Looking for more a challenge?
If you are looking for a complete program that has been designed from the ground up by video game industry professionals rather than academics, check out the Guildhall at SMU. Even the faculty has actual game development experience.

RU4KBASIC Floppy Rom
The May 1977 issue of Interface Age featured an article on Robert Uiterwyk's 4k Basic. The record included two test patterns; a "5" and "U*" stream, a loader, and basic dump. The player was interfaced to a "Kansas City" 300 baud tape interface at 33 1/3 rpm. It is easy to understand the lack of any standard here with the warning "Don't rely on it for more than ten or twenty loads because it will wear out."
Despite what it said at http://people.smu.edu/rmonagha/computers.html it can be patched to any 6800 system with a minumum of 6k. -
Re:Who is this aimed at?
And one already exists at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX.

Bah!
I think "first offical" is a bit off the mark. The folks at SMU have been doing this for a few years down at GuildHall. It most likely will be argued that SMU is the USC of the east, but I beg to differ. Their technology programs are second to few. Of particular interest is their Engineering Department Not to mention that they have the largest Engineering Executive Master's program in the country, and specialize in distance education.
Back to the point, USC does have a program, but it is not the "first official" -

Not the first
Didn't SMU already do this?

Re:Guildhall at SMU
I was a member of the first class (they call them cohorts) through The Guildhall @ SMU. I started in June '03, and graduated in Dec '04. (I'm now working at NCsoft, as a Software Engineer (Programmer)).
My background before The Guildhall was a BS in CS from Northwestern University, followed by 4 years of work, at two different Internet startups (2 years at each). What really made The Guildhall attractive is the fact that it is a graduate level program.
As the earlier reply mentions, the program currently only offers a certificate. The faculty is working to change that to an actual degree, but it needs work samples and graduates before that can happen. Now that the first class (my class) has graduated, I suspect that will move forward.
I don't know where all of my classmates have ended up (and of course, some are still looking for jobs) however I know there are also people working at id and Gearbox, people working on DS games, and at least one person working for a company over in Europe. -
Guildhall at SMU
Apparently they only offer a 'certificate' rather than a university degree, but the Guildhall at SMU has been running for two and a half years now.
There may be earlier programs; this is just one that I happen to know of. -
Re:The list
This might be very useful if you have a wifi-enabled autonmous robot wandering about Ilse DuBois State park...

Re:yuck!
Why do you find me scary?
I look the way I do because I feel comfortable that way. Marketing research has proven that men looking more bear-like tend to be taken more seriously. I did not believe it at first, but you will find that it actually works!
But in all seriousness, I feel that my product could be quite benificial to /. readers. Many of you dream of developing that killer game. I am offering my expertise to you so you can learn how to do it. And believe me, it is not as easy as it looks.
Peace to all of you! -
Re:That's all well and good--
Dont know, but maybe this man can cook your dinner for you?
Or failing that, Michael could come over and share a few jokes with you. -
Re:Does This Mean....
Check out this analysis of the slashdot effect:
http://www.geology.smu.edu/~dpa-www/attention_span /
You've just described caching. Everyone caches.
Squid caches trivially.http://www.squid-cache.org/
That won't save you from being slashdotted. Look into such topics as load balancing and high availability linux. -
You could try the Guildhall
There is a school in Dallas called the Guildhall. They focus on Game Design, Software Development and Art Creation.

dark matter evidence
There is some intriguing evidence of the existence of strange quark matter, a dark matter candidate, which we've recently published in the Bulletine of the Seismological Society of America. as previously discussed on

Re:Since when is Strained Silicon Secret?
During my undergrad, one of my professors of Solid State Circuits lab talked about this. She said that the reason this is hard is because when your source/gate region is partially depleted of charge carriers, there is a need to raise the source-drain gates effectively to utilize the technology. You see, one of the benefits is that the effective capacitance of your source-drain region is decreased. However, if your source-drain gates are not sufficiently increased, the remaining charge carriers remain back and over a period of time this in itself builds up a capacitance. It then begins to function like a dual capacitor device, etc.
And to counter this, you will end up using metal within your S-D zone, however that will have its own side effects - you will need more interconnects and this will increase the resistance by a very slight amount. Trivial for a small number of transistors but if you're having a few million of them, it could be painful. Also, it would mean that the entire thing is going to heat up ever so quickly.
And ofcourse, you always have issues with the Floating Body effects (warning Powerpoint).
Couple this with a hard manufacturing process, and you have a technology thats atleast going to take another 5-10 years to mature. And thats being optimistic :) -

Sure, you can get a bunch of info Here

Guildhall.
Sorely lacking from the schools mentioned in this article is the Guildhall at SMU. Not only is it backed by a major university, but it is also not in a particular faculty which means that the teachers can teach the specialized curriculum and not have to go to classes that are simply CS or Art classes poorly adapted to creating games. Add to that the fact that the numerous game companies in the Dallas area are very supportive and often have people drop by to give lectures, and you have one great potential for a school. It isn't all hype either, the people in the game industry really are participating and giving lectures to the students. I should know, since I am among the first group of students currently in the program.

Re:More detail, please
The article only points to generic links (to http://linux-ha.org/ and http://www.linuxvirtualserver.org/) and gives no useful information as to how the director was set up, nor how the shared storage works, nor how things are kept consistent. The parent is the only one so far to raise this obvious question.

Re:Clever, clever
Feel sorry for them on Monday morning though...
Monday morning!!?? You're kidding, right?
They have already noticed the "exponentially decaying attention span" of Slashdotters.
By Monday morning this story and the site will be relegated to un-clicked graveyard of "Older Stuff" -

Testing, testing...
They're just begging for a 'real' test...
... such as everyone downloading this:
ar405eng.exe (5.41 MB)
from their webserver :p
5.41MB per slashdot reader should provide a test worth of such a fat pipe ;) -
Re:They asked for it
take, for example, this 6.6MB mpeg video (Warning, direct link to video).

They asked for it
Since they seem to think they can handle the slashdotting, I've taken the liberty and searched through their site. This page has a number of links to pages which have large images and movies linked to. Hopefully, this will really provide them some load.

Found a big one one guys 113 Mbytes
Multi-sensor.tar.gz
Try a hand at downloading the above file from the site (113MB) and see what transfer rate you get?

Third Time's a Charm?
Our little departmental server has been slashdotted twice in the last year and survived!
Wait... is this a challenge?

No funWhy the fuck would someone want to tear apart an umpteen thousand dollar toy and, in the process, make it even more useless?
Yeesh. Build your own balancing bot and have at it. This isn't even a hack worthy of mention - it's more like a Segway sales pitch targeted at overbudgeted academics with too much time on their hands.

Lego Mindstorms
I attempted to build a two-wheel self balancing robot similar to this one using the lego mindstorms kit. I had a large metal ball that would roll in a cylinder and hit sensors at either end allowing the robot to adjust when it was tilting. Unfortunately the motors could never respond quick enough to prevent the machine from falling over.
I have given several of these kits as gifts, great gift for teenagers and unemployed tech workers.

Re:8086 not the first processor...
Let's not forget the 4004, which was designed for the Busicom calculator in the early 70s, but ended up being used in other applications, including the SIM-4 microcomputer.
