Problem is poor judgement, although data retention
This is IH from isohunt.com. I've went through this same process with our lawsuit brought by the MPAA so I thought I'll share some of my thoughts on the issue.
As unreasonable as I think these lawsuits by Viacom/MPAA may be, in order for the legal process to work, plaintiffs are entitled to evidence in order to prove their case. However, user privacy should be a large concern in disclosing of data (logs) as evidence, and in neither Youtube's or our case, there's no reason for turning over data that would expose your personal identify (such as your IP address). From glancing the order against Youtube, the reason they were ordered to turn over user histories is to prove user infringements, and inclusion of IP's in such logs is to uniquely identify users who may have signed up multiple usernames/accounts. I call bullshit on that. If someone uses multiple usernames, he can as easily login with multiple IP addresses, disclosing IP's would not help the plaintiffs in proving copyright infringements. I expect Google/Youtube to appeal the order (at least I sure hope so).
As for us, we successfully argued in our MPAA case that we don't need to turn over your IP addresses as it is a violation of user privacy with no evidentiary value, and only turned over
.torrent access logs in anonymized form. You may not like to hear that .torrent logs are being turned over, but the truth is we were ordered to do so and that the MPAA does need anonymous logs to prove their frivolous lawsuit. -

I've liked some of Bioware's earlier releases, but I guess I'll just keep on waiting for Mass Effect, till they come to their senses.

Great game, unfortunate DRM scheme. Blame EA. -

Woops, my bad... it's hosted on ISOHunt, but not a torrent. ISOHunt is blocked at my work, as are any torrents, so when it came up with the warning screen, I assumed it was a torrent, being ISOHunt after all. http://mozilla.isohunt.com/firefox/releases/3.0/win32/en-US/Firefox Setup 3.0.exe

Re:Future News, MPAA raids isoHunt
That'd not be a good idea on their part. isoHunt is hosted in Toronto right now, and Gary's a Canadian citizen that'd battle it out in a Canadian court(possibly while relocating to another country). We also comply with DMCA takedown notices(even though we don't have to) - assuming they follow our copyright policy - and current legal proceedings in California aren't going as planned for them.

Re:How ironic...
BitTorrent is the way to go. There are already lots of good torrents out there giving you access to both the Dutch and English versions of the videos in no time.
For example, this torrent works for me and I even have spare capacity for seeding:

I had never heard of these drivers before creative got all dumb fuck on them. Fortunately, they have just shot themselves in the foot and now everybody will here about them and get them from other locations. Here is a torrent of the Daniel_k Drivers: http://isohunt.com/release/122458

Re:MechanicalUniverse + Project Mathematics+ Alice
I found the animations in The Mechanical Universe quite elucidative. It's also just a really great series. I've recommended it to many people, including a Mathematics teacher. There are also torrents of the first and second halves available (the quality is pretty low, as these are stream rips). I've never heard of Project Mathematics, but I will definitely check it out. Thanks!

Monsanto is not your friend
For an interesting look at the Monsanto history, GM foods, gene patenting, risks and impact across North America, I recommend you watch the documentary "The Future of Food" (torrent).
Description:
THE FUTURE OF FOOD offers an in-depth investigation into the disturbing truth behind the unlabeled, patented, genetically engineered foods that have quietly filled U.S. grocery store shelves for the past decade.
From the prairies of Saskatchewan, Canada to the fields of Oaxaca, Mexico, this film gives a voice to farmers whose lives and livelihoods have been negatively impacted by this new technology. The health implications, government policies and push towards globalization are all part of the reason why many people are alarmed by the introduction of genetically altered crops into our food supply.
Shot on location in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, THE FUTURE OF FOOD examines the complex web of market and political forces that are changing what we eat as huge multinational corporations seek to control the world's food system. The film also explores alternatives to large-scale industrial agriculture, placing organic and sustainable agriculture as real solutions to the farm crisis today.

Re:from the article:
I'd rather pay the actual artists then the record labels who get most of the money. Download the music and if you like it, buy the album, go to a concert or buy some other stuff from them. Or better yet, download the songs you like off of iTunes, so the musicians actually get the money. http://isohunt.com/ has been attacked by MPAA/RIAA for a while. They have no problem working with the MPAA/RIAA so that the artists get money. However, they refuse to work with them because they (and the record labels) won't make as much money off of it. I'm not saying piracy is right, but the whole thing is screwed now because the other side is greedy.

Re: storing the balance
IH speaks! "Can't stop what Napster started."
Ya, a copyright infringement website defends copyright infringement. Who'd've thought. also, this lesson has been learned before.
Besides, I AM an artist. If I were signed with a label/distribution company/other organ, I would make >10 per unit sold. I much prefer that people burn or download my album, then buy me a beer. I get more out of it that way.
Also, 15,010 angry nerds can't be wrong. http://consumerist.com/consumer/worst-company-in-a merica/riaa-wins-worst-company-in-america-2007-245 235.php
[/rebuttal] Okay, fair point, the RIAA are just doing their job. We'll disregard for the moment it's a job that doesn't need to be done. In this case, the only thing the RIAA are guilty of is boundless enthusiasm. Unfortunately, the low-income single mothers on the receiving end of the lawsuits don't see it that way.
Okay, I've lost the thread of my argument, so I'm just going to say what I originally intended to say.
Clearchannel.
Money talks. Independent labels can't afford to get music on the radio in America, because they don't have the resource to buy the airtime or lobby the execs. The internet is their only hope. The RIAA, as far as I can work out, is accidentally crushing independent artists while they're going after the roaches. So, sure. Blame the RIAA-haters for depriving artists who already have record labels, have a valid form of income. I'll keep blaming the RIAA for keeping the little guy down with its' clumsy antics. -

Re:Gee.
I wonder if the new DRM's been successful at keeping those movies off the torrent sites. Because if the article's to be believed, it's certainly been successful at pissing off paying customers, and what would be the point of doing that if the movies were still being pirated anyway?

I feel for you man... but I've recently signed with a couple of online movie stores once called http://thepiratebay.com/ and the other called http://isohunt.com./ Both of these stores are fantastic, not only was the sign up free but I can download all of their movies for free also! Choices? often I can decide if I want the high quality DVD version or a small version they seem to call a "Rip". They also don't have any DRM and I'm free to put it on my phone or iPod if I choose. Re:Good.
Religion is nothing more than a social control mechanism. I agree it's unfortunate that an unintended side-effect of this control mechanism is the public opposition to technologies which happen to disagree with the invented 'rules' set down by a particular religion.

cms gvideo youtube and torrents
If you are looking for tips on site design or a CMS, I don't have any. You can choose whichever popular (probably PHP based) CMS you are familiar with or whichever one's style appeals to you.
As for video hosting, I think the Internet Archive is a good start. However, they have been known to censor videos in the past, so you might want to have on site backups that you could quickly switch to. I would also recommend google video because of it's searchability, support for many video formats, and lack of a file size limit. Don't use youtube. Youtube doesn't support many media formats, has ads, and forces you to split up your video into tens of little clips. It's impossible to watch a feature length documentary on youtube. Youtube got popular because it appealed to kids on myspace with ADD who enjoyed watching ten second clips of people getting kicked in the nuts (although there is some useful content if you wade through the crap). The Internet Archive or google video is a much better choice for a serious, hour+ long project.
You might also want to host a torrent and post links to it on a few of the popular torrent search sites. The big name sites like http://isohunt.com/ and http://thepiratebay.org/ are good. A socio-politically oriented torrent site like http://www.chomskytorrents.org/ might obtain viewers for you as well. -
Re:"CD quality programming"
I was on the bandwagon and all reared up ready to get Sirius at the beginning of the year for the sole purpose of listening to Stern. Sadly, Sirius (and probably Howard in particular) was unwilling at the time to embrace Internet broadcasts. Rumor has it, Stern was paranoid that people would steal his show and rebroadcast it so that he wouldn't get as much money. My commute into work is 7 minutes long, and I wasn't willing to pay for a subscription to listen to 7 minutes a day. Sure, I could've probably purchased additional receivers and listened in my office, or a boom box, but honestly, that's hundreds of dollars in outlay, not to mention a PITA to set up, just to listen to something that makes me chuckle every few minutes. Had Internet streaming been available, I would have not only subscribed to Sirius, but probably paid a few bucks extra to get Internet streaming so I could listen at home and at work without having to hook up a bunch of extra hardware.
Now it's 10 months later, and frankly, I'm over Stern. I didn't think I could live without listening to his show, but due to his and his company's paranoia, I was forced to. Now, I have no desire to subscribe to Sirius. I started listening to the show that replaced his, and while not as funny as Stern, it's funny enough. I can listen over the Internet, in my car, and from my regular stereo at home.
Lesson that they should have learned: strike while the iron's hot. I would have subscribed back then, and I'd still be a subscriber. I'm sure I'm not alone. There's absolutely no justifiable reason to have not put streaming in place 10 months ago. Hell, they were already doing it with their music channels. It's not like they didn't have the technology already. Plus, they can DRM the hell out of those streams, making it practically impossible to save the digital stream. Sure, someone could've ran their line out into their line in and recorded the show and put it up on BitTorrent, but they could do that with any of the regular Sirius equipment just as easily. I suppose that's what you get when your business people don't listen to your technology people. -

isoHunt / Mininova
In my opinion the best site for new releases is isoHunt. There are no fake files on isoHunt and isoHunt torrents usually have many reliable trackers cross-referenced from BitTorrent sites across the internet.
For older files Mininova is the best. It has almost 150000 files. Everyone can upload, but there are good moderators who remove fake files. The site has a very fast, CSS-based layout without HTML tables.
I don't use private sites, because it's very hard to have a high ratio on those sites if you don't download 0-day releases. On public sites I have a 1.0-1.1 ratio after 3 hours of seeding. It's impossible on private sites because there are 8 times more seeders than leechers.
