Original Game Boy and Samsung SCH-8500I had the original Game Boy (purchased new for Christmas 1990) for 8 years. It survived numerous drops onto the floor and at least 2 bettery leaks (I lost it, but for all I know it still works today).
My other piece of durable tech is the Samsung SCH-8500 cellular phone (purchased December 2000) and I still use it. It's survived countless drops onto concrete and pavement, drops into puddles (and a toilet), being slept on, and a bad battery. I have yet to find another phone that even looks as durable yet, so I'm not replacing it anytime soon.

Re:*sigh*The size when watching a movie in widescreen format is limited not by the diagonal size but the horizontal size. For instance, a 2.35:1 movie (say, Tombstone) will be letterboxed on either TV. Given that, if both TVs are displaying the same signal at the same resolution, and at the same size, then what is the advantage of the widescreen? I'm not saying I don't want one, in the same way I want a Powerbook and Palm Tungsten. I'm saying that the value isn't there, and not only that, that the value is lower for 4:3 signals. All of that being said, if money were no object then I would have chosen this one.
Why? Naturally: for geek duels (much like this one
:P).The ram does not often use his horns for actual combat, only for intimidation.
-
Re:Dead wrong
With all due respect, the meat of the debate I presented was that my 4:3 television is capable of displaying 1080i widescreen displays. The infamous "Black Bars" of letterboxing are irrelevant if the viewing area of the widescreen signal is the same size and same resolution is the same as the "superior" widescreen display. Given that, the best televisions are undeniably widescreen. At the lower end, however, the better values and logical choices are 4:3.
If I had an unlimited budget, my tone would likely be different. The chief issue I had with the poster of the comment I replied to was that he called me and my ilk morons and offered reasons that were patently incorrect.

I just paid $30 for 128 MB MS. Show me a better price for CF or SD/MMC.
not to mention has various confusing variations (e.g. magic gate)
You mean 2? Magic gate, non-Magic gate? Boy, that is confusing.
and is still proprietary
"Proprietary", eh? Guess what? All of the major formats are proprietary. Want to sell a CF device? You can if you ante up to the CF org. Sony has released quite a few specifications (http://www.memorystick.org/topics/eng/aboutms/for mat.html).
You might find prices on Amazon.com come close to CF or SD/MMC but I can walk into any camera shop and be offered compact flash cards by 3 or 4 manufactures where I'd be lucky if could find 2 for memory stick.
I count 6 manufacturers of Memory Stick: Lexar, SanDisk, Sony, I-O Data, Apacer Tech.

Can't Hack it...
I'm sure someone will figure a way to replace the internal drive with a larger one, as they did the first TiVo's.
Samsung is not a hacker-friendly corporation like TiVo. If anything you'd get slapped with DMCA suit if you "upgrade" the drive.
Also, I don't think this is a consumer-grade HDD. There is no mention of the type in the official press release, and arising out of the fact that none of the current HDD mfg's make anything near 1.5gb capacity drives, I'm willing to guess: this is a proprietary model. -
Re:Now if only they were as reliable...Well, I hate to be a pain but, you get what you build for. From the samsung website the reliability data doesn't look that bad.
Non-recoverable Read Error : 1 sector in 10 14 bits
MTBF 500,000 POH
Start/Stop Cycles (Ambient) 50,000
Component Design Life 5 years
So, a 5 disk RAID 4 array of these drives will hav a fatal disk failure every 11 years? That's what RAID is for, putting that many eggs in a non-redundant basket is your own fault.

2. Coca-Cola's recipe
3. Electronics manufacturers
4. I agree, everything *is* freeAs if courtrooms were closed source...no, they're open, exception to the Federal Government (theives at large locking their own doors to hide their shameful actions).
As if food were closed source...no, we are given the basic ingredients list upon request: in paper or plastic bag, packaged to go. And McDonalds has proved they are not cooking their products in lard as of yesterday: gosh my mouth is sticky.
As if software were closed source...no, the machine code is there and nobody can pattent digital logic 1 and digital logic 0. But wait, here come the DMCA to prove that even you can be told what you can and can't do with the click of a mouse.
As if Electronics manufacturers don't release specifications and parts lists...no, you buy the end-product and you sacrificially break-open your documented(in progress) parts list.
Everything should be free...no, wait, someone dedicated themselves to the labor already; it's payed-for. In essence, it is free
:pHow many people benefited from the construction of planet Earth? Is planet Earth open-source and does planet Earth have an Uber Entity? Is Planet Earth's Uber Entity enforcing patents? (Yes) Is planet Earth's Uber Entity named "GOD"? (No) So, what is preventing everything from being free (not as in beer)? Patents, and the entities that enforce them (DMCA), are what continually beat-down the freedom of living in a non-patented world.

Re:Not even that great...Actually, Dell's been shipping 1600x1200 Laptops for over two years now. I got mine back in October of 2000.
You're correct about one thing though... You can't go back to a laptop with a crappy screen once you've become accustomed to staring at these beauties.
I'm finally getting around to looking at LCDs for my desktop machines. I've got my eye on the Samsung Syncmaster 191t. I saw it while at Best Buy last weekend, and it was stunning. It's only 1280x1024, but the image quality doesn't lie. Maybe not as sharp as my laptop, but it's by far the best looking desktop LCD panel I've yet seen.
-
Porsche can't even do monitors
Have a look at Samsungs' 17" TFT (the 171P). The designer insisted on two 1.5m cables for VGA and DVI fixed to the device "for design reasons", at least that's what I was told when I asked. That's one argument against, huh?
So what do you think they'll do to a whole laptop?

Gaming with a LCD screenHmmmm - LCD vs CRT - the first holy war of 2003!!
:)I just bought a Samsung 172T (read an early glowing review). It's the first LCD screen I've owned, although I've used plenty before; I have a laptop for work.
Just like plenty of comments from this thread from yesterday, plenty of non-LCD-owning people here seem to have a strong opinion on the matter
:)I couldn't be happier with my new screen. At the stated response rate of 25ms, I have an effective screen refresh rate of 40 updates a second, ie. faster than my eye can detect. The monitor can handle being fed 72Hz at 1280x1024 (native res), which is better than my old Acer 77c 17" could manage. I've always played games with v-sync switched on to prevent tearing in the past (for the uninitiated, v-sync means the card sends the same number of frames per second as the screen refresh rate, so that monitor doesn't try to display parts of two frames at once and cause visible tearing). The long and the short of all this is that the screen is happily updating as fast as my eyes and brain need it to. As a bonus:
- I have a "true" 17" viewable monitor (equiv. to a 19" CRT)
- a screen that doesn't hurt to look at for day-long gaming sessions
- I can lift it with two fingers! ie it's portable for LANs
- It chews far less power than a CRT
- it gives off far less HEAT than a CRT - a cool room makes for a cooler PC
- it looks way cooler than any CRT on the planet
- I can use a smaller desk, or fit more on my existing desk
- My girlfriend thinks I'm cooler for owning it
:)
Sure - many gamers won't get an LCD because on paper they doesn't match current CRT capabilities. But good ones come close enough.

Re:Stay away from...
I reccomend the Samsung Yepp for your needs. Small as all hell with 64 Megs of ram.
It may come to replace my current Rio 500 soon.
There's also an under-publicized 128 meg version I found on pricewatch here. -
Re:You may have been sarcastic
Personally, the idea of NOT having a $200+ mp3 player is laughable.
I tend to be outside a lot - yard work and exercise (running, stadium stairs, etc). A CD based mp3 player is too large and bulky for what I want. But a small mp3 player - perfect! I've got a samsung player, have had it for 6 months, and have found it perfect for my needs.

Re:DDR-ii
Here's a spec sheet from Samsung (this is for PC memory though - the 500Mhz variety I was refering to is for graphics cards). I quote: "200 MHz fCK for 400Mb/sec/pin & 267MHz fCK for 533Mb/sec/pin". That DDRII is quad pumped is a very wide spread misconception. It might have come from the increase in minimum burst from 2 to 4, or someone said something about the memory array being multiplexed by four but the bus by two. I don't know, but anyway - Double Data Rate II memory still "only" has double the data rate of the clock frequency.
Regards / ushac -
Re:alpha still lives?
Where does this all leave Samsung in this whole mess?
Will they continue the Alpha line or will this be where it ends? -
haven't you seen the Palm based phones?
such as Samsung SPH-I300? A pointer device could be useful to keep all those fingerprints off the touch screen
:-) -
Re:Please please, give me a smaller phone.
I've got your small phone... RIGHT HERE!
-
Re:IBM Chipset for which CPU? (None)
- ...what CPU does the chipset support...
The IBM-developed DDR-II chipset in question here is simply a memory controller, i.e. a small (but important) part of the Northbridge in what you're calling a chipset. -
Re:Cost Question
Why is this such a popular misconception? Having 128KB L2 cache doesn't make it a Celeron.
The misconception comes from the fact that it's the same damn die! In fact, the Celeron and the PIII were the same die as well, the Celeron just had 128KB of it's cache disabled. The processor used in the XBox was also from the same die, and also had 128KB of it's cache disabled, however they disabled the cache in such a way so that it was still 8-way set associative.
Ohh, and 8-way vs. 4-way set associative typically makes about 1% difference in performance. The associativity of a cache is a matter of diminishing returns, and going much beyond 2 or 4 way doesn't give you much. Just how often do you expect that you'll need more then 4 chunks of 32-bytes at exact 256KB intervals but not the chunks of memory right beside them? It's pretty rare. I know that Anand made a little claim of a 10% performance increase, but he probably couldn't even explain what set associtivity is, let alone make an argument as to why it would make a 10% performance difference.
You're probably correct about TSMC's yeilds improving, but do you think that nVidia paid TSMC for the bad dies in the first place? Nope. TSMC eats the loss when they've got poor yeilds, and reaps the profits when they have good yeilds. At best they're only going to pass on a small percentage of the saving to nVidia, who in turn are probably only going to pass on a small percentage of their savings to Microsoft.
Next correction? Oh yeah, the memory. The X-Box uses Samsung K4D263238M-QC50 chips, although it could probably use some other identical chips from other manufacturers. You can find info about this chip from Samsung's website. Here's the link. As you can see, it's DDR memory rated for 200MHz, for 400MHz effective performance. I suppose it's not really "DDR400", and it's certainly not "PC4200" memory, however it IS 200/400MHz DDR.

Be aware of 3G networks coming soonI had been shopping for a PDA/phone a few months ago, and looked at the Samsung I300 and Kyocera QCP-6035, both of which are nice phones available for CDMA networks (I'm on Sprint and don't really see a new handset as a compelling reason to switch).
However I decided to wait for now for two reasons. One is that Handspring recently announced that they will be supporting CDMA (logical considering Qualcomm just invested $10 Million in them). Thus I expect a CDMA Treo will come out some time this year.
The other reason I am waiting is that Sprint PCS is about to roll out their new 3G Network this summer. Among other things, this will offer data speeds up to 10 times faster than the current network can. In fact, Wired is running a story today on the demo roadshow that Sprint is running right now to show off applications of their new network.
Sprint isn't showing any new handsets for it yet, but one will presume they are forthcoming. In fact, I'm guessing thats why the price on the QCP-6035 has dropped so preciptously (from like $300 to $100 or so) in the last couple of months---I'm guessing Kyocera has a successor model waiting in the wings.
Hence I wait.

Mainstream?
The onscreen text-area makes so much sense it surprises me that more people haven't done it (yes Handera, but they aren't as mainstream as Palm, Sony, and Handspring).
I guess Samsung doesn't count either then. -
Re:vs. other options?
not your only option, there's always Samsung's SPH-I300
but, it's a 1st generation device [the treo's a 1st generation device too, if you don't count the vizorphone], and the Kyocera's a 2nd generation Qualcomm [Kyocera purchased Qualcomm's wireless division]. So many good design decisions come from pdq-800/1900 customer input/experience..

Re:vs. other options?
what about the samsung I300?
This thing is smaller and lighter than the QCP-6035, it's in color, and the battery life is great. Plus, it comes with an EXTRA battery.
I've had one since november and can't see myself surviving without one now. -
We already have the product...
... the price will drop by 2009.

Re:Looks great?
...I think that this model from Samsung looks great.I tend to agree, and the specs are more or less what I want in a PDA with integrated phone. I got excited enough about it to start digging in my wallet for my credit card, then I checked and found that none of the UK networks support it. How very annoying...

Looks great?
Hmmm...Maybe it's just me, but I don't think it looks that great. I think it looks like crap. As far as PDA/phone combos go, I think that this model from Samsung looks great. Plus, it's got the useable size and shape necessary for both PDA and phone use, unlike the new blackberry.

Re:Kyocera??
The Samsung I300 trounces both, and manages to do so without being quite so fugly.

Potential customer...
I have been looking to buy a 15" LCD in the near future. I had heard good things about the Samsung but I was disappointed to hear that they refused to provide Tom with a unit.
After looking around their web pages for about ten minutes, I finally was able to find an email address to express my displeasure.
Contact Samsung's PR department.
I believe that Samsung makes the highly regarded Apple Studio monitors, as well.
One question I have (as I read through Tom's article) is why a DVI connection will put you back about $100 more than a similar VGA-only LCD. -
64MB big? You can already buy 128MB and 256MB unit
Samsung has unveiled a gigabit flash (128MB) that, unlike this matrix part, is erasable. If that's not enough, you can buy a
2 gigabit flash stack (256 MB) from irvine sensors.
True, these are packaging techniques for more density, and aren't as cool as putting more memory on one die, but don't overlook them: they offer about the same densities. Hopefully, we can eventually combine both techniques, for even greater densities. -
Re:Athlon vs. Alpha
The other way around is something that is done by Samsung. They use the AMD 760 and 750 chipset on boards for Alpha CPUs. Samsung Alpha Boards

Samsung Yepp
I would highly recommend the Samsung Yepp. I purchased one a few weeks ago and it has been working nicely. It comes with 64 mb of built in ram, plus a SmartMedia expansion slot. In addition, it has an FM radio tuner. A good place to buy it is at CompUSA.

What's the best Palm Phone?
My wife has become quite the geekess. Last month she decided the ethernet cable in her laptop bag was the wrong size, so she got out our spool of Cat5e and crimped a new one. Damn, I love her.
Anyways, she's tired of carrying her phone and her Palm and her pager. So we found the Treo, SmartPhone, and I300. Anyone have hands-on tales about them?
Do any of them really work as well as the separate components do? I've heard some of them are like a complete Palm with a crappy phone strapped on, while others are a decent phone with a weak PDA wedged inside. And do any of them have good synergy across the features? -
Samsung needs to get its act together

don't get excited...
okay, let's review...
The Inquirer has a story posted March 31, 2001 about the UP1500. it says the product is "is intended to arrive in July". it is now November.
these mailing list posts (including some by yours truly), show that the Samsung page in question, has been around since at least April 2001 and so has a page which has listed the UP1500 as "Under Development" ever since.
now, i'm no expert, but i think it is fairly safe to call this vaporware. maybe the motherboard will come out at some point, but for right now, it's silly to treat it as news.
(i will refrain from making commentary about how certain news *cough* organizations should check their sources before posting stories. oops! i just did.) -

Samsung Goodness
I'm coming to have a lot of respect for Samsung lately, what with their flat panels with integrated TV tuners, HDTV ready flat panels, their nice cheap 770 TFT (of which I have several tied together with a Matrox G200MMS card), their Yepp MP3 player (of which I have one)(it even plays my cdex/lame encoded vbr mp3s), and a host of other cool products, not to mention a nice website. (menu: who we are, what we sell, where we are. Just what we need to know.)
This Alpha board is another in their seemingly endless line of cheap but good products, not cutting edge like IBM or Sony, but taking existing technology and getting it to the masses at a reasonable price and quality.

Re:Woah... woah... waitasec... back up. NUON?The N501 has a flashable ROM (Samsung already issued an upgrade here ), CD-R/RW, MP3 and VCD capabilities, along with a boatload of NUON special effects and features like the VLM (150+ effects of beat-sensitive graphics that accompany audio CD and MP3 playback), 15-20x zoom depending on the player which is filtered by the NUON processor for a high-quality image. On-the-fly changes to DVD player settings, frame-by-frame strobe of images, on-screen thumbnails of multiple angles, etc...not to mention the gaming aspect of NUON.
Check out my URL above for a ton of info on NUON, if you're interested in further research.

Re:Availability of a Nuon player
The latest and best date we know for a european release of NUON is end of november this year for the Samsung N505. The N705 is to follow in spring next year.
Although please note that these dates are not official yet - samsung are unusually secretive about their new releases. There is a spec sheet for the N705 at Samsung[Samsungelectronics.com].
Cheers

Very cool phone
If the Samsung SPH-N300 is anything like the SPH-I300 it will be a very cool phone/pda/gps device.

PDA/Phone offerings
I noticed that the Samsung SPH-I300 (review) hadn't been linked here yet. It blows away the Kyocera QCP 6035 (review) in my mind, but it will run on Sprint's network. The Kyocera is only on Verizon's network in my area (Washington DC.) Meanwhile, I haven't seen anything about the Magcom Mobile Phone here in the US.

Surely amazing...
Wow... quite amazing what Samsung achieves...
From that Samsung site: Resolution(Max.) 31920 X 1200 @60Hz
Well I'd better go get one...

IrDAHey,
Many of the more expensive phones have built-in infra-red modems; these are 'data enabled' phones. You often have to call the mobile provider to get it activated. In the UK, I'm on an 'Orange' plan with 180 minutes a month and a Motorola L7089 phone. I called the provider, Orange, and got the data features enabled (Details are probably in the manual) and now can point it at my laptop and get on the internet, like a normal modem.
If you have a pre-pay plan, or one of the cheaper ones (or a bastard provider), you might not be able to get the data features enabled on your phone, but if you are on a contract and have a data-enabled phone, you probably can; Phone them and ask about it.
If your PDA has infra-red stuff on it, and has software availiable for web browsing and internet access, it should just be a case of enabling infra-red, pointing the two together and doing some settings. Psion has a nice site at mobile.psion.com; you'd be interested in This page I expect.
Check with your palmtop's manufacturer and phone manufacturer. Actually, don't: I've done it for you. Look here for handspring-related details:
Q. Can my Visor communicate with IR-equipped phones or other IrDA devices?
A. Yes. Visor Platinum and Visor Prism have built-in support for establishing IR communication with IrDA devices. For Visor and Visor Deluxe, there are two simple steps to take. [snip]
Short story, you need a (free) update, and you need a program. There are links on the page.
The Samsung site seems very unclear. this page says
Both SCH-3500 and SCH-850 are internet access available and have no speaker phone.
Aha, manuals online... You can get one for the SCH-3500 on Sprint here and for STA here.
I only have a dial-up connection, so I won't bother downloading either, but I'd have a look if I were you.
Just helpin' things along.

How about one of these?
I ran across one of these mobile phones from Samsung.
The phone comes with a built-in mp3-player and 32M of storage. The storage can be used for other data too. It connects to the PC thru the lpt port and the software seem windoze only :(
Has anyone seen a better product with the same concept yet? (USB+multiplatform drivers etc..) This is probably one of the next steps in the mobile phone industry..

Re:Samsung
Yes, I like the Samsung SyncMaster 770TFT as well (and am using it now!), but the poster asked for;
- 1600×1200 resolution; the Samsung does 1280×1024.
- 20" diagonal; the Samsung is 17".
- Digital input; the Samsung has standard SVGA cables.
- Square pixels; YES! The Samsung has it.
So it doesn't really fit the bill, does it?
I think the poster need the SyncMaster 1100p+. It has
- 21"(20.0" viewable)
- 0.21mm(H) dot pitch
- 1800x1440@75Hz Maximum Resolution
- Recommended Mode 1600 x 1200 / 85Hz
but it is still a standard 15-pin connector. A USB option is apparently available, but I'm guessing (does anybody know?) that it involves a converter
:-)Unfortunately I have no experiences with this monitor, but if somebody would lend me a sample.....
