- Fink - UNIX software for your mac
- Gimp.app - decent free photo editor
- Handbrake - DVD to mpeg4 ripper
- iTerm - Multi tabbed terminal
- Logorrhea - iChat log viewer/searcher/indexer
- Meteorologist - Weather applet for the menu bar
- Menu Meters - Menu applet for cpu usage, net usage, and more.
- Mplayer OS X - This app will play just about any media format in existance
- Poisoned - GiFT (Kazaa) and mldonkey based P2P mac client.
- Quicksilver - Very cool file/application/url/itunes/etc/etc/etc indexing program. It's like spotlight, only here TODAY and free!
- VLC - Another good video playing app. Nice to have a backup sometimes if mplayer doesn't play a file (which is very very rare).
That's the jist of things i give them. Besides that. play with expose. it is godlike. i recommend setting the screen corners for maximum efficiency. Besides that, the best thing you can do is to just play around with the apps and system until you're comfortable -
Pictures Fake
In the other forums that have already covered this, such as Mac Rumors and AppleInsider, evidence suggests that the pictures are not the iMac.
But, this can mean many things. It can be the new apple display, or a completely unannounced product. But, just as likely, it is an old display, or something photoshopped to look like something new from Apple that is not from apple at all. -

You mean it was a year between the time 10.3 was released, and 10.4 was announced? The time between when 10.3 is released, and 10.4 was released, is probably going to be the thicker end of a year and a half, and even then, Apple was probably working on it way before 10.3 was released. Hell, maybe it was originally planned for 10.3? The difference between Microsoft and Apple is, Apple doesn't promise what it doesn't think it can deliver... The only notable exception being (as far as I remember) Home on iPod.

An iPod is a fun, and actually reasonably economical solution to this problem. So much so that it was a feature that Apple promised to integrate into the Panther release of OS X (10.3):

However it was pulled. Speculation centered on the notion that the iPod is not designed for usage patterns that entail extended continuous disk activity. But, I've not read a conclusive explanation for the feature's disappearance.

Speaking of business practices...
MacRumors is reporting they changed their "Freedom of Music Choice" petition because they didn't like the feedback they received.

This is the iMacPure speculation, but pulling various of the latest rumors together (see macrumors.com), it makes sense that the new iMac has a similar quasi-portable form factor. On your desktop it connects to a stand, which in turn connects to keyboard, mice, etc. But the whole computer is in the display (as has been previously rumored to be the design of the new iMacs). Take it off the display, and you can use it like a tablet, hang it on the wall and watch dvds (or tv?) - maybe even with a bluetooth remote. Even move it between multiple stands.
It's like an iBook with the display where the keyboard would be.
Of course, this is pure speculation - but it would finally tie together the rumors about hangable displays and the new cpu-behind-the-display form factor.

In Apple's last quarterly statement they announced that the iTunes Music Store had made a slim profit. It is noted in the quarterly conference call and here is a transcript.
I assume the profit was only due to the economies of scale as they can only be earning 0.5-1c a song. -

This feature was called "Home on iPod" and was to be part of Panther but was pulled pre-release. (more here or here)
This would be the single biggest feature inthe history of a PDA and perhaps it will be 'held' by Apple until they do what Steve said they would not do and create a new Apple PDA to replace the Netwton from years gone by. Apple already has Ink Well handwriting technology which has been well reviewed by those who review such technologies.

I sympathize. This is always an issue when companies, but particularly Apple it seems, upgrade a model line.
My advice is first, enjoy what you have which is the best digital music player in the world and second, be sure to check the rumor sites before major Apple purchases. This site even has a buyers guide that advises you where in the product life cycle an Apple product is.

I usually run at 5 since I don't have the time to read it all, but I also via preferences, modify the funny comments up. I love Slash, its a breeze for large stories that just choke up on messaging boards, such as Yahoo's or other sites that might use vBulletin. These just don't cut the mustard when you have several hundred comments and rising, and you just want to get some good comments from the board, or try to have or a decent web-board discussion. Slash allows you to receive only the good if you like, or dive into the drek very easily and coherently, What I would like to see is Google News taking on Slash, and adding comment section under their news blurbs.

Even with their extra 1GHz, the G5 still beats them by more then 200 points, and CineBench 2003 1.0 isn't even optimized for the G5! Especially now, when comparing 32-bit chips to 64/32-bit chips, you cannot compare machines simply on their clockspeed. Even intel has come to this fact, giving their chips numbers based on their power instead of their clockspeed. -

MacOS X runs fine on a 400Mhz G3 iMac. A 400Mhz G3 PowerMac with upgraded GPU would be able to handle the graphics side of this easily under OS X.
Looks fantastic, its also great to use and the funniest bit is all of the Windows and Mac people looking at a GUI which looks cooler than the best efforts of MS and Apple.
Cool yes, but good looking? What are you on?!? It's even worse than XP!

With WWDC just days away, the first Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) information and screenshots appears to have been leaked. According to unconfirmed sources, Apple will reportedly provide developers with a Mac OS X 10.4 Preview copy at WWDC on Monday. These screenshots provided reportedly come from this upcoming developer preview.
(Of note, the screenshots come from a previously unconfirmed source, and as a result may spark the usual debates of legitimacy -- though on casual inspection, do appear real ( removed )
Overall Mac OS X 10.4 is said to not hold any dramatic changes from Mac OS X 10.3.
The preview is labeled "Version 10.4 Pre-release" (removed) and build number 8A162 ( removed ).
A new version of Safari (v2.0) is bundled with the release and offers at least two new features. These include support for RSS news feeds as well as a new "Private Browsing" mode. Private Browsing allows users to browse without keeping a history of pages viewed.
System Preferences (removed) has been tweaked yet again, with the addition of an iTunes-like search function on the top right ( removed ) which hilights relevant control panels in real time. As the search gets narrowed ( removed ) so do the control panels that are hilighted.
In addition, Apple has added new security features to their firewall, most significantly a Stealth Mode ( removed ) which should "Ensures that any uninvited traffic receives no response -- not even an acknowledgement that your computer exists."
Perhaps the most dramatic change, however, is the inclusion of a new Expose feature called Dashboard ( removed ). Dashboard appears to be a Gadget/Widget based utility which provides users with a quick access (invoked by user-specified function key) to frequently used tools/applications. The tools available to users in the Tiger build include Address Book, Calculator, Calendar, iTunes, Stickies and World Clock. The tools provided however, are heavily themed with un-Mac OS X-like styles. It's assumed that developers will be able to provide additional "Gadgets".
Confirmation or invalidation of these images should come at WWDC next week.

Actually, as far as I can see, the GNAA were in fact the first to release screenshots of the OS to MacRumors.com.
If you look at the first screenshot story it gives credit to "Gary Niger and Ron Delsner of GNAA". LOL -
This should be funny actually
Looking forward to seeing just how the zealots deal with this. Lets see - we will either see attempts to deflect away from the fact that there almost are no games on the Mac (however it is getting better admittedly with Doom3 planned etc) or we will see the obligatory "games dont matter" arguments (fair enough if you only use your computer for work). No doubt we will see things along the lines of the usual "Apple invented x" where x in this case is games, or perhaps we will be told that there are more games on the Mac than any other platform (no seriously - it would not surprise me to see people write this - if they also believe it then we are getting into scary territory).
Here is something else I have learned about Mac culture - take a look at all the message boards like MacRumors etc. See - there is this cultural thing where they all post the spec of their machine, often with (I'm not kidding) the brand of their memory! From what I can see, those who have the best PowerMac or most iPods are revered.
Here I will attempt to throw the zealot mind into confusion - you see - I just ordered a DP2.5Ghz PowerMac, into which I will be throwing about 4Gb of RAM. This puts me (for now) at the top of the Mac food chain, meaning that my statement here cannot be modded down! -

Re:I don't follow the numbersThis press release from the contractor seems pretty adamant about claiming 25TF, asserting "second only to the Earth Simulator" which seems to exclude a simple numeric typo.
Both c|net and Mac Rumors say 15, though, which is as you say much more plausible. Given the degree of confusion, I wouldn't be too sure about other details such as interconnects or price tags... or even number of nodes; perhaps 1566 is an initial confuguration, later growing signifigantly larger to account for the 25TF figure.

And there it is - it can be loud or quiet, depending on use - so when you called my comment half right and half assed, you were completely wrong. I was very informed on this topic, and I have no bias towards either PC or Mac as anyone who knows me could tell you. 8 to 9 fans in a system like this? That's insane. My PC has half that, and I run it under full load consistently (SETI, DNET, Movie Rendering, etc) in Colorado, where temps are in the high 80's to 90's all summer long, and I didn't build a machine that needs 8 to 9 freaking fans. I have a high performance graphics card, high performance memory, and a fast AMD cpu - and I'm willing to bet my life that my machine is quieter than any Apple G5 on the market. And, then there's your comment:
"Do not confuse the G5 with some of the homebuilt Athlon abominations that have poor layout, poor airflow, and require multiple screaming fans."
Trust me, I won't, and didn't. I compared a G5 to a machine I would build, or anybody could these days for that matter using very common cases, fans, and power supplies. My machine is not an abomination that requires screaming fans, I use Panflo low rpm fans, and my case is more than sufficently cool. Everything else in my system requires passive heatsinks and runs quit well thank you.
While you may have a quiet G5, many people don't - so you should check yourself before calling me half right and half assed buddy. -

If you look over at MacRumors.com They talk about a Wall Street Journal article where Steve Jobs(Pixar/Apple CEO) complains about HD-DVD not having "adequate copy protection methods." So Is he complainging about having to use M$ DRM, or what? I can't get to the DVD forums site to see what the spec actually says about DRM.
What's interesting to me here is that 2 of the biggest console makers are backing different DVD standards. I'm guessing the XBox2 will play HD-DVDs and the PS3 will play Blu-Ray, akes the next-gen consoles a bit more interesting.

Okay, yes, I'm AC'ing the reply, but as the OP, how in the world is that flamebait? Seriously -- I'm a daily G4 iMac user/owner, a 13 year Macintosh user, and a Mac stock owner. I like Macs. A lot. I'm not trying to start a fight; I'm legitimately disappointed, as are most of the Macrumors.com readers who've commented. (Right now it's "Rating (85 Positives; 261 Negatives)".)
1.) Apple missed its promised goal. They could've released *one* 3 GHz G5 and pretended to have met it. That's not flamebait, that's a lack of reliability from Apple. Depending on IBM was a problem here.
2.) The price of entry for being a Powermac owner is up in a way that's cleverly hidden with the Superdrive downgrade -- which means it's going to take a while longer before I can consider entering the G5 market, and I imagine a few others. Though I'll rightfully take a Redundant on point 1.), I'm not sure I deserve one here.
3.) There were rumors that Apple was going to try to clearn out the 1.6's at a nice price. That would've cut the burn from 2.), but it didn't happen. That's disappointing too, though obviously it shows what kind of stock you should put in rumors.
4.) This point, obviously, was a bit of a joke. I think the liquid cooling to get the G5 temp down at 2.5 GHz is great. I wonder if there's a chance that -- plus a smaller heatsink -- will make it into the G5 Powerbook. I have to doubt it (energy consumption), but it is a space-saver, I'd imagine.
Anyhow, there you go. Pearls before swine! -

Apple *could have* released this, because the founder is ex-Apple, but Steve Jobs rejected it:

I thought that was a bad move when I first read it, but in hindsight, he possibly saw a conflict with the IPod strategy.
In any event, you'll probably get your wish as the IPod is halfway there anyway. It's got the hard drive and some basic PDA functions, now it just needs full-blown PDA action. -

I prophesized that any European version would sell tracks for 99 pence per track instead of the equivalent of 99 US cents, or even 99 EU cents.
The rumours I've read (here and here for example) say the tracks will be EUR1.29, which is around GBP0.86, which is around USD1.54.
I hope you're wrong, and the tracks are going to be 13p cheaper than your 99p prediction, but it's still 30p more expensive than the US price. -
