Snort as a recommendation is a rather good pun but, as a network sniffer (packet capture/protocol analyzer) Snort is not the answer.

Snort is an Intrusion Detection System(IDS) that monitors network traffic and performs an action when it sees a matching pattern. That action could be a log entry or it might be configured to save the packet to a file. Other actions are possible using external programs. Snort uses libpcap of TCPDump fame to monitor or capture the network traffic. Snort is useless for displaying or analyzing network traffic but, this is not a function that it was designed for.

Ethereal is a graphical protocol analyzer although it does include a command line version as well called Tethereal. Ethereal also relies on libpcap for actually capturing the network packets but, it goes much further than simply capturing network packets. Ethereal displays a break down of the packets themselves separating categorizing and displaying the various fields and data in a packet. It goes further by also decoding a long list of higher level protocols that may be included in the packet.

Ethereal is also capable of reading and decoding network traffic that has been captured and saved in other formats. Ethereal can read and save packet capture files in MS Network Monitor, NAI Sniffer Pro, and many other formats. Ethereal is increasingly recommended by companies such as Novell who actually has had their own protocol analyzer for years called Lanalyzer. Cisco support engineers are also increasingly recommending the use of Ethereal for capture and analysis of network traffic when troubleshooting potential problems with their equipment.

TCPDump has also been recommended by many people here on Slashdot.. TCPDump is a command line based protocol analyzer. It also relies on libpcap for actual packet capture but, it then displays a break down of the actual packets. Its display is not as attractive or as configurable as the graphical Ethereal and it is more limited in the number of protocols that it can interpret and disassemble but, it is still a very powerful and capable program. Further more, its output can be saved for further examination by ethereal.

Did you watch the Novell Brainshare videos, or read about what they shwed off? Some of the things from ZenWorks, Red Carpet, and iFolder integration were phenominal all of which are available TODAY. To say that KDE and GNOME are basically the same as 2 years ago is wrong and to compare them to WinFS and Avalon and Indigo is completely wrong. Avalon is more comparable to XFree and WinFS is more comparable to say Ext3 or Reiser4, well with a SQL database running on top of it. Some of these new features are not really necessary for most corporations or users, but a lot of the stuff shown at Brainshare was actually productivity improvement features. And may I remind you once again that they are available TODAY.

I think some of the Novell stuff will really help push Linux into the corporate desktop.

Bullshit. I've watched that keynote from Novell's website. (and you can too) All he said is that SuSE 9.1 will be getting a QT-based Openoffice. THAT IS ALL. nothing more. The journalist completely missinterpreted this, saying that SuSE is going to standardize on QT. It's all a missunderstanding.

You can almost talk about this as a linux "coalition of the willing", seeing as IBM is now invested in Novell which now owns both SuSE and Ximian...for those of us who are running Linux solely for speed and security and want very much to see integration of hardware-to-software-to-GUI (which is the strong point of Microsoft that allowed it to become what it is) within Linux, this is a boon.

Longtime CNI/CNE here [although I'm not part of the team that wrote the code itself, so understand that what follows is the standard Novell sermon that we'll all just have to accept as a matter of faith].

For years, bordering on decades, Novell has insisted that PASSWORDS NEVER TRAVEL THE WIRE!!! In the Novell-verse, only HASHES of passwords are allowed to travel the wire. When you say

That's one of the reasons Novell gave up on NDS/eDirectory synchronization with NetBT/CIFS, LanManager, and NT Domain Controllers - to make the thing seamless to the end user, they would have had to follow Microsoft's lead and send encrypted passwords over the wire, rather than encrypted hashes of passwords. It's certainly the reason that Native File Sharing in NetWare 6 is such a bitch as to be useless - the end user has to remember both a NetBT/CIFS/LanManager password AND an NDS/eDirectory password precisely because Novell is scared to death that if they were to integrate a NetBT/CDFS/LanManager infrastructure [where passwords travel the wire] into the NDS/eDirectory infrastructure [where only hashes of passwords travel the wire], then they'd lose all their Red Book/Blue Book/Green Eggs & Ham Book certifications. In fact, it's also the reason that, in many scenarios, when you upgrade a server across the wire [e.g. replace an old NetWare 3.x box on 80386 hardware with a newer NetWare box on newer hardware], the user accounts created on the new box have no passwords - to get the passwords from the old box to the new box, Novell would have send passwords, rather than hashes of passwords, across the wire, and, as we've seen, the former is forbidden.

As for the grandparent's assertion that Novell stores "clear text passwords in RAM" - that might have been true circa 1987 and NetWare 2.x, but I can't imagine it's been that way in the last ten or fifteen years. Like some other posters, I'd ask for some documentation on that one.

I had to laugh a little as i read this....not because it was funny, but because I was ironically reading this post at Novell in Provo on my G5 because my XP machine was having issues and my Suse machine was set up so nicely that i lent it to my team to be used at brainshare today. I am now thinking of using the G5 (usually just test with it for compatibility issues) as my main machine. (OS X by the way...if i didn't need to test with it.... it would be debian or yelllowdog)

As long as there are delusional fools in the US contributing their time and effort for free, helping both Novell and Red Hat to sell their hardware, they can continue outsourcing vital services in India and help local markets there. For an Indian developer a salary of $200 is enough to live by, for a US developer, according to what I've seen in open-source world, a $0 is just enough (must be living off untaxed corporate dividends, I assume).

The companies that never laid off a single American engineer and only use India for support will take a dive and hopefully disappear from the market entirely.

there's nothing inherently wrong with using proprietary communication protocols, especially when they're being used by a for-profit company.

That's where you're most completely wrong. Using a proprietary protocol is absolutely inherently bad. Especially if you're not in big business, but the millitary. I don't have time/space here to fully explain (but the links give clues), and others have written volumes.

Neither X_Bones nor Saeed al-Sahaf has given any explanation as to why DRM is impractical. In another thread it was pointed out that Saeed al-Sahaf's reaction to DRM was hardly more than an ingrained revulsion to a hated acroynym. (He immediately Godwinned)

I can think of one reason why DRM might be a negative (beyond the fact that it implies a proprietary protocol), and that is that it probably won't completely work. Users expecting protections that aren't really there may put themselves at risk. But maybe you can give some better reasons.

In case you didn't pick up on this, Groove is bloatware, and only 15% of its features are needed by a normal user.

The other 40% functionality can be accomplished by 20-40 more lines. But of course then one more challenge is faced: convincing the network admin to allow ssh traffic. (It's quite funny that the main reason people are installing Groove is that it subverts their firewalls)

First, I think I'd need an actual Microsoft Windows, which is non-free (and in fact 299 dollars). The .Net 7.x compiler system is also rather pricey, but I could squeak by with gcc prehaps.

But then for every other user, the necessary additional tools are sshd, crond, and python. I could convince an average Windows user to install maybe one of those, but not all of them.

I note something that didn't seem to get mentioned it in the article about indemnification. That is, Novell has dredged up an official AT&T interpretation of a particular paragraph-in-the-contract.

I think that this disputed paragraph is the foundation upon which SCO is basing 99% of its claims. What I most seriously wonder is, "OK, suppose the judge gives SCO full rights to Unix. But most of the Unix contracts out there are based on an AT&T contract, and AT&T has provided a specific interpretation of a critical paragraph. Can SCO change the interpretation of this particular paragraph, JUST because they now own Unix?"

What I think is that those who obtained those AT&T-type contracts will argue that they are operating under the AT&T interpretation, which they were contractually allowed to do when they signed those contracts!

I do not think that the judge will grant SCO the right to arbitrarily alter the interpretation of the disputed paragraph in those contracts without some sort of advance notice -- and no such notice was given (just lawsuits). The net result is that, for example, IBM may have to STOP moving AIX and Dynamix code into Linux, but that all previously-moved code will be "grandfathered".

For Linux, that net result means that SCO can be ignored, and no indemnification nor insurance need be paid to anyone.

SCO's evidence of origin and Function dictates form

What proof did SCO present for the origin of both fragments of source code?

What proof did SCO present to show the SCO code did not originally from old BSD,Linux or public domain publications?

Who put the SCO source into Linux? - Was put there by Old Novell/SCO/Caldera in the first place?

What proof did SCO provide to show that the person had access to SCO's Unix sources?

The latter question raises another issue. The similarity is just as likely to be due to both operating systems performing the same role. Form is often directed by the function it performs. Function and variable names are often dictated by the API and common terminology.

Both the current Linux and Unix kernel developers have attended the similar university courses and read the same publicly available documentation. The works of W. Richard Stevens are very influential as a reference toward modern Unix and Linux and have dictated the implentation of APIs and TCP/IP stacks in both.

SCO held another telephone conference today, but you had to be on time. I tried to call in later, when I was free, to hear the recording, but although the operator told me it had been recorded, it wasn't being made available. She suggested I contact SCO and ask to hear it. Meanwhile, someone who did listen posted on Slashdot as "mec" and he or she heard this question and answer :

"Q: Copyright office does not have an assignment on file [for the Unix copyrights from Novell]. 'Is it your understanding that the copyrights have not been registered yet?' A: 'Stephen is correct ... [if we need] we will change the assignment of copyright ...' [we can do that at any time]."

If this is true, that they failed to register, it puts another interesting twist on this story. (Novell put a twist of its own, by posting a press releaseon its site saying that while the Amendment that SCO sent them seemed to support their claim "that ownership of certain copyrights for UNIX did transfer to SCO in 1996", Novell doesn't seem to have the amendment in its own files, and patents for sure didn't transfer.)

It's true you can register a copyright any time, but you can't sue for infringement until you have registered and you can't get certain damages for infringement that occured prior to registration: "Before an infringement suit may be filed in court, registration is necessary for works of U. S. origin." Section 411 says it precisely like this:

" 411. Registration and infringement actions10 (a) Except for an action brought for a violation of the rights of the author under section 106A(a), and subject to the provisions of subsection (b), no action for infringement of the copyright in any United States work shall be instituted until registration of the copyright claim has been made in accordance with this title...."

You are limited as to remedies without registration, as Section 412 sets forth:

" 412. Registration as prerequisite to certain remedies for infringement11

Get some Novell certs. They're making a rebound. Heck, the new Certified Linux Engineer cert they just created requires a totally hands-on test. Either that, or just go for your MCSE and get made fun of. I haven't heard of any CNE jokes, but I do know plenty of MSCE jokes.

I can't find the retraction and Novell still has the press release on it's website. While I can find the May 28, 2003 release by searching at google with that date, when I search for the next day (May 29, 2003) I only get one release that has nothing to do with SCO. Like IBM said to SCO, "prove it".

In three months, the judge will set the end for discovery. Novell will say, They didn't give us what we wanted. The judge will rule compelling SCO to give Novell what they want or SCO will be held in contempt. At the end of this time period, SCO will say we need Novell to respond to our requests before we can respond to their requests.

Sound familiar?

I'm surprised that Novell didn't do something sooner. According to the purchase agreement, SCO had to provide Novell with all of the licensing information for royalties to be paid, which SCO failed to do since early 2003(late 2002?). So, Novell started an audit, which, from what I saw in the letters, SCO still didn't respond. At least Novell won't have to worry about any SCO sales since the time period covered by the audit.
