Re:I've picked these up on short wave
And if you're going to steal, get it right! George's wording was far better:
"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered."
See? That word: squandered. Much, much better than wasted. You can waste anything but only riches can be squandered. And you forgot the fast cars. Unforgivable. -

Re:So. It was proven pointless long before that.
The third WTC building on 911 collapsed without ANYTHING touching it. It just collapsed straight down as if it had been demolished. They even abandoned it first. It was UNDAMAGED until it collapsed.
You're waaaay behind the times, buddy.
http://www.kolumbus.fi/av.caesar/wtc/wtc7_2.jpg
http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/3990/wtc7roof7p z.jpg
It well known by people on the ground that WTC7 was going to collapse.
Here's some accounts from firefighters on the scene that day. They describe the severe structural damage, large fires, and the potential for collapse. The HOLE in the pentagon was not large enough for the plane that struck.
Wrong.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e207/Mercury2/pe nt-foam-small2.jpg
Beyond that, you still have to explain the downed street lights along the highway, and the damage generator.
You should watch this video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=YVDdjLQkUV8The jet fuel of an airliner doesn't burn hot enough to melt the structural steel that was used in the WTC buildings. Yet they found molten steel in the wreckage.
Absolute idiocy. The steel certainly doesn't have to melt before it fails. And what does the alleged molten metal actually prove? Explosives don't melt steel, and they certainly aren't capable of keeping that steel molten weeks after they've been detonated.
Thermite/thermate doesn't fit the alleged phenomenon either, unless you're suggesting that there was so much of the stuff at the site that it was burning for weeks in order to keep the metal in a liquefied state. (We've all seen videos of thermite at work. The metal resolidifies within a minute after the thermite is expended.)http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-784274
Here's a better video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=dWemhf8fZ2w1 50 9736411725&q=wtc+3
That was not an airplane strike, it was demolition.
It clearly shows the eastern mechanical penthouse collapsing into the building a full 5 seconds before the western penthouse collapses, followed immediately by the rest of the building. Not nearly as clean as you'd like people to believe by showing them only one video of the collapse.
Stop fooling yourself, please. -

several machines
About 2 years ago I decided to get into hobbie prop building. One of the first things I built was a vacuum-forming table out of some MDF an empty beer keg a bit of metal from Home depot and a home built heating element.
http://24.251.127.62:8088/gallery/vacformtable
I have used this thing to make several diffirent things from speaker boxes to Stormtrooper armor. It has been a blast. The latest project I have made has been a rotocast machine.
http://s14.photobucket.com/albums/a331/arsonsmith/ Rotocast%20Machine/
I started by building the lego mock up at the bottom of that link then started aquaring the other parts. It has been used to make several diffirent things from replica guns to costume masks and helmets. -

Re:Ingenuity
It would be really nice if OpenOffice imitated the UI of Office 2004 for OS X or Abiword for OS X. It's very good. Here's a screen shot.
It would also rock if they dropped the current UI toolkit and switched to wxWidgets or QT. Then it would finally feel responsive and look native. Same for Mozilla. -

PS3 Related CrimeYep, it sure is great that the PS3 is out. The account on Kotaku listed in the summary is nothing, however. :)* Mind you, "limited" is relative. A 200MHz ARM9 chip with 32M ram, 4GB flash drive, 2.4 kernel and Busybox beats the 486/25, 16M ram, 200M hard drive with Slackware 2.1 that I used to run my multi-user BBS on, while playing nethack, quite nicely. (Kids these days...)

Re:Paper Ballots?
If the general public has a hard time filling in a circle on a paper (which is how I vote, I'm in the military so I vote absentee), they will have a much harder time using a computer. The self-verification process of a computer is the problem, because the self-verifying process is what's corrupted and prone to hacking. Check out the simple easy sample paper ballot I designed. It's pretty close to what I use when I vote. If somebody can't figure that out, they don't need to be voting.

Re:Well.. everybody has an opinion...
Witness the Zune. I am prepared to predict that the Zune doesn't really steal the market from the iPod, much in the same way the xBox didn't from the Playstation. But the Zune will be profitable. That is my prediction.
Do you expect that argument to have any credibility in the context you put it in? DO you realize how vastly unprofitable the Xbox was? And that's what you're holding up to say that the Zune has a chance in hell?
Have a look at this graph. It shows console sales over time where t0 is the release date for each console. Now go rethink your argument. -

Re:How is this like the Compaq thing?
The question we should be asking, is why is US growth so low, and how can we fix it.
Your post has the answer to your question:
Contrary to popular belief, a substantial amount of engineering for Dell is done in the US, not in Taiwan. Employees have constructed an effective wall to foreign design centers and have actually left the company any time mgmt has tried to tear it down (thanks to HP for showing employees what to be afraid of).
Dell is an exception, rather than the rule. Jobs have been fleeing the United States for years... First it was manufacturing, then engineering/technology too. Foodservice and low-level Health Care positions don't pay nearly as well as manufacturing, IT, or engineering used to. Wages in the jobs that are still in North America are being squeezed by competition from low-wage China and elsewhere.
There's no chance of fixing the economy now - the time for action was in 1992/1993, when Traitor Bush the Elder first negotiated the North American Free Trade Agreement and Traitor Clinton pushed the NAFTA implementation bills through the congress. Or in 1995 when the World Trade Organization was first organized. Or in the 80's, when Reagan (really, Puppet Master Bush the Elder) was printing money to pay for his military buildup. Or in the late 60's/early 70's, when the Feral Government was printing money to pay for the Vietnam war. Or even more recently, when Traitor Bush the Junior negotiated the Central American Free Trade Agreement (and others).
There's also the hordes of illegal immigrants (encouraged by the corptocracy) depressing working class wages... But vdare was yesterday's story...
The best we can do now is elect a congress who will impeach/convict the Bush/Cheney junta. Tell your friends - Fire the [republican] incumbents, the Bush depression has already begun.
Economic restructuring is a good thing, because many of us are miserable in the current political/economic climate. Look at the people you see out in WalMart's isles: fat & sick, and looking for satisfaction in meaningless trinkets. Going to get a little rough, but it will certainly be worth the struggle in the end.
I've some earthboxes and seeds, so I won't be entirely dependant on produce shipments from far away, picked by mexican slave labor.
These earthbox pictures are from 3 weeks ago (start with the last picture). The plants are coming along nicely, and I'll be harvesting my first lettuce & tomatos soon (I'm in the desert southwest, so the plant-killing summer heat has just recently abated). -
hiding a big secretWhy is everyone so sureal. Any look at the numbers is just terrible, do people understand that the dollar can't make it as a global reserve currency for more than a few more years and likely can't make it as a currency at all within the next decade?
I add to a list of quotes every so often, and I noticed this one a couple days back:Greg: Another chapter in your book is, "Death by Denial." People seem to be in total denial as far as what's making them sick and overweight. Is that what you touch on in this chapter?
Carolyn: Yes. I even refer to Elizabeth Kubler-Ross's work on the five stages of death and dying that people go through. When it comes to the death of our society, the death of our culture, we are in complete denial of what's going on. You see, we don't think governments or business could be that sinister -- that they would rather make money than be concerned about human health. Instead of accepting this fact, people have put their head in the sand. They've got to wake up to the reality that the government and corporations are corrupt and simply don't care about our health. What Marshall McLuhan said is that only puny secrets need protection. **Big secrets are protected by public incredulity, and that's where we are now.**
-Death by Modern Medicine [healthliesexposed.com] (emphasis added)
While the context is about health, the statement about "public incredulity" is equally applicable to the coming banking collapse. Most people seem to think that "the United States are too big to fail"... Aren't they going to be in for a surprise.
Newsflash: infinite budget deficits are unsustainable. The rest of the world has been financing the twin deficits (Feral Government budget deficit and the trade/current account deficit) for decades. Sooner or later China will pull the rug out from under the U.S. economy, perhaps when they figure they've taken all the industrial capacity they can get and we're no longer useful to them.
I'm using this opprotunity to load my credit card with useful things. Bought ten earthboxes a few weeks back, and dirt/fertilizer/plants/etc. When the system finally goes, I'll have some tasty vegetables, to go with a couple sacks of dry beans/rice/wheat.
pictures of my earthboxen (start with the last picture)... These were from 3 weeks ago, going to put some more recent pics up soon. -

I play mine on a 1982 Sharp VZ 3500, a pretty decent setup (about $1500 back in the day) which has auto both-sides-play for LPs and auto-detects and queues the size of record you've inserted. Some corrections
The "2000 bit passkey" is really the disk encryption keys for loop-aes. See http://loop-aes.sourceforge.net/loop-AES.README . They are longer than 2000 bits.
The disk encryption keys are stored on USB and decrypted via passphrase (key encryption key) using a custom init process that mounts the encrypted loop-aes disk(s) and does the pivot_root / exec init into the target. This gives you full disk encryption booting from a trusted read-only kernel+initrd iso image. (or hdd bootloader)
The "instant off" is the key zeroisation mechanism where loop-aes keys (rotated in memory) are flushed and the disks are now inaccesible. A reboot and passphrase auth with USB key device present is then required to get back to a working state.
The use of 8 radios means most of them are in monitor mode attached to different antennas. There are two amplified cards (1W teletronics in line) which can be used for injection / active attacks, but 2 transmitting radios is about the limit practically speaking due to 802.11MAC / CSCA.
The WPA/WPA2 cracking references WPA-PSK dictionary attacks / cowpatty speedup via the Padlock hash engine SHA1 instruction. This gives you about a 10-20x increase in dictionary attack throughput but is still slow compared to most attacks. Many other kernel functions (loop-aes, IPsec, entropy in /dev/random) and user space applications (openssl, openvpn) are also tweaked to utilize the padlock core described here: http://www.via.com.tw/en/initiatives/padlock/hardw are.jsp . Montgomery multiplication offload is still in the works...
[The "breaking SHA1 and RSA encryption in a single processor instruction cycle" line appears to confuse the implementation of these primitives (SHA1/MontMult) in a single instruction. These are not cracked by a single instruction.]
The comment about government sales is likely due to the fact that this system is well over FCC EIRP limits, thus restricting commercial sales to military or emergency services.

What About INTERNATIONAL CAPS LOCK DAY?
IN HONOR OF THE SUBJECT MATERIAL, I HAVE CHOSEN TO USE THE CAPS LOCK FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE FOR THIS POST.
On second thought, that's far too annoying.
If the proposed abolishment of caps lock keys is successful, I grow concerned about what myself and my predecessors will celebrate on INTERNATIONAL CAPS LOCK DAY which happens to be October 22. And don't tell me it's not a real holiday because that is one convincing website. It has a news flash with a picture of a potato, uses the word "bitches" and has a countdown for the days remaining to INTERNATIONAL CAPS LOCK DAY. And look at this other reputable site, Out House Rag that also backs INTERNATIONAL CAPS LOCK DAY. That's more than Adults Day in Japan has to say! Please, if I have to put up with one more Nevada Day (October 31) the least you can do is let me have my INTERNATIONAL CAPS LOCK DAY. Please don't remove your caps lock key because they're not evil!
You know, there's this horrible site that actually encourages you to remap your caps lock to a more suitable function ... but of course that would just be sacrilegious and a very dangerous process (don't try it at home!). -

And the witchhunt is on, pot vs. kettle
Not about the image that the original post is about, but about what happens after something like this gets out. Read this blog post:
http://powerlineblog.com/archives/014929.php
A fine example of a blogger making a fool of themself, doing the exact same thing they are accusing Reuters of doing. Read my response to it:
----
The only photograph that strikes me as somewhat odd is the bottom image http://powerlineblog.com/archives/Hajj4567.jpg.
The other 4 images are clearly photographs of the same scene. Let me give you my view on the positioning of the photographers in each.
#1 : http://powerlineblog.com/archives/Hajj1234.jpg
This picture was taken with a regular angle lens, say somthing like 35mm, towards a building, across the bridge that is out. The photographer was standing close to the right side of the road (when viewed in this direction). The car in the next picture is out of the frame, to the left of the photographer. The photographer is too far from the actual damage to get a good shot of it. The actual damage is close to the right shoulder of the man in the center of the image, off to the left.
#2 : http://powerlineblog.com/archives/Hajj1245.jpg
This picture has been taken from the opposite side of the road from #1, i.e. the left, shooting in the same direction. The photographer will have used a telelens, say 200mm. This pulls in the distant background and seems to place the pilons in the center of the road closer together. Note the tree white and red pilons, with the overturned fourth. Now look at #1 again, you will notice the same three pilons with the overturned one pointing towards the photographer. Also not that the two palms and the car on the right side of the road are visible in #1 as well, off in the distance.
Again, this picture has been shot across the destroyed bridge, which is now partly obscured by the car and the man. But you can make out the concrete mesh fragments sticking off the right shoulder of the man, to the right.
#3 : http://powerlineblog.com/archives/Hajj2345.jpg
In #3, the photopgrapher has arrived at the collapsed bridge. From this angle, the photographer, shooting with something like the 35mm again, can shoot into the gap, clearly showing the damage. The photographer is now well past the car in #2, but the other car is still visible across the gap. The car in #3 is actually visible in all of the images, as is the building in the background, though very poorly in #1.
#4 : http://powerlineblog.com/archives/Hajj3456.jpg
In #4, the photographer has moved back beyond the overturned car. Or, about as likely, #4 was actually taken before #1. The photographer is now so far back and to the left, that the small watchtower is also in the frame.
The allegations in the piece are sensationalist and don't stand up to scrutiny. The author (and powerlineblog) are doing exactly what they are accusing Reuters of doing: posting material without a critical and sceptical review. If the bottom photo (#5, http://powerlineblog.com/archives/Hajj4567.jpg) was published as a photo of the same incident, that's not right But some of the comments on the other 4 are simply wrong.
I've included a schematic drawing of the scene as I think it was, for your reference. Note that I was there no more than the author was and that errors in my reasoning or schematics should in no way impact what Reuters and Hajj have to say for themselves.
