Programming as a board game
There's a project on Kickstarter aimed for ages 3+that ends in a few hours:
(Robot Turtles: The Board Game for Little Programmers)
-
Robot TurtlesMy only affiliation with this game is that I back it. Today is the last day of the kickstarter..... http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/danshapiro/robot-turtles-the-board-game-for-little-programmer
Robot Turtles is a board game for kids ages 3-8. It takes seconds to learn, minutes to play, and will keep them learning for hours. Kids won't know it but while they're playing, they're learning the fundamentals of programming.

Re:Heh... chalk it up to...
I remember being in sixth grade and taking a data processing class. I told the teach that I could hack the school computer which was a PDP11/4a (if I remember correctly).
He said, no you can't
I said, "Yes I can"
He said again, "No you can't"
I said I most certainly can!
He said, "I dare ya to prove it"
So I did just that and did a cat
/dev/random>sda1 or some such thing, and erased the days works from the RPG class.Nearly got expelled for it! It was worth the fun! Goes to show ya!
Now I am up to much much more constructive fun with this kickstarter project!
By the way iWoz is a great book! Go Woz!

Re:The graphics were simply brilliant
You might be interested in this game when it finally comes out. It's meant to be an open world game that emphasizes exploration and there are a lot of interesting features planned for the game.

Re:jerk
I would argue he is not doing his job. If he were doing his job he would issue a warning. If he is concentrating a whole month passing out tickets for texting at traffic lights he obviously is not doing a very good job. Having said that my personal rule is texting and driving don't mix at all. Holding a cell phone in your hand getting GPS information or any other information is also a distraction. Your GPS should be on the dash not in your hands while you are driving. There are plenty of hands free solutions for phones out there if you really must make that phone call. Here is one http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/prompt/prompt-worlds-best-all-in-one-phone-case-and-car-m?ref=live

Take a Video of the whole thing
I have designed an iPhone and Samsung SIII Case that allows you to slide the phone easily into your pocket and into a suction cup on the windshield/or dash.
You wouldn't believe how good the front facing video of the road is.
I was able to capture a cop helping out a friend of mine stuck on the side of the road, unfortunately I ran out of film so I didn't get the good parts.
I imagine that one could capture a large amount of over enforcement incidents and it would be good for accountability. Using Siri to control the phone would be a good way to avoid getting tickets for fiddling with the phone.
The kickstarter funding project for it is here iPhone & Galaxy Dash/Windshield Mount Case.
If this project is successful I might start a project to get funding for some kind of wireless rear camera that can capture video and transmit it to the phone in the front through over a wireless net.

Apple isn't Dying. It's going through a phase
Apple isn't dying folks. There a huge company and a good model for business.
The problem is competition is higher and technology development is going through a period where earth moving changes are not occurring. This is a temporary problem. Since I think technology growth will start occurring in a more stepped fashion. When some earth moving advancements occur more dramatic changes will appear to technology. Till then companies are competing on price. Apple has a disadvantage in this area right now. They can't offer 5C's for little to no cost so competing with Samsung is hard.
Anyways, yesterday I found an open convertible with a iPhone Gold edition attached to the Windshield. It was in a sleek black case that was mounted on a podium like suction cup mount which was attached to the windshield. I snapped a few photo's of it.
I couldn't help but reach in and see how easily it slid off the Windshield (Leaving the suction cup attached to the windshield.) It slipped so easily in my pocket but being honest I decided to slide it back into its swivel mount and wait for the owner to find out where he got the case from.
He told me he got it here: KickStarter Project.
Anyways, if you want to get one of the coolest cases I have ever seen then take a look!

Re:It's not quantity it is quality
What many people miss out is that many middleware libraries these days allow for easy porting between Linux, Windows and OSX. Most big titles aren't locked to a single platform, either. GTA V is out for both XBox 360, PS3 and PC. That means there is an OpenGL version and any Windows-specific functions are hidden away in a software abstraction layer. That in turn means a Linux port (as in, get the damn thing up and running on a Linux box) is not only feasible, but could probably be done by two programmers in one months' time.
There are also a bunch of promising kickstarter projects, nearly all of them promise a Linux port these days. Games like Planetary Annihilation[1] or Mighty No 9[2] have got Linux ports out of the box and would be available on Steambox with 99% certainty.
So, yes, while there is a cost to porting, it's not half as huge as it used to be and it gets smaller all the time.

iPhone 5S gold champagne found --funny
I found this sweet iPhone 5S gold yesterday. It was in an open convertible car attached to the dash in a cool looking case. My bro Rizzla snapped some photos of it in the car.
Anyway it appears to be a Verizon which I can't use so I figured maybe a trade for a T-Mobile one would be cool. I don't mind if the one you have is Black or Silver as long as it's a 5S.
I posted more pics on http://madmacmods.com

Copycat
It looks like they are trying to steal the idea of this kickstarter. He has proposed the exact same thing and will be shipping out inexpensive15X lenses(up to 60X if the phone has optical zoom) next month and is currently working on even more powerful 150X lens attachment. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/968523355/micro-phone-lens-cell-phone-based-microscope

Re:Expensive and misdirected
You mean like this one?
-
Re:Price?
The bottom of the article says $2,500.
All these printers seem way overpriced to me. I would rather go for something like this one which seems just as good quality for 1/4 the price.
So.. time to wake up.
-
Re:Price?... Here's one for $100
I just came across this 3D printer on Kickstarter. It uses resin rather than melting solid plastic and also has a uniquely simple method of aiming the laser (which solidifies the resin), leading to a very inexpensive design.
It's a Kickstarter project so long lead time and no guarantee of success but I think I may back it since it definitely represents "thinking different" and has a reasonable chance of success. Also at $100 it's low risk.
It uses Blender for 3D modeling. It also has a scanner attachment so you can scan a print. All open source software. (Actually, the hardware is simple enough that I could probably build it myself.)
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/117421627/the-peachy-printer-the-first-100-3d-printer-and-sc -
Re:what exactly can you print on these?
Filabot - a machine that takes your recyclable plastic and converts it into filament that your 3D printer uses. Even uses your old printed objects as well.
So now you're saving the planet too! -
The Hidden Catch in Kickstarter
Chris Kohler reports that Subutai Corporation, the developer of Clang, the motion-controlled swordfighting game spearheaded by fiction author Neal Stephenson, has burned through the over half a million dollars that backers donated and can't finish the game without even more money. "We've hit the pause button on further CLANG development while we get the financing situation sorted out," says the Clang Team. "We stretched the Kickstarter money farther than we had expected to, but securing the next round, along with constructing improvised shelters and hoarding beans, has to be our top priority for now."
But not so fast writes Kohler. "What shocks me about this particular update is that Subutai seems to be neither apologetic, nor realistic about what actually occurred in this case. Reading the update, it seems like the blame is falling everywhere but on Subutai's own decisions."
The Clang Team says that "Kickstarter is amazing, but one of the hidden catches is that once you have taken a bunch of people's money to do a thing, you have to actually do that thing, and not some other thing that you thought up in the meantime." Only after completing the whole Kickstarter did they discover the hidden trick to the whole thing writes Kohler, which is that you have to make the thing you took people's money to make.
"Hey, Kickstarter creators: If you run out of money and need to explain things to your backers, you're stuck between a rock and a hard place and I don't envy you having to decide how to approach it. But I can say one thing: Definitely do not post an update like this." -
Not exactly the same, but still
From the "Same same, but (very) different" Dept. there is this little Kickstarter project:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/david-toledo/the-practical-meter-know-your-powerActually, it is twofold, there's the "Practical meter", which shows how much power is drawn, and then there's the three tipped charging cable with built in circuits enabling a device to draw more power from sources that supports it.
-
Not the only one out there
There's a current KickStarter project called LockedUSB which does something similar, but which also includes a power management chip in order to negotiate higher power charging levels that normally require data connectivity. LockedUSB doesn't appear as big or ugly as the one in TFA. (Full disclosure: I'm a backer)

Omate TrueSmart: Water-resistant standalone Smartw
Here is one I think has real potential:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/omate/omate-truesmart-water-resistant-standalone-smartwa
It was mentioned here on
/. not long ago:They have already reached some amazing stretch goals, such as Sapphire Crystal Glass, and are
aiming for further ones, like 720p video recording. -
Re:Freenet, I2P, Tor - darknets
There is also a KickStarter for software called Trsst that's a secure, distributed replacement for Twitter.
All these free/secure Facebook and Twitter are great, but who is going to use it? How do you connect to eachother if nobody you know uses it or wants to use it?
-
Re:Freenet, I2P, Tor - darknets
There is also a KickStarter for software called Trsst that's a secure, distributed replacement for Twitter. Basically it's makes the key management and public key distribution easy, and gives you control over your own data. They're at about 50% funding with a week or so left. If you have any interest in this sort of thing, have a look. This sort of thing shouldn't be required, but until things change, this is a nice solution.

Disappointing...
I've been waiting for this because I wanted a phone that was easy to carry (like a watch, duh). I have been following the Omate TrueSmart on Kickstarter:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/omate/omate-truesmart-water-resistant-standalone-smartwa
Now that Samsung has released more information, I'm very disappointed. It's not a stand alone phone, it requires the latest Samsung phone to be paired all of the time. It's crippled Android. (Not very attractive, either, compared to the Omate). The Omate is waterproof and is a fully functioning phone with better specs... and it's only $200.
I guess Samsung was just looking to create a fancy "accessory" for their phone without much functionality. -
Kickstarter is region coded
Would you name some notable Free video games that were funded through Kickstarter, so that I and other developers who are first-time users of Kickstarter can understand how this tool was used successfully in the past and in this way figure out how best to use this tool? And what's the best way to approach establishing a US, UK, or Canadian subsidiary in order to qualify under KS's guidelines?
-
Re:The future is client wearables.
These people (Omate) seem to be making a good try at a standalone smartphone as a wristwatch.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/omate/omate-truesmart-water-resistant-standalone-smartwa
I've been thinking about getting one. Looks it will have everything I would want. It operates as a standalone smartphone including touch screen, speaker, microphone... even a camera. Nice design and a bit smaller than the "sport" watch I currently wear. Can also link to a "full size" smartphone via WiFi or Bluetooth. Even waterproof to wear while swimming, etc. They are predicting delivery in October and November this year. -
Re:Dick Tracy?
If it's also a phone and doesn't need another phone to work, I want one.
Well, this one works like you want: slahdot story, kickstarter

Indiegogo v. KickstarterAs one commenter said:
Actually it does matter a great deal. A key difference is what happens to the money if the project is not funded to the goal level. On kickstarter if the project misses its goal, no money changes hands. On indiegogo campaigns can be set up as "Flexible Funding" and the hosts get whatever is pledged (minus 9% for fees).
From the Kickstarter page:
Why is Kickstarter funding all-or-nothing?
On Kickstarter, a project must reach its funding goal before time runs out or no money changes hands. Why? It protects everyone involved. This way, no one is expected to develop a project with an insufficient budget, which sucks. Remember you set your own funding goal, so aim to raise the minimum amount you'll need to create your vision. Projects can always raise more than their goal, and often do.
From the Indiegogo FAQ
What if I don't reach my funding goal?
If your campaign is set up as Flexible Funding, you will be able to keep the funds you raise, even if you don't meet your goal. If your campaign is set up as Fixed Funding, all contributions will be returned to your funders if you do not meet your goal. Flexible Funding campaigns that meet their goal are only charged 4% as our platform fee, whereas campaigns that do not meet their goal are charged 9%.

Photographing the remaining ones
For those interested in the current state of drive in theatres, Carl Weese had a Kickstarter project (which I backed) to fund a road trip in order to photograph as many of the remaining drive in theatres as possibly before the switch to digital projection. Many theatres were not expected to be able to fund the transition to digital projection.
Some of those photographs were featured on MSN and more are available on his site.

Here was an option..
This was an option, unfortunately the project is over. You might be able to get one by emailing them directly.. or you could use it as a model to make your own.
-
Yes, better than a Kinect
The 3D resolution is a lot better, just see the kickstarter page.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/45699157/fuel3d-a-handheld-3d-scanner-for-less-than-1000?ref=live
Also it uses a proper depth sensor that doesn't need to be manually calibrated. (Last I read Kinect has to be manually calibrated for depth each time it is used)
Yes you can create colour 3D models with a Kinect, but this is designed to that a snapshot that is usable for high quality 3D prints, use for commercial 3D, or scaling down to game polygon count.
From what I'm reading the Kinect is kind of like your camera phone. Not bad, but not particularly good either. The Fuel3D is more like a DSLR. -
Re:Limited cargo use
If you read the KS http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/391496725/the-slingatron-building-a-railroad-to-space?ref=search then they say this very thing.
The extreme acceleration (g load) experienced by the Slingatron payload during launch would easily crush the human body or any other carbon-based life-form unit.
Seems we need to change to silicon-based.
Seriously, can this thing work? -
Re:Probably only verifiable .NET codeWithin 10 years, I'd be a bit shocked if the consoles are not majorly impacted by some sort of phone that plugs into your HDTV device that supports a controller --- likely on Android, but possibly Apple too. One example: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/872297630/gamestick-the-most-portable-tv-games-console-ever
Or this pressure could come from Valve/SteamBox or an unforeseen marketplace entry.
The PSP and the Nintendo DS are on their last legs due to iPads/Android/iPods/maybe Kindles too, it is only a matter of time before cell phones (with ability to HDMI connect to HDTV) start to knock off the console business model.
It may not kill consoles --- but consoles will face enormous pressure on pricing, developer access. The PS4 would likely go down first. -
Re:Not fully open source
Help me out here. The Adapteva sales pitch is claiming you get faster time to market by not having to do any FPGA programming (ANSI-C and OpenCL for the multicore coprocessors). The Zynq processor seems to be just for the host OS, which they say can run Ubuntu out of the box and they provide open source development tools for everything else. No mention of Xilinx anywhere that I can see. Am I missing something?
he was probably confusing this with http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1106670630/mojo-digital-design-for-the-hobbyist
which pretty much means he didn't read even half of TFS.
-
Re:But why?
All the studies i checked (sorry no ref, that was 15 years ago) on the subject correlated closely drops of burglary with increase of outdoor lightning in the same area.
But why not explore other sources of lighting? glowing plants for example (they had some success with kickstarter a few months ago)
-
No mention of the kickstarter?
Summary makes no mention of the CAT kickstarter campaign for this thing.

What about Space Monkey?
I backed this:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/clintgc/space-monkey-taking-the-cloud-out-of-the-datacente
I like it a lot better then any of the standard 'cloud data' offerings and plan to use it for sharing TrueCrypt drives and as an easy to sync method. -
Re:"commercial piracy"
The ability (either physical or legal) to copy data does nothing to make writers or composers obsolete. The work of writers and composers is not to copy data. They aren't even involved in the copying of the data. It makes no philosophical or economic sense to pay them for something not done by them and not involving them.
They should be paid for the work they in fact do, which is to say, inventing/discovering new data (and not, I repeat, copying existing data). This is something that has not yet been made ridiculously easy by technology (the way copying data has), and thus still has substantial exchange value. People who have money to spare and want new data (and there are still many of these) will eventually arrange ways by which their money is paid to those who invent/discover new data for the work to be done. This would probably take the form of contracts, i.e. a group of people who collectively want certain kinds of new data collectively arrange a contract for a skilled artist to invent/discover new data of that kind (to an extent this is already happening). In fact, with less of the money being siphoned off into the pockets of CEOs and lawyers in the form of economic rent, this system of exchange would actually be more efficient, with consumers paying less money, more new data being invented/discovered, and more money going to the community of working artists. It would also give artists an assurance that they are being paid for their work, because the terms of the contract would be in place before the artists contributed their labor; and in the absence of copyright law, they would also face no fear of being drawn into a lawsuit after accidentally inventing/discovering data someone else already invented/discovered (which, in a sane world, is not something wrong or punishable).
The system of contracts and free information makes philosophical and economic sense; it is a sane system. The system of private rent capture, lawsuits, price fixing, waste, copyright trolling, and constant fear is an insane system. Like any other abuse of economics, it represents an overall cost to society and benefits only the abusers.

Re:Hopefully it means more Sierra Adventure Games.
Well the people who created Space Quest don't own the IP to Roger Wilco now, but they had this Kickstarter last year which achieved its funding:

Pocket Spacecraft
Even better, the Pocket Spacecraft project has started its Kickstarter
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1677943140/send-your-own-pocket-spacecraft-on-a-mission-to-th
"We’ve developed a very low cost, open source, open access, mass space exploration system that anyone can use, and we need your help to send your very own Pocket Spacecraft, and thousands of others, on a first of its kind expedition to the moon."
A dude from the project had a stand at the recent RPi day in @Bristol and the whole thing is awesome, thousand of spacecraft thinner than a floppy disk will crash land on the MOON! -

Re:Damage control
Citation badly needed.
Well, since you were a bit non-specific on what you're feeling butthurt about, I'll have to guess...Holy shit, a console made out of spare parts still has a better rep than the Xbone. Allows you to run your own software. Costs $99. 63,000 pre-orders. Meanwhile, at Microsoft HQ... "There aren't any official numbers..." (troll face)
Where are the hard numbers from Sony on PS4 sales? According to your logic, that must mean the Ouya has a "better rep" and more orders than the PS4, right?

Re:Wi-Fi toothpick
yeah, and the wi fi doors. look, i dont want my 45 cent light bulb costing me 50 bucks.
They're actually $69 each
Neat idea, but the price is prohibitive, and I don't quite trust Kickstarter, either the companies on there or Kickstarter themselves, because they only get paid if a project reaches it's goal so it's in their best interest for every project to reach it's goal, but what prevents Kickstarter from fudging the numbers a bit to make it look like projects reach their goal?
I'll buy one from a retail store when they're $5 next year. -
Planetary Resources Arkyd-100 Space Telescope
It's great that Slashdot is giving coverage to the above story, but how come they're not giving timely coverage to the fact that Planetary Resources has announced a new Stretch Goal for their existing Kickstarter campaign:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1458134548/arkyd-a-space-telescope-for-everyone-0
They're promising that if the new $2M fund-raising goal is crossed, they'll use the extra funds to upgrade their Arkyd-100 Space Telescope to search for exo-planets. This is a fantastic idea, especially given the recent breakdown of NASA's Kepler planet-finding probe.
I hope you will all consider pledging some money to this fine Kickstarter campaign too, because finding more of those alien worlds will help to expand our horizons and our aspirations of the future.

Radio Free Albemuth has already been filmed and there's a kickstarter campaign running to get it published:

Re:To: the critics,
This should be on slashdot because
...If you were smart, you'd just get any one of the VESA mount Raspberry Pi cases and mount the pie on the monitor
Oh, and in a 10 second Google search, here are a few that do the same thing but you know, a long time ago.
http://blog.parts-people.com/2012/12/20/mobile-raspberry-pi-computer-build-your-own-portable-rpi-to-go/

http://www.adafruit.com/blog/2013/05/17/raspberry-pi-in-oak-case-with-monitor-piday-raspberrypi-raspberry_pi/You can find all the required parts by visiting pretty much any website of a large Raspberry Pi dealer (Adafruit, Element14) that has a dedicated RaspPi section and you'll find a list of all the parts, ready made, to be shipped to you to do just this.
Its not like this guy had to even 'find parts'.
And these are cooler (alas, the don't really qualify since they don't have monitors attached):
http://supernintendopi.wordpress.com/

Re:Xilinx Zync anybody?
there was a successful kickstarter campaign some time ago that introduced precisely those chips [Zynq-7020] at quite affordable prices: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/adapteva/parallella-a-supercomputer-for-everyone/ they are going to have them available for sale soon at http://www.parallella.org/ after the kickstarter pledges are fulfilled. at $100 + shipping they are far more affordable than what you mention, they are also committed to having most (if not all?) things open, so be sure to check out their website.
