Re:PNG
IE still does not fully support PNG graphics, specifically, it does not support alpha blending, one of the major features of PNG.
True, but JPEG and GIF don't support alpha blending on any browser, so it's not as if the lack of alpha support in IE is holding people to those older formats.
Still, alpha transparency is a Good Thing, that many web artists would use to good effect if Microsoft would let them. There is a petition to get MS to fix IE.

International Apple users take note
Am I the only one dismayed this is a U.S. only feature?
First iPhoto prints and hardback book ordering is U.S. only.
Then Sherlock is practically useless in non-U.S. countries.
Now this service IS useless. And there is no promise to bring it to international customers.
International users pay the same amount for our product, why do we lose out on some functionality? If you are an International (non-U.S.) Apple customer, then I invite you to sign the petition to promote more international-mindedness at Apple, which can be found here
Apple Features for International users petition
Please sign it if you are an international user frustrated by non being able to use this new service. (Moderators, if you have a mod or two to spare, I'm not below asking to mod this up if you feel Apple needs to spend more attention to the international community :) -Nex -
And guess what?
Yes, that's right, 8 years later, Internet Explorer still doesn't support PNG properly!

Petition to sign
"An industrious reader already has a petition up and ready for you to sign. If you would like to voice your support you can find the petition here.
From Gabe of Penny Arcade, there were 3509 signatures when I posted this.
I know it has some spelling mistakes but hey, I didn't write it. The kid who did is trying to get it fixed. I guess you can't just change the text of a petition after a couple thousand people have signed it." -
There's a boycott
The boys have started a petition stating that the signers will boycott American Greetings until the comic is allowed to be shown.
Let's show 'em what happens when slashdot readers get wind of something like this. -
He just doesn't understaaaaannnndd.
TiVi just simply frees you from your TV while letting you watch more of what you want to watch. It is a Zen thing. And with the Gen 2 Home Media Option which allows sharing program conent from room to room and playing Mac or PC hosted photo and MP3 content over the TiVo it just keeps getting better. (BTW DirectTv has declined to offer the HMO upgrade even though they'd make $99 for the first receiver and $49 for each addition upgraded receiver in the same household. A petition is available online to allow one to voice their wish for DirectTv to reconsider. It is available here.

It varies
I'm not entirely sure, but some companies, such as id with Quake III, have released SDK (Software Development Kit) in order to help players create their own maps and stuff (see e.g. this Linux Quake III SDK). But other companies, such as EA with Battlefield 1942, haven't released any SDK for their game engine. But many mods have been created for BF1942 without an SDK: Desert Combat, Black Hawk Down, Soldier9's Realism Mod, and others.
If you do a search on Google for 'battlefield 1942 mod', the first thing that appears is this petition :-) -
Linux support...Before anyone else says it, there are Linux drivers available, although they are in their early stages.
The wlan-ng project has early stage support for the wusb12 card.
More details available @ the Linux-USB device site.Luckily they don't use the hideous Broadcom chipset, which still does not have Linux support, even though it's sold in Dell, Linksys, Belkin and Apple (new Powerbooks, anyone?) wireless products, to name but a few. *grr*

Slashback: Ecosystem, Social Networks, TiVo
Every once in a while, I'm really motivated by a Slashdot post, and explore the problem further with some quick and light research and writing. By the time I've finished, most readers and moderators have long since left the post for fresher news and I'm left with a relatively small audience. In the spirit of Slashback I thought I could reincarnate those old posts for a second viewing.
While risking my Karma for something that could be seen as off topic, I do think it adds value to Slashdot and really doesn't fit anywhere else.
Ecosystem and Economy: In response to the standard environmentalist-versus-economist arguments that were flying about in a previous Slashdot post in reference to a Daily Telegraph article, I sought out a fresh viewpoint based on reductionism and the conservation of energy.
Social Network Theory: A Slashdot post led to a Register article, which was steeped in an unusual amount conspiracy theory. Suggesting that Google was gamed by a group of A-list bloggers, perhaps it is all simply just a result of social networks. This is a new topic to me, so if you know anything about social network theory, I'd love it if someone could take me to school.
First-Generation TiVo: In a discussion concerning second-generation TiVos I thought I'd whip up a quick script that would allow people to see what I'm currently watching as proof that my house wields the mighty sword of TiVo modding.
Mystery Treasure: I also put a not-so-well hidden page on my site to see if anyone would gravitate towards it, but it as of yet remains undiscovered. Hint: MSIE users will not get far. Consider it pay back for not doing PNG transparency. :P

Re:DIRECTV users left out in cold
Yeah this really pissed me off. I bought a DirecTiVo Series 2 box in anticipation of the new HMO features. Now my roommate is going to have a better TiVo than me! (Damn him!)
I can't really blame TiVo, though, it was DirecTV's decision not to offer the feature. TiVo gave complete control of the DirecTiVo featureset to DirecTV some time back.
If you're in the same boat as me, there's an online petition here. From the tone of the DirecTV VP that made the announcement, it looks like if there's enough demand, they might change thier minds and release it anyway. So please do us all a favor and slashdot the petition! -
Re:Anti-TiVo FUD
I love my DirecTiVo too. But did you know that DirecTV is totally screwing their DirecTiVo customers by deciding not to offer the TiVo Home Media Option? Sign the petition here.

¡Try Any Version Of MacOS!
Step # 4678533: swing a chicken over your head for confirming that Windows is ready for step # 4678534.
With any version of MacOS, one just drags the icon for the application to the Trash and delete it. This works because of the MacOS stores data on HFS (Hierarchical File-System), HFS+ (Hierarchical File-System Plus), and HFS+J (Hierarchical File-System Plus Journaled):
Classic MacOS puts all of the data for an application into two forks:
- Datafork
- Resourcefork
What these forks do does not matter for our purposes. All we need to know is that the two forks are tarred together. One simply throws away the application-file.
In System Ten, for reasons of compatiblity, with other Unices, Applications are folders, which, in standard view, look like files. One simply puts the object into the trash and empty it.
The only remains of an application are in:
/Users/~/Library/Caches/Application-Name/ /Users/~/Library/Application Support/Application-Name /Users/~/Library/Preferences/Application-Name.plis t
Preferences are always small files in an XML-language called PLIST. Application support is full of usually small files such as MBOX, Bookmarks, er cetera. The only folder which might fold large ammounts of data is Caches; but luckily however, that gets dumped weekly anyway. Drag-deleting an Application in MacOS only leave a single-digit number of kilobyes of data in Preferences and Application Support.
The reverse of uninstalling in MacOS is just as easy:
For installing, one simply drops the application into:
/Users/~/Applications/If one is an Administrative User, one can alternatively drop them into:
/Application/It is that simple.

.. You ask Microsoft and they'll say yes. Meanwhile in the real world, no they don't.
It can handle gif-like transparency (single colour transparency) normally. But to support 8 bit alpha level transparency, you have to use a script to 'make it' do it. Here's some example links:

The Slashdot Moderation Investigation
One of the dirty secrets of Slashdot is the editor's abuse of the moderation system. They mass-moderate comments in threads that they don't like, and sometimes even mod down all the comments of users they don't like. Even malicious users who don't like you for whatever reason can abuse certain moderations and not be penalized for it. Some misdirected noble users have tried coming up with ways not to play this moderation game, which is useless because Slashdot track karma by IP address. But, why should we inconvienence ourselves in order to suit the abuse of despots?
I would like to take this opportunity to declare the opening of a petition for the Slashdot editors to fit the moderation system of Slashdot to the people. It is located here, and I estimate at least 1000 signatures are needed in order for the powers that be to take it seriously.
If you still need convincing of the impurities of the moderation system, look at my exhaustive research here.

Risk is more dependant on your software
Obviously, I think most of us with a reasonable schooling in software would agree that applications written in C++ are the biggest security threat for PCs today. This is why you've been seeing more and more Java based applications on the PC lately. Most of the C++ vulnerability comes from a single, well known, and often exploited bug in the Windows C++ virtual machine. This bug allows C++ programmers to access protected and private data that is SUPPOSED to be secured by the C++ virtual machine. Here's a simple example of a crack that would allow a C++ programmer to access improperly secured data:
Let's say we have this class called PersonalFinances:
Class PersonalFinances
{
private:
char creditCardNumber[16];
};
To bypass the Windows C++ security manager, all we need to do is write some code like this:
Main( )
{
Finances finances; // Forge a pointer to peek inside the class
char *cardno = (char*)
printf("Stolen credit card number = %s\n", cardno);
}
Simple as that... we have stolen "secure" data. Curiously enough, this code sample came from O'Reilly's "Learning Java" book. This book was first printed in 2000, which means that this critical security bug has been known for over 3 years! I find it quite unbelievable that this lack of response (from Microsoft) is tolerated in the software community. Why haven't they responded? Simple... MONEY. Rather than maintain old code, Microsoft would rather push their new .Net framework as a new standard and make big cash off of its widespread adoption. Another way that MS will profit from this security hole is by pushing their dreaded Palladium scheme on us. Palladium, put simply, is just a hardware solution for this exact sort of security issue. Meanwhile, we consumers sacrifice our privacy through insecure software so Microsoft, Intel, and AMD can reap big profits sometime in the future.
If you are fed up with these monopolistic profit schemes, this is what you do. Start or support an open source Windows C++ virtual machine project. A port from the Linux VM should be possible.
A second parallel approach should be to put political pressure on Microsoft to fix this issue. I've started this petition to get things started. Please sign and forward the link to everyone!
We DEMAND better protection of our privacy!!! -

CmdrTaco...
The past few weeks, I have been looking into how Slashdot has changed over the past few years and I have come to a very disturbing conclusion.
Remember how CmdrTaco implemented the friend and foe system? Well, as you probably know, he has created an account
called No More Trolls and as indicated by this journal entry, CmdrTaco is out to censor Slashdot through proxy-like means.
Of course, if we want to go way back to the winter, I can refer to this comment where the Slashdot admins decided to "bitchslap" this post to the very ends of the Earth. Or I could refer to this petition asking Slashdot to stop what it is doing with moderator points and the two posts a day limit with -10 karma accounts. Of course, Jamie says otherwise.
Oh wait, censoring is bad according to Slashdot! Just look at all the articles that they post on major corporations trying to stop the flow of free speech. Oh wait, trolls are bad and aren't contributing to anything, lets make sure that they cannot be seen but still allow posting! Lets control how much they post in a day!
CmdrTaco, you state that you have an open and free enviroment here. Cut the crap and admit that you do not like the way the system is. If you at least admit it there is some decency in all of this but otherwise, I think you're being a twat over this and deserve nothing but shit from everybody. As stated in the first journal entry I posted, what will you do if this gets sold to a major corporation such as AOL/TW? Do you seriously think they'll allow free speech to continue on this website?
"News for nerds. Stuff that matters" is a farce as it should be "Linux rules. Microsoft drools."
Feel free to reply, moderate, whatever. -
