Except their GMO plants ARE capable of cross pollination.

I'm a little lazy right now but here is an article/paper about managing cross pollination between GMO and non-GMO plants. I can only assume that if management of cross pollination is required then it must be possible.

What normally would end up happening with cross pollination is that only some of the genes are in the new generation so the terminator gene is not in the new plant. I you look up some of monsanto's actions in canada and mexico against farmers whose fields have been contaminated by GMO crops I think you migh come away with a different view on things.

Last but not least, Monsanto has a patent(copyright?) on all the gene sequences that they insert into their GMO. This means that if your crops get cross contaminated you owe them money. And trust me they'll come to collect.

I still want to know where this vast amount of agro waste is... U.S. farmers, in general, make use of everything they possibly can, to reduce their costs. What some classify as "waste" is reincorporated into the soil to replace nutrients that would otherwise require use of chemical fertilizers, which cause money. Farms don't have manure spreaders just because the farmers don't want a large trash bill! There have been farmers working with municipalities for decades to recycle our post-sewage-treatment crap as fertilizer, when the goverment will allow it.

That's not to say there isn't bio waste that could be recycled. Consumer food waste, for example, after you separate out the inorganics that don't fit municipal recycling rules. But that isn't free - someone (i.e., consumers) is going to have to pay the additional cost to do the separation, or make sure that those costs are less than what landfills charge to accept the waste. The aforementioned output of sewage plants, when blocked by government regulation from being incorporated into the soil, is another source.

The fact is, we don't have enough farm land under tillage in the world to supply both our food and energy needs. And I doubt environmentalists would enthusiastically support any efforts to correct that. This article describes an interesting side note in energy history, and it does point a way towards a way to truly incorporate "solar energy" into our current environment that does not require repaving our world with solar cells.

But (and this is where my hotbutton is triggered) the source of the "waste" used isn't going to be farms as we think of them today. Unless, of course, we find (or design!) a fast-growing plant that doesn't leach away the nutrients needed for food plants in the process, preferably one that can be used to reclaim land by breaking up "bad" soils, and working like legumes to reduce land erosion and add nitrogen to the soil for later food crops, yet provide plenty of biomass for production of fuel. Maybe something socially acceptable enough to turn any vacant city lot into a "fuel farm", rather than using grass. Oh, and it can't kill off any exotic bugs or slugs in the process!

Gee, I wonder if the future biomass fuel companies will make it worth my time and money to take my 3+ acres of grass clippings for fuel production, rather than me just composting them?

OSU lost in court the last time they tried to fight this.

Well, other than the supposed health fears, most of the controversy I hear about over GM crops is the concern of cross breeding with non-GM crops or weeds. In the case of the weeds article, the that pesticide-resistant genes manage to make it into weeds, which farmers obviously do not want resistant to weed killers.

For another argument, just do a quick search on "sterile genetically-modified" to find a whole bunch of stuff. The main concern I've read about on this is that pollen from sterile GM crops will infect fertile non-GM crops and prevent them from propogating (I don't have a link, but I remember an issue about this dealing with orange trees a couple of years back - farmers suing other nearby farmers because of lost crop fertility, or something like that).

After seeing that picture of TerraMax, I surely hope they'll have fighters with air-to-ground capability standing by during the race. Just in case something goes seriously wrong.

One of the other competitors is from my university. Looking at the relative sizes, I hope the hummer in the article doesn't get in TerraMax's way.

Then I went to college, and lived in the dorms. It was an honors dorm, and I wish i would have socialized MORE, but I still did an incredible job.

What happened the next summer for me? I couldn't get out of my basement soon enough! I was SO bored and lonely... i wanted to run next door and talk to the kids. I missed college life, and couldn't wait to get back to school.

So dorm life's what did it for me. Now in my 4th year of school, I have such an incredible group of friends that I can't fit everyone into my cell phone. And i'm not in a lame ass frat either.

However, looking back even further, I was MUCH more anti-social in 6th/7th grade. Was too smart for my own good sometimes. How did i start meeting those high school friends? Video games and Magic Cards! It did work for me -- and we did quickly outgrow it and start hanging out with girls around 9th grade.

So to make a long story short, you can't do this in a semester. But foster some of the skills so that this kid doesn't get lost. It definitely took time for me, but now I could honestly care less about my engineering classes and just want to go partying with my friends (bertopics.afraid.org if you want to see how out of control we get)... and I couldn't be happier.

PS: one last thing - have him do a nerd-friendly sport. Mine was swimming, and I now play water polo at school. Martial arts are also recommended, I was in the ju-jitsu club for quite a while too. Don't let that stuff get to his head though.

As many here have said, it's possible that you're in the wrong degree program. At a four year university, if the degree says "Computer" or "Information Systems / Science" in it, you're going to have to do quite a bit of programming.

I'm currently an Information Systems major at Ohio State and feel it's a good fit for me. (The major was formerly called Management Information Systems). IS at OSU is about (outside the General Ed requirements) half business and half tech. The tech is about two thirds programming and one third systems analysis.

I don't enjoy coding, and I don't think I'm that great at it (relative to others who post here). However, I'm good enough and tenacious enough to pull off B's with some A's in the programming courses.

As for what I'll be doing full-time after school, I will be doing tech support and project management for Campus Crusade for Christ's largest state-side region. I think my degree will have prepared me for that because I will be able to speak the language of business / operations as well as the language of the "dedicated" programmers and engineers. My goal coming in to MIS was to be like PERL: jack of all trades, master of very few.

I started off as an engineering major (because of my standardized test scores), but the CAD classes kicked my ass hard enough that I decided not to pursue engineering. It sounds like perhaps you're having the same problem with coding as I did with CAD.

There is a reason some courses are called "weed-out classes."

I recommend you find a major that you enjoy AND are good at. It may or may not be tech-related. If you want some specific tech skills thrown in, consider hitting a community college or similar for certificates / experience in the areas of IT that interest you. A non-tech degree / skills with some tech certificates thrown in can actually be pretty attractive to a lot of employers.

I was offered and accepted a non-tech position with U.S. Bank in 2001 for that same reason.

In 1990 I was finally able to fulfill that longing in the rec room of the Tiger's Claw, where there was, you guessed it, a standup video arcade simulation. Before I ever flew a mission I got scores in the millions fighting wave after wave of Dralthi. From then until the fireworks at the end, I was totally absorbed in the world that was Wing Commander. For the next several years, every time an expansion came out I was there. Malcom McDowell, Mark Hammell, John Rheys-Daves and even Ginger Lynn Allen!

In 1996 Chris Roberts, the man behind the Eing Commander Universe left for two projects. One is Digital Anvil the other was an extension of the movie sequences.

When Wing Commander hit the big screen in 1999 Chris finally made it to the big screen himself as the pilot of the salvage ship that rescues 1st Lt Blair.

Chris went on to Freelancer and other games, and we've moved on as well. But Chris and the whole team at Origin will always be remembered as the ones who first brought true 3D space combat to a computer near us!

Since I'm in the CIS department at my school, I get all that stuff for free. However, I don't take advantage of it (though I might take advantage of Windows Server 2003).

Also, all the CIS computers are thin clients that connect to one of 10 or so Solaris servers. Needless to say, we don't teach C#, VC++ or VB.

I just hope the solution was more inventive than doing the old theatrical movie stunt about using relative shifting of color information and celluloid glasses - which gives you depth information at the expense of color information. Spy Kids 3D just did this using a blue or green image for the left eye and a red image for the right.. That one's been around since the 40's. In both movie and book. Cute trick but it gives me headaches to see it for any length of time.

Jearl Walker explains the Leidenfrost Effect. It even has a nice picture of him after dipping his hand in the lead.

This is also included with the physics textbook which he authored with Halliday and Resnick (so others from OSU and maybe other uni's will recognize it.

My process? I take notes on plain white paper, front and back. No lines. I use every little inch of the paper, and in the top-right corner i number what page i'm on. I then have nearly-indestructible plastic blue folders that have lasted me 3 years so far, and keep each subject with that (some classes and labs come with binders, but i always bring the blue folders anyway).

Then when it's time for exams, I put my notes in order and staple them. Everyone hates my notes because they're so damned hard to read, but for me, I love it, and can find anything within a minute.

The point is that you have to have your own process, and stick to the winning formula. If you're unorganized or don't have a system in place, it'll catch up to you eventually.

As a bit of background, I'm a junior (senior ranking) at a rather large national championship school studying Electrical and Computer Engineering, currently doing a co-op at an enormous and extremely successful corporation. Not to brag, i'm just saying that this works: I party at least 5 times a week, play water polo, lift weights 3 times a week, have more friends than I can fit in my cell phone, and run a 3.78 GPA. How? Because I have a system. I don't fool around online unless my work is done. I do my work early so that it's not rushed, it's done well (and not while drunk or on a caffeine high), and then I go drink afterwards.

It's all in your process. Get one down and you'll find more free time to do fun stuff than you ever imagined. A little hard work now pays off in fun or laziness later.

One point to highlight is that if OSU sysadmins want to use the Buckeye Bundle software, we must also purchase an OEM Microsoft OS license - it isn't sufficient to purchase just the Buckeye Bundle. Of course many in the university believe this means we're paying for the OS license twice.

All of you who think this is a "great deal"... well, due to the OEM licensing requirements, unless you really need lots of Visual Studio .NET licenses, it doesn't amount to all that much less expense.

There are LOTS of studies that show that we are destroying our environment one piece at a time.

Correction- there are lots of studies that theorize that we may be destroying our environment. There are also lots of studies that disagree with those theories. In fact, the NOAA link that you posted says that all of the climate change that has been observed could just be caused by variations in the sun's intensity or the earth's orbit. Some people theorize that the build-up of "greenhouse gases" like CO2 is not causing a climate change, but rather a symptom of it (like this article for example).

Either way, none of those links that you gave make the jump that you made that our entire eco system is going to irreversibly collapse.

Your claims that the earth is overpopulated are also crap. Right now, you could fit everybody on the earth into Texas with about the same population density as Paris, France (look here). And the global population growth rate has been decreasing for the past 30 years.

Nobody is calling for the blatant misuse of our environment, but I think the earth is a lot more robust that you give it credit for, and I think that humans are not as influential to the environment as you seem to think.

This is not to say that I don't think global warming is real. I've seen enough other proof to believe that it's real. It's just that this specific data on Kilmanjaro (at least, what I've seen so far) doesn't seem to say anything more than that the Killmanjaro glaciers are shrinking. I don't have enough data to tell if this shrinkage pattern is a good bad or neutral indicator.

But then again, if my ECE dept did this, I guess I'd just suck it up and take the damned class..

But I'd speak up! That's what students need to do. At a school where students make their voices known, things get done more than in any other institution.

In reading up about this I found that some of the same people who don't like pesticides also don't like Bt and pheromones. You wonder how they're going to like a deforested Pacific Northwest if those moths get loose up there.

Perhaps these new aminos hold clues to diseases.

So far, as I understand it, this 22nd known amino acid has only been found in methanogens although the article states that:

Krzycki believes it is likely to be found in other situations - in other organisms

Those other organisms have yet to be identified and almost certainly don't include humans. That suggests that this discovery won't have much bearing on diseases that affect humans, unless it's an important factor in the make-up of one of our parasites.

The very fact that this amino acid was overlooked for so long suggests that it's direct importance to our lives is negligible; it's relevance is more about filling the final gaps in an overall picture.

In the article, Krzycki suggests that it also alters the way we should approach genetics:

"This shows us that the genetic code, and therefore, evolution is much more plastic than people might have thought."

"I think this work will cause researchers to start looking at genetic sequences that they might have thought at first were simply aberrations," he said. "Instead, they might signal discoveries like ours."

At our place (in Columbus, Ohio) we've ordered DSL from Ameritech. It's supposed to be turned on today (maybe). Our options are: DSL (Ameritech, maybe others), Cable (TWC:RR, Earthlink?), and 28.8Kbps dialup. Currently, we have dialup. It's slow. We would get cable except that the cable companies don't like people sharing the connection across a local network, and we'd like to have an internet connection across the entire network. Buying multiple IPs for a non-cable TV-subscriber is expensive ($15US/ip/month).

So, in our case, there is no shortage of options (in fact, we have more methods of connecting than most, though there aren't many providers) but the problem is that the cable companies don't like routers. Now, if it was my decision, I'd probably say "to hell with them! they've got my money for the one IP I'm using!". But it's not.

Anyway, what's holding us back from taking advantage of the best offer we have available is the cost of staying within the bounds of the RR agreement.

So that's why TWC will not be getting any of our money! So there TWC! *PBTHHHHHT*

Of course - and that's why the Seti League (http://www.setileague.org/) advocate lots of smaller dishes. Their argument is that while an Arecibo size dish can look further, this comes at the cost of seeing a smaller area of the sky. The fact that UN says there is Global Warming does not mean there is. The UN is a very socialist/anti-capitalist organization. The UN is so far off in la-la land that it voted the USA off the human rights commission and replaced it with Sudan! Do you think that Sudan pays more attention to the civil rights of its citizens more than the US? I think you better open your eyes to the organization that thinks slavery in Sudan is a much better state of human rights than freedom in the US of A. Their credibility is suspect at best.

The only folks I ever hear talking about Global Warming are rock stars and actors -- they might play a scientist on TV but they ain't one in real life. Also what kind of scientist are they? Just because people calls themselves "scientists" doesn't mean they know anything about Future Weather Prediction. The most telling point about these "scientists" is that they are relating to me that earth is going to boil away in 50 years, but, for some reason, can't get next week's weather prediction right.

As for business, it would absolutely stupid for a business to desire the destruction of the world's ecosystems. If the ecosystem is destroyed, people will die and there will not be anyone to buy products or services. That ain't too good for profit margin if you ask me. If you want to talk about environmental disasters, look at the former Eastern Block where communism raped the environment. It wasn't big business that did that.

By the way, what you believe to be Global Warming will end naturally in 20 years.

Perhaps I'm not looking far enough into the future with this idea, but, what if local educational institutions (colleges, universities) sold part of their bandwidth to the surrounding public?

I think it sounds good at first, but, then again, maybe commercializing our universities would be a bad thing. For instance, Local State University has tons of unused bandwidth. So, they decide to sell part of it to the locals. However, nearby Smith University also has some extra bandwidth and decides to make a couple bucks with it. So, LSU and SU fight it out and eventually one has the monopoly and we'd be right back where we started.

However, from my experience, the people that manage the internet access at college seem pretty sane(i.e. "Don't browse porn at 3pm. At 4am when you're all alone in the lab, that's fine."). Though, maybe other people have had worse experiences. (I do remember the story where poorer schools were getting free internet access with banner ads and filters or something like that. Lots of people told stories about how bad their internet access was in college. I was pretty perplexed. To this day, I suppose I don't see how lucky I really am.)

Hey, I remember a similar thing. This girl at school asked me what I wanted to do later in life. I wasn't sure, but I knew it would involve computers (this was around '98-'99). She said something like what people said to you. "Oh, wow, that's a good business to be in. You can make a lot of money." And yes, you can. Computer programmers can get paid a lot of money. Just like, say, car mechanics or engineers. These people make a lot of money, not just because people like to throw money at them, but because they do a job that people want and, these days, need.

I had thought about this response before, so I was a little prepared for it. I replied with something like "Well, yeah, but it's a very volatile market. What if people just decide that they do not need computers any more? They are not a necessity. It might be better to be in, say, the food industry. People will not up and decide that they do not need food."

All in all, I'm aiming to go into a tech-related field (nearing the end of my second year in a university pre-ECE program) because I think it will be fun. Sure I might stand to make a sizeable amount of money, that certainly has kept my attention. But even when I was in 5th grade, I had this feeling that I wanted to do something with electronics*.

In order to keep this post ontopic I'd like to say that I agree with the general point of the story (not that I read it, I can just get the gist of it from the post's title :) ). I've learned a lot by 'playing' with computers. I've wasted a lot of time with them and I think I now have a valuable skill. Hopefully someone else will think so, too, heehee :).

*A little anecdote. On a 'career day'-like thing in 5th grade, other people were dressing up as teachers and doctors and sports players ("I want to be a pro-basketball player!"). I just wore some comfortable clothes ('grubbies', you might say). When we were announcing what we were supposed to be dressed as, I said that I didn't know what I wanted to be but I knew it would deal with electronics. I still find it funny to consider that I knew that and now am aiming to enter a College of Electrical Engineering. Not that it matters to you at all...

I went to a big football school, The Ohio State University. For every football student that couldn't read, I can show you 10 non football students who couldn't read. The only real difference is that you hear the football players talk on TV. People that play football for a university are helping, just as the students are. Quite a few people hear about OSU because our sports teams are consistently good. Our last two presidents have worked hard to increase our educational standards as well. Football is just good marketing for us.

It's pretty sad that people on slashdot are so exclusive. Sure, your average football player may not have the same IQ as some of the people here. They may not know anything about our beloved computers. Just remember, you probably don't know a whole lot about their interests. They can probably call you stupid because you don't know much about football.

There are uneducated people everywhere you go. Try to have some tolerance and understanding. At least the football players have some motivation and drive to try to do something!

My university (Ohio State) has banned Napster traffic, but (and I know this from talking to the as-of-yesterday former CIO, and new Vice Chancellor of - I think - UCLA) it was due entirely to bandwidth concerns.

Looking at a single data packet, it is impossible to determine if it is copyrighted or not. Any university that bans Napster on copyright concerns has no leg to stand on.

Napster eats an incredible amount of bandwidth, mostly because people don't know the most efficient way of using it. You don't leave it up 24-7, for example.

As an aside, OU ran a recent experiment where they temporarily expanded their pipe by a factor of 4, and it took 12 minutes for traffic to expand and fill the new pipe. 12 minutes. It was nearly ALL Napster traffic.

Students will take as much bandwidth as is available. It's just too expensive for universities to attempt to keep up. And simply banning services is - at best - a temporary fix.

People need to learn how to responsibly use network resources, for the betterment of ALL.

I doubted it too (when I got home my stepson swore it was a UFO, heh), but this morning on the way in all the radio stations were talking about it, mentioning it was verified from Wright Patterson Airforce base in Dayton, OH. which is just west of Columbus.
Just now I checked the website for the local newspaper and found an article here (note the logic of columbus residents calling the police) that has quotes from some OSU Astronomers verifying what you said - that it was junk and not part of the Leonids.
Damn! It certainly was brilliant looking. I've got my hopes up for tonite now!!

• Africa is technologically backward, and doesn't deserve the technology. We should put it somewhere more progressive, where it will be appreciated, and contribute to progress. But the more developed countries have plenty of bandwidth, and will get more as time passes. The details of financing weren't clear, but there wasn't any clear evidence that this was being done at the expense of progress in the developed countries. Even if it is, on a global scale, this really isn't that much money.
• African countries have corrupt governments, which will skim the money, and the network might never even go on-line. Yes, that's a realistic danger. That risk is assumed by whoever is financing the network, and hopefully they've insured themselves against that risk.
• The problems of hunger and poverty are much more important than giving Africans the opportunity to web-surf. The money should go to organizations like CARE, UNICEF, or the Red Cross. These organizations have a perfectly appropriate short-term role. But Africa can't depend on them forever. In order to thrive, Africa needs a self-sustaining economy. which will depend on the flow of information so that buyers and sellers can find each other (advertising). The free flow of information can also help to expose abuses of human rights. In 1989, the Chinese students' movement depended heavily on fax machines to pass information around.

One thing that concerns me a little is this. On the map in the article, I notice that a lot of the network taps are in one region, around Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Gabon. Here is a map of Africa. These are already some of the wealthier, freer countries. It would be nice if there were more taps in places like Somalia and Ethiopia. Still, it's a lot better than nothing.
