Re:Mormons Re:On the first day..
We all know only the Mormons go to heaven.. Everybody else goes to hell.. unless god's armies need beefing up.
I may have posted this here previously, but it's worth a repeat. This episode of The Grim Reaper Show... http://newgrounds.com/portal/view/72146 provides a bit of insight into what people of various beliefs can look forward to.
Okay, perhaps not, but it's still, to quote the Reaper from this later episode... http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/226663, pretty fuckin' hilarious.
Sign me up for that Floating Island of Mandango, please. -

So.... (FP?)
Did they hire the guy who made Fishy, was it just a coincidence that both of their games involve having a fish that eats smaller things, or was someone at Popcap one of the 2 million views of the game?

Re:Who gets to name these things?
Hopefully, they will call the next one The Floating Island of Mandango.

Re:Whatever
That still won't necessarily lead to (literally) gigabytes of memory being used, and I'm speaking from experience; I spend a lot of time on http://www.newgrounds.com/ , and thus see a lot of flashes each day, man of them in the four to five MB range.
Mozilla (Seamonkey, in my case) does have memory leaks that are large enough to drive a truck, through, that's for sure - after a day, its memory usage will typically be up to somewhere between 150 and 300 MB -, and it crashes a lot, too - once a day on average, and that's using 1.7.12, the last version in a branch that should be in deep maintenance mode.
But I can't say it's using *gigabytes* of memory, and it's never done that for me, either. -
Re:You have liberated...
I'm hoping there's enough of my corpse left for the Valkiries to carry me back to Valhalla, to spend Eternity drinking and whoring with Thor and that bunch; I'm sure Heaven would be fucking boring.
Bah! I'm signed up to go to the Floating Island of Mandango instead. :D http://newgrounds.com/portal/view/72146 -

Re:Restrict Software Sale!
This flash goes a long way in describing the philosophy of liberty. I'm sure there's loopholes in there if you look hard enough, but still love this flash.
Disclaimer: this thing is text and image based, with music in the background. That's good if you can't put on speakers, bad if you hate reading. -
Re:Sounds cool...
If they did it as a giant phallus, then people might mistake it for one of the ancient gods from a dimension beyond our comprehension, like those in this video: http://newgrounds.com/portal/view/226663 (Click the "Watch This Movie" link to see it.)

You can trust the shover robot.
The pusher robot says shoving is the answer. But can we really trust him?
NO! He is malfunctioning.
Vote Shover Robot in 2006. Together, we can protect the future. -
Re:Good news and mostly bad news
Embedded media (particularly, Flash) *is* a large part of the Internet as we know it. And unlike you, I'm not convinced that embedded media is automatically a bad thing, either; I certainly dislike ActiveX for its proprietary, windows-only nature and security nightmares, and PDF (PDF documents on the *web*, that is) for its duplicating of what should be done in HTML and CSS, but Flash at least seems to be doing something that you can't easily do with open standards, and the player is reasonably cross-platform, too.
Of course, like all technology, Flash *can* be abused, but hey, sites without Flash can also have a horrible design - Flash is neither necessary nor sufficient for that.
I don't know about you, but I at least, as a frequent visitor of sites like http://newgrounds.com/ for example, would be rather disappointed if Flash went away or if you had to pay for the player due to licensing fees extorted by Eolas. -
TV and Video Online
I don't have a tv, nor do I want one, but every now and then I want to flake out to some non-interactive entertainment. Here are the sites I've found for free tv and video on the web (that I can remember at 1:48 a.m.)
http://edition.cnn.com/ -News fix
http://www.homestarrunner.com/toons.html -Not tv or video per se, but strongbad email flash animations are a hoot and close enough
http://tv.yahoo.com/feature/supernatural.html -The show Supernatural online, although I haven't watched it yet. Featured on /.
http://www.atomfilms.com/ -Everybody knows this one; marginally good
http://video.freevideoblog.com/ -Alot of crap, the odd good video
http://video.google.com/ -Random
http://www.ifilm.com/ -See also atomfilms
http://www.newgrounds.com/ -Way cool, homepage worthy!
http://tv.reuters.com/ - more news video than cnn
http://www.rocketboom.com/vlog - ???, Profit! Actually, I don't know what to say
http://portal.omroep.nl/uitzendinggemist/ -Dutch TV up the wazoo
http://mediahopper.com/portal.htm -1041 tv stations from all over the world listed and ready to watch (as far as I can tell)
http://video.search.yahoo.com/ -Stuff n' things
http://www.youtube.com/ -People upload and share their videos online... you've been warned!
I should add everything here is "family friendly", as far as I'm aware: no porn, uberviolence or gratuitous advertising (if I've somehow overlooked something, I apologise). -

MC Hawking
I don't listen to a lot of nerdcore, and I have to say that I don't really listen to it to enjoy the music so much as to enjoy the lyrics and humor. I do have some MC Hawking that I listen to every now and then, he has a flash video of one of his songs that's pretty funny.

How about Flash?
I know much of Slashdot's audience can't stand Flash, but I've had quite a bit of experience with it over the past five years -- I was a Flash game developer -- and I've got to say, ActionScript has become o very powerful language. Don't be fooled by its name: It's not a scripting language. It's an entirely object-oriented similar to Java and C#. You should feel right at home with it.
The upside is a very rapid development phase: you could bang out a prototype in a couple of hours, depending on complexity. It's also an almost-ubiquitous platform: With the exception of *nix (of which I know very little, and as such refrain from commenting), the player is reportedly installed in 90% of all browsers.
The does-side is that you have little-to-no control over lower-level functions, such as memory-management; no direct disk access outside of 'Flash cookies'; and absolutely no access to a user's video card. It's also quite an expensive application -- it starts at $499.00 USD for the standard version.
Quite a number of amazing games have been developed using Flash, most notably (IMHO) Alien Hominid, which, ironically, has been turned into a full-fledged console game.
That's just my two cents, at any rate.

Yatta! The flash madness continues
The only flash movies that... ahem, struck me as much as AYBABTU were these:
Sticky Night of Love
And of course, the Yatta flash.
Original Yatta video for context.
Yatta Flash
Plenty of Engrish and epilepsia-inducing pictures.
Thank you slashdot. Oh, boy do I look forward to having my friends send me a link to this funny AYBABTU thing that they just discovered. ;-) -
Admit it, you love stupid memes
Stupid memes are those stupid inside jokes you have with friends, except that the inside is enormous. Furthermore, the jokes get older much more quickly, so people end up trying to out-weird the most recent meme.
In case you missed it, this is the best of the more recent Zero Wing parodies. -
You want ice cream cone?
Can't beat Mario Twins, and it's been around for years.

Re:What's the deal-yo?
While they're not entirely inovative, I reccomend you take a look at both Viewtiful Joe and Alien Hominid (which started life as a flash game). They're excellent examples of great fun, great looking games that forego realism and even 3D graphics.

The following is provided for the 5 people who don't know what Something Awful is. Transcript as follows:Corn_Boy - wassup
Corn_Boy - what is the time there?
Lowtax - 11 pm
Corn_Boy - wow, why are you woking so late?
Corn_Boy - what kind of work do you do
Lowtax - VE and SA stuff
Corn_Boy - whats that
Lowtax - VE - Virginian Empire SA - Secretary's Alliance
Corn_Boy - is the secretarys alliance like a union
Lowtax - Kind of. Mostly we just go over to Marcie's house after work and gossip, go to the rodeos, wash cars, etc etc. We also lobby congress.
Lowtax - What do you think about robots?
Corn_Boy - the ones that make the cars?
Lowtax - No, space robots
Corn_Boy - I dont know, I havent met one yet, but I guess they would be cool
Lowtax - I am building a space robot, that's why I asked.
Corn_Boy - ok, will it be going into space?
Lowtax - I am trying. It will be a very useful robot. I am giving it AI. Do you know what that stands for?
Corn_Boy - who is al? do you not like him and is that why you are giving him to the robot
Lowtax - No, AL is my friend, AI means "Abnormal Interests". I learned that and I'm programming my robot to act like a human.
Corn_Boy - like in the disney movie
Lowtax - What is Disney? I don't watch movies, I had to use the parts from my VCR to build my space robot.
Corn_Boy - from a vcr, wow, how does that work
Lowtax - I will tell you, but it is a secret so you can't tell anybody
Corn_Boy - ok, I wont, I promise
Lowtax - I am using the CLOCK in it to have the robot tell time!!!
Corn_Boy - will it have a gun
Lowtax - NO! I am non-violent, and I do not enjoy guns and violence!!! It will have a broom and fishtank and vaccuum. The Ultimate Space Robot!
Corn_Boy - you must be real smarte to be albe to make a space robot, my parents have a dvd player thing, can you turn that into a robot, it has a lasre in it
Lowtax - I can turn everything into Space Robots!
Corn_Boy - have you made many other robots?
Lowtax - Yes, but they don't work the way they were supposed to. One was a BIG ACCIDENT my friend
Corn_Boy - what happened
Lowtax - Grandma fell down the stairs
Corn_Boy - did the robot push her was she alright
Lowtax - I misprogrammed it. I tried to do good, but the robot jumped up and pushed grandma's head and she started spitting and her teeth flew out and the robot shot sparks and grandma fell down the stairs onto my uncle.
It was the worst Christmas ever.
Corn_Boy - oh no! sparks, did anything catch on fire
Lowtax - Grandma did, but I got a Pusher robot to shove her outside into the snow.
Corn_Boy - that was lucky, we have christmass in the sumer here, so no snow, you are lucky that you live there, very lucky!
Lowtax - Where do you live?!?
Corn_Boy - I am in new zealand
Lowtax - Wow! I was going to build a robot for a company in New Zealand! They are named "Ochnop Technologies" - have you heard of them?
Corn_Boy - no sorry, I do not know much about the robot industre
Lowtax - You should, some day robots will be in your house! Wether you know it or not!
Pusher robots
Shover robots
Force robots
Bumping robots
you know!
Corn_Boy - I hope that they dont go crasy and shoot me
Lowtax - ROBOTS DO NOT SHOOTS Guns shoots and robots dont go crazy unless you tell them too.
The Pusher robot I am making will shove around the blind people and take them to the store. Then the Shover robot will push bread into their throats.
Corn_Boy - you mucst be a very nice person to be making helper robots
Lowtax - I like to do my part. One day my Space Robots will revolutionize the world! And space!
Lowtax - Space has a terrible power!
Corn_Boy - do you mean like the worm-holes from star trek
Lowtax - I do not watch star trek, it is LIES!@! Space has a terrible po -
No, no, no! You got it all wrong!
The best way for robots to help blind people is to shove them.

I can't afford Flash
So if you're claiming that Flash games like this one can become console games, the problems remain that 1. a lot of un(der)employed indie developers have to work on near-zero startup capital, which means no spending $499.00 plus shipping plus tax for Macromedia Flash, and 2. I haven't seen one Flash game that tries to read from my USB gamepad.

Release the damn game, 'cause I want to play!!!
I been waiting so long for this game that I can start singing the song or watch the music video instead.

The competition...
Personally, I think the open category is between Alien Hominid and Gish.
Alien Hommid is the only non-PC (PS2 and Gamecube) game in competition, and has a very solid following via Newgrounds since the game started as a flash-based game.
Gish wins out in both looks and physics. Epically the physics. It also shares a fan base from Newgrounds as they advertised heavily on NG and post NG content.
Personally, I hope Alien Hommid wins. I have no real reason that it beats out the other. Both are very good games.
Now next year, I'm hoping Antidote sweeps the awards!

Mod Paerent Up!
You, my friend, know where it's at.
Here's what I've got to say about this: copyright infingement is bad. In most ways, it is as bad as theft because in most situations, you are not paying for something you would have paid for (as the grandparent said). I really can't see why someone would complain about the MPAA cracking down on a crime.
That being said, movies (and music) are being sold at annoyingly high prices, and, illegal or not, it's going to be difficult for MPAA and RIAA to catch up with new file-sharing technologies.
The upside to this is that most good musicians play music because they like music. So, say the music industry cumbled down. No disaster. People who actually enjoy making music will continue to create and distribute it, and surely at least some people who enjoy the music would donate to these people to encourage them to keep making music.
MPAA is a bit different. It's hard to make a good movie without a decent budget. But, there is an upside: all those celebrities (which I personally hate) would stop making millions, which I'd enjoy watching very much. I can't be sure how good movies would be without *ahem* forced payment, but keep in mind that some people will pay just for the sake of going to a theatre. Sustainable? We'll see. If the movie industry crumbles down, something good should follow. -
On Evil (apologies for being off-topic)
Feel free to pepper the following with "IMO" where appropriate... here we go.
I would describe evil as "causing harm for personal gain without consent". Yes, that's a slippery definition.
Basically, if some terrorist commits murder/suicide in hopes of a good afterlife, then I would classify the terrorist as evil. If the terrorist did it strictly because of beliefs, I wouldn't call it evil, but personally, I would call it ignorant, and definetly against the views of Libertarianism as they explained here (not that all Libertarians would necessarily agree with this piece).
By the way here's evil on Wikipedia. -
