Re:You want this to be interesting...
Of course at the same time, we need to have "Come home to Moses" talk with Israel about changing their stance to one of causing peace in the Middle East instead of undermining it.
Seriously? You blame Israel for the lack of peace in the Middle East? The amount of provocation from the Palestinians that you are ignoring is staggering.
There are so many brilliant Israeli people, who want an end to hostility, and are more than willing to work out coexistence. The ongoing growth of illegal settlements only destroy options and nail the future to rails that lead to inevitable violence and ultimately the genocide of Palestine. Certainly there must be a better answer.
How about if the Palestinians stop firing rockets and mortars at Israeli civilians almost every day? That might help peace. How about if the Palestinians stop murdering children in their own homes and then celebrating the murderers? That might help peace.
The Palestinians were shown the route to peace, the route that would have stopped the settlements, the route to their own state. They have so far chosen not to take it. -

I am dismayed at Israels constant call for war against Iran when it will be Americans fighting the war not the IDF, I wonder how much war rhetoric they would be spouting if the US didn't back them up.

Re:Peh.
Islamic terrorists are by far the most common sort in the modern world
Most terrorist acts in Europe are still carried out by Christian Europeans, like the Catalonian separatists in Spain, or the Catholic separatists on Northern Ireland. The most recent major act of terrorism, Anders Breivik's bombing of the Norwegian parliament with 8 dead and subsequent shooting of another 77 people, was...
...on the 22nd of July. Five months ago.
The most recent incident of Islamic terrorism was today:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/afghanistan/8931171/Suicide-bomb-attack-on-Afghan-Nato-base.html
http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/lebanese-media-idf-bombed-espionage-devices-uncovered-by-hezbollah-1.399257
...and yesterday:
http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/343369/bomb-gunmen-kill-18-iraq-marks-us-withdrawal
...and the day before:
http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/somali-soldiers-killed-suicide-bomb-attack-15054747
...and the day before that:
http://www.jpost.com/Defense/Article.aspx?id=247407
There were probably more, but that was just a cursory search. I could go back further - but the point is the word "common" in my statement. By far the vast majority of attacks are committed by islamic terrorists. Do other terrorists exist? Sure. ...but they're not committing attacks every day. -
Re:Should the researchers keep quiet?
It's not exactly a secret that Mossad and the IDF were the chief suspects in the creation of Stuxnet. They were even publicizing their new cyber-warfare IDF division not too long before Stuxnet emerged. So I doubt Israel considers this a big secret. In fact, they may well want to publicize the "Threaten us and we can blow up your centrifuges" message it sends.

Turning the tables with lawfare
Is a bunch of young Israeli lawyers working round the clock sustained only by Diet Coke, falafel and cigarettes about to pull off the legal equivalent of the Six-Day War? A really good link which you should read. Here is another.
The Israelis have learned from the last flotilla, and hacked international law to serve their ends. The law firm Shurat HaDin (motto: "Bankrupting Terrorism - One Lawsuit at a Time") has done a bang-up job worthy of admiration, even if you're one of those people who thinks (like Hamas, the recipient of the aid flotilla) that Israel has no right to exist. I really recommend reading the link above, it does a great job of laying out what exactly has been done. They wrote letters to the insurers of the boat, warning them that under international law they would be legally liable for the consequences of helping Hamas. They informed INMARSAT that continuing their service exposed the company to liability. And, most hilariously, the legendary Greek bureaucracy has helped tremendously. Once a complaint is filed and an investigation started, the Greeks aren't exactly known for efficiency. American government is a model of speed compared to this.
Some more interesting facts: there is no pressing need for the aid flotilla. The last convoy actually succeeded in making the Israelis open up land borders and things are super in Gaza now. If the goal was to actually deliver aid, then the flotilla could dock in Egypt and have the goods delivered overland, permission has already been granted. Of course, this offer was refused because that's not the goal of the flotilla. It exists only to remove Israel's legitimacy as an entity (in other words, the same goal as Hamas). Yeah, yeah, right, you don't believe me. OK, how about what Adam Shapiro, co-founder of the International Solidarity Movement and a board member of the Free Gaza Movement said at a speech at Rutgers (to enormous applause, by the way)
Free Gaza is but one tactic of a larger strategy, to transform this conflict from one between Israel and the Palestinians, or Israel and the Arab world...to one between the rest of the world and Israel.
Nobody in the Free Gaza movement gives a shit about being a delivery boy for rice and cooking oil. Journalists should really listen when organizations state their goals in public, but who gives a shit when the facts don't fit the narrative.

Re:Israel has a lot more high tech than you expect
That is a giant myopic self-serving load of unbelievably biased crap. You sound like one of those who believe the only land the Israelis deserve is below ground. Let's look at your arguments:
"occupy a people"- who are they occupying? The palestinians have their own government(s), as usual selected by violence. In Israel, where many 'palestinians' live comfortably and peacefully, there are palestinians elected to office- where else in the middle east can you find that (with a real election)? I'll check back for your answer.
"deny their rights"- The Israelis don't care wtf they do in the palestinian territories, as long as it doesn't involve shooting at Israel. If they shoot at Israel, Israel will shoot back, duh. There are terrible abuses taking place in the palestinian territories, but they're being done by Fatah and Hamas. Complain about that for once if you want to sound credible.
"imprison them arbitrarily, starve them, terrorize them"- see above.
"steal their water"- wtf are you talking about? IIRC, fresh water flows into Israel from Syria or Jordan, and they basicly dump raw sewage and chemical waste just before it crosses the border. Is that ever mentioned, or is it not a problem because it's happening to Israel?
"and land"- If the palestinians would stop shelling civilian areas, stop trying to blow up school buses, and stop sending terrorists over to
murder children and pregnant women and then gloat about it (see the article about murdering children again, no seriously) then Israel wouldn't feel the need to have a buffer zone. If none of that happened and Israel took land then you would have a right to complain.
"deny them entry to their own country if they visit medical resources outside of occupied territories"- Reference please, sounds like BS unless they're on a terrorist list. Not that the 'medical resources' was probably a free clinic or hospital in Israel. The rest of the arguments in that paragraph are just crap in that they're thoroughly discredited or outright false. One other point- you keep portraying Israel as the aggressor, and the poor palestinians as the ultimate victims. Do you know that part of the charter of Hamas is to destroy Israel, killing every Israeli man, woman, and child in the process? Admittedly Israel is not perfect, but how can you solely blame them for the continuing violence with a straight face? You say you would defend Sweden, and rightfully so. But if Norway were to start launching artillery into Sweden, and declared they wanted to murder all Swedes, would you just stand at the border and give them the finger? If Denmark decided they wanted Malmo and sent in terrorists to murder women and children who lived nearby, would you just sit there wishing they would stop? Think about how you would react, and how Israel has reacted to a very similar situation. Are you still going to be as critical?

Re:makes sense
All of this does not matter to the question of artists canceling appearances. If an artist does not want to appear in Israel, that's fine. An artists who cancels is being suckered into making a political statement under the guise/threat of avoiding making one.
More so than other artists that cancelled, I think Gil-Scott Heron would have delivered strong messages in his performance. As much as any performer I can think of, he has a long history of fighting racism. I'm not sure Santana and Elvis Costello would have delivered significant messages in their music had they not cancelled.
It's unfortunate that Gil-Scott Heron won't be around to perform either for the troops or general public there at some future date.
I can appreciate that the rest of the world may underestimate how difficult some policy decisions can be when we mostly lack diverse and in depth news sources. (showing more violence isn't showing more depth) I think it would be to Israels advantage to make LBA and/or other English language broadcasters more widely available (direct streaming, livestation etc.) While some internal political conflict and problems may seem an embarrassing thing to show internationally, those who have seen conflicts between political parties and groups elsewhere might at least be a little more sympathetic to the political pressure (suicide?) that sometimes cripples major policy changes.
The high level of activity in the middle-east is motivated more people to try and look a little deeper than the 'short on facts, long on pundit posturing' coverage we're mostly handed.
There are some serious issues that should at least be discussed widely. Failure to do so erodes credibility. Even friends question friends.

Re:No Time to Worry!
The US is the only one allowed to use this tech to abuse human rights, and it really doesn't want to risk losing its lead in technology used for spying on citizens.
You are completely wrong. First off, it's legal, and not an abuse of human rights. (And no, this isn't the first time a court has made a similar finding.)
Second, it's necessary because some American citizens, immigrants, and visitors don't want to live in peace, but have taken up the cause of extremists. (Just a sample - there are many, many more.)

If you bother to read bin Laden's 'letter to America', you will see that in order for him to call off his minions, Americans will have to convert to his flavor of Islam, give up the constitution, implement Sharia law (which will mean cutting off hands of thieves, stoning adulterers, no more alcohol (prohibition again), drugs, porn, executing homosexuals, etc., etc., etc.), and many other odious demands.
Ultimately this is about various factions of Islam trying to extend their power by force. It won't go away soon. I suggest you get used to it.
By the way - the Muslim Brotherhood is not helping.

Re:3 Suspects
The problem with Wikipedia in respect to 1990 is actually fairly clear; to most Wikipedians, "if it's not on the web it doesn't exist." Their faulty, backwards "reliable sources" sections have left them ignoring, or sometimes destroying, records painstakingly crafted on the history of various industries in which much of the documentation is not found in newspapers, but in archives like USENet and inter-BBS communication.
Here's a great example of where wikipedia screwed up in covering and handling the topic of content management systems.
Or where obvious POV-pushing is not just tolerated by Wikipedia, but actively supported by Wikipedia insiders: Tellingly, it was later revealed that one of the Wikipedia editors who led the attack is actually an employee of Electronic Intifada.
And then there's what they do to actual researchers who try to contribute.
Understand the problem yet?

Really? We're all going to fall for this?
Come on! Is EVERYBODY asleep today? The spy rings are not a fantasy; they're documented right out there in the open. The blackmail via child prostitution rings in Washington are not a fantasy; they're documented right out there in the open. The Zionist machinations to manipulate the U.S. and the world to achieve their own ends are not a fantasy; TONS of that shit is right out there in the open, documented. Just because it's done at a whisper doesn't make it not there. Just because the term, "Sayanem" has been scrubbed from Wikipedia doesn't make it not there.
For goodness sake. The Israeli press even says it right out loud:
As always, it is profitable to apply the age-old wisdom of asking; "Who Benefits?"
Wikileaks is Israel.
There is a TON of information available on this subject, but you are not going to hear it on your TV. The article below summed it up before it happened. . .

Re:Isn't freedom great?
I don't know what you mean by "gay pride" - if you mean gay pride parades, they weren't banned and aren't banned. There was a controversy about having the parade specifically in Jerusalem, because of its special status and big religious community there (imagine gay pride parade in Vatican), but at the end it still happened. Some people were extremely pissed off, there were protests etc., but no "banning".

Re:Uber-silly
I don't think your ambulatory computers will ever be clever enough to figure out those situations.
Never say never. It's just a matter of time. Even if some situations are hard to automate, a large percentage of all driving hours (freeway driving, I would think) could be automated much more easily.
The motivation to reclaim driving time is huge. People spend / waste a fantastic amount of time driving. I couldn't find global figures, but apparently Americans spend over 100 hours per year commuting (not driving in total - just commuting); the total driving figure in Israel is 577 hours per year; and about 40% of mothers in the US spend over 2 hours per day driving. Then there are truck drivers and delivery workers whose annual total must be closer to a couple thousand hours per year (i.e. basically their whole life).
Dishwashing machines are very popular, and how much time do they actually save, 20 minutes per day? I can't think of anything the average person more, that could be automated as easily, as driving.

Re:meanwhile, in the free capitalist Europe/USA
Apparently so. Allow me to refresh your memory:
Your post confirmed my assertion.
Swastikas and perfectly legal in all but one nation,
Read. Read again. Read harder. You are wrong. While every single European country allows the swastika (or any Nazi propaganda) to be displayed for "educational" purposes by some definition or another, there are several countries which ban the swastika (or any Nazi propaganda) when there's the remotest possibility that it is being used to indicate the artist's/author's/speaker's support of Nazism.
Porn is completely legal in all first-world nations,
You have no idea what you're talking about. Ignoring child porn, there are many forms of consensual porn banned throughout the Western world. In the UK, the Criminal Justice Act 2008 bans all sorts of S&M. The Coroners and Justice Act 2009 makes it illegal to make a sexually explicit drawing (as opposed to a pseudo-photograph, which was already illegal) suggesting involvement of a human under 18.
the Terrorism Act of 2006 has nothing to do with the US,
I'm sorry, are we only allowed to talk about the US? There's so much coverage here of unreasonable laws passed by the US over the last decade I thought I'd pick somewhere else.
and assange - despite being an asshat whom I'd personally love to see in a pine box
Death as a punishment for speech? Are there any dictators you particularly admire, or do you go more on the uniform?
is alive and well and not facing any sort of sanctions
A country governed by rule of law rather than rule of men would have either shut up or issued a warrant detailing precisely what crimes it accuses Assange of. Instead it's issued warnings, threats, sabre-rattling and open "we're cowards, please share some of the burden of our unjustifiable action" letters to its allies to request cooperation on imposing criminal sanctions against Assange.
To round off, I hereby accuse Obama of raping me. What's that, all important news about Obama isn't being drowned out by my accusation?

Re:US bullying and demanding other countries..
Profiling is a lot more effective than you think. Case in point:
http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1261364564590&pagename=JPArticle%2FShowFull
"People think that profiling is old fashioned and invasive, but it saves the day," said Pini Schiff, who served for close to 30 years in the Ben-Gurion security division. "The Nigerian terrorist would have undergone comprehensive inspections at Ben-Gurion Airport, and without a doubt I can tell you that the explosives he was carrying would have been discovered."
Schiff's proof is the Hindawi affair. On April 17, 1986, a pregnant Irishwoman, Anne-Marie Murphy, arrived at Heathrow Airport with a large bag to catch El Al flight 016 to Tel Aviv. Her bag, Schiff said, had been checked by British airport security and passed, but during the standard questioning, the El Al security guard decided to check it once more.
"Her answers to our questions just didn't add up," Schiff recalled.
A second inspection of the bag discovered a sophisticated bomb made up of Semtex plastic explosives with a detonator hidden inside a calculator that was set to activate when the plane reached a cruising attitude of 39,000 feet. During her subsequent interrogation, Murphy spoke about her Jordanian boyfriend, Nizar Hindawi, who, together with the Syrian Embassy in London, it turned out, had planned the attack. Murphy, who was carrying Hindawi's child, was entirely unaware that he had been sending her to her death.

Re:declining oil production
How can you say these things with a clear conscience? You're either misinformed or attempting to pull off one helluva a bald faced lie!
By not being a Muslim, Iranian, Jew, American, etc. I consider myself pretty impartial so it is possible for me to step over your sensitive toes.
Oh really? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hezbollah_of_Iran [wikipedia.org] - "The Hezbollah, or Party of God, (also HizbAllah or Hizbullah) is an Iranian movement formed at the time of the Iranian Revolution to assist the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and his forces in consolidating power."
And where the hell is your conscience when the first sentence of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hezbollah_of_Iran states:
"For the Islamist Shia Lebanese militia/political party/social services provider, see Hezbollah."
Yep, that's right - they are different!
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/18/world/africa/18iht-iran.2232363.html [nytimes.com] - "On Tuesday, Iran's rhetorical threats against Israel and its unswerving embrace of Hezbollah continued."
You could have quoted an article from 2009 to show that it is just a rhetoric from its unpopular regime - a part of "west is bad" - which is what I was saying. There is no proof of *actual* support of Iranian regime to Hezbollah. Iran is predominantly Shia while rest of the Arab is predominantly Sunni, and they both think the other one is a "kafir". Here, for example: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8149014.stm
"Iran has executed 13 members of a Sunni rebel group blamed for a spate of attacks in the south-east of the country, Iran's state news agency says."
I could produce a citation for myself from Economist, but unfortunately I am not a subscriber and cannot access archived articles. But that's ok, facts are not important.http://www.iranfocus.com/en/terrorism/exclusive-terrorist-training-camps-in-iran-05956.html [iranfocus.com] - London, Feb. 27 – Iran Focus has obtained a list of 20 terrorist camps and centres run by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).
You mean this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_Focus
"Critics state that the website is one of the web outlets of the MKO, a group identified as a terrorist organization by USA, Canada and European Union. Some say that the MKO uses Iranfocus.com, Iranterror.com and other websites to advocate its position, rather than present objective and accurate news reports.[2][3]"This is why I wrote non-American. Guess I should have written non-British, non-Israeli and non-Iranian too. The increased rhetoric against Iran since 2006 has been much discussed over rest of the Europe. This article http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?c=JPArticle&cid=1170359771711&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull in 2007 shows Hezbollah leader admitting Iranian support. But this was also found out to be just chest-thumping with no facts.
But who needs facts when you have a nuclear bomb. And btw, I am Hindu, and have lived through bomb attacks in my home city - unlike most Americans. One such bomb was blasted in Mumbai last year by terrorists trained in "nuclear power" Pakistan.

Re:Patent?
This sort of thing should probably be done by academia or government then. Progress for the greater good doesn't have to be commercially driven.
But it does have to be adequately funded.
Here is an example of a small scale project that has the potential to reap significant benefits. But it still costs $5 million - and there are hundreds - and more likely thousands - of projects no less deserving.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded a $5 million research grant to a Hebrew University of Jerusalem biologist to find ways to combat visceral leishmanisis, a parasitic disease that affects 500,000 annually and, if left untreated - by 30 days of intramuscular injections - kills 95 percent of its victims.
Co-infection with HIV makes treatment much more complex. Because the immune system is suppressed in HIV-positive patients, Kala-azar relapses are common, and patients have to be treated multiple times. Given the difficulties of treating large populations in remote areas and the bleak prospects for patients infected by both diseases, efforts must be made to protect people living in HIV/AIDS-endemic areas from contracting Kala-aza HU researcher granted $5m. from Gates Foundation to battle parasitic disease
The charitable impulse is not unlimited. The university has to strike a balance between research and teaching. The government needs a broad political consensus to move decisively in any direction.
There is something to be said for the guy who is in it for the money.
Someone who can move quickly but still think long-term and can take very big risks without flinching.

LOL, I knew you would give a response like that... that's why I put "*wink*" there.
If you want to get into FACTUAL and CREDIBLE sources, since the letter didn't actually come from Stormfront (they just had a copy of it and I posted their link *LOL*). Actually, I never knew what Stormfront was nor heard of the site until 'I was hunted down' for being neither pro-Israel nor pro-Iran!

Do I need to post more to show you how easy it would have been to google it before you accuse me of such 'lost all factual and moral credibility'??? Sheesh, I could have posted a link to a different site than Stormfront, but it wouldn't be as *cough* funny!

His blind hatred of Israel causes him to deny extremely well documented history. People like him and others who fly airplanes into buildings and blow themselves up, will have no qualms using nuclear weaponry on Israel and any nations who support them.
However, there is one vital element that the enemies of Israel forget. That is the promise of Jehovah God, thousands of years ago, that after being scattered all over the earth, the Jews would once again be a nation that will never again be dispersed or destroyed. The first part of that was fulfilled in 1948 when the state of Israel was re-created in the land of their ancestors. It was also foretold thousands of years ago, that Jerusalem would be once again the capital city of Israel and that this fact would be a stumbling stone and a rock of offense to the entire world, especially the surrounding nations. That was fulfilled in 1967.
The second part, concerning the enduring destiny of Israel will also be fulfilled, despite the hateful ramblings of their enemies.

If you will read this article and others, you would quickly get the idea that this man is a radical Muslim and hates Israel with a passion. People willing to fly airplanes into buildings or otherwise blow themselves up, would not hesitate for one nano-second to use weapons of mass destruction such as nuclear bombs on people they hate. If he or any man who expresses such sentiments again and again should get a hold of nuclear weaponry and the means to deliver them to Israel, he will likely use them to do what he has repeatedly expressed: to wipe Israel off the map.
He also denies that the Holocaust took place. From the quote of the article referenced below:
"The first question is that assuming the Holocaust did happen, where did it exactly happen and who were the perpetrators?..."

Re:Why so little outcry vs Israel?
The question wasn't whether there was an illegal organ trade in Israel. There is an illegal organ trade in quite a few countries - I've heard of it existing in parts of Africa including South Africa, as well as being fairly widespread in India. Israel has actually prosecuted people for it, however (the article you reference is here and it describes the prosecution of some people involved in this).
There is a big gap however from saying there has been a trade in organs in a country to saying that the country's government or military actually are killing people *in order to* harvest their organs (a claim I have seen in this thread). It's almost as big a gap to saying that the government or military are harvesting organs of people who happen to have died or been mortally wounded in conflict in order to profit.
I don't really believe the amount of money involved would be sufficient for a government or military to take this sort of risk to their reputation to do something like this. The Israeli military budget is over $13B US.
What some unscrupulous individuals may have done to line their pockets, however, is another story. As an American Jew, I actually think any legitimate claims that organs were illegally harvested in Israel should be investigated and any perpetrators prosecuted. If somebody illegally harvested organs from a dead/mortally wounded person, they should go to jail. If somebody actually killed somebody to harvest their organs, they should be imprisoned for the rest of their life.

Re:Flamebait SummaryIsrael regularly blockades Gaza ports, so the statement is true...
(IsraelNN.com) The Israeli Navy Monday morning blocked a Libyan ship trying to challenge Israeli sovereignty over Gaza coastal waters by landing at Gaza with 3,000 tons of food and medicine. The Foreign Ministry confirmed that it stopped the ship around dawn and that no force was necessary. "The Navy warned the ship that it was approaching prohibited waters and it decided to turn back," Foreign Ministry spokesman Yossi Levi said.
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/128625
In late August, two boats arrived in Gaza despite Israeli threats to stop them. Israeli Foreign Ministry officials said at the time that there had been a last-minute decision to let the boats through to avoid a public relations debacle at sea, and not to play into the hands of people they described as provocateurs. This time, too, Israeli officials had stated that the boat would not be allowed to reach Gaza, and that the Free Gaza trips would not become routine. Yet the boat was allowed to proceed without hindrance once again. "It was decided at the highest levels to allow them to enter," said Yigal Palmor, an Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman, without further explanation.

Re:Please stay on topicWhat claim was that? That residents of Sderot were forming terrorist groups? They are. Here's former NY mayor Ed Koch: http://cgis.jpost.com/Blogs/koch/entry/israel
Ed Koch is making a suggestion: there's no evidence that any of that's been implemented, or indeed, that Arabs were driven out of Israel by any sort of "ethnic cleansing".
...Both sides rejected the partion plan...The 1947 UN partition plan was accepted by the vast majority of Jewish organizations and rejected by the Arab side. Look, now you're just lying, which is (sadly) a favorite tactic of anti-Semites, along with making shit up and throwing around code words like "Zionist".
-
Re:Please stay on topicYou were the first to make racist claims: you should be first to give reliable evidence. What claim was that? That residents of Sderot were forming terrorist groups? They are. Here's former NY mayor Ed Koch: http://cgis.jpost.com/Blogs/koch/entry/israel Many of them did hate the Jews: anti-Semitism has always been popular and was perpetuated among the Arab population during the 1940's by certain elements siding with various sides in the Second World War.
... Many more simply did not want to get in the way of the Arab states who invaded the region, and many more did it out of self-interest: the belief that if they evacuated during the war, the Arab states would let them return, take back their own homes and property, and take back the homes and property of their Jewish neighbors as well. Pure greed. Again, EVIDENCE. Where is a single document, recording, or eyewitness account from an Arab that supports any of this?
Zionists constantly promote this racist lie to justify their treatment of Arabs. They are filled with absurd anti-Arab propaganda, like claiming the Arabs were Nazis who helped execute Jews despite the fact the Palestinians and most Arabs fought on the side of the Allies in WWII and had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the Holocaust. Or that Arabs wanted to greedily steal "Jewish land", which is an absurd claim to make when it was the Zionist militias driving them out and stealing THEIR land.
Even the whole notion of the "war" is a little off. Both sides rejected the partion plan, but the Zionists chose to respond by unilaterally invading and and attacking Arab villages. -
I have a workable solution
The U.S. has a system that works pretty well in this kind of situation: The Phalanx CIWS, or the C-RAM system (very similar).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counter-RAM
I won't say anything about its specifics, but I can tell you that it DOES work. It IS loud and you WILL crap your pants every time it goes off without warning, but that's a small price to pay for a WORKING product that shoots mortars and rockets out of the sky. This would be the perfect solution to their problem and frankly I'm surprised that I haven't heard more about it. Ah, I just answered my own question from my wiki link- it looks like they are in fact looking into these. Good for them.

Re:Who do I cheer for?
Please do not be too quick to judge nor to summarily dismiss differing hypotheses to the Global Warming Hypothesis
-We do not have enough long-term and statistically significant data to irrefutably prove the emerging Theory of (AKA still a 'Hypothesis') of "Global Warming".
I agree there has been some warming of at least short-term, however, looking at ice cores and other scientifically determined climatic evidence from the fossil records, it has been quite a bit warmer than it is today. (And mankind was *nowhere around* to "liberate" captured CO2 to cause that 'Global Warming".)
I agree CO2 can become a problem involving surface temperatures, but the average global surface temperatures are the results of much larger cycles with time huge time frames (and sometime small timeframes in the cases of massive Volcanoes and large Meteorites, etc..) These time frames humans are only now beginning to understand.
NOTE: CO2 is actually rather insignificant compared to the sunspot cycle and the resulting diminishing/increasing amounts of sunlight (radiant energy) reaching the earth's surfaces.
Some could argue it the other way too:

Re:I can't believe you people still defend IranTalk != Action. Saying that Israel should be wiped off the map of the world is different from sending your tanks in to do that.
Neither they nor the terrorist groups deny this fact (in fact, they openly boast about it) because they claim these groups are honorable "resistance groups" and there is no shame in funding them.
I'm aware of Iran's support of Hamas. There is still a fine line between proxy wars and actual wars. The Soviet Union and the US fought many proxy wars, yet made damn sure that none of their own troops were involved. That's because both were aware of what the immediate escalation would look like.
Finally, besides the diplomatic implications of unilateral escalations, there are the practical military ones that won't go away until Iraq changes significantly. As in, becomes something similar to Saudi Arabia.
#1: An invasion would accomplish nothing, as the US will not be able to stay. And I can guarantee you that this will not be like invading Germany or Japan, where the populations were either tired of their dictators, or accepted the implications of having been defeated on a battlefield. This will be the equivalent of Israel invading Lebanon.
#2: The US is currently not capable of fighting a large scale war in Iran. Not without completely abandoning Iraq.
Why do you think the current provocations of Iran - which, by the way, are technically far closer to acts of war than supporting Hamas - go unanswered? It's because everyone knows that there is not a damn thing anyone can do about them.
The only thing that could trigger a full-scale response by the Allied forces is an actual invasion of a country. The reason for this is that only a full-on invasion would cost the US more to let it slide than to tackle it head-on.
I appreciate your desire to eradicate bad people and to secure the world from terrorist acts. However, ultimately, it's all a cost-benefit analysis. And the cost-benefit analysis is so dramatically skewed against invading Iran that anything short of Iran dropping a nuke on Israel will not have any positive outcome. And that's counting externalities like saving the world from evil.
As I've already pointed out, Iran has done much more than just "talk" about wiping Israel off the map.
In any case, it seems to me this article is quite relevant in the context of our discussion and touches upon many of the points I am trying to make: http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull&cid=1167467762531 -
More than 5 cutsThere are likely more than the 5 being reported by the media, possibly 8. There has certainly been confusion on the subject. The following was written by Richard Sauder and is quoted from this web page: http://www.cyberspaceorbit.com/ConnectingTheDots.htm
By my count, we are probably dealing with as many as eight, maybe even nine, unexplained cut or damaged undersea cables within the last week, and not the mere three or four that most mainstream news media outlets in the United States are presently reporting. Given all this cable-cutting mayhem in the last several days, who knows but what there may possibly be other cut and/or damaged cables that have not made it into the news cycle, because they are lost in the general cable-cutting noise by this point. Nevertheless, let me enumerate what I can, and keep in mind, I am not pulling these out of a hat; all of the sources are referenced at the conclusion of the article; you can click through and look at all the evidence that I have. It's there if you care to read through it all 1) one off of Marseille, France 2) two off of Alexandria, Egypt 3) one off of Dubai, in the Persian Gulf 4) one off of Bandar Abbas, Iran in the Persian Gulf 5) one between Qatar and the UAE, in the Persian Gulf 6) one in the Suez, Egypt 7) one near Penang, Malaysia 8) initially unreported cable cut on 23 January 2008 (Persian Gulf?)
The article includes the following links as references to document the above list of believed cuts:

Re:The question we're all thinking. The post apparently did not give much information. It did not mention that the incident involved Israeli journalists translating Hebrew into English. I think most of the commenters are reacting as though the translation was from English to Dutch. Here is a link to the Jerusalem Post article: http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1192380743991&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull.
But things get even more confusing when it is pointed out that Babelfish does NOT translate Hebrew. So, what are the real facts here?
-
Babelfish Doesn't Translate Hebrew
I can't find any Hebrew translation option on the babelfish website.
Furthermore, in the Jerusalem Post article, they point to a site babelfish.com, which appears to be a SEO site and doesn't do translations at all.
Compound that with the question of "Why would the Dutch Foreign Ministry care about an email from some random Israeli reporter?", and I'm guessing that this entire story is a hoax.
Yes, I realize that the Jerusalem Post is supposedly a high-quality paper, but the fact that they linked to a site (babelfish.com) that doesn't even do online translations makes me think that this wasn't their most well-researched and well-substantiated work. If this is really causing such a fuss in Holland, how come there is nothing in the Dutch press about this? -

Re:a little tweakSorry, but I've been down this road before, and I didn't really buy it the first time. Iran could hypothetically have anti-matter planet busters, but the only way I'll believe it coming from this administration is if they take me personally on a tour of Iran and show them to me. That's the funny thing about credibility. Once it's shot, it's REALLY hard to get it back.
OK, so you don't trust the US administration when it comes to Arab countries and WMD's. That's completely understandable. Would you believe the leader of that Arab country? Look here.
Ironically, I always believed Iran to be a more credible threat to US interests than Iraq anyway. I was never in favor of the Iraq war, but the right argument with solid evidence might have got me behind hitting Iran. But that ship has sailed, and I won't be getting on the next one.
Again, I understand. Don't listen to the Bush administration and you still have all the solid evidence you need. May I also suggest that you read up on Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's plans for the 12th Imam. Now keep in mind that the 12'th Imam will only return after Armageddon. Here is how Ahmadinejad sees Iran's role: "Our revolution's main mission is to pave the way for the reappearance of the 12th Imam, the Mahdi," Ahmadinejad said in the speech to Friday Prayers leaders from across the country. This ain't Iraq. I was for the war in Iraq, and I still am. I've met those people and understand why we are there. But this is something much different. Our intel is not coming from Iranian defectors with an ax to grind. It is coming from Ahmadinejad himself. If I could go back in time and stop us from going into Iraq, I would do it in a heart beat. I would do so because it has caused us to pause when it comes to Iran and that is much more dangerous than Iraq ever would be. -

Ahmadinejad on Science and Islam
Here's the Iranian leaders take on science is in the Islamic world:
Speaking as "an academic," Ahmadinejad said that from his perspective, the role of science is to serve Islam and that any science that does not serve Islamic goals is corrupt. As he put it, "Science is the light, and scientists must be pure and pious. If humanity achieves the highest level of physical and spiritual knowledge but its scholars and scientists are not pure, then this knowledge cannot serve the interests of humanity." Elaborating on this notion, he argued that Western scientists serve corrupt governments who reject the pure and pious path of Islam and therefore are used as agents for corruption.
From a Caroline Glick article on Ahmadinejad's visit to Columbia.
