Re:Unauthorized export resale?
Typically you don't need to taser the hell out of someone to escort them from the premises.
Typically you speak the language of the land you're in if you want to avoid problems. Typically people don't buy that many iphones. Typically you leave when asked to do so when on private property. Did you know it's illegal to remain on property when you're no longer welcome? Or do laws only apply to residents who speak the language and are male?
Specifically when it's a woman. You might call me old fashioned or sexist here, but where I'm from we get taught not to use violence against women.
So women are equal but not when it comes to assault (with or without a weapon), battery, murder? How about when women hit you in the face and hop a counter to further attack you? Double standard much? Hypothetically in order to conquer the south the only thing that's needed is to have an army full of women, then? *puffs pipe* Interesting theory!
Did you know that even restraining someone is considered violence, so if we follow your lead even an officer restraining someone is violent, and a no-no. How do you propose to even arrest women? Maybe you can create an all female gang and live a life of ease, assuming you ask nicely of course! -

See this "lady".
And compare that to when Bush was president, HERE. It's actually the same reporter. Also, two wrongs don't make a right, especially when you have to make one of the wrongs up to justify your hatred and bad behavior.

Re:Calm before the hyperbole
Of course they aired it because it was exciting, and statistically, suicides are rare.
On April 30, 1998, I decided to ditch the latter half of the school day with my girlfriend. On the news was the long, drawn-out suicide of Daniel Victor Jones [ WARNING: GRAPHIC! ] who was an AIDS patient protesting, on the Los Angeles' 710 freeway, teh lack of care he received through an HMO. The part that the video does not show is that he gets in his truck with his dog before he sets the truck on fire, then runs out of the flaming truck shutting the door behind him so that his dog dies in the inferno.
Then, he gets his shotgun and blows his head off. All of this was televised LIVE on the news, which caused the news networks to actually put counselors on the air after the incident, it was a huge shitstorm.
As for me, I felt sick to my stomach for the rest of the day. My girlfriend said, "well, that fucker deserved it. Let's go get some KFC. " I told her, "you want to eat right after watching a grizzly live suicide?!" She said, "Yeah, why not? He deserved it, burning his dog like that. Let's go to KFC."

Re:Drones are dirt cheap and no pilot dies.
Actually, the first drone (U.S. Predator MQ-1) vs. manned fighter jet (Iraqi MiG-25) dogfight happened in 2002. At the time, the U.S. was using Predators to bait Iraqi fighters and then run (Israel had successfully done something similar against Egypt and Syria in the early 1980s using F-4s as bait). The MiG engaged the Predator, and the Predator, which was armed with Stinger missiles, did not run. Both both fired missiles at each other. The Predator missed; the MiG didn't. You can see a video of the dogfight here http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=76a_1173456397 [CBS video hosted on liveleak.com], and read about it here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikoyan-Gurevich_MiG-25#Persian_Gulf_War [wikipedia.org].

Why not just 3 fingers, indeed?
I saw a documentary once about some poor Chinese guy who lost all his fingers in some kind of accident. The Chinese doctors removed some of his toes (the guy had pretty long toes) and ginned up a three-fingered hand for him with, of course, toes for fingers. It appeared to work really well. The guy seemed damned happy about it. Come to think of it, I would be, too.
I looked briefly for a link to the old China story, but only came up with an upbeat human interest yarn about an American guy born with two fingers on one hand getting this same operation. He was fine with his congenital two-fingered hand but needed a toe transplant only after he cut off one of the two fingers on his defective hand using a table saw. After some physio he is doing better with three than he did with two. Even if two of them were (are?) toes. Which, frankly, comes as no great surprise.
So I guess a robot with three fingers would be pretty functional, too.

censorship vs ?
I've never watched vids for a living, but there are at least a dozen or so which have tainted my psyche to some extent. Some, I have to forget for my own health. But where does removing the meaninglessly wretched turn from "editing", to censorship of the meaningfully wretched? There are some truly horrible videos which have been available for years and left alone. Yet others which hardly compare are often removed. One particular video that is repeatedly removed is one of alleged US soldiers beating a sheep to death with a baseball bat. But as horrible as it is, it scarcely compares to hundreds of others which are not censored. Two pretty disturbing examples I can immediately think of are these:
Man eaten alive by lions in front of family - yeah, WTF?
Guy has arm ripped off by crocodile - ugly, but understandably uncensored
Not that you'd want to for the sake of viewing something repugnant, but keywords "Syria Violence" could lead very quickly to an appointment with a therapist. For example: Bodies of postal workers thrown from rooftops -- and that is very mild compared to others, especially from Libya. ~ Those are the ones I must forget. As horrible as they are, I strongly believe they should not be censored, and many haven't been. Real events, however horrible, unless to protect privacy, should be left transparent. I admire the function implemented by Google which allows vids to be flagged as +18 Only, but I have also seen this option abused, misused, and sometimes 100% erroneously enforced. But at least it makes viewing certain content voluntary and comes with a disclaimer. That's fine. Censorship is not.
I can imagine viewing such things with any consistency could easily affect one's mental health, or even ruin someone's life. I am sure there are also many who could view such things over breakfast, lunch and dinner and carry on as normal. Certainly censoring bird song isn't difficult though, but I guess that's what AI is for.
What I'd really like see is a more thorough account of the real criterion for censorship at the Chocolate Factory. I've seen many examples of Google censorship which anything but fit the declared purpose. And then sometimes I am left completely surprised. -
Re:Challenge Ryan's economics
I can't find the article either - though I did find this summation: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=b2d_1327531142&comments=1
It doesn't actually seem to be talking about "disposable income", but rather what they call "total economic benefit". Basically taking the earned wages, subtracting the taxes, then adding all of the possible tax credits and program benefits possible. The $60,000 earner comes out to have a net calculation of a bit over $34k, while the $14,500 earner by this calculation has a net calculation of just under $38k. Even if accurate, this doesn't mean that this family has $38k to spend as they see fit, but rather that they qualify for things like Medicare (priced at $16,500 in this calculation) food-stamps, and school lunch programs, for example.
I don't know that it shows that a family would be happier to be bringing in the $14.5k rather than the $60k - mostly I think it shows how vital the support provided by medicare and other such programs actually is - clearly the low income family would no be able to pay for $16,500 of medical care without societal support. $60k for a family of four doesn't get you a lot these days, eh?

Re:"Military Grade" is a political fiction
"The 2nd Amendment was put in place specifically to give people the right to own "military-grade" firearms, so they could protect themselves from a potentially tyrannical government. Hunting actually has little or nothing to do with that. It's just one more reason."
Penn and Teller explain that well:

Obligatory Neil DeGrasse Tyson
This should put things in context: "We Stopped Dreaming"
http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=6b4_1337136397
And despite all the criticisms of the details of NDT's claims, I strongly believe that the underlying theme remains valid. Americans did in fact stop dreaming. The pursuit of science, engineering, and technology, the VALUATION of these things as a foundation for a competitive, progressive, and forward-looking society, is now almost entirely lost upon the American public, replaced by willful superstition, fear, and ignorance. Replaced by doubts about man-made climate change, irrational religious fervor for creationism and other Biblical dogmas, and indeed, an active distrust and suspicion of scientific and critical thinking.
This is not about what China is doing, folks. This is about what America once did on the belief that anything was possible, and about what America no longer does because that attitude has been replaced by a sense of complacency.

Re:Tea
Stalking? You mean, he had repeatedly followed Martin to his home, or place of employment?
Obviously, I mean first following him in a car, then following him on foot. Obviously.
Yes, Zimmerman was doing his job of neighborhood watch and following Trayvon
If you've followed this story at all, you know that is total nonsense. Neighborhood watch members - of which Zimmerman was not actually an actual member of - are only supposed to call police to report suspicious activity. Not to follow "suspicious" people by car and then by foot. Which is what the 911 operator said to Zimmerman over the phone.
and following Trayvon, who was acting suspicious (according to Zimmerman's account).
By being an unfamiliar person in the neighborhood while wearing a hoodie.
The witnesses, the police officers, Trayvon's bruised knuckles and Zimmerman's bloody head, while not absolute proof, all agree with Zimmerman's story.
Which, again, convicts Zimmerman of at least manslaughter. You do not get to stalk people and then kill them when they react violently to the stalking.
And, again, who do you guys think you're kidding here. If Joe Horn was walking home and then noticed someone following him first by car then by foot, he would have pulled out his own gun and shot the guy on the spot, no questions asked. And the NRA guys would be all over the case defending Horn.

Joe Biden's keen public speaking abilities.
Joe Biden's contribution to this presidency hasn't been in the form of policy decisions, it's been mainly as a public speaker and ideological mouthpiece. And in that capacity, he's arguably done a fantastic job - just look at how the gay-marriage thing played out last week.
That ain't nothin. Last week his Freudian slip referring to President Romney was especially insightful.

Re:Tried and failed
Failed? I wouldn't call this failed. Furthermore, when considering piracy, in what cases have pirates come back with bigger guns? It's not just merchant vessels hiring PMCs to ward off pirates, but navies ranging from the US to India patrol the Indian Ocean. I can't imagine pirates would have bigger guns than they would. Make the risks of kidnapping too high and piracy will decline.

That's why they won't say it.
Refusal of a search is NOT grounds for arrest, this has been tested in court.
No, but if you're "suspicious looking" they can call a drug dog, who just might "alarm" and thus give them probable cause to search. And when they find that pound of dried plant flowers and scales under your seat, well... good luck explaining that it wasn't yours in court.

Re:Can you handle the truth?
What both you and the OP are missing is that there is a balance between costs and benefits. He is looking only at the costs of those protections, you are looking only at the benefits. I'll disagree with the OP and say that many of those protections are necessary and ultimately beneficial, but realizing that they have very real costs. On the other hand a great many of those protections are NOT worth the cost. If you assert that they are worth the costs you have no standing to complain when the bill comes due in the form of a slower economy and persistent high unemployment.
On thing to remember when evaluating those costs. It's not usually the big bad corporations, the villains of the morality play that usually bear those costs. They have the resources to comply with the regulations and in many cases welcome them as a barrier to entry protecting them from competition. The law preventing BigFoodCo, Inc. from poisoning children (like they really want) is at worst a minor inconvenience to BigFoodCo. They do what's required, file the paperwork, raise the price of milk by a few pennies and turn to some other scheme to fulfill their goal of poisoning children. The people who bear the cost are potential entrepreneurs who look at the costs and decide it's not worth it. Or those that go for it but end up bankrupt because the costs of compliance were too high. Or, those who don't comply and get caught like organic coops and Amish farmers raided by the police and FDA for selling raw milk to the tree hugging hippies who want it. Note that in the California case selling raw milk is legal, but they didn't have all the proper paperwork filed. -
One law for the people, another law
the government is not bound by the statute of limitations
Funny, IANAL but isn't that exactly what a statute of limitations DOES? Puts time limits on the government being able to go after you for anything from petty theft to capital murder.
Also it kinda reminds me of this case, where a judge ruled that the government is "immune to lawsuits when property is in custody of law enforcement.".
So it looks like the odds are pretty stacked in favor of the government. Tell yourself exactly how "free" you are, nowadays.

Re:Bringing the third world attitudes home
No, you misunderstand.
Yes, he was driving a weapon. But you clearly misunderstand the narrative that makes this not make sense unless he drew a weapon or made some other overt threatening action.
Here is the video:
http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=ef7_1306812064The video sucks though, so let me explain what I see blow by blow. I may be wrong, about some of this as it's hard to see.
The video starts, and I can't even see the car.
At about 3 seconds shots ring out. The source of them is unclear, but there is on report of shots coming from anywhere other than the officers. At about 5 seconds the car halts near the intersection on the right.
Men approach the car cautiously with guns drawn. Presumably they are the police.
The officers surround the car which is now stopped. There is no additional sign of activity. The car doesn't move any further.
Then at 1:13ish many, many shots ring out. Far more than the number of shots that rang out before. Definitely multiple officers discharging lots of rounds.
The question is why? What were they reacting to?
Reiterating what I said before: If what the suspect supposedly did is true, and the cops are telling the truth that he fled and tried to run them over and refused to stop one can make the argument that the shots at 0:03 could have been justified.
But no shots were fired again until 1:13, and then they unloaded. What changed? If he didn't draw a weapon or make an overt threat, there's no reason. He had been stopped. The shots at 0:03 either hit him, or scared him into stopping.
I have no idea what the first half of your second paragraph is talking about. Sadly, I suspect that there have been too many journalists killed in war zones recently to know which "Reuters guy" you are referring to.
That said, I suspect your analysis of why this happened may be pretty close to the mark. Something along the lines of:
Stressed cops from this big, hard to control event get confronted with a real threat: an officer is nearly run down in a motor vehicle stop. Everyone's on edge, and the suspect is trying to get away. A gunfight ensues. Everyone is keyed up. And bad calls get made.
Further evidence of this is that there was another shooting later in the same night. A female officer who claims a different suspect was trying to run her over too.
It's not an excuse, or a defense. But I think this didn't just happen. These cops were driven to an edge. They did what they thought they had to do, but then they took things too far. I suspect a lot of these things happen in similar ways.

Hezbollah's stockpile bigger, deadlier
In the 2006 war, Hezbollah fired thousands of rockets into northern Israel. Most were inaccurate, short-range models, but the attacks killed at least 39 civilians and had a profound psychological effect on Israelis....
Hezbollah now has about 27,000 rockets and missiles, more than double its supply before the 2006 war, Israeli officials say. Acquisitions include Iranian missiles capable of hitting Tel Aviv, they allege.
"We know without a doubt that the international embargo on the transfer of weapons to Hezbollah has been deliberately violated by the governments of Iran and Syria," said Mark Regev, an Israeli government spokesman.
The U.S. government, which has designated Hezbollah a terrorist group, accuses Iran of providing arms, training and millions of dollars. Syria also has emerged as an arms supplier, not just a conduit for Iranian arms, Israeli officials say.
Iran Builds Rockets to Arm Hezbollah, Deter Sanctions (Update2)

Aug. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Many of the rockets Hezbollah is firing into Israel are made in Iran, demonstrating the Islamic republic's success in copying Chinese and Russian technology to build its own weapons industry. The Shiite Muslim group's arsenal includes Iranian-built portable Katyusha rockets, Israeli Reserve Brigadier General Yossi Kuperwasser said. Hezbollah struck an Israeli ship on July 14 with an Iranian-made C802 Noor guided missile. The militia also has Iran's Zelzal rocket, with a range of 120 miles, enough to reach Tel Aviv from south Lebanon, said Yaakov Amidror, a retired major general who ran Israel's National Defense College.

You do realize most rifles tend to leave clean holes?
Unless he got popped with something
.40 or larger he's still going to be recognizable. Not necessarily - it depends on how close the shot has been. Rifle bullets (esp. FMJ) are small in diameter, yes, but that much kinetic energy can produce very nasty effects.
For example, here is a photo of Chinese execution (back when they did it via bullet to the head), and here (graphic, NSFW!) is the aftermath. As you can see, it pretty much blew off the top of the skull. This was done with a military (i.e. FMJ) 7.62x39mm bullet, which is a far cry from ".40 or larger".
Here is a guy who shot himself in the head from an AK-74 (5.45x39mm). Less impressive - heck, he actually lived - but look at the size of the entry and exit wounds.
As noted above, the pic to which you link is most likely photoshopped.
