Re:Congrats Linus
Trigger warnings: You know the bit at the start of the TV show where they say "viewer discretion advised, contains flashing images and scenes of a violent nature"? That's what they want to block, the thing that warns people with epilepsy that they might be triggered, and that people like soldiers suffering from PTSD might want to avoid it. They say they won't support lecturers saying "we are going to look at photos of soldiers who lost limbs today", because... screw vets trying to get an education?
I am in awe of your ability to build a strawman. A weaponized strawman really.
Go read what the U of Chicago wrote, and it is not "screw vets trying to get an education". They are fighting the Millenials trend of trigger warnings on everything, and of treating different opinions as triggers.
If something is truly triggering (you gave two examples) then put a trigger warning on it. The college freshmen of 2016 are demanding trigger warnings on everything:
For the rest of the semester, I gave trigger warnings before every scene I screened. Every. Single. One. This wasnâ(TM)t enough.
I donâ(TM)t know about trigger warnings outside classes that deal with race, gender and sexuality, but I do know that if you promote trigger warnings in subjects that are supposed to make people feel uncomfortable, youâ(TM)re basically promoting a culture of extreme privilege, cause Iâ(TM)m pretty sure that the trans women who are being murdered weekly, the black men who are victims of police brutality daily, and the neighborhoods in America that are plagued by everyday violence, arenâ(TM)t given any trigger warnings. Letâ(TM)s be honest: life is a trigger.
And the part about "we won't uninvite someone we invited just because he might say controversial things" was in response to multiple occasions recently where a university uninvited a conservative speaker after liberal students said they cannot bear to be exposed to opposing viewpoints. U of Chicago took a firm stance in favor of open debate and in opposition to forming a bubble to shield students from the "wrong" opinions.
So great job conflating a stance for open intellectual debate with hatred for veterans. You just showed us how to argue dishonestly at a high skill level! Unless you were speaking from the heart, in which case you need to read about this more and think some more. If you truly are deeply and passionately devoted to stamping out free intellectual debate, then fuck you, but I can't imagine you really want that.

Re:They disrupeed our plans! We want blood!
The artists, who took time from their lives to produce the music, won't get paid.
The artists were never going to be paid.
Releasing a single gets them into more debt with their label, and as noted by an AC above, they will probably have to pay for this suit, which they will have no say about either.
You should read this it explains pretty well how labels screw bands.

Re:Twitter is pro-Free Speech ? REALLY ??
Oh - you've really nailed a mainstream problem. Right-wing attacks on abortion clinics are a just something you see every... oh wait, I think you have your right-and-left backwards. Why not stop spreading your false narrative, and check out the reality of https://www.thereligionofpeace.com/ - if you're interested in physical attacks.
Wait, wait, are you confused, and think that the various Islamic fundamentalists are on the left?
But yes, attacks on Planned Parenthood are real. And even the non-violent actions are flawed, since they're based on fabrications and misrepresentations.

How do you know the problem is nonexistent if nobody has to show any ID?
The problem very clearly exists. This guy voted 7 times in one election! It's no wonder the GOP is so afraid of election fraud, they know from experience how easy it is.

Stop voting for people who allow this to continue.
However you might feel about people like "The Donald" keep in mind that he has not been bought and paid for by the cable industry. http://www.fiercecable.com/cab... Or the banks http://www.salon.com/2016/05/0... Or even the Russians http://www.nytimes.com/interac... She is just one candidate that you could choose not to support, I'm not suggesting you vote for "The Donald" but at least you're not voting for a criminal. Additionally look at where the vast majority of political contributions flow to and from before you cast your next vote for your local city and state officials. Tired of the government fucking you over? Stop asking them to do so with your votes. And yes, on this site, I expect this comment to be removed completely or down modded into oblivion because diversity of thought is not allowed.

Re: So the tax returns aren't public?
I'm just as suspicious as anybody on the matter. If a real crime was committed, somebody is not doing their job. So the only real mystery is the public silence. I figure at this point, it's the fear of Trump. That's too bad. For the republicans, Johnson is a perfectly viable alternative, and for the democrats there's Stein, though I don't think she's one to combat the sociopathy that permeates most of the world's leadership, plus she's off the deep end in regards to nukes and medicine

Re:so once again...
just like we expect people to have some basic awareness of geography
Since when do we expect that? Plenty of surveys have found that random Americans can't even point out Texas on a map of the US.
http://news.nationalgeographic...
http://www.salon.com/2007/08/3...
According to this Salon article from 2007, only 94% of young Americans could even find America on a map! That means 6% of our young population can't! And 12% can't figure out where Mexico is! That means, if you go to a place where 18-20 year-old people are common, more than 1 in 10 of them don't even know this extremely basic fact of geography regarding our southern neighbor.

Re:Naturally they'll investigate to help HRC.
The whole democrat party has history and ties with Russia and has never seen Russia as a threat to the US until the democrat party was targeted.
Really, let's see your evidence. Or accusations as it were.
"President Barack Obama was caught on camera on Monday assuring outgoing Russian President Dmitry Medvedev that he will have "more flexibility" to deal with contentious issues like missile defense after the U.S. presidential election."
http://www.reuters.com/article...A true statement of the reality in politics, come election time, a lot of empty and useless posturing goes on, making any accomplishments difficult when compromises are necessary.
Any honest president would say the same.
"Gov. Romney
... a few months ago when you were asked what is the biggest geopolitical group facing America, you said Russia, ...And the 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back. Because the Cold War has been over for 20 years. But Governor, when it comes to our foreign policy, you seem to want to import the foreign policies of the 1980s"http://www.salon.com/2012/10/2...
An honest assessment of Romney's dated views. Notice how the current drum being banged by Trump isn't Russia, it's ISIS? Who is at least as deplorable to Moscow as us, as they have a host of Islamic minorities to worry about.
Not to say Russia isn't a concern, they are a major state, but they aren't the Great Enemy of all that is Free and shouldn't be responded to that way.
Of course, you're not getting to the real meat of the expression, which was that Romney was simply borrowing messaging from the Reagan-era, which he was, and trying to use it for the modern day. It was not persuasive. People realize that was a big fat scam.
Sorry, but your evidence is scanty and non-convincing. You'd do better to leave off the accusations. Throwing things at the wall and hoping they stick is a poor tactic.

Don't Worry

Re:So much for rule of law
But he cannot claim he shouldn't be served the treatment for such a decision.
Ah, yes, demanding whisteblowers face the law, while flatly ignoring the lawbreaking revealed by those whisteblowers. The penalty for violating FISA is punishable by up to 5 years and prison, and a $10,000 fine. Given the length and scale of NSA wiretapping, that probably means billions of years in collective prison time, and hundreds of trillions in fines, if FISA was enforced. Funny how you fascists are never demanding those laws be applied to the executive branch and the sort of contractor Snowden worked for.
Snowden could have done it otherwise.
No, he couldn't. Just ask John Kiriakou, who was investigating the CIA for torture and had his investigation shut down by "appropriate channels".

Re:Crooked Hillary
DoJ had already said they would follow FBI's recommendation.
Yes, all part of the agreement achieved between Clintons, Obama and the AGE.
Are you saying FBI Director did not know DoJ had publicly announced this and the ball was in FBI's court?
It only makes sense to discuss, where the ball is, if the match is not fixed... It was fixed. Obama agreed to help Clinton for the sake of their Party and Comey was given a role to play — and played it. "The pikey goes down in the fourth," — said Bricktop in a movie-example of match-fixing...
There is no chance Hillary is getting anywhere close to winning, if he recommended prosecution
I wish this were true, but it is not. You are an example yourself — you would've voted for her even if she were indicted and attended the presidential debates with a tracking device on her ankle. You — and millions of others — would've dismissed all that, while hating on Trump for his preferring good-looking women over ugly ones. Indicted or not, she had a chance.

Re:The mods are chosen algorithmically ...
I'll see your few scholarly research papers, and raise you several violent protests that you have missed. Even leftists have to worry about leftists, as I stated.
Further, I can show that leftist people and groups support the protests.
Well, one way to reply to a post calling out confirmation bias
... is to double down on the confirmation bias. You have a funny term to refer to what would properly be labeled as 'observation of leftists, on social media and in real life'.
Apparently I get to represent all liberals now
Only if you are unable to parse my phrase, "Should I follow suit,
...", which limits the following phrase to a hypothetical question. But I guess such subtlety is wasted on leftists. (See, that is using your inability to read to claim all leftists are ignorant as well.)(or at least the ones you don't like, with that bit of no-true-scotsman mixed in under cover of "I didn't mean everybody").
I'm not allowed to clarify my point that you have such a hard time understanding? Considering my original post was simply comparing attitudes and actions of nondescript left-wingers and right-wingers in the post I replied to. Since I wasn't the one who established the general groups under discussion, I certainly feel I have the right to make that clarification. Sorry if that upsets you.
Let's get back to your original claim, which can be distilled to 'liberals conform more than conservatives'.
Oh, wait a minute. I begin to see your problem. After writing all that above, I realize upon re-reading this line, that you simply are trying to argue the wrong claim. You think it is a discussion of whether one group or the other conforms to the expected norm. But that wasn't Ungrounded Lightning's argument, nor mine. UL said that those on the left "apply social pressure to each other to conform", and in response to (I assume) your question about right-wingers, I voiced my support of UL's argument, and provided an example.
I stand by my claim that leftists do much more to force their views on society, even on other leftists, than rightists do. That has nothing to do with whether right-wingers (AKA conservatives) by their nature want to keep things the way they are (also known as 'to conserve', funny how that is implied in the label 'conservative').
You are arguing the wrong case.

Re:#BlackLivesMatter
Some liberals lie and say they want "reasonable" gun restrictions when their goal is a total ban (except for the elites). It's all about getting the thin edge of the wedge under the door.
Upon seeing her Clinton gun ban enacted in 1994, she said: “If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate of the United States for an outright ban, picking up every one of them . . . ‘Mr. and Mrs. America, turn ‘em all in,’ I would have done it.”
Gun Control Misses Mark: Sen. Feinstein Shoots-off Mouth, Hits Foot

You should be posting on StormFrontSo you're ok with a guy who retweets Mussolini becoming POTUSA, and has strong appeal and support from White Nationalists?
Like Mussolini, Trump is dismissive of democratic institutions. He selfishly guards his image of a self-made outsider who will “dismantle the establishment” in the words of one of his supporters. That this includes cracking down on a free press by toughening libel laws, engaging in the ethnic cleansing of 11 million people (“illegals”), stripping away citizenship of those seen as illegitimate members of the nation (children of the “illegals”), and committing war crimes in the protection of the nation (killing the families of suspected terrorists) only enhances his stature among his supporters. The discrepancy between their love of America and these brutal and undemocratic methods does not bother them one iota. To borrow from Paxton again: “Fascism was an affair of the gut more than of the brain.” For Trump and his supporters, the struggle against “political correctness” in all its forms is more important than the fine print of the Constitution.
-
Re:It's your turn, Mr Assange
Getting numbers wrong that enumerate things is really quite minor.
That's true. I mean, all those articles of the Constitution, who needs to keep them straight? I mean, Chapter 11, 12, 13...what's the difference? Donald Trump is very very smart. "Super genius" in fact. Just ask him.

David Brin's old essay on this
I guess it's time to dig up SF Elder David Brin on this again - in 1999 he wrote an article on Star Wars's twisted setup where rulers are heriditary vs Star Trek's egalitarian approach.
http://www.salon.com/1999/06/1...
Part of this is because Lucas stole a lot from the Japanese, and that's their thing - true heroes and leaders aren't made, they're born. But that doesn't excuse it.

Re:Repost, because the story is not realistic.
Seattle misery: HUGE problems with traffic. New construction makes the traffic worse. Amazon and Microsoft abusing employees. Shockingly slow internet connections.
I've been in Seattle for a lil while. Traffic does suck. The roads here are very poorly planned. Some friends in the DOT contracting business have shared that the companies are milking contracts for all their worth and dumping them (hearsay)
... The internet is getting better. Centurylink adopted a debunked fibre installation in the city and had it up and running at near 1gig speeds just a few months after adoption (about 800mbits is the max I've ever seen while streaming a linux distro in a torrent app) ... It's better than getting your internet from Comcast with their obvious price-fixing and anti-competitive behaviour - there was a slashdot about this not too long ago.Amazon: Worse than Wal-Mart: Amazon's sick brutality and secret history of ruthlessly intimidating workers (February 23, 2014)
Yet, they produce a continuous stream of what we locals call "am-holes"
... their employee-fucking is widely known yet they somehow keep attracting young talent. As the owner of a startup, I find it extremely hard to poach amazon employees. What I offer in freedom doesn't trump their offer of stability. I'm pretty sure they conscript people secretly by paying off their student loans in exchange for longish contracts with gag clauses. Just a hunch. What's really worse than their treatment of their employees is their treatment of the local ecosystems. Their disruption is so profound it turned a major borough of the city into their shitty little playground, and they're moving to other boroughs.Microsoft: Microsoft Is Filled With Abusive Managers And Overworked Employees, Says Tell-All Book (May 23, 2012)

Traffic: Seattle one of the worst U.S. cities for traffic congestion, tied with NYC (March 31, 2015) Quote: "An additional 23 minutes a day spent in traffic may not sound like much, but when it adds up over a year it becomes 89 hours." (Whoever wrote that must be accustomed to Seattle misery. An additional 23 minutes a day spent in traffic sounds HORRIBLE.)
There are ways around the traffic. And it's not waze. You really just have to take specific roundabout routes with less/little traffic and you get there quicker. The main roads are for suburbanites too fucking lazy to take the beautiful trains which head in from pretty much every direction, with huge park & ride lots for commuters. I personally believe the traffic problem is a problem with the personalities of the body politick. They are quite anti-social, fear human contact (in my observation), and take every precaution to not talk to strangers. It's really odd. We 'transplants' call it the "seattle-freeze" - which is something I warn anyone moving to the area about.
Slow internet: Many areas of Seattle have poor internet connections. See the article, These places have the slowest Internet in the country. (June 25, 2015) Quote: "... Seattle

Re:4.5 hours a day? That's really sad.
Where is it that anyone these days has 4.5 hours of free time to sit in front of a television?
I hate to say it, but retirees in Florida certainly do...I've witnessed it first hand after moving there to help my parents take care of my grandmother. From the time their feet hit the ground until it's time for bed, they've got Fox News on. Next door neighbors...Fox News. Barber shop...Fox News. The gym, the bars, the blood donation facility...basically anyplace with a TV. It's all the same, it's non-stop, and it's disturbing. And my experience doesn't seem to be unique:
http://www.salon.com/2014/02/2...
The article of the OP gives a demographic breakdown by age. The 65-and-up crowd watch almost 3x the amount of TV as the 18-24 year olds. A large part of this might be the result of an addiction.

Trump, for example, would have to overthrow two democracies and start two regional wars, just to catch up to Hillary.

The part that drove me nuts was how her supporters were dragging out the fainting couches when ever Bernie would touch her with a feather....while at the same time HRC was rhetorically exhuming the bodies of dead Sandy Hook kids to leave on Bernie's campaign doorstep. Hillbots are as obnoxious (and as right wing) as the Bushbots ever were. Anyway, I doubt Trump is going to be so kind as to not bring up HRC's hypocrisy over private email servers, or mention the fact that at least Brian Williams heard actual gunfire.

Re:This sort of thing is why people like Trump
Trump is a vote for "something different" versus "more of the same." Recall Deez Nuts getting 9% of the vote in the August 19th, 2015 North Carolina presidential poll.
Now... if The Bern runs on the Green Party ticket with Jill Stein, in a 3-way race, he could actually become president. At a minimum, he could accuse Hillary of siphoning votes from him instead of vice versa, if he gets a larger percentage of national votes.

Indeed, a better example of relevancy probably comes from western perspectives about brainwashing in public > schools.
Why look to an outside group that is widely dismissed already, when you have ones here at home pushing their own message? The question is, who is full of bullshit?
PS, don't worry about the Colonies not having representation in the British Parliament, inhabitants of England didn't, even the rotten boroughs weren't eliminated for another few decades and true suffrage was even longer in developing.

Re:Still Not BuyingNo Apparent Reason? Here
All that is true, but there’s a further point worth making: climate change denial is actually much worse than Holocaust denial. Holocaust denial deals with the deaths of millions in the past, which it did nothing to cause, however morally odious it surely is. Global warming denial deals with the deaths of millions in the future, which it helps to cause, by crippling efforts to prevent them. And that’s something much worse, as is reflected in law: It’s not a crime to lie about murders in the past, except to hinder a police investigation, or prosecution; but it is a crime to tell enabling lies about future murders—it’s called conspiracy to commit murder.
I make my “climate change denier” claim for one reason. It’s easy today to teach students to condemn the Holocaust, but it’s much more difficult to teach them how to try to prevent future genocides. There are different kinds of genocides and they don’t repeat themselves; they come to us in different ways. I am not suggesting that the Holocaust is just like climate change. But what I am suggesting is that even though it’s hard to see a genocide – any genocide – coming. The future is hard to predict, but we can see this one coming. This genocide is of our own making, and it will effect everyone, not just one group or country.
This behavior has only encouraged people to use it for just asking about why this evaporation data didn't change prior to 2010.
And publish where? No reputable journal would risk the fight given the climate in science because it's "settled". I've sited far more than just myself, but I suppose actually reading the thread you're responding rather than the first post would be a bit much. -

If you think the US elections are fair, you might read this article: http://www.salon.com/2016/04/0... We may have heard of gerrymandering, but what's happening in the USA, state by state, goes well beyond simple map-redrawing. I thought I was fairly politically literate, but was really shocked when I read this. And it's all apparently legitimate. That is to say it gives the appearance of being legal and it hasn't been challenged on court, that I know of, but it certainly belies the principle of "one person, one vote."

Re:Don't take away everyone's freedom
If Christians or Atheists committed the same number of atrocities, we would all agree with your sarchasm 100%. However, that is not the case. We don't have sleeper cells of atheists and Christians plotting to kill as many innocents as possible.
Is that so? You may want to click here and filter to "Christian Identity" to check your facts, bud. You might want to consider reading up on folks like these guys to see just how incorrect you are.
I will never understand why people like you can't admit the obvious. Instead you want to play games and try to find equivalence between a couple of Colorado crazies and the hundreds (thousands?) of attacks done by Muslims. Good luck trying to win hearts and minds with that approach. People aren't as stupid as you think they are.
Apparently, you may just be as stupid as I think you are. So this is a numbers game for you then? So by your rationale, if the "couple of crazies" had been more successful in their campaigns of terror, then it'd be the same, but because they cocked it up and didn't score enough kills, it's not the same thing? Seriously?
You really believe that there is no significant violence done in the name of Christianity?
If you're still incensed at these facts because it was the actions of a few "crazies" who are not representative of the overall religion, then CONGRATULATIONS!! You just learned something! You just learned EXACTLY my point. If YOU believe that the actions of these ISIS idiots are representative of Islam, then you're clearly not understanding how things work.....or you're desperately trying to make yourself feel better about Christianity for some reason......which probably means you consider yourself a Christian and therefore better than others. -
Re:Extraordinary rendition
Are you quite sure about that?
