Impressive......the mac.com server appears to be holding up quite well against our Slashdot attacks - I'm getting over 300K/s.
My apologies if this does it in, but here are some direct links to the portions of the movies (i.e., not framed in HTML pages)
Teaser
Act One
Act Two
Act Three
Tag/End CreditsI think the episode would be better if the dialouge and video sound quality was as bad as the shots and sound effects of the original, but man - this is impressive ambition to say the least.

not too innovative
at first i (like many slashdotters, from the looks of some of the comments) thought apple had come up with some new technology for changing the color of the computer itself.
however, after seeing this picture posted on ars technica, it looks like what they're really doing is patenting a method of lighting. the picture suggests a light inside the monitor and the computer that illuminates the device. sounds like mod kiddes putting cold cathode lights and windows in their cases, doesn't it? -
Exisiting scripts
Roger Jolly's Encrypt and ".secret" scripts in AEP and the Mac OS X Encoding Plethora seem to have similiar functionality. I'm guessing these tools will not hide your directory structure or file names, but if I'm not mistaken, they will encrypt the individual files in semi-transparent manner.
Does anyone have experience using these? Is the encryption function useful? -
Senior Pictures
At least this guy is honest about being a geek. You have to have balls to take your senior pictures with your computer.

Howabout Starship Exeter
Described by one writer as:
"an interesting site that will be a delight for anyone with broadband and an interest in obsessive sci-fi fandom. Ask yourself: if you and your friends decided to shoot an entire episode of TOS Star Trek, and you wrote a script set on the recommissioned Exeter, and you rented a warehouse, built a replica of a Constitution-class starship, designed all the sets and lighting to look like 1967 TV, and spent SEVEN YEARS on the project, meticulously recreating the look and sound of a TOS episode, what would the result look like?"
I haven't checked it out yet but looks rather interesting. -
Star Trek: Starship Exeter
Sort of related, this Star Trek TOS based film has been making the rounds the past few days:

Apparently it was in production for 7 years and they have just released it. -
Re:This may increase danger... or it will enable the hired help to say "Screw it, he's dead" and change it from a rescue to a recovery!
I read some article a few years ago that the then-fairly-new portable cell phones were enabling yuppies to hike up big mountain's like the White Mountains, then get stuck or exhausted and call 911 for a sky lift down and what a pain they had become for park rangers.
Which reminds me, last October my friends and I hiked up Picacho Peak near Tucson. I'm 43, and while I walk a lot, the three mile hike (so far) was doing a number on my heart and fatigue so I stopped before hitting the top. I was not going to go beyond my limits. The others went on and yeah, I regret it now, but it gives me incentive to go back after I train some more, get some proper gear like gloves for the steel rope climbs and ropes to haul the 9 liters of water we took (which was all on *my* back and made balance going up rock faces very difficult). My mistake was that, since this was a state-park maintained trail, I figured it wouldn't be all that tough. As pics like in the link above show, there were a few almost vertical climbs up rock faces using steel ropes set away from the rock by about two-foot I hooks we had to go up. (I did make it up the biggest set at least!
:)But there was no way I was going to go beyond my limits and then call 9-1-1 like a typical out-of-shape computer geek who doesn't know his limits...
(But yeah, I am still getting teased for being a pussy. Male bonding rituals are the best!

Re:mldonkey is very good
Mod parent up. Mldonkey is a client for the eDonkey network, which is really good. There are also compiled OS X binaries available. It's not as good as the windows client eMule, though (hoping for a Mac OS port soon!).

New Widgets here, old ones there: clue?
It seems some apps do not use the new widgets because the have the old ones hard-wired, so to speak, into their own code. A simple AppleScript Studio app I wrote, which uses the brushed metal look, does have the new widgets, because it references them properly.

Re:The picture
It seems I saw a couple of helmeted motorcyclists in Alabama
I rode through Alabama back in September or October with a friend... We were driving north up to Auburn from Tallahassee, FL -- took US-280 from Columbus, GA to Opelika and then I-85 to Auburn. We were wearing helmets. Pictures of my motorcycle here. Perhaps you saw us? :^) -
Scary but funny scenario
I wonder how many people will get one of these jackets and forget to take it off when they get off their motorcycle... The rider starts walking away, then the sensing circuits in the jacket detect that the rider and motorcycle are getting further away, then PFFFFFFT, instant fat rider!
:^)
Coincidentally, I actually rode my Honda Magna 750 motorcycle into work today... -

.Mac ("dot-mac") screen saver for Mac OS X
Ironically, this was submitted (and rejected) earlier today; faulting myself for not having checked for this thread before submitting (or acting before.)
The "Earth As Art" images are also available for Mac OS X v10.2 users as a
.Mac (dot-mac) module for Screen Effects. Type in "EarthAsArt" as the .Mac Membership Name in the preferences to get the show going. The images were mangled with
.Mac Slides Publisher and the resulting slide show tweaked to include PDF intertitles. The imagery is a pick of about ten random images from the about fourty images available, randomized daily by a Perl script and pushed to the site with HTTP::DAV.

Re:Mac User
And for all you mac using scivvy boys n girls i have never had more than 10 minutes uptime on a mac, yet i have windows 2k on 25 days before it crashed and Windows XP on 37 Days (Proof) before an accidental restart.
It's a poor carpenter who blames his tools. When properly set up, Macs are quite stable-- like my home automation server, up for 119 days now and still going strong. The uptime would be even greater, except I shut my systems down and unplug them when particularly strong thunderstorms roll through my area-- and one did just that 119 days ago.
My Win2k box at work is NEVER shut down, and never crashes. It would have pretty spectacular uptime were it not for the restart required after installation of the security patch du jour. My XP Pro box at home likewise never crashes, but there's no uptime records to be had there because I shut it down at night-- it's about 5 feet from my head when I'm in bed, and the fans required to keep the beast cool are so damned noisy they'd keep me awake.

Grr... Internet Explorer...
Argh, the gallery slide show does not work in Mozilla.
It's ok; it's not a big deal, but in case anybody is taking a count of the number of things that are non-standard and IE-specific, feel free add this to your list. -

Here's one they need:
I was watching a sci-fi show...
and it was like...beep beep beep beep beep...
and then...like...the entire show was gone...
i was like..uh?

It's kind of...(long silence...) a bummer.

Alcoholics Anonymous
Did someone else get the feeling of an AA meeting when you watched the I Am Farscape commercial?
-
Link
A-ha, they do in fact have a link to the commercial itself -- hosted at mac.com, I note with pride. (Yeah, I dropped my account like most people when they started to charge, but still.)
Gee, I'm glad these people are all Farscape, but what does this prove? Also, I suspect they didn't write their own lines other than the [insert name here].
I repeat my earlier "insightful +5" assertion that Farscape rocks. It is a professional, cool, well-written alternative to the ST rut and the Star Wars commercial nightmare. And is has real characters people care about. Don't we all want to see the Scarrans whupped? -

Amazing!A company charges for premium E-mail service while leaving bare-bones, restricted service free, and is still making money!
So, when is Steve going to realize he made a mistake by turning a totally free service used by many into a totally paid service used by few, with no middle ground??

Re:This has been up and advertised for months
There is a free trial that lists the backup software. You only get limited space with the free trial but you can get the software and setup your own server for backups.
-
unison, hfspax
I don't know anything about
.Mac, but if the main point is backups and file synchronization, why is proprietary software necessary? Hfspax works great for archiving files without losing their macintosh resource fork, and unison is a wonderful file syncrhonization that I use to sync up my various Linux and MacOS X accounts. -

You can easily get the latest chimera build...

Verizon Mobile OfficeVerizon's Mobile Office is works with all of their plans at no additional cost for a 14.4 connection (you can pay more for higher speeds). It's slow but a pretty good deal since plans start around $30/month.
I use the Motorola V Series 120c phone and it's not hard to get it to work as a usb modem with linux or OS X.

Re:SWAP File/Partition?
Yes, and this gives OS X quite a performance penalty. It is easy to add swap partition support to OS X by editing your
/etc/rc file manually or by using the simple Swap Cop utility and then using the program Swap Relocator to get post-10.2 MacOS X to use those prefs set in /etc/rc. The Darwin team at Apple is supposedly working on this, and there will be a simple way to assign VM swap partitions in one of the next releases. -
Re:Benchmarks?
... and if you go here you'll find that G3 450 achieving 62% of a P3 733's performance at cross-compiling gcc. That would make a P3 clocked at 454.5 MHz a G3 450's equal. The numbers look worse for native compilation.

Overly Convoluted
Interesting use and integration of standard technologies (iCalender, WebDAV and RDF) but it seems like an overly complex way of checking news-feeds. I'll stick with using SlashDock and NetNewswire.

Note: I have not used it, but the reviews on Versiontracker are good. -
Re:What is Fortran used for these days? No. You're a liar. A dirty, rotten liar.
Man! I hate being called a liar -- OK, you asked for it! -- Here is the code. The executable was wrapped in a shell scrip that shuffled everything nicely along -- it also required standard input file (text) to define the address for the envelope
