africa's natural resources. One just has to glance at the diamond industry to see mass exploitation in action.
http://ihscslnews.org/view_article.php?id=162
http://nyc.indymedia.org/en/2006/10/78084.html
I'm typically not one to jump on protest bandwagons (and I think protesting in front of diamond merchants and jewelers isn't the way to go here - they're not the ones doing anything wrong). But this is pretty damn obvious even to someone as typically oblivious as me.
Still, please don't forget that the US sends quite a lot of money, both official and unofficial, to Africa in the form of foreign aid and private donations. And while I agree that corruption ruins good intentions (and sucks up relief funds), there's not much else that can be done, short of an armed invasion - and the US military is already stretched pretty thin. It's a bit too broad a brush, I think, to say "the US" when talking about exploitation. I think most people are complicit by ignorance (or perhaps apathy) - I'd like to think that no one wants to willingly buy a diamond paid for by someone else's blood, but it just hasn't been a big story until fairly recently. -
Re:False equivalenceAnyone who needs to apply a thick enough brush to cover both of these activities with the same whitewash is doing a disservice. Whether doing something wrong is local or international, it is still wrong. The Government should put it's efforts towards making the world a better place, and not spying on people (most spying is based on economic espionage btw), and not the FUD that comes out of the White House.
On the terrorism side of things; some (and I stress the word some) people just want to kill Americans because of their overbearing authority and influence in (and directed towards) foreign countries (Israel and the "occupied territories", Cuba, Venezuela, Iraq etc ad nauseum). Clearly the likes of the DEA has no business spying on people whether locally or internationally. But the US (government) continues to force it's immorality on other countries and people. One should ask oneself why they like spying on groups dedicated to Peace and that declare themselves to be anti-war.
If there was some oversight (without needing whistle-blowers and lawsuits), checks-and-balances (much like the US government was originally designed to have), and blinders to focus spying on those countries and individuals who pose an actual physical threat to America and Americans then there could be some credibility to spying (eavesdropping on phone calls, for example). Until that day comes, the US will just be looked down upon (by it's own citizens) as a military and police state. I suppose the average middle-class US citizen may not think of their country as being oppressive, but I could presume that the 40% of US citizens who end up being arrested may think differently (see notes), as well as the foreign nationals who get sent off to secret prisons because they happen to have the wrong name (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khalid_El-Masri).
A quote from the article: Mike McConnell, director of national intelligence, says industry deserves "thanks, not lawsuits." This type of attitude shows how perverted people in government think.
Notes: Some nine percent of all American men can now expect to be housed at least temporarily in a state or federal prison during their lifetimes (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 1997). When jails and probation are added, the percentage passing through custody rises to one-fourth of the male population (Donziger, 1996). Roots, Roger. "When the Past is a Prison: The hardening Plight of the American Ex-Convict"
University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Department of Sociology If recent incarceration rates remain unchanged, an estimated 1 of every 15 persons (6.6%) will serve time in a prison during their lifetime. Based on current rates of first incarceration, an estimated 32% of black males will enter State or Federal prison during their lifetime, compared to 17% of Hispanic males and 5.9% of white males. http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/crimoff.htm The common fact is that these crimes are more violations of criminalized violations of "Folk Ways, and accepted moral violations. http://dc.indymedia.org/newswire/display/141773/index.php -

Re:It doesn't "remotely shut down vehicles"
-"Police spokeswoman Tammy Ewin initially said no pepper spray was used on protesters, but Sgt. Clint Winkler, a supervisor on duty, told The Associated Press he tried to use pepper spray on one woman who would not leave, but it hit her glasses. She was then subdued with a Taser, Winkler said."
- "Winkler said campus police tried to quell the march, and at one point protesters grabbed the camera of a freelance media photographer and broke it. City police tried to help and said some protesters fought the effort to break up the march.
- "That's when they were told, due to the violence, that this was no longer a lawful protest," Winkler said. "They were told to disperse, peacefully disperse, and failed to do so we started down the sidewalk _ officers in front, K-9's behind us, and started pushing the crowd down the sidewalk.""
- ""The response was way over the top," Meieran said. "Why in the (expletive) were they using Tasers on these nonviolent protesters in the first place? I heard no dispersal order. What they're saying is total (expletive).""
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines05/0821-01.htm
- "I was taken to the ground by a police officer during that time
I was pepper sprayed the officer picked up my glasses sprayed my face
with the pepper spray. Once I got to the ground I was then tasered in
the thigh for what felt like an eternity. It was the most excruciating
pain I have ever felt. I felt like I was burning. My hand reached
down to feel what was on my leg and I felt an electrical shock running
through my entire body. I could not stop myself from screaming. It was
horrifying. I could not believe that after I had already been sprayed
and on the ground they would then proceed to taser me."
http://pittsburgh.indymedia.org/news/2005/08/20117.php
"McNeilly said the officers' use of pepper spray and Tasers
at the protest was justified because protestors had turned
from peaceful conduct to active resistance that became an assault on officers.
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/s_374322.html
Hmmm, I'm not saying I support the use of a TASER in this case, but it's not exactly a clear cut case of police brutality. A peaceful protest turned violent and she was at the front of the line, wrong place and wrong time?
Hmm, a little more digging gets this:
"And a breakdown of events (from a local man posting on Digg, corroborated by the news):
1. A man, Edris Robinson, strikes a cameraman covering the event (later charged with assault)
2. The cameraman runs to get police
3. Robinson runs to the crowd
4. Police find Robinson, try to apprehend him
5. His girlfriend, Deanna Caliguiri, tries to pull him away (later plead guilty to disorderly conduct and resisting arrest)
6. The cops use pepper spray on Deanna, she continues to resist
7. The cops warn Deanna a few times that they will taser her
8. The cops taser her"

A very, very valid point. Where DO you draw the line?
Personally I find hate groups such as the KKK abhorrent, but does that mean they should be shut down and not allowed to protest or rally? No. Even they deserve the liberty to gather, to say their opinions and gather in protest. It is, of course, a double edged sword: freedom of speech means freedom for everyone.

mega conglomerates also provide high entry independent of government.
In broadcasting yes, but that's because the FCC sales licenses only to those with megabucks. Because of these airwave licenses the FFC sold, mass media is able to keep out competitors. Don't believe me, try to start your own broadcasting radio or tv station. Dispite modern techonolgy making it possible for more stations to occupy the same frequency bands, those who already have licenses fight tooth and nail to prevent more stations from starting. Pirate radio stations are usually shutdown by the FCC as soon as another local station complains even though there is no interference. As for print media, even staid newspapers are struggling, because of the internet. At the same tyme some groups are making good use of the net, such as Meetup, Indy Media, and Narco News.
of course how can you compete with Walmart and Target?
How did they get so big? By giving people low prices. If you want to fight them then when they plan to build a new store in your area you need to attend planning and zoning board meetings and voice your opposition. Make it known to local politicians your position, afterall they can't build a new store without governemnt approval. Then campaign at the state level to have the legislature pass a bill, and have the governor sign it, requiring them to provide health benefits to thier employees.
Many libertarians here on
/. even supported ms business tactics and opposed any ruling on them as it would affect the free market. Some may but I'm one that opposes any and all anticompetitive business practices, and if anyone doesn't then they are neither Libertarian nor freemarket advocates. Afterall a market is only free when there's free competition.

Gawd bless the US of TFU!
I, GEORGE W. Re: "do no evil"I never said it would be inevitable. The whole point is that that it has happened more than once in the past fifty years and companies with a big responsibility like Google should think about and act on these issues, especially when they link themselves to organizations like the US Holocaust Memorial Museum!
Over the past few years they have done the exact opposite and these are not conspiracy theories or Google bashing but just plain facts:
- Collect your data without permission, not even opt out! and use a permanent cookie that expires in 2038
- Log every click you make on any website via the Google tool bar
- Link hits on Google analytics scripts to your ID (via the cookie)
- Censor information on behalf of various governments, including the US
- Censor independent news sources
- Not make any statements about which data they collect or what they do with it
If a local law would force Google to hand over the data of people I am confident that they will. You are confident that it they wont't, which from my point of view is naive. It's the difference between the real world and the Truman Show.

Re:well..
We did.
As per the post here : http://melbourne.indymedia.org/news/2007/02/141093 .php
it was replaced with :
"You might not know this, but mining is having devastating impacts on communities and the environment. Most mining in NSW is for coal. This is fuelling global climate change, which is critically endangering life on our planet. The NSW Minerals Council is now running a spin campaign to fool you into thinking that we need the coal mining industry. We invite you to dig a little deeper and find out the real facts."
Unfortunately this website has been forced to be taken down by the Axxs.org Collective due to Freehills lawyers for NSW Minerals Council using this piece of legislation :
http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/cth/consol_reg/ cr1969242/s20j.html
which effectively Axxs.org Collective has to comply too, regardless of the legitimacy of the claim of copyright infringement.
The site was a fair use critical review parody site of the NSW Mining propaganda campaign, and brought you facts regarding what was wrong with it.
The statements by the solicitors for the NSW Minerals Council does not explicitly state what exactly is copyright :
"Content in which our client owns copyright may be viewed on it's website, http://www.nswmining.com.au./ We ask that you compare our client's website to the offending websites referred to above. On comparison, you will see the copyright infringement issues that our client has with the abovementioned websites."
As the intended recipient of the email, we disclose this information, so that others can see how from our point of view, critical review is being attacked using this piece of legislation.
When asking what exactly was copyright on the phone by one of the collective members, so that we may take it down promptly, and fulfill our obligations, we were told, 'All of it', everything. It was pointed out the source code was totally different, and was told it was copyright to their client, even though elements of the pages, on the site itself, where pointed out as to who the images etc belonged too. This is a very interesting claim, that custom php code by one of our users, images by other parties, the colours, the lot, is the intellectual property of NSW Minerals Council. We have been forced to take the site down by this legislation, as the solicitors pointed out that according to it, we must act appropriately on reciept of such an email, or have failed to fulfill our legal responsibilities. Hence we have done so.
You do the math. -

Re:Portland OR Metro areaAlso one of Austin's reasons is listed as "Home to Whole Foods"
Portland is home to New Seasons (8 locations) a natural/organic store similar to Whole Foods. There are two Whole Foods stores in the Portland area as well as several Wild Oats Marketplaces.
That makes three large natural/organic grocery chains in the area!
And if you don't want to have to leave home to get your natural foods there are at least two competing home delivery companies, Organics to You and Pioneer Organics!
There's also several natural food Co-Ops such as the People's Food Co-op and Food Front cooperative grocery. Last year the People's Co-op successfully tested an opensource POS system.
Portland also is home to OHSU (Oregon Health and Science University) home to several major research departments.
Portland's Indymedia site (Independant Media Center; IMC) is a large independant media outlet and one of the oldest and largest in the indymedia network.

The right to bear cameras
I appreciate the privacy concerns that usually drive these discussions. This surveillance business is much to 1984 for my taste, but the reality is elsewhere, as illustrated in a recent report by the NYLCU (see http://nyc.indymedia.org/or/2006/12/80970.html. It reports that:
- There are an estimated 50,000 surveillance cameras in use in New York City today.
- The police currently operate/have direct access to less than 1% of those cameras. Indeed, they are proposing to expand the number of cameras to about 1% (from about 250 to about 500).
- The number of cameras has grown by more than an order of magnitude in just eight years, from around 2400 in 1998. The article includes a great map of the number of cameras that have been identified in just one neighborhood. The picture suggests that it simply isn't possible to walk down 125th Street in Manhattan without being continuously recorded by perhaps a dozen cameras at once.
The NYCLU report not only opposes the expansion of the number of police operated candidates. It proposes an "immediate moratorium on the installation of any and all new surveillance cameras in the city". I think this raises an important question. Don't I have a right to install a video surveillance camera in my window, if only so I can put a live view of the park outside my window on my computer screen? How dare these folks attack my right to bear cameras.

So if the for-profit company that takes money from your effort is not paying people, why would ANYONE send them juicy information, the best and most timely photos? (Other than corporate spin and marketing...) These suits do not understand human motivation at all. While many community/corporate models do work well - they work when the people who contribute significantly get something significant back for their participation in the community.
Stop letting your creativity be yoked by the merchants.
The only possible reason for people to upload is an individul's desire for the story/photo to get out - which puts even more bias on the distorted, biased coporate news process. Now everyone is "fighting" for what news is real - in an arena where people will always lose to the larger corporate profit motive.
Why wouldn't you send it to groups like Indymedia or other groups, collectives and nonprofits that have ideals more in line with the interests of individuals? Why wouldn't you post it to your own flickr account, craigslist, or make a blog post about it yourself? All these tools are available to anyone who can get the API working to upload it to Reuters, and work more in the individual's interest.
We no longer need merchants to control creative expression.
CNN launched a 'thing' like this too a while back (iReport, video)and it was laughed off the airwaves. They wanted you to "be the reporter!" and not pay you for your effort - while the whole time they make money off the ads your reports support. If people have a great story - post the video online with a site that allows you to share revenue from traffic, and includes real rewards for creating the content to those people who really create it. -
Nice trade
Rumsfeld is an accessory to Saddam's war crimes for selling him poison gas and sat maps which allowed Saddam to kill his people. Remember this photo that was taken around the time of the offences? http://la.indymedia.org/uploads/2003/02/rumsfeld-

And Gates is a old Iran Contra criminal. How many of these old Iran Contra criminals can fit in the White House anyway? -
I wouldn't count on it.

FBI's indymedia censorship
India, in most cases only blocks access to the alleged hate-speech sites within the country and they don't go after the site owners and make arrests. On one instance, the US FBI on the other hand even went to the extent of seizing the Rackspace servers of Independent Media Center(IMC) in the UK, on a request from Italian and swiss governments.

What's wrong with other extant examples?I'm assuming that you evaluated and rejected some of the other high-profile citizen journalism outfits that predate the founding of your own project. Off my head I can think of:
- The Indymedia network is one of the longest standing examples of an attempt to have a large citizen journalist network.
- The Pacifica Network (especially the Democracy Now show
- The New Standard

Re:... This week in the news...
okay, but what about this story? Two gay teenages hanged: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/4725
9 59.stm http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2005/07/321936.sh tml I think the evidence is quite genuine. -
this is already done - sonic crowd control truck
here's the first result from my 10 second web search... but those of us who've spent significant time protesting on the streets have had some very close looks at the sonic weapons developed for use in other parts of the world.
oh wait, here's a photo. -
Re:Schwarnazi??
"I admired Hitler, for instance, because he came from being a little man with almost no formal education, up to power. I admire him for being such a good public speaker and for what he did with it." - Arnold Schwarznazi
What's offensive, Schwarznazi telling people he admires Hitler, or me telling you he admires Hitler? If you're offended by the truth, it's you who needs to change. -
Indymedia was censored by the US
In 2004, servers hosting several indymedia (http://www.indymedia.org) sites were seized by order of the FBI. Some links:

No one is free anymore, especially after 9-11. Civil liberties and rights are being taken off in the name of the fight against a terrorism that is build up by many interested parts... -
Re:And a little more.....
However, Gore did not purchase the shares
Trueand did not have control over the estate with which to sell them.
I doubt it. That is what being an executor means.... Of course, if you are correct, that leaves some mighty big questions, such as: how did the shares get sold, and who did it, and if it wasn't Al Gore, then why were they in his tax filings? Here's a site with some answers: http://colorado.indymedia.org/newswire/display/27
As for the other claims, I'm not claiming Gore is perfect. I wouldn't be surprised if his campaign accepted contributions from less-than-savory groups.5 /index.php Short answer: "Al Gore is the executor and recipient of a trust which has holdings in Occidental Petroleum..." The key word there is "trust". That means he has no control over what they buy or sell. -
Having dived with dolphins in exotic places
I am reminded of the counter argument which noted that the enlarged part observed in Einstein's brain was due to the extra glia cells needed to support the higher activity of the same number of neurons.
I've also dived with many varieties of fish, but our interaction with dolphins off Tiputa Pass and Trousers Point (you can find both easily on Google) was qualitatively different from any with fish.
It basically sounds like Japanese propaganda to me. Might be time to make that donation to Sea Shepherd. -
Several Informative Pertinent Videos.
It's an unpleasant topic, and you may not WANT to believe it, but that doesn't alter the facts surrounding the issue.
And there are several straw men already leaned up against my initial post:
Yes terrorism is real an Israel, where they have been oppressing muslims for decades. How does that change the facts surrounding both 9/11 AND 7/7?
Adding your personal opinion (especially your uninformed personal opinion) based on the validity of my mental processes (Hitler's brain, etc.) is ludicrous. Please refute the facts surrounding the topic and stop trolling.
