Re:First post!
it's a web site and you can put small messages on it that other people can read. That's all it is and ever was.
I share your sentiment, but realize, HTTP is a method of transferring files. That's all it is and ever was.
HTML is a method of marking up content. That's all it is and ever was.
Instant Messaging is just email, but faster. That's all it is and ever was.
...until you realize that it's not the technology behind it, but how people use it, that make it what it is. When Twitter is used as a blog site, it's exactly as useless as you suggest. When it's used as a conversation, that's somewhat different. So no, I don't use it, but I think I'm starting to get what it's about.

See, that's exactly what bothered me about the Wii. Everyone was so excited about a game controller where you get to mimic real movement... that is until everyone figured out how you could really play...

At least they are doing DLC the right way...
Having Day 1 DLC and having in game characters doing sales pitches to you about it are NOT the right way to do DLC.
Here's PA's take on it. -
Re:And another reason why you don't buy EA...
Heh... He had it right to begin with. EA only wants your money and to screw you over to get it. Doesn't matter if it's multiplayer or not. While I can't gripe TOO hard (I've got Burnout Paradise as a gift and play it...) at least they don't do this crap too much with the non-sports titles- yet.

Penny Arcade did their thing about it.
It kind of sucks for that guy, but basically if you don't like laws, you'll usually be better off trying to change them than run away. There's generally nothing unethical about helping the police find someone who's accused of committing a crime. -
Re:Now for business use
Any time someone says something critical of MS on here, no matter how true, they get moderated "Troll".
Yawn. Prove it. This site is extremely well known for being fiercely anti-MS to the point of being trollish. Or maybe *YOU* are the Linux zealot making you blind to the anti-ms bias.
There's TONS of shills on Slashdot; hell, MS probably pays people to shill on here.
That tin foil hat is on too tight. MS has thousands of paid print and other media journalists licking their feet and can influence world media in 2 seconds, and you think they're going to moderate comments on a website? Haha... You kids are so cute...

Re:Snapstream?
That is one of the things I like about Windows 7 MCE-Internet TV is as easy to browse through as my local cable channels, so between Internet TV and basic cable I have more entertainment than I could possibly ever watch.
As for BT, unlike a certain other evil OS which shall be forever damned (rhymes with fist ya) networking in Windows 7 is actually solid and doesn't crap itself when you listen to an MP3. Of course after being exposed to the previous version my view might be just a wee bit tainted, seeing is how I can actually do things like multitask without the OS slowing to a crawl.

Re:Compare to Vista
Well I can add my personal little anecdote from my little shop, I've done 8 Windows 7 upgrades this past week....5 were from XP, and 3 were from Vista. I think the Windows 7 HP family pack is gonna help spread windows 7 and get rid of a lot of XP installs. My own family just picked up the Win 7 HP pack after seeing how nice HP x64 ran on mine, and they couldn't be happier.
For the first time my dad actually uses his computer without cursing it. Getting rid of all the info pop ups and doing more of the behind the scenes "automagically" really helps with those like my dad who just gets irritated at all the pop ups. I'm just glad I talked him into avoiding Vista and waiting for Win 7, as all those damn UAC pop ups would have had him pulling an Elvis with his PC. With Windows 7 once I set everything up for him (which I was amazed took so little effort with the new OS) it really hasn't needed to be maintained. It has been pretty much plug and play.
I gotta give MSFT credit on this one, Vista sucked but Win 7 is actually quite nice. Of course I have to admit the first time I fired up Win 7 I had this reaction.

Re:Ruby Javascript
Faggot, I've had the misfortune of using both JavaScript and Ruby (for web development and scripting) more than you likely ever have, and ever will.
Or perhaps you're just some internet blowhard who likes to play to the peanut gallery? As you demonstrate very little in the way of knowledge in your posts, we'll never know. Your silly pronouncements of superiority in spite of very little knowledge of your interlocutor certainly make this a distinct possibility.
Have you looked at the syntax of Perl and Ruby? The vast similarities should be pretty clear to everyone but the stupidest of mental retards...then fuck off. You'll need to use both Ruby and Perl to experience Ruby's weak semantics compared to Perl.
You claimed that Ruby kept most of the syntax of Perl, but not the 'semantics' whatever that means in this context. Care to explain what you think it means, because you haven't so far?
I've used both, and there are similarities, but there are also many significant differences. The object system in Ruby is far less a tacked on afterthought, you don't have to declare variables with a prefix so there is less line noise, everything is an object, nicer blocks, etc. There is also quite a tradition of choosing the way which seems least surprising and sticking to it, as opposed to 'There is more than one way to do it' in Perl - that means radically different library classes.
The syntax of Ruby encourages legibility but keeps most of the shortcuts (in regexp for example) of Perl, while avoiding the horrific write-once possibilities of Perl which you seem to be so proud of (i.e. stuff can be done in fraction of a line of code); just because it can be done in half a line doesn't mean it should.
There is a spectrum from code which is far too verbose to code which is far too succinct (i.e. unintelligible even to the creator after a certain period), and I'd say Perl can be pushed too far to the succinct side, but that's personal preference really. It's quite possible to write good Perl code, but that doesn't make it the be all and end all of scripting languages, indeed several other languages are now more suitable for scripting if you prefer an object-oriented approach.
While I must agree with the sentiment that people who cheerlead for a certain language as radically different from all others need an education in the history and diversity of computer languages, to claim that Ruby is a bad copy of Perl without qualifying the statement betrays your lack of knowledge of the language, nothing more.

Re:Where is second life big?
I disagree that the web will evolve into some sort of 3D Virtual World. I do agree that 3D Virtual Worlds will continue to be prevalent and offer new and fresh experiences, such as for entertainment, education, experimentation, or even as a method for permanently disabled people to enjoy a fully realized existence (i.e. the matrix). However, that is *all* that they will be, for one single reason-convenience. The web is convenient. Real life is Not. Virtual worlds, as they move towards more and more realistic scenarios, by their very nature replace the convenience of (semi) immediate response engendered by traditional web browsers with the non-convenience of the real world, where you have to *go* somewhere to *get* something. I'm reminded of a post by the penny arcade guys where they reviewed the playstation home service (see http://www.penny-arcade.com/2008/12/12/). Hilarity aside, resources are limited in the real world, because things take up space. Therefore there cannot be an unlimited amount of them in a single location. Therefore by definition any "3D Virtual World" which provides as much correlation to the real world as something as simple as World of Warcraft *cannot* have the convenience provided by the current incarnation of the web browser. This is not to say that virtual reality will not happen, or that when it happens it will not be big. For all I know we might all decide to plug ourselves in matrix-style. Certainly the first company to figure out the sex angle at a more than pathetic level will be rich beyond their wildest dreams. However, what I am saying is that virtual worlds will continue being what they are-a tool for some purpose, be it entertainment or whatever-while what we consider the "web" will continue to exist in some "pure" (though evolved) form because of it's ability to offer the immediacy of information transfer, which is, ultimately, the thing we most value about it.

Baby vs. Rhino
And you picked a bad example. Dyslexics tend to be better with computers than the rest of the population. If you're practically illegible when using a pen like I am, you tend to develop fast typing (spellcheckers are pretty cool too).
And dyslexia doesn't stop one's family asking for tech support. Got all but one of them on Linux now though, which helps. -

It will be implemented badly. They've already stated it will only do gross motions and have limited resolution. It's the 2d camera version of the Sega Activator.
While a lot of people like flailing about, I rather prefer to be a tool and play from the couch.
Finger/hand tracking would be awesome. Limb tracking, not so much.

Re:Black Isle
Also an interesting link is the comic they made about it.
Even so, DLC doesn't mean the original game lacks content. From what I understand, the game has tons and tons of it. That they try to pimp some additional DLC sucks, but doesn't have to hurt the rest of the game. You could punish them for trying to sell DLC this way, but you might also end up punishing the makers of a really good game.
Personally I'm very wary of all those expansions, DLC and other additions for games, and especially expansions that are basically a completely new story. Why try to sell that as an add-on? Why not sell it as a stand-alone game? Don't invent a new engine for each new game, but re-use the same engine as long as its good enough, and publish more games at a lower price. That sounds like a much more effective business model, if you ask me.

DLC made scary
I was going to say exactly what you've said, basically. Firstly I'm definitely going to buy the game (for the Xbox 360). And I may buy the DLC if it's worth it. But I won't buy the DLC straight away and I'll consider not buying it at all. The excuse is that the DLC couldn't have been put into the game during time constraints - I say, fair enough, but if you have expansions coming out on the same day of release you are Doing It Wrong. If you deliberately end up with DLC that's ready for release day, you look like a cynical nickel-and-diming businessman - don't do that. If you accidentally end up with DLC that can be ready for release day, consider expanding the scope of the DLC, that way it'll be better value for gamers (though you could even charge more and profit) and it doesn't look really really cheeky. There's nothing that forces them to release DLC at the same time as the retail box.
Whilst I'm sure, based on BioWare's previous record, that it'll be an excellent game and excellent DLC I really want publishers and developers discouraged from making the mental link "DLC = printing money". The equation should be "Good DLC, with reasonable restrictions and decent value for money = happy customers and more profit". If they continue the nickel-and-diming trend, I'll move to playing games I can afford. Which probably means instead of buying the DLC for a single retail game, I can buy three second hand games which will provide me with a more varied and enjoyable experience. Yes, that's right EA, you're encouraging the second hand market - well done.
