Re:Driver Model
Thanks for showing everyone that you are nothing but a religious nutter, as you simply cannot do anything but throw insults because the facts are against you because if your OS can't even update itself? Then its not an OS, its a joke. Oh and allow me to LMFAO at how you try to cop an elitist attitude when I created iron clad proof that your OS can't even perform the most basic of functions, you might as well say "It sucks nuts but that is good...because....Linux party!"
/waves little penguin flag impotently while everyone laughs at you/ ROFL!Get ready for some FACTS Sparky....FACT your OS driver model DOES NOT WORK, as even drivers controlled by the devs? Shit all over themselves, in fact the entire "let the devs handle it" argument has been pointed out repeatedly to be a classic mythical man month scenario but the devs are too vain and guys like you too busy guzzling the koolaid to understand it...FACT, The last Windows version Linux could compete against?" Windows ME...how long ago was that? 2000? Because Windows 2K actually PASSES the challenge, in fact it can go from RTM to EOL without shitting itself (which is about 8 years longer than any Linux "user friendly" distro can do), XP can go RTM to EOL which is FOURTEEN YEARS, twelve years longer than Linux, and Vista through 8.1 can go from RTM to current.
So you keep right on living in crazy land, where having a flatline for 22 years is considered a "success", where guys like you are so foolish to think Android is FOSS while they quietly released bog standard laptops that are so locked down they can't even run an OS without a bootloader hack or even run dual boot, meanwhile I'll keep printing the challenge to show people your emperor not only has no clothes but has shat down both legs and is playing with it like a chimp. And guys like you wonder why your kind have become the Butt of jokes?

Penny Arcade had a comic that is probably relevant to that topic: (in the first frame). GitHub's opinions on diversity and inclusiveness don't matter much. If GitHub service becomes lousy, then I'll stop using their services, that's about it. -

Re:Indeed
Nobody's trying to "smear" GamerGate, we read what you write in your own words on 8chan,
/r/KIA, and under the #gamergate hashtag.A movement with no spokesmen, which communicates primarily through venues that enforce total anonymity by default is awfully convenient for those who would use "their words" against them, since any 15-year old child on his smartphone can - and will - be held up as representative of the entire group. This is simply an extension of the "cyber-bullying" cause, where people try to conflate toss-off statements posted anonymously on the internet with serious and credible death threats. Through an anonymous, geographically remote medium like an imageboard, the possible consequences of saying nearly anything are almost nonexistent - so people say whatever they can, just because they can. It takes little wherewithal, conviction or true feeling to type "you are bad and deserve to be raped," whereas making the same threat in person almost guarantees a visit from stern men in institutional blue; which is why they're taken seriously - the motivation required to prompt it must be that much more severe. The personalities at the center of this "Gamergate" fracas make a policy of conflating the former with the latter to enhance their claims of victimhood - and if the baseless internet trashtalk isn't pouring in fast enough, they'll start actively baiting the trolls themselves.
Your entire movement started when Adam Baldwin tweeted links to YouTube videos smearing a female game dev's sex life because her ex-boyfriend wanted to run a hate campaign against her.
It sure did! And if said dev had replied in a different fashion, it would've been utterly forgotten by now. I've got a bachelors in Journalism, and I can tell you that absolutely nobody with a quarter of a brain or over the age of 20 is at all surprised that industry publications are little better than shills for the advertisers that provide all their income. The difficulty of monetizing online journalism (a task even major, respected mainstream news publications have struggled with) almost guaranteed it'd be even worse for online gaming websites. It's not exactly breaking news to anyone. It should've been a minor story only a few cared about, and died a quiet death when the muddy nature of the allegations became clear.
But that's not what happened.
What happened was a game developer resorting to moral fiat argument; i.e. my critics are sexist and thus automatically evil and wrong. At a stroke this transformed the issue; it went from some nobody indie dev arguing with nobody internet nerds to An Attack On Women. This alone polarized the issue and involved a massive preexisting base of communities, activists and political context (which was the goal, of course.) But what really blew the flames into a forest fire was the obvious collusion and outright slander by the gaming news sites being criticized: they all published "gamers are dead" articles arguing that "gamer culture" had been completely overtaken by sexism and misogyny, the implication being that anyone who identified as a "gamer" (i.e. all the people criticizing them,) was by definition a sexist, misogynistic bastard, and their opinions could and should be rejected out of hand.
This kind of argument tactic is nothing new in the political sphere - moral fiat arguing backed by complicit media outlets is a staple of left-wing strategy, as best evidenced by theCindy Sheehan phenomena. I've watched it in action for years. But when I was writing political op-eds on a home-grown website run by me and a few highschool friends, all my peers were playing Halo tournaments -
Re:Dune was good just took a few chapters to grab
You may want to remember that Frank Herbert wrote only first six--and the last two were done a couple of years before he died. After that it was his son, Brian Herbert, in conjunction with Kevin J. Anderson, work about which some people, well, have a rather low opinion.
No I wasn't aware.
Reminds me then of the L. Ron Hubbard's series "Mission Earth" it's a 10 volume set. It's said he died while writing it, someone taking over the story. I can tell you where it happened - volume 3 it went stupid after that one, just ridiculous. I have the 10 volume hard back set (hopeful collectors item) but just collected the last 6 (unread).

It's inevitable and it's going to happen more. They are both from the dark side so who cares for any of these frauds. Re:funny...
Exactly. This sounds like a lame attempt to distract from the real problem which is Microsoft garbage. Microsoft goes to great lengths to censor stories about their problems. My old roommate was fired for not lying to the FBI about one of the many thousands of Microsoft bugs. Microsoft requires their employees to lie to the FBI. That is how dishonest their kind is. They hate the fact that more and more people are calling them on the problems they create. That is why they got rid of most of the Windows QA. They don't want anyone in the company to know just how bad their garbage is. I lost my job for reporting too many bugs. They hate me.
Did you write that from your parent's basement in Wyoming?

John Gabriel's Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory:

I think it explains half, mostly the trolling half.
The other half is the fact that people speak up when they're passionate about something, and there's nothing that makes you as passionate as thinking you know the truth when everyone else is wrong.
Personally I think the solution is to speak up even when you don't care that much. You can't convince the fringe players that they're wrong, but you can demonstrate to them (and others) that the fringe viewpoint is a minority one.

Re:I fail to see how it's any worse than other UIs
Anyone who "expects" device Y to behave like device X when they're from different vendors is a fool.
Not have as much of a fool as anyone who forgets that human beings aren't a collection of logic gates. However much we like to consider ourselves rational agents. Human beings generalise, which makes it difficult to remember whether the application your using uses shift-ctrl-z or ctrl-y for redo... which is why most programmers have standardise on shift-ctrl-z.
Penny Arcade's Extra Credits did a video a couple of years back on why Microsoft Kinect was the uncanny valley of input devices. (Kinect Disconnect) Their argument was that it was just too close to real movement to accept whatever was missing. It was +5 insightful, but I think they missed something -- successful motion interfaces (including in the movies) aren't ones that simulate direct manipulation, but ones that mimic a formalised, restricted sign language: ie the operator is simply telling the computer what to do.
I said even when I was at uni (turn of the century) that the GUI was going to hold back voice recognition, as it hid users from the command-line style that is even today a core element of computer workflow, and which would be needed for accurate voice control to work.
Voice recognition is a mess because it swings between two extremes -- ultra-free-but-prone-to-errors, ultra-restrictive-because-kids-these-days-dont-understand-command-lines-gedoffmylawn. If we had prepared users for codified formal languages, we'd be able to implement expressive voice recognition interfaces.

Re:Three-month-old Continuum screenshot
I'm running it on the weakest system I have ATM, an AMD netbook with an E350 APU, 8GB of RAM (yes I know that is overkill, I scored the RAM on sale crazy cheap) and a 320Gb 5400 RPM drive. I figured that if it ran well on a system this weak it'll run good on anything...the verdict? Even with all the drivers running in compatibility mode it runs BETTER than Win 7 on the same hardware, it even has hardware acceleration for video that is smoother than the Win 7 that came with it!
Anybody whose followed my posts know that I don't talk nice about a version of Windows unless it deserves it, I HATE Windows 8, thought it was a frankentard of an OS, hated everything about Vista except for the cool black theme (which I still use on my Win 7 systems) and think Win 7 is the best OS they've made since XP X64 so when I say Win 10 looks like its gonna be a GREAT OS I don't say that lightly, in fact the only way I see them fucking it up is on the pricing side, the OS itself? its damned good. Takes just a couple minutes to get rid of the social crap (which I can't even get mad at that, lots of people like to be tweeting twits taking social shits) and once I added 8 gadgetpack to get back my CPUMeter and NetworkMeter? I was a happy camper.
And I would just like to say how happy I am to see the death of the "Charms" bar, that thing was retarded! But then again damned near everything about Ballmer's Folly was shit design from the start so the fact that charms was stupid really isn't a surprise. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

The greater internet fuckwad theory posits that anonymity is a negative influence, but anonymity also allows people to express themselves without exposing themselves to harassment.

Macs Don't Seem To Handle Heat WellI came to the conclusion that macs really don't handle heat very well after some research online when my old Mac Pro desktop burned up its ATI video card. There were a lot of posts out there from people who'd had the same problem, as well as a lot of people having heat-related issues with their Mac laptops. The solution at the time was to crank the fans up until the whole thing sounded like a 747 taking off. After that machine burned up its replacement video card 6 months later, I ended up slapping a lower-end nvidia card on it. It never had a problem after that -- the nvidia card couldn't get hot enough to burn itself up. That machine's going to get repurposed as a linux-running file server real soon now.
There were some other heat related problems with Mac laptops around that time, as well.
Not that I'm trying to slam Apple. They were actually really good about replacing a board in a 13" PowerPC Macbook Pro I'd purchased with their extended warranty plan some years later after I'd handed the machine down to my room mate. She'd started having problems with the screen going off and took it in to the local Apple store. They checked their computer and said the machine had the extended warranty plan (I'd forgotten I'd even purchased with it) and did the repair for free. We were both ready to write the machine off but she got another couple of years of use out of it. I'm still using a 17" Macbook pro from 2006 on a regular basis, too. it still works great for what it needs to do and nothing I could upgrade it to really seems as nice as that machine is.

Re:What?
This. Someone forgot that troll protocol 101 is to ignore the troll. No matter how outrageous the slur. Someone is equating internet trolling with credible threats. The silence is therefore not misongynic assent, it is years of Internet culture training.
I'm a man, I've been threatened directly by trolls, and the only way to make them go away was to set up a kill filter and forget what a remailing bastard's ethics eventually spiral down toward. The severity of the outburst is belied by its impotence. CF: Gabriel's Internet Fuckwad Theory.
Things also tend to get exaggerated in text forums; this is a natural symptom of text medium discussions. A mildly worded response of displeasure is not enough to express severe displeasure in text. So things get "fuckity," at the very least. Nobody thinks it should get to the level of death threats, but sometimes it does, because someone wants to get a rise out of someone in text.
Now what gamers, and other internet board goers, have to understand is that feminist protocol 101 is go after anyone who threatens a woman, no matter how non-credible the threat, in order to silence her. This is a foregone conclusion to anyone who is a feminist. They are doing what their culture indicates they should do, as an automatic reaction. In face-to-face, physically close communication, it is a foregone conclusion. You must not back down from it, because historically women have been intimidated out of social spaces in exactly this way. It is part of making the world a safe space for women. The record is a winning one, and isn't about neutering men, it's about fighting gender based domination plays.
What we have here is a culture clash. Internet 101 meets feminism 101. Both views work in different ways that are fundamentally in conflict. The only way it goes away is to stop telling the women to "toughen up," take them seriously by their cultural touchstone, and tell them personally that physical threats are intolerable, but best ignored on the Internet. If a threat is viewed to be particularly credible, it is better to go to the police than to petition the greater Internet community to "shame" them, as if shaming would stop a credible threat in the first place.
And various people have had to go to the authorities over GG. The threats have been perceived as credible, no matter what your opinion. If you cannot wrap your skull around that, sit it out and don't tell people to "get over" what they perceive to be real threats. Support them.

Re:Speaking for myselfYou mean generally racist or ultra-violent cartoons? By the time I started watching cartoons in the mid 70's, most of the really racist stuff wasn't being played anymore, but last time I rolled through Europe, Cartoon Network was playing a lot of the older Warner Brothers cartoons. I thought I pretty much knew the score there, but that was a bit of an eye-opener. Simpsons in German when you're jetlagged out of your skull is really fun, though.
Most of the cartoons of the 70's were crap. Remember the old Spider Man or Star Trek cartoons? They didn't seem like they ran that long. I'm pretty sure the writers used a lot of LSD. Justice League and Scooby Doo were just formulaic crap. I don't recall the Flintstones or Jetsons being overtly bad, but I don't remember them being particularly good either. And that was the A list. Once noon rolled around, things went from bad to worse. I had to get that in there somehow.
As bad as all that was, though, it was worse in Japan. I lived my first 5 years in Japan. Anime depicting decapitations and blood everywhere seemed to be kids' fare there in the early 70s. Somehow they still all seemed to end up growing up less fucked-up overall than we did. Assuming that you consider them getting vending machines with used panties and us getting the mass-murder-of-the-week club them growing up less fucked up. Seems like things went slightly better over there to me.

Re:gtfo
There is a lot of ugly misogyny in games. This is because such a large percentage of gamers are scumbags or young men who engage in the online equivalent of pulling a girl's pigtails because she makes them feel funny in the pants and they don't yet know why.
Thats not misogyny, its a behavior predicted by Penny Arcade's Gabe years ago and it transcends gender. When someone says theyre going to rape my mother because of my performance in a game, I can either interpret it as a misogynistic attack on the female gender, or I can realize that I got out of the third grade a long, long time ago and people who want to be foul cant actually hurt me with their words.
Seriously, just because someone calls your mother fat doesnt mean that theres a rape culture, it means some people act like children and should be ignored. Grow up.
