ScottEvest
On my keychain I have, um, keys. As few as possible. In pants pockets I generally have a wallet, a lockblade knife, a small leatherman tool (no blade - TSA OK), handkerchief and always a flashlight (Surefire Backup). My phone is always with me somewhere.
But I am almost always wearing my ScottEvest in which I generally have an Ironkey plus a few non-secure USB drives, pocket notebook, rarely used magnifier glasses and magnifier card, photography grey-card, parking access key, pens (rollerball, retractable mid and small size sharpies and lens-cleaning pen), glasses cleaning cloth, spare camera battery, spare flashlight batteries, dental floss, trash-bag (emergency raincoat, camera cover or even to collect trash on hikes), spare cash, earplugs, business cards, infrared-camera camera attachment and so on.
Sometimes there is also a pocket first-aid kit. Mothers are always surprised when it's the guy who is actually prepared when their kid gets a "boo boo."
Often there is a desktop tripod, tele-extender or other photo accessories in one pocket or another and more often than not a DSLR slung across the shoulder.

I call it my utility harness
I highly recommend you check out Scottevest. I recently purchased the Travel Vest, a light-weight vest riddled with internal pockets. I would never have considered myself a vest-man before then, but it perfectly filled my needs when I was looking for a similar product. It is internally balanced and well structured so that large items like tablets don't poke out and can comfortably and discretely hold a lot of bulk and weight. I walk around with over a pound of kit (tablet, phone, wallet, tools, etc) without looking like I am carrying anything. It looks nice (I trust my friends to make me very aware when my fashion sense flounders) and it matches almost all of my clothes, so I can wear it almost everywhere, everyday. It sure beats keeping all that junk in my pants.
It really sounds like exactly what you are looking for and I have never been more satisfied with a piece of clothing. If you aren't fond of vests, they have other items designed to conveniently carry loads of junk, but I wanted something I wouldn't need to wash everyday and could take off when I was just chilling at home. They are kind of pricey also, but they have regular sales. I waited for the one I wanted to come on sale and got over 50% off. Just saying. -
Scottevest jacket w/ "iPad-Pocket"
It's the only viable solution I've seen so far:
I've been wanting to get one for months, but TBH I'm a bit afraid it'll cost me twice as much here in Germany (with shipping and taxes)...
-
Re:Not recommended.
A quick search around dug up this company http://www.scottevest.com/v3_store/subindex_mens.shtml and their range of clothing (male assumed) with extra pockets. It seems only a matter of time that most manufacturers will start to add in a phablet pocket somewhere, it makes a lot more sense than a holster.
-
Briefcase is too obvious
Maybe carry a lot of your stuff on you or hidden. Like these clothes with multitudes of pockets. http://www.scottevest.com/

Re:Nice, but small pockets is a concern.
Looks like the main front pockets can hold a 6x9" notepad comfortably so it seems to be good size-wise. I usually wear a hoodie underneath my overcoat in the winter so this seems perfect for me.
Also, is this item similar to your case mod? I was thinking of picking one up to attach to a notepad. If you have a cheaper or easier method I'd be interested in trying it.

Wait for what?
Solar laptop solutions are sold by many companies already. You can get it as a foldable panel, panels on laptop bags, panels that can be glued to the back of the screen (probably suboptimal), and even a solar jacket
They're available in all sorts, from cheap ones that can only slowly charge the battery (though they seem to be able to provide part of the required power while the laptop is on, extending the battery's life), to more expensive ones that produce enough power to keep the laptop on, assuming favorable light levels of course. -
Re:I'll waitI'm sure my tailor could sew a pocket into my pants that's big enough to hold my Dell D420 laptop, too, but that doesn't make it a good idea. You don't need a tailor for that, Scottevest (http://www.scottevest.com/) has a jacket with all you need
:). Even normal "big" gadgets don't bulge your pockets, but it even has a 15"laptop-sized backpocket in the "TACTICAL 4.0 Jacket". -
Re:That's a crying shame...
Sounds like you need one of these.
-
Re:Yes please
Move the laptop to your jacket pocket (what, you don't have a Scott eVest?), use a wrist keyboard (chording or not) or a HandiKey Twiddler and you're headed in the right direction.
-
Re:Need ultra-thin "holster" caseYou could try the ScottEvest
It can hold just about anything and you can even get solor panels for your back to recharge.
But there is this little disclaimer at the bottom of the page:* Although most laptops will fit in the back pocket of your SeV, we don't recommend using it in lieu of a laptop bag. Sitting on your laptop is not comfortable nor good for your laptop. But it will surely work for short distances and especially for some of today's lightweight sublaptops.

Re:What ya need is...MORE POCKETS!!!!
I think that this is what Technology Enabled Clothing is attempting to do- I hope their 4.0 version is better than the 2.0 version, I don't fit in the seats on the train due to all the stuff in my pockets....
-
ScottEVestI can't believe no one has mentioned this yet.
Up to 52 hidden pockets and allowances for a personal area network!
It may not be the most stylish coat in the world, but well, it's geeky and it will keep you warm in the winter.
-
Re:Why choose?
It's a lot of gear so I obviously can't take it all everywhere
This is what the ScotteVest was invented for =) -
Re:Dilemma
Why not get a solar-powered jacket instead!!!

ScotteVest
Scottevest (here) is an interesting company, making technical garments. I own their basic vest, and love it dearly, but the Solar Finetex Jacket (look here) is a great product, already set up for charging, and with the system of internal conduits, you can run wires without having them hang off you. Check it out; I highly recommend it.

Re:Carrying all that?
That gets annoying if i need to change pants or my jacket.
What sort of pansy changes his pants more often than once a month? Be a real man, for once. And by real man, I mean a real stinky man. =)
BTW, jokes aside, is your jacket one of these? (Hey, it looks like they're having a sale on pants, too. Yay! I can start changing my pants once a week!=) -
Re:No Apple FM..
Did you see the Swis Army Knife flash memory card? No, I'm not kidding.
Yes, I did, and considered buying one as an xmas gift for my brother-in-law, who is even a bigger geek than I am.
However, I discovered he already has one. Instead, I bought him a jacket from SCOTTEVEST, so he could more easily carry around all the gadgets. I'm absolutely sure that even if there was a single universal gadget which really did everything, that Carl would still own a number of gadgets in addition, and that he'd carry as many as possible with him at all times. -
Finally a good use for propeller beanies!
I can just see the next version of the SCOTTEVEST with turbines on the hood, combined with the solar epaulettes... perhaps voltaic electrodes in boots for when trudging through salt marsh?
-
Re:Why?
Or, you can be uber geek and have this along with you. Probably too hot and bulky for a safari though and quite over-the-top expensive.

Re:Missing option: Refuse because of the trailers.
I wouldn't mind the trailers, per se, but the last movie I saw was AvP, and it had been a year and a half since the previous time I'd gone into a theater. 3 things stuck out at me:
1. The 'downloading movies is a crime' signs all over the theater. WTF? I just spent $7.50 to get into the movie, and you're preaching at us not to steal. Right.....and this was an afternoon matinee.
2. 22 minutes of trailers. !!!!!!!!!!!!! That is just flat out insane. Without excuse. Commericals commercials and more commercials. There's absolutely no excuse for it.
3. I made the mistake of not eating luch before I went. No big deal, just grab popcorn and a soda. I know it'll hurt, but I haven't been in a while....go up, toss a $5 bill on the counter, and place my order. They bring back the soda and popcorn, then tell me that I'm $3 short.
WHAT. $5 not only won't cover popcorn and a soda anymore, but THE PRICE OF THE TICKET WON'T EITHER. That's right, popcorn and soda now cost more than seeing the movie itself. Of course it's summertime, so I can't get away with wearing my coat and bringing in whatever I want...it's just wrong.
The theater is basically a scam to make you a captive audience for commercials and overpriced goods. Sad that's it has degraded so far. :( -
I no longer care
My government officials are hell bent on making me a criminal then so be it.
Every direction I turn I see something that I do in my daily life that uses technology to make things more fun or convienient are put up as "evil" and neede to be made illegal. I give up, I'll be happy to live in the underground as a criminal. These ultra rich senators and represenatives have no clue as to what the real world is and do not give a rat's ass about one single citizen.
unless a mobilization of the american public to scream loud and clear to these out-of-touch fools in the government our desires nothing will change and everyting will get worse.
I strongly suggest that every technically adept person learn how to do things secretly and quietly. Making sure their technology is hidden from the police because what you do today will become illegal and more than likely have a harsher punishment than cold-blooded murder.
I laugh when people sell things like this to conceal what they are carrying. But it looks like it will be required in the future to listen to music or carry anything technological that is not "approved".
certianly makes you disgusted. men like Senator Hatch in congress are like people stopping to piss on the constitution... they are an embarassment and abomination to what america was.

Smart Costumes
DailyWireless has more on Wearable Communicating Costumes and the Adidas Hot Shoe.
"Smart clothing" and wearable computing developers include:
- France Telecom invented a flexible fiber optic system that can be embedded in clothes. Static or animated graphics can be displayed.
- Chipmaker Infineon has created a packaging technology that allows circuitry to be woven into ordinary fabrics, which can then be normally washed or even dry-cleaned. The company created a prototype jacket with an embedded MP3 player.
- Orang-Otang Computers has patented designs for gadgets like a phone that fits under a shirt sleeve, a wrist-mounted audio recorder, a wearable laptop and a wearable camera.
- California's Charmed Technology, an MIT Media Lab spin-off, is poised to be a world leader in affordable, wearable Internet products. Their CharmBadge is designed for aiding the communication and networking.
- Fossil, best known for trendy watches, has created wrist devices that exchange information with handheld computers and Microsoft's Spot.
- The Smart Shirt System uses biological sensors to monitor heart rates or the locations of those wearing the technology, says Jeffrey Wolf, CEO of Sensatex Inc.
- Tactex Controls uses "smart fabric" for a touch-sensitive MIDI controller.
- Zigbee-equipped sneakers might record speed, body telemetry and even external sensors.
- Orientation, communications and geographic positioning electronics can all be incorporated into outdoor clothing. Heat can be transferred through conducting fibres to colder areas of the body
- The SCOTTeVEST shows the way traditional garments may be altered to meet the demanding needs of spies and undercover agents.

If you're a techno-geek
Then you must get technology enabled clothing. Check out www.scottevest.com.
I found this throug a friend of mine in the secret service. The best way to carry technology safely is to disguise the fact that you're carrying it. -
Re:Feelings
I bought a Scott e-Vest jacket. I can keep my laptop, mp3 player, PDA, a water bottle, digital camera, as well as assorted cables and other items in my pockets without any noticable bulges in the jacket. As a benefit, the jacket does a great job of distributing the weight evenly so my neck and shoulders do not get sore.

Gadget coat
Take a look at the stuff at ScottEVest. If he's a gadget geek (aren't we all) he's gotta have one of these.

Re:I had a SCOTTeVEST ...
We don't expect to lower prices of Version 3.0 anytime soon. Also, there are no plans for Version 4.0 until 2005. If you purchase one, you can return it if you don't like it. Scott Jordan, SCOTTeVEST

Re:I had a SCOTTeVEST ...
We take great pride in the quality of our products and fully guaranty them. If you had a problem, all you have to do is call/email us, and we will replace or repair your jacket, at no charge. We have NEVER had any issues brought to our attention about the magnets, ever. Please call us on Monday to arrange for a repair/replacement. Scott Jordan, Pressident SCOTTeVEST

Re:Try and get that through airport security.
It is much easier to travel with the SCOTTeVEST. All you have to do is put it through the xray with gadgets in it. No longer do you have to put your devices in the little buckets. I don't believe the addition of a solar panel will change that. Scott Jordan, President SCOTTeVEST

Re:Homeland Security will love this one.
Actually, the SCOTTeVEST makes going through security much easier. All you have to do is place the jacket with gadgets, etc. loaded, through the xray. No longer do you have to unload all your devices. This has been tested by thousands of users. I don't believe the addition of the solar panels will change that. Scott Jordan, President SCOTTeVEST

Patent Pending....
....on the design of the epaulet on the jacket's shoulder. I bet noone has _ever_ thought of putting a strap of material on the shoulder of a jacket before.
Maybe the fact that the epaulet is located a couple of inches further forward than it would normally be will be enough to grant the patent.

And for the moms who always buy clothes..
Get me one of these

Man Purse... ok, you can stop laughing now...I'm telling you, it's a geat idea. I'm currently looking into getting some sort of bag to carry around with me most of the time. Call it a "man purse", "man bag", messenger bag, briefcase, satchel, whatever... I just want to keep my stuff in it.
Some things I've come across:
- Timbuk2: Supposedly top quality custom made bike messenger bags that come in four sizes (S,M,L,XL). They have a newer Shortcut bag that looks particularly interesting. Certainly not cheap.
- Manhattan Portage: These seem a little too hip and trendy for me, but they are certainly popular with the NYC crowd... especially the Model 1414 and various DJ bags. Not horribly priced, but not cheap.
- Maxpedition: I don't know much about this place. There are some people that recommend their Thermite Versipacks.
- e-Holster: Heh. No.
- SCOTTeVEST: Some people actually say these are cool. But it doesn't meet my design criteria of not wanting to wear a vest/jacket/etc all the time. What about summer?!
- Kelty supposedly has some smaller bags that people have used as well.
BTW, if anyone else has a bag that they are currently using, please share some info!

Re:Ranges Bluetooth vs. MI
That's why you have a repeater/hub/switch attached to your chest.
Creating a PAN, but since this PAN is wireless we'll get WPAN, and then we'll really need IPv6....
Or we could NAT ourselves from ourselves, and segment me from you.... -
eVest
While it's not explicitly "wearable computing", the Scott eVest line of jackets is an interesting solution to our existing gadget carrying hell.
It's not easy to carry a PDA, Ipod & cell without resorting to cargo pants every day. Plus, while those Docker mobile pants have a lot of pockets, it really gets heavy.
I lust for one of those jackets, but I won't buy one until I see it in person- they are much too expensive to be buying over the net, sight unseen. -
Re:Misinformation
And a comparison to a PDA? WTF? can you stick the laptop in your jacket or pant pocket? NO!
You can if you have one of these :). Just make sure you don't sitdown with a lot of force while storing a laptop in the back pocket. -
Is this the same as eVest plus more pockets
Reminds me of Scott's eVest

Re:iPod and PalmGet yourself a ScotteVest
I have had one for about 2 months now and I love it (v 2.0). Typically I have my phone, access card, keys, wallet, PocketPC and my mini-disc man all happily in the jacket and without the devices showing to much on the outside.
As for the iPod
... I am going to stick with my Mini-disc man for now. My iPaq should see me right for a while ... now I just have to kill a few people so I can buy myself a Powerbook :) -
Re:Functionality
Sure, here's a few pockets. If you get one I wanna know if its full of shit.

Broken Link
The link to the vest in the articler seems to be broken, here is the real link, and here is the RealPlayer low bandwidth and high bandwidth infomercials. It actually looks okay, although at $159 I don't think I want one, especially as they don't seem to come in Small (and yes guys, Geeks come in Small too!).

My mind does not wander to the eternal hunting fields of gizmos. It's more like the ultimate professional wear for your typical "special deal" watch salesman. Open the vest and display your goods. Sir, how about this nice Visor, only 29.90? This Rolex is only 129.50. No, my gold rings and chains are NOT for sale.
