Or use Ref spoof for FireFox :)Firefox has this cool extension called RefSpoof which lets you spoof HTTP referrers. All you do is give it a link like spoof://www.nytimes.com/;ref://google.com to get the desired effect.
But the real hack is to include a greasemonkey hack for nytimes.com called nytspoof .

Re:Can Firefox be marketed?Currently you can't deploy Firefox in the enterprise and lock down its features and settings, but that is expected in 1.5. The basic rendering engine of the Mozilla browser Gecko is used all over in browsers (Wikipedia's list):
- Mozilla Application Suite - Mozilla the web browser, mail client, etc*
- Mozilla Firefox - The mentioned applications, never browse the web without it*
- AOL for Mac OS X uses Gecko, why doesn't AOL for Windows is the eternal question.
- Aphrodite* Renegade project working on UI tweaks
- Beonex Communicator* - Another option to Mozilla, cross platform
- Camino for Mac OS X, Mozilla project for OSX
- CompuServe 7.0 for Windows and Mac OS X (The now AOL service)
- DocZilla for Windows and Linux, SGML/XML/HTML web browser.
- Epiphany for GNU/Linux (Default Gnome browser)
- Galeon for Linux (Old Default Gnome browser)
- IBM Web Browser for OS/2*
- Kazehakase for Linux is a more featured browser, plans more...
- ManyOne* 3D browser?
- Minimo (web browser for small devices)
- Netscape 6.0 and later versions* (of course)
And in other applications (like):
ActiveState Komodo (visual development environment for Perl, Python and more on Windows and Linux) [4] The Liferea (news aggregator for Linux), The Mozilla ActiveX Control (allows ActiveX developers to easily embed Gecko in applications) The Mozilla Calendar (calendar and personal information manager)* The Mozilla Thunderbird The (email/newsgroup client and news aggregator)* Nvu (a web authoring application)* and Gecko# for Windows (.NET Binding for Gecko)
* Also uses Gecko to render its entire user interface via XUL.
You can either choose to adopt the rendering engine for your own applications or hopefully in the future deploy it with rights management. Personally, I think that personalized installations are the next needed step. If admins can roll out Firefo -

Re:The return of the Push Internet...
I think the new RSS wheel finally wins this one. I never got into IE Channels or Pointcast because it was all about geewhiz graphics and not enough about the content. Now I subscribe to 60+ feeds, which I read through Feed On Feeds which I always keep in the first tab of Firefox (thanks, Mini-T). The feeds are exactly what I want: only one inserts advertisement-only content (SpaceDaily through that damn NewsIsFree), the other handful that advertise are smart enough to use Google RSS adverts.
-
Re:A dud?
Get Sage it works within the mozilla extension system within the browser and is under a 100k download. It makes it easier at least for me than the current Google implentation as I have to viewing that page to use the feeds whereas with Sage I can be browsing Slashdot and see the RSS stories in a sidebar.

Not to mention the remaining 1.91M they spent on other projects. FreeBSD just one of about 40 projects mentoring 400 students. The Nmap Security Scanner project is mentoring 10 of them, who have already produced great work! A list of their credentials and projects is available here. I'll give an update on their progress at my Defcon Presentation this Friday at 10AM.
Meanwhile, many of the other SoC mentors have posted details on the projects being worked on. For example,

Re:I am glad that they are doing somethingRather than wanting a so-called "fix" to counteract malice, there might be another way: Greasemonkey might be used to correct these maliciously broken sites. Many scripts exist, perhaps one or more apply or one could be authored. I don't know for sure that Greasemonkey is early enough in the chain to do it, or if the HTML is so bad it can't be salvaged.
Do you have any examples of these sites? I don't see a list in your journal. I see sites linked to your home page but it doesn't appear to say which sites are MSIE-only.

OSS Yahoo! Toolbar ReduxConsidering Slashdot has managed to dupe a five-month old story, I figured I'd dupe my five-month old comment... One update: The Community developed OSS Yahoo! Companion for Mozilla website is currently way out of date. To get a current version of the toolbar, go to the mailing list archives. The latest build should be attached to one of the mid-July emails.
As one of the more minor members of the community-created Yahoo! Companion for Mozilla, I'd like to point out that there is another option if you distrust/dislike the official version.
Peter Buergner, Dave Viner, Brian Kennelly and a host of others have created an excellent alternative for folks who like the functionality of the Yahoo! Toolbar but prefer Firefox/Mozilla. The current version (0.54) is a bit out of date - a new version should be hitting the servers soon. It is much further along than the official version, with full internationalization support (including Chinese), disposable address support for Yahoo! Mail, the ability to remove the Search Box (a function the official version has apparently removed from both the IE and FF versions) and a few others.
I've looked at the official source code and it's nicely written - probably a bit cleaner than ours, truth be told. We've had quite a bit of discussion on the mailing list about adding features not found on any of the official toolbars (including dynamically folding the Yahoo! bookmarks into the Mozilla/FF bookmarks, the ability to redirect menu selections into new tabs, and a bunch of other stuff). Recent "nightly" builds (more like weeklies, but hey...) have included about:config support for some optional functionality.
Most of us on the Companion team are happy to see official support for Firefox by Yahoo!. It shows that FF is really gaining traction, and will help a lot of Yahoo! users to migrate to the FF platform. Hopefully, most the of the newbs will use the official version (saving us some headaches on the mailing list), and when people want to step up to a more feature-rich version, they can upgrade to our version. One thing the team has been very concerned about is making sure that our version works on all Mozilla platforms, and in both Firefox and Mozilla Suite. Early word is that the official version works best on Firefox on WinXP - there seem to be minor problems using it with the Mozilla Suite, alternate themes and non-XP platforms (the code is all generic Javascript, so I expect those issues to be easily fixable). Our 0.54 build has some issues in Linux due to an improper set of permissions added to a directory it creates to store the Yahoo! feed. This has been fixed in the nightlies, or you can fix it by modifying the permissions of the yahootoolbar_saves directory in your Firefox profile (chmod 666 should do it).
Of course, our version could end up dying in the shade of the official version, but that's competition for you!
p.s. I know a lot of
/.ers prefer the Google toolbar, but lots of us have already invested a lot of time in the Yahoo! version and don't feel like switching. Besides, Yahoo! as a portal (currently) has a lot of things Google just doesn't provide - I track my portfolio there, have a My Yahoo! portal page with a lot of localized content, like the quick links to my local sports teams, etc. And, at this point, you've at least got to give Yahoo! credit for being the first to officially support the FF platform (though I have a feeling Google is going to come on very strong, given the recent hiring of Ben Goodger.) -
Re:Don't delete cookies
I have found CookieCuller to be very useful. It allows you to "protect" certain cookies and get rid of all the rest through a simple interface or - according to the FAQ - delete unprotected cookies automatically at browser startup. Works with Firefox and Mozilla.

Re:Personally
For Firefox, you can download search plugins for just about anything you want, and if you can't find one, writing them is pretty simple. To switch between the engines once installed, in Linux it's ctrl+up/down. I have Google, MSN and AllTheWeb in my Firefox. I'd imagine Safari has a similar way to change it.
I just wish Opera made it so simple. -
Re:Yahoo Releases Firefox Toolbar Beta
I use it for the bookmarks (and have been using it for a couple of months now - dunno why it took so long to post this "story").
Incidentally, this plugin has been available for well over a year as well. -

Re:BF series=dumbness
Running in with guns blazing like the movies doesn't work. If you have played Call of Duty or Counterstrike this should be second nature to you.
You think Counterstrike has realistic aiming? Nuh-uh.
Check out the Red Orchestra mod for UT2004, it's a total conversion eastern front WWII mod. The guns & aiming are true to life - you have to compensate for drop over distance, you can't effectively shoot from the hip, you must use ironsights, there's realistic weapon sway that increases as you hold your gun up, and the weapon sounds are accurate. It's as close to firing the real guns as you can get without actually doing it.
It's also more realistic than Call of Duty due to the annoying fact that in CoD, you usually have to shoot people more than once before they fall down.

I also remap controls
I use ESDF. It's much better than WASD in my opinon, because you have quicker access to more buttons, and keeps your fingers on the home keys. It was also the default config for Tribes 2, which was the first FPS I played for any length of time.
My usual setup:
ESDF for movement
G for grenade or throw gun (whichever applicable)
B for mines
H for beacons
A for zoom
T for zoom level or spray (w/a)
V for voice menu
Q for healthkit or use (w/a)
W for switch weapon
R for reload or pack (w/a)
X and C for anything
U for global chat and Y for team which is nice, because once you press it your right hand is on the home keys.
Depending on what the stances are (sprint, crouch, prone, etc) I'll use Z, Ctrl, Shift, and Alt. I also use shift and control as modifiers if the game supports it (shift-g for max grenade throw, ctrl-g for drop grenade ammo, etc)

New OSs Was:Inconsistent Rant
You'll get new operating systems when the underlying hardware changes OR when the "old" hardware becomes powerful enough to emulate "something else"
The automobile metaphore was insightful. The basic auto design has not changed since the 40's (back any further and you throw out your electric starter). What came next? The airplane.
The computer's basic purpose is to keep track of "stuff", a checkbook, a payroll, TCP/IP protocal session. The next "os" will not be recognizable as an "os" at all. It will feel more like the Arabian Nights Djinn (or Genie with the Light Brown Hair, if you will) than Windows XP, OSX, or GNOME/KDE.
It's not "where do you want to go today". It's "What is thy bidding, my Master?" Strap yourselves in, it's gonna be a bumpy flight.

Re:More details on the exploit...
People who don't understand this security flaw need to SHUT THE FUCK UP.
Oh, okay. Thank you for correcting my ignorance. (I'm serious, guys. Don't mod me troll.)
Greasemonkey 'adds' stuff to Javascript. Any page on the internet can use these additions.
If you have Greasemonkey installed, and Javascript enabled (Greasemonkey is rather pointless without Javascript anyway.), you are at risk.
You can't 'be safe' by only doing certain things, because the flaw is that any page on the internet can call Greasemonkey functions.
no one uses Greasemonkey on 'trusted' sites, we use(d) it to hack up stupid-ass pages that had eight square inch of content per page with the rest ads and fancy graphics.
Incorrect, actually. I use it on lots of sites to enhance functionality. You'll notice my random signature at the bottom, but I've also got a script that allows me to collapse comment trees. I also have a number of other scripts I use on different websites, and I write my own from time to time (actually, I wrote a little of SlashdotRndSig).
I can live without those, but I haven't uninstalled GM because I don't go anywhere that might do weird stuff to my computer, and when I do, I disable JS, Java, block Flash, and use Linux anyways. Sure, it's not "secure", but I think the risk isn't as bad as people make it out to be.It has nothing to do with you.
Wrong, see above.

You need Popups must die. The first one merely puts a little warning in the status bar. I can enable popups manually for any site I need to.
Apparently there are some about:config settings you can tweak that basically do the same thing, but I have no idea what they are.
As for the second one, of course it's not a popup, it's a stupid DHTML trick. A div overlapping the other text. I wonder if there's a way to tweak user stylesheets to make these unobtrusive... Sounds like a great idea for a Greasemonkey script! -

Re:Main advantage
q[ I'd be happy if firefox can just fix the CPU hammering/memory leak with Flash by 2.0.]q
Given that the issue in question also occurs in IE, Safari, and any other browser with a flash plugin regardless of OS I'd guess that this is not a browser bug.
My guess is that it's a race condition inside the Flash code itself. It doesn't appear on all systems, even if they are running the same OS/browser/flash revision (and viewing the same content).
At least with Firefox you can install Flashblock and not be annoyed by CPU gobbling flash unless you really want it. -
Why GreaseMonkey is more Secure then you think
First of all, the problem with GM is not with malicious user scripts, or at least that's only as much of a problem as malicious extensions, and user scripts may even be less so so they are easier to read.
The problem lies in the interaction between certain API's and the DOM. They aren't seperated, and a malicious page can use the API's to execute remove commands, including accessing local files.
That seems like a big problem, until you realize, as the people working on this do, that a malicious webpage must be in the included list to utilize this exploit.
In other words, site specific user scripts, what GM was designed to impliment, are only vulnerable if that site passes malicious javascript.
Non-site specific user scripts, like Linkify, are the issue. They can easily be disabled in Tools>Manage User Scripts. They can generally be identified because they have a "*" or other general includes instead of a specific site url.
Don't believe me? test it yourself, here, with the example exploit. If all you see is a blank page, then congratulations your GM is probably still secure.
