It's too american because they are raising a flag together. I think it's better if people don't consider NetBSD an american software project because developers are all over the world.

However, these angry troll/devil hybrids in sneakers trampling over what appears to be a lot of desktop computer hardware however, is evidently what is found in need of an update.

I can list a few likely reasons for changing this, off the top of my head:

One thing is that devils is a somewhat religious device, not found in all religions.

Then there is the aesthetics of this. The logo is just kinda ugly. These guys are not all that different in appearance from some football hooligans... and after all, there is a strong element of marketing here, whether we like it or not. Would you want to buy an operating systems from these guys?

Political correctness or accusations of same, marketing and aestetics aside, I would say it is just as much that the design of the monitors is becoming dated, since many of us now have relatively skinny LCDs, not fat CRT-based ones. If nothing else, the logo is becoming tecnically dated.

All these could, individually, be considered warrants for change.

If you're asking about the OS, it's pretty good. The troll below was thinking of OpenBSD -- and a bit off the mark -- but basically, think OpenBSD without the security focus, with the conveniences of FreeBSD (sometimes done better; pkgsrc is rather sweet, and claims to handle builds on Linux as well!), relatively small installation size, cutting-edge features, and of course, ridiculous portability. Definitely Just The Thing for that 486DX2-50 collecting dust (unless it's to be a firewall or bastion host - then you want OpenBSD), and quite useful anywhere else as well.

If you're planning an 'intensive' workload (more specifically, "if you're planning something that will actually put stress on a $2,000+ server"), then FreeBSD and soon DragonFly will be worth looking into. (DragonFly will be cool for other reasons, but then, I'm a fanboy.)

As to this logo business... Well, in a perfect world, people would use BSDs more often, and accept any lingering 'incorrectness' to the logo (it's supposed to be a daemon, not a demon, so the saying goes) as the price paid for getting a great, maintainable, don't-even-have-to-follow-GPL-sharealike-rules OS. But pragmatically, a lot of NetBSD core seems to work for Wasabi Systems -- call them the RedHat of NetBSD, but of course, the overall NetBSD community doesn't quite have the size and clout of the 'Linux community,' so keeping those guys fed is more intrinsic to the project's survival in the near term. If the logo's losing them contracts (and what's worse than losing a contract for nontechnical reasons?), then hey, maybe it's time for the weird to turn pro.

FreeBSD has for a long time been THE STUFF for speed, but that's not quite true longer since the release of Linux 2.6.

Ports offer a great advantage if you want to build stuff with your own options, but it requires time, bandwidth and some knowledge of what you are doing. The speed difference will probably not be worth it but atleast you don't have to use all those toolkits you don't like anyway.

Philosophy? Definitly, now we are talking. If you are a developer the BSD License let you enjoy the greatness of having all the source code at your hands without having to release your own works source just because you found a nice idea or borrowed some code.

But imho the great thing with all the BSDs are documentation. Sure you have manpages in Linux, sure there are howtos, and even install guides. But with the hundreds of Linux distributions and different places and names of files and modified content of them it doesn't come close to the documentation you have in any of OpenBSD, NetBSD or FreeBSD.

The SMC91C92 controller chip is fairly common, and googling for it found several references to cards based on it. Does "Focus EtherLAN II" mean anything to you? Take a look at this post from 1996 as a starting point.

The answer to your other question is that of course, there are, but as one with deep knowledge in this subject has taught me in my school, I think the distros made in Finland are far superior to those, which are not. :)

Hey, I've got an old RaQ2 MIPS that I've been looking for updates or more importnatly I new kernel but finding LINUX MIPS for the RaQ2 is next to impossible.

I've found that the Cobalt port of NetBSD works quite nicely. Unlike trying to run Linux on your RaQ2, you can actually get a current version of NetBSD for it (and not an unofficial and flakey patch either!).

trust that Linux support alone will be enough to push this thing into the low-end 64bit market.

Not just Linux. Solaris, FreeBSD, and NetBSD have working ports already.

On FreeBSD, the AMD64 architecture is a "Tier 1" platform, which means fully supported. See here.

On NetBSD, the port seems to be basically functional and mostly done and is expected to be included as part of the next release. See here

Sun has announced amd64 support along with amd64 hardware products as well (Opteron entry-level servers). See here and here. Solaris 10 (which isn't out yet, but which does have "early access" releases available to the public) supports it too. Sun is rumored to be working hard right now on tuning its own compiler to generate good amd64 code. And, significantly, Sun has been selling 64-bit machines for nearly 10 years, so they have pretty much solved the issues of integration, making it easy to manage the combination of 32-bit and 64-bit applications. (Older Sun machines can run either a 32-bit or 64-bit kernel and will automatically select 32-bit apps on the 32-bit kernel but 64-bit (unless unavailable) on the 64-bit kernel with the same OS install image.)

All of which is good, because the x86 market tends to procastinate, and the 32-bit to 64-bit transition is IMHO a bit overdue. (And because it is possible that it will make Intel pee its pants if this really takes off.)

Hold on a minute, there is no "other hand". AMD64 is not officially supported yet on NetBSD either:

Netbsd is nice and portable, but then, so is linux (those of you who have been snoozing for the past 5 years might be surprised); look to debian for a good example.

I would buy it, just as long as I don't have to compile anything (recompiling your kernel on a blender takes surprisingly long).

Even though compiling a custom kernel on your blender may take a while, you could always cross-compile the kernel on your relatively fast microwave oven.

OpenBSD is a better firewall (pf is very nice), but NetBSD is a bit more portable (in the unlikely event that OpenBSD won't run on it). I think the platform you are looking for is called mac68k or m68k.

Stop spreading FUD here. NetBSD shows 17 cpu types. Yes, Linux still supports more with ia64, ppc64, s390, etc. so at least your counting is somewhat off on both sides.

Your counts totally ignore edian issues. A playstation 2 and an SGI machine can't run the same binaries even though they are both MIPS because one is big endian and the other is little endian. ARMv2 is completely different architecturally than later versions. There are many other examples.

x86-64 is still a work in progress on both platforms and so is ppc64 (it's only a couple weeks old :)) but both are in heavy development and will quickly improve on all OSes. Obscure embedded platforms like v850, cris, h8300, etc. would make me nervous to use in a large production. They are not widely developed for and what info you can dig up suggests that they could be quirky with all the compiler weirdness, etc. that hasn't been shaken out yet. I'd much rather go with a more matured platform like ARM, MIPS, M68k, etc. regardless of the OS being chosen for the application.

There are times when a platform is more mature/complete/etc. (PA-RISC on linux is better supported) but NetBSD is generally very consistent and complete across all of the 40 platforms it currently supports.

The bottom line is use the right tool for the job. If I have a PA-RISC or s390 or wanted to build a PVR then I'd probably choose Linux and I would choose a BSD for most of the rest of my needs. You might choose a little different but both are good tools and very capable.

To get back ontopic. I use pkgsrc on several platforms ( BSD, Linux, OS X, Irix) and these fixes helped out on all platforms. I love the work that everyone has put into pkgsrc and can't wait to see it grow and develop more. Someone else needs to test it on Solaris Sparc/x86 since I don't have a box currently running it. :)

Does Linux build to all those CPUs out of a single source-tree? Does it build a complete OS? FWIW, there was some similar discussion on netbsd-advocacy a while back...

BSD kernels are unencumbered by System V legacy code, copyright and control - which is basically why Apple's OS X isn't a licensee of SCO's UNIX copyright.

I love the fact that when mentioning free UNIX only Linux gets a mention. This is despite the fact that a huge swathe of ISPs run some sort of *BSD for hosting, security, firewalls, etc.

Not only are they free in both senses of the word but there is no viral GNU license which obliges derivative works from adhering to the license.

If GNU is challenge and Linux destroyed then it will only delay the pervasiveness of "free" Unicies - IBM et al will simply adopt a BSD kernel. BSD kernels were created for the specific tasks of removing the old AT&T/System V licensed code!

The authors need a little perspective. From the story:

Nobody has more expertise in porting software to different platforms than the Debian project.

They also state that it may be the most broadly deployable OS in existance because it runs on 11 architectures. No mean feat, I'm sure. But others run on more platforms. At least 17 CPU architectures and who knows how many "platforms" :-) Still, I'm excited about this new installer and can't wait to see if/how PGI integrates with it.
