Confused moderator? Plus new mirror linkSome moderator must be confused -- I replied to a message that mentioned that the site is slashdotted with a message that provided a mirror link and a long-term solution to avoid slashdotting of small sites in the future and that is somehow off-topic?
Note that the site has changed their content due to the increased traffic, so the mirror link is now different. That mirror is now working fine.

Editors: Please supply a mirror link!It would be good if the Slashdot editor posting a story would insert a (mirror) link in the original article for any site that might get slashdotted. The example link I just used makes use of the Coral NYU Distribution Network, which will mirror any site as long as you add ".nyud.net:8090" onto the end of the hostname (of course, the
/. editor would also need to follow the link to get the site into the cache). If the editors only want to add a mirror link for sites that actually need it, I'd suggest having each editor prepare the mirror link in advance, visit the Coral-mirrored version of the site (to get it into the cache), and then update the article with the mirror link if the site bogs down. (Unfortunately, the Powers That Be may be against this idea since they'd like to sell
/. subscriptions, and having a site get slashdotted probably helps to sell more of them.)As it stands currently, the Coral caching system can't access the slashdotted site any more than we can, but if everyone will try to access the site using the mirror instead of the main article's link, the slashdotted site should become available more quickly than if everyone continues to pound on the site directly.

KNOPPIX 3.7 OUT (kind of)
Check out official forums for confirmation. ISO available here, why not use the Coral Cache and save a
/.ing? It has nifty new firewalling in addition to all the usual updates. This version was released from the German PC-Welt magazine and is in German only, but using lang=whatever at boot time will cure that. It will obviously differ from the 'official' 3.7 CD which should come out soon, but not by much - so worth a CD-RW for the curious I suppose. md5sums are spewed around the net, no point me quoting one as I am not to be trusted (TM). testcd is a useful check. -

Re:Auto-Coralize links!!!Perhaps a re-read of this thread is in order.
The "Coralized" link which you posted, http://www.dvdanswers.com.nyud.net:8090/index.php
? r=0&s=8&c=28, lead to a page which tried to load all of its images from the slashdotted site dvdanswers.com and failed miserably. As a result, all that that link provided for me was a page with descriptive text referring to images that never loaded. When I pointed this out, you replied that that was precisely the point of Coral and that everybody should use it because of that. Because, apparently, broken images and incomplete caches of popular pages are a good thing.
This must be some new definition of "works perfectly for sites that are either down, overloaded or inacessible" that I was not previously aware of.

I tried a Coral cache link, but even that times out. But if enough people keep clicking it I'm sure the Coral servers will get through at least once... Worth a try, isn't it?

oh and now that I said KDE... check this -
Auto-Coralize links!!!
I've been thinking.. and this is the 5th instance of this.. why can't Slashdot auto-Coralize the links that they use in the articles?
If $ARTICLE_SUMMARY has a URL in it, split the domain off, append
.nyud.net:8090 to it, and then post it publically. Thats exactly what the NYU Distribution Network was designed for.In this case, this would be:

A New Desktop Orientation Proposal for KDE Folks!
Hey slashdot folks!
I want to write and present to the kde developers an official proposal for a new default desktop orientation in kde 3.4.
To see a draft of the proposal (with some humourously text for fun), see: http://nsk.wikinerds.org.nyud.net:8090/img/ (coral cache, original at http://nsk.wikinerds.org/img )
If you like what you read please communicate with me to agree on a final version to be proposed for kde 3.4!

I think the site's moderator will sign his missives as "Prosco P. Coltraine" and post stories such as the following:

I can almost hear them laughing now...

[OT] Knoppix 3.7 out
Knoppix 3.7 is out (kind of), a copy was distributed with the German PC-Welt magazine. It's in German but you can use lang=whatever as a boot option as normal. Has nifty new firewalling, and a 2.6.7 kernel. http://www2.hs-harz.de/~u17462/knoppix/knoppix_v3
7 .iso. Check out the official forums etc for confirmation of md5s etc (and remember to use testcd). Use Coral cache to avoid before that link to avoid /.ing -

Re:Hard Work
Some people seem to think that this is a relatively new "speech impediment".
I don't know either way about this, but here's a video I mirrored before the site hosting it went belly up. It claims to show the difference between Bush's speaking patterns from 10 years ago to today. I'm sure they picked the best examples of each side they could find, but it's still interesting.

Libertarian's point of viewIt's true because the movie skillfully picked on both the left and the right. Trey Parker is a Libertarian and made a tv commercial for a former Libertarian candidate for CA Governor's Office Steve Kubby years ago. AFAIK it's the only commercial ever made with the SP characters endorsing something else.

An appeal to /. editors and submittersThe request for caching content on foreign websites has been covered before so I won't ask why
/. doesn't cache sites locally. But it wouldn't have taken much effort by either the editors or submitter to append .nyud.net:8090 to www.cherryos.comhttp://www.cherryos.com.nyud.net:8090/
Use Coral CDN! It works and it's available, no excuses except laziness.

The US sulfur dioxide emissions seemed pretty low, even in the acid-rain-prone Northeast. Some of the ocean blooms of SO2 seemed odd, tho. -
