Firefly
the Firefly http://www.fireflyfans.net/main.asp series were a blast, and the movie Serenity http://www.serenitymovie.com/ is a must be seen too! Especially since it took a different turn: no aliens, just humans in space! Nice thought pattern as it reintroduces the frontier and outlaws in space!

I don't get it,
what's the big deal about desktops. I'm useing FVWM2 everywhere with a small panel with pager, clock and net/temp meter. Everything else is in the menu, which comes up if I click on a free space (there's always free space, or you can just add more panels). I mean what's the point of having a nice picture of SMG as the background if I can't see her
:)Give your eyes a good time, check out Joss Whedon's Serenity http://www.serenitymovie.com/.

Join the Browncoats, see Serenity
...and maybe, just maybe we'll see more of Firefly than the first 1/2 season.
Browncoats: http://browncoats.serenitymovie.com/serenity/
It was a great show that Fox in its short-sightedness cancelled way WAY too early to tell if its was going to be a hit or not. I have the DVDs and share them with as many people as I can in hopes that they will see the quality of the writing and acting and get hooked. Now that the show has been picked up for broadcast in the 'states again this should help the word get out.
BSG is being called the best sci-fi on TV right now, and Firefly (IMHO) was the best sci-drama I've ever seen.
Watch the series and if you like it, go see the movie.
../end evangelical post -
Hooray! Renew series?Hooray, SciFi! If Serenity does well in the theater, perhaps we'll see a lot of renewed interest in the series. I understand there's a three movie deal, but hey - hopefully the gang will be game for reviving the series.
Just re-watched my DVD collection, but for the folks who haven't seen FireFly check it out. The writing and acting are both excellent and it has a feel of authenticity. "Old West" in space.

Re:check out that sneaky affiliate link in the pos
Yeah, I DID think of it...
I submitted a story very similar to this 2 days ago, plugging the Serenity trailer (which I'm sorry to see they didn't mention anywhere in the Slastdot blurb.)
And I also mentioned the passing of the 30,000th member on the Browncoats site that DizzyEllie got the link credit for... But they didn't mention that either.
Yeah, yeah, sour grapes. I know.
Go ahead and mod me OffTopic if ya wanna, but I had to get that one off my chest!
Mean ol'Slashdot... Unfair... Growl, grumble... :P

Well, my days of taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle. -
Re:Watch the DVD sales not theatrical
I suspect the hardcore Whedon fans will love this, but others will be left cold. CHUD.com had an early review of a test screening, hardcore Whedon fans loved it, those who didn't know him from Adam (most of the universe) thought the movie was "Star Trek Motion Picture Bad."
Actually you're distorting the facts. The article in question at CHUD wasn't a review at all, just an article commenting on the test screening reviews showing up at Ain't It Cool News (FYI: all positive). It was never referred to as "Star Trek Motion Picture Bad". The author of the article, Devin Faraci, commented that he heard from a couple of people he knew in the industry that thought "it was more Star Trek: The Motion Picture than Wrath Of Khan". Prior to that he had been down on Serenity box office chances and conveniently, he never backed up those statements any further, even when pressed for more details on Chud's message boards. Bottom line is, Serenity has been getting killer reviews, yes, from fans but also quite a few people who are unfamiliar with Firefly. Hell, reportedly, even Kevin Smith attended one of the screenings and was impressed. -

Re:Studio Shows Movie to Fanboys
How is this news? They do preview screenings all the time.
Yes, but there have already been like six or seven test screenings in LA, two in London and one in Australia. Many who attended the various screenings were fans but quite a few were not. I've been following various test screening reviews of Serenity and have seen quite a few good reviews from non-fans.
Also, this makes real sense from a business perspective. This is an unknown property, valliantly held onto by a raving group of internet fanboys. If they did a Enterprise movie, dont you think they'd show it to some test audiences of trekkies to see if it could sell any tickets?

I got my tickets!!!
With an announcement by Joss Whedon at the Serenity official web site, the tickets to this event went on sale at just after midnight Wednesday morning. By dawn, most of the cities were sold out. By 9 a.m., all of the cities were sold out.
I happened to trip over the announcement at 1 a.m, woke the wife, and scored our tickets. We're very excited about it!!!
What's it about? One good quote that I read was, "Imagine if Star Wars had been about Han instead of Luke." (but with much, much better writing and no damned cutsie aliens).
There have been several test screenings in the past to tune the movie. Almost always, the word leaked and these turned into flash mob events for Firefly/Whedon fans. This 10 city screening is a little different. The movie is nearly the finished product, but the purpose is to incite the fan base into a word-of-mouth guerilla marketing machine.
Universal apparently thought that there was going to be trouble getting butts into seats, and created a marketing campaign and ads just for this screening. With 30,000+ registered fans at the official Serenity website, they need not have worried about that. A couple of folks have even put their tickets on eBay with bidding now at absurd levels.
This promises to be big! Check out the trailer! -

Re:TFA text (spoilers and all)
dude... don't take your kids to see this movie.
Oh absolutely! I don't take my son to see anything at this point. I would even think strongly about taking him to a Pixar film. I am talking about my wife and I going out on a "date". When you have a family, such events become increasingly more rare and therefore more precious. I want to make sure that when I take the time and effort to see a film that it is worthy of all of that time and effort. Will Star Wars fit that bill? I am still holding out a bit. Personally, I am more excited about Serenity at this point. If it is anything like the series, the writing will be excellent.

No sound in space in the movie
People who've seen the rough cut in Sydney have commented (registration required) that the movie does not have sound in space. Also, the hand-held look and feel is there.
Can't wait to see for myself.

Re:Just like TOS
I agree with you on FireFly, we can just hope that the move that is due out in September (Serenity) will re-ignite the TV series. But the fundamental flaw in FireFly was that the dialog an plots were too thoughtful. There is a chance that the darkness of Battlestar Galactica will allow the networks to give it a second chance though.

How long before the Teddy starts singing ADS?
I can see how this all got started. Some M$ guy watches the movie "AI" and then get the idea:
"Hey, that kids actually LISTENS and TAKES THE ADVICE OF that little robot Teddy bear... Here's our new meal ticket! Whoo-hoo!"
Its only a matter of time before the kid's new best friend "Teddy" starts talking up Micro$oft products... And any other company that's willing to pay big bucks to M$ to advertise to a very receptive young audience.
How long before the robot "G.I. Bill" doll? I can see it now:
"Come'on little Trooper! Let's go frag some Terrorists and help good 'ol Uncle Sam spread some Democracy!"
Not good. Just wait and see...

Micro$oft Child Assimilation Program v1.0
At least M$ has a lot of competition in the "taking over your kid's brain" market...
It's called mainstream TV.
I don't know if "Bill the Friendly Robot" can out-brainwash "Dora the Explorer" - but I'd hate to find out!

In a word, fascinatingIANA Enterprise fan - the show lost me about a year ago because of Bermaga and their silly milking of the franchise and diluting of what "Classic" Trek stood for.
But I tell you, this outpouring of support is amazing. Say what you will about the quality of the show, or the usage of the money - and I know the flood of comments about what a pitiful waste of capital this is will be starting soon. Hell, I'd like to have $3 mil to blow on [name of pet project] - who doesn't?
But here on Slashdot we love to piss and moan about the state of the entertainment industry and how people ought to vote with their money. I, for one, see this is a perfect example of some devoted fans doing just that. Too bad we didn't get this for Firefly - but we've got a film coming, so...
Bravo, fans!

Re:Continuity

Re:If you liked that...
Not supposedly, actually! Filming is complete and it's in post-production, with a release date of 30 September 2005 (although that has slipped once already).

Why can't Hollywood make movies that have great special effects AND good plots?
They can next year: In Joss Whedons Serenity

Re:Disney is off its rockerRed coats? Don't you mean Browncoats?

Re:Vera is not a Glock "sub aqua" pistol..
Absolutely. Here's the run-down:
The original Fox "OB" (official board) -- the navigation on this site takes a bit of getting used to (you should immediately go to preferences and set the number of posts displayed per page to the max when you register/sign in) and you should stay out of the off-topic forum if you don't have thick skin (there are a lot of political threads and it gets very heated at times); however, this is among the oldest and largest FF communities, it's very friendly and chatty (some threads look more like IM/IRC chat logs than newsgroup threads -- say a quick hello in the infamous "Serenity Saloon" thread if you want to see what I mean) and folks like Chris Buchanan and Adam Baldwin post there (Adam mostly in the political threads; Chris mostly to announce news)
FireflyFans.net -- also one of the first FF sites, the volume is lower than the OB (although some would argue with a better S/N ratio) -- threads here stay pretty show-focused, with only an occasional political thread that is easily avoided. Includes a great "blue sun room" section for fan-created artwork, fanfic, and filk (fan lyrics)
The new official movie site forum. still getting its legs under it, and not as popular yet as the two major sites above, but it's growing (11K+ members) and they have a point earning system to win T-shirts and stuff (note my restraint in not giving you the URL that would have given me recruitment points!) ;)
Also, be sure to check out BrownCoats.com -- it's not a forum but a great resource/catalog/archive/pedia of firefly information (episode info, bloopers, costuming, history, interviews, etc.) -
