Useful sites
http://ivtv.sourceforge.net/ Join the ivtv-devel mailing list if you want to follow the project and learn about its current status. The project page itself is too far out of date to be very helpful.
http://ivtv.no-ip.com/ The ivtv driver is under heavy development. This site by a developer named Chris Kennedy has newer releases of the driver. 0.2.0-rc works well for me. -
My PVR-350 works fine.
I bought my PVR-350 in October, I think. It works fine. I had to take a few poorly documented steps.
Get a newer ivtv driver. As you know, the stable drivers are way out of date. The official ivtv site is worthless for new hardware. I use one of the 0.2.0-rc drivers.
Get a newer kernel for its tuner.c because the newer PVR-350 cards have a new tuner, the LG TAPE iirc. I did not want to recompile the whole kernel. I grabbed tuner.c from 2.6.9, stuck it in my kernel source tree and compiled the modules.
I suggest joining the ivtv-devel mailing list because these drivers are very new and you may benefit from advice if you decide to make your card work under Linux. -

Re:Some registrars will protect you
I've been using www.buydomains.com for some time now, and they are really good, and also really cheap ($16 a year). You can forward request to the domain name (including email) using their DNS, and in combination with www.no-ip.com it makes it possible for me to run a proffesionally looking web server from my home machine. They also have locking, I descovered after reading the article. And all of those features are included for in the basic package for free.

Re:"private networks"
Go to no-ip.com and register a domain, then use their dynamic DNS service along with their client software. This will give you a hostname that always points to your box, even if your IP changes.
-
Integrated != Closed
Because if the group doing the integrating decides you dont need it, you dont get it.
Unless the group doing the integrating decides, on a lark, to join, embrace, and even contribute to the open standard/software movement. 'Cause then you might be able to still decide what you want or need.
But that couldn't possibly come from some over priced, consumer-electronic excuse for a computer, now could it? No way.
Just keep doing yer thing, man... -
Cool hack...
But would you trust it? Would you REALLY want to use a hack on top of something that somebody else provided for free for your mission-critical data?
Neither did I. What I don't get is the advantage. I mean, using no-ip.com and your average DSL account, you can turn your home computer into an "online storage" at a cost of around around $0.50 per gigabyte.
Wow. Those google guys are sure being nice! I mean, you gotta love these people, right?
For a community that seems to love google, this sure seems like a stupid, wasteful, and mean thing to do. -
No-IP.com
I use http://www.no-ip.com/. They have an open source client that I use for a few FreeBSD servers.

I like no-ip.com
I just recently got ddns service from http://www.no-ip.com/. They've got a number of different levels of service starting with free. They appear to be a stable company with a good business model. They've got Linux, Windows, and Mac clients for download. I run FreeBSD which has a port of their linux client in
/usr/ports/dns/noip. -

GBA RAM packs
You can actually use the GBA for a lot more than just UNIX -- one can import flash RAM packs and then put whatever they want on it. Check out some options.
You can even put different emulators and ROMs all on the same cartridge and then use a shell to organize and manage everything. I have an NES, SMS adn PC Engine Emulator with some of my favorite games from each system as well as 4 full GBA ROM images.
You can also check out one of my GUI interfaces to use with the shell.
I think we're a pretty underground group here (GBA flash RAM users), but who knows -- mabye I just used /. to expose the world to the many functions of the GBA(?)! -
Re:Lots of issuesNostalgia aside, I love playing the older "classics" but the problem I have is with the controller. My PS2 controller just doesn't work the same for games designed to be played with joysticks.
I solved that problem HERE for using old Atari joysticks with the Stella Emulator. Only catch is it is a hack on the Xbox not PS2. This brings up another point . . . will they be using old school style joysticks on their stand-alone product? I hope so because I only have two joysticks left and need a couple spares. I RTFA and couldn't tell what the standalone was going to use for user input.

Finding rare Videogame and Anime soundtracks is a pain in the buttocks.
Well, first of all, I wasn't really talking about rare soundtracks.
That said, try installing DC++ (DirectConnect) and then go to a pretty good hub at vgmcentral.no-ip.com for starters. Read the rules at http://vgmcentral.no-ip.com/ first. Mainly VG soundtracks, obviously, but anime and other stuff mixed in as well.
That's really the best place I can direct you without knowing exactly what you're looking for....Other than that, get creative with Google search terms.

End spam - Open SourceFirst, on an old computer I had that was just sitting around growing dust, I set up my own "in house" email server using qmail , on GNU/Linux/Mandrake. It was dead easy to do.
I pluged it into my router and opened ports 25 & 110 for it.
Then I added Fetchmail .
And then the neatest thing since sliced bread; TMDA.
4 months now - zero spam, zero lost valid emails.
I didn't have to give up any existing (POP3) accounts, and gained as many as I want to create, because I now have my own email server.
This is easy and cures spam, period.
I'm on DSL, with dynamicly assigned IP, so I use a free DNS service no-ip.com.
This really is simple to do, all were RPM's and I mostly just took whatever default was offered.
I really am New To Nix, so if I could do this, then anyone can.
And it was free.
I am so happy - 40 - 50 spam emails a day, went to ZERO spam. And I still have and use my same email address! Plus some special occasion ones I create as needed (timed experation for usenet, etc.).
And the disclaimer - I have nothing to do with any program mentioned in this post, other then being a happy user of same.

Re:IPv4 good enough?Amen, I pay $20 a month to my ISP for a static IPv4 IP (I know, it's highway robbery). Then I have to play games with iptables and DNAT to access things from the outside.
Dude, you should tell your ISP to fsck off, and get a dynamic IP redirector. I use no-ip free service, and they offer win/mac/linux clients... have NEVER had availability or connection issues.
-
Re:A note on Brightmail
Like anti-virus solutions, anti-spam solutions need constant updating. Make sure you are running the latest verion 2.61, with a well trained Bayesian database. The Popcorn, Backhair & Weeds ruleset another poster mentioned, and the detoken rules do wonders for me at work, but I don't seem to need tham at home.

I've been fooling these guys for quite a time ....
In the past i had simply deleted all these 419 scams. But then, while accidently finding the site www.whatsthebloodypoint.com I got inspired by that idea, to waste the time of these suckers.
So i started registering a few "dynip"-domains to my home-run linux machine and started replying to those guys using a obiously silly name. Since the scammers always want to phone one up, i gave them one of these free voice2mail service numbers and belive me, i had about 2 or 3 voice mails in my letterbox. It is really nice to know, that these criminals had to spend money for these long distance calls.
Whats bad about folling these assholes is, that you definately can waste time of these criminals, usually you are able to send most of the mails to many of them and just exchange the names. If you are good, you manage to exchange up to 20 mails with them, provide them with fake Western Union numbers and make them go to the loal western union office and feel like idiots if they are told, that the number was fake. Also make them fax you all the "important" documents to you, always they will have to pay for a long distance call.
Unfortunately there are more of these scammers than people like me have time, in the end, i get more 419 mails than i can reply to and so the rest of my time i contact abuse departments and make them shut down the mailboxes of the scammers.
People, please set up fake accounts and reply to these bastards and tell them after a few mails how much you hate them and how they give their country (usually Nigeria, South Africa) a bad name!.
Contrary to usual spammers their reply addresses have to exist, so go and spam their boxes or waste their time!
If anyones interested, i have a few pictures the scammers sent to me and some voicemessages uploaded. Oh how i hate these bastards. Here you find an unsorted collection of pics and voice messages:

using a mail-reflector to avoid *inbound* block
So my ISP start blocking all *inbound* traffic on port 25 to avoid the exploit of poorly configured servers. I ran a mailserver for quite some time and without notice I was cut off early August 2002.
My first 'solution' was using Eric S. Raymond's fetchmail. My domain name registrar let me choose to define a MX host for my mail, or to have all mail forwarded to an existing pop account. So I changed it to the latter and let fetchmail empty that pop box on a 15 minute interval from my mailserver. Fetchmail examines the headers of every individual e-mail, rewrites the headers and submit it to localhost which was cut off in the first place.
This works quite nice, but has some side effects like BCC's which couldn't be resolved anymore and ended up in the 'main' account. Still, it works out fine, provided that you have an e-mail account you can use. I had one which came with my ISP.
So I stumbled upon no-ip.com. They provide a mail-reflector which reroutes e-mail to a port of my choosing. So I made them the primary MX host for my domain and let my mailserver listen on a high-port. Works like a charms for over a year no without any problems. I'm sure there are others who provide similar services.

SMTP Redirection Service
NO-IP.COM has a service that looks like it does what you're looking for: reroute messages traveling on port 25 to the desired port.
http://www.no-ip.com/services.php/mail/smtp -
This happened to me.
I've been working on a personal website for the last month and a half, and had this happen. Not to any degree of maliciousness, but it did screw with PHP.
My expirence with XSS was due to my lazy programming. I didn't filter user content before it was displayed. Someone posted guestbook content with malformed PHP commands. Luckly they didn't know PHP that well, and an error was returned.
As far as PHP goes, functions like str_replace(), and striptags() should be used to parse all user-inputed data before it is displayed. I'm sure other serverside scripting languages have similar functions. -

No-IP.com did it right
I use No-IP.com. Within a few hours of the worm spreading they had turned off bounce notifications of virus messages. I received a total of 10 SoBig worm notifications messages, and none of the actual worm.
I think it's up to the ISP administrators to stay up to date with what is going on and to stop these sort of things in their tracks. That is why I get my email through a third party: so I don't have to deal with the bull. They have a responsiblity to their customers. I think No-IP did a great job living up to that responsibility.
Frisk has been around for a long time, I used f-prot in DOS. But I think the letter he wrote is definitely a marketing ploy. They have recently updated their site to a more modern interface and it seems they are attempting to make some kind of mainstream market pull. I have the f-prot trial on my work windows xp box and honestly, it's pretty good. Fast and stable and less intrusive than Norton AV. So it might be good for it to work out for them.
