Yeah I've got a question: What gives?
Yeah, I got a question for you. Why did you have to be a jackass to Wil Wheaton? He was just a kid for chrissakes.
I know you get sick of this whole geek worship thing you've got going on, but come on. It seems like you treat your place in history with a mix of protectiveness and contempt.
So which is it?

Re:ConversionsStraight from the horses mouth.
"That's very nice. I always thought the movie was badly understood. There was an article in The Washington Post when it came out that was not written by a movie critic. One of the editors wrote it saying that this was a neo-Nazi movie and I was promoting Fascism. That same article was published in all the European newspapers. When I went to do the publicity tour in Europe, everybody was already looking through that lens. The Washington Post is not a reliable newspaper anyway but they said the film was written by a neo-Nazi or a Fascist and directed by one. I strongly disagree with that. I saw it as a critique of American society. It is done in an ironic way but not pushing it very hard, which I hate because then it becomes dogmatic and becomes something else other than filmmaking. It was more that the novel by Robert Heinlein is very militaristic and has a tendency to be pro-Fascist a bit. We took a lot of cues out of American society at that time, which was [President Bill] Clinton, not realizing that a couple years later this whole situation would be much more acute and now you can put the film as a blueprint over Iraq or Afghanistan. But of course, I didn't know of bin Laden at that time." -- Paul Verhoeven
So the satire of some future militaristic state is realy a satire about our own present.

Re:Perhaps ask RIM what the problem is?
I don't see how anyone here on Slashdot, short of being an employee of RIM, will be able to answer your question without pulling wild speculation out of their ass.
I don't work at RIM but I can tell you from the vast depths of my own experience as a coder -- if some code has changed, it was probably intentional. Coders are lazy (therefore opposed to making unplanned deliberate changes) and we also have the cushiest jobs in the universe (apart from Wil Wheaton's sideline gig at SG -- the lucky bastard!!!). Although, I'm sure equal emphasis could be placed on our heavy reliance on World of Warcraft, to the point where we might accidentally slip a few decimals on boring RL stuff while browsing AH for deals that can dance. -
Wil Wheaton just did this also
At his blog he talks about watching all the Star Wars movies again, and wrote up an article for this week's Geek In Review at Suicide Girls called Han Shoots First

Re:Engage the cloak!
We hope they have a dictionary too.

No entries found for "euphanism"
We have not found any entries on our dictionary databases for the word you entered. Perhaps you are looking for one of the following instead?
euphonism:
Euphonism \Eu"pho*nism\, n. An agreeable combination of sounds; euphony.
Nah ... must be tacarat figures Google should employ this chick (GENDER: male !) instead :

I'm starting to wonder what "girl" means in "suicidegirls" ???
Maybe it's a euphemism... -

Right.

Re:video ipod
Are people doing that?? I mean, creating their own shows and distributing them for iPod users?
Yes. Some talk about Digg. Some of them are robots. And some of them are naked. -
Re:Porn?

Here is some ipod porn (its free too)
-
Hrm, this link looks awfully suspicious, then
http://suicidegirls.com/ipod/
Suicide Girls is the site that's somehow managed to get itself to be considered, at least in some fringe academic[esque] conferences I've been attending that tend to deal with pop culture and [others more specifically on] video games, some strange sort of 'woman's lib porn', where women with 'non-standard' body profiles (which apparently means that it's not "Beautiful young women" but the much more liberating, "Beautiful young women with tattoos and piercings") are in the spreads, apparently without any men. They have blogs where they talk with site members, etc, which I believe is to make it harder to objectify them, and there was apparently some shindig a while back where some of them quit the site for some reason but their pictures and blogs stayed online. But enough about some lame excuse 'explaining' why I'm still a morally just person for looking at women without their clothes on.
In any event, it's a porn site (don't ask me to describe it, but, by virtue of being human, I apparently have the innate ability to know it when I see it) and you can download videos to your iPod and even subscribe to a video podcast. I can only imagine other sites will, at some point, have a giant black monolith fall in their backyard so that they too can figure out how to make .m4v's as well.
Porn ignoring video iPods indeed. Rubbish. If it's a medium, it's been used to transmit porn. -
SuicideGirls PornCast
I believe it also said something about SuicideGirls.
Which is right here

Auctions for a cause...I always think it's kind of neat when these sorts of auctions happen, because people tend to bid things up that they could otherwise get for free or cheap (such as something signed by Neil Gaiman - he's a pretty personable guy, and is happy to sign things in person or by special arrangement mailed to certain bookstores that he frequents...and not just books (disclaimer: this site contains Not Safe For Work material, but aside from a few tiny ads way down at the bottom of the page, that particular page is safe)) because the money is going for a good cause. Like the Penny-Arcade Child's Play auction, for instance. (Of course, there are a bunch of first-editions and limited editions in this auction, so that might also be part of it. But I've never really understood the collector's mind.)
Or, perhaps I'm just being too optimistic, and people bid because they go insane at auctions.

He must have better urls than I do
I wish I knew the sites that he visits!
I like stuff along the lines of suicidegirls and lithiumpicnic but I'm too stingy/poor to pay up.
Most porn I see on the internet has tired and sad looking women in it. I don't find it very addictive because it's mostly not very good quality - not very sexy women posing in not very sexy positions, or ugly couples rutting. Certainly not my idea of addictive but perhaps my aesthethic taste in porn is a bit more discerning that Senator Brownback. He must be too easily impressed. -
Re:Behind Samus...
I'm sorry, but that just puts all sorts of naughty ideas into my head!
I've seen those pictures here. -
Yes, but if Suicide Girls ever got a hold of this
IANAL, but I've read a lot of Groklaw, and from what I can understand Nintendo has never really cracked down on NES, SNES, or N64 roms, maybe it has something to do with over-the-internet, rather than in-the-shopping-malls where Joe Sixpack and Jane PonyKeg wander. At this point I deem it perfectly safe for Suicide Girls to start selling these mame-wanabees on their site.
You can put down the DMCA now...
Thank you. -
NSFW
It boggles the mind that sci-fi authors nowadays need to place ads for Suicide Girls to make an extra buck. Not. Safe. For. Work.

Re:"All's well that ends well"
That and the alt culture at Hot Topic is about as tame as it can get. That store screams PG-13 - which is ok by NoA.
If the Suicide Girls were selling nintendos on their site NoA would likely have a problem with it. That site is just a bit more sexual than the alt culture you experience at Hot Topic. -
Re:I said it before...
Except that the user that posted the names of those games was a guy. That doesn't meet my definition of a "hot goth chick."

the SG site - half porn, half art
I called "bullshit" on it for about 9 months for the same reason you do now. There are boobs, they charge money - you can't get a more simplistic definition of porn than "Boobs For Profit".
My girlfriend is still a member - not a model, mind you, but a paying member, and has been for over a year now. I finally gave in and tried to see her point of view on what I considered a run-of-the-mill women-objectifying porn site. This girl considers herself a feminist, and swears that she feels like SG is a site which allows women to be open and artistic and just be themselves without holding back. There is a new generation of feminists out there right now that aren't the bra-burners of the 60's. These women believe they shouldn't have to dress like a man to get equal respect - they want to be sexy and respected.
That's kind of the premise behind SG I think. These women basically say, "Hey, I'm going to show you my tits, not because you are paying for it and you are telling me to, but because I'm strong and I love myself and I love my body".
So my GF is a member, and I don't get on her case about it any more. It's a place where she can talk to other women, and sure there are jackasses on there, but there are always going to be jackasses. It's the internet. And SG has a lot of other aspects to it that I personally like - most of all their interviews - they interview some really interesting people (http://suicidegirls.com/words/).
Anyway, I thought Nintendo was ready to break out of their strictly younger market and try to appeal to a mature crowd once in a while? Why spend all kinds of time and money in advertising trying to get Metroid and Zelda to be household names, and then try to restrict what people can actually write those words? -
Here's the infringing image
Here's a link to the page with image for which the nastygram was sent. The problem with the C&D letter is that it was too vague and the link didn't go directly to the infringing image.

Some pics do have nintendos in them...
To be fair, some of the pics (for example http://suicidegirls.com/media/girls/Kiscica/photo
s /Duck%20Hunt/23.jpg have Nintendo stuff in them. All in all, a stupid lawsuit, though. -
Re:Simple Explanation
Yea we wouldn't want SuicideGirls and Nintendo getting mixed up by the search engines.

Bagsie Al
Bagsie Al. I saw her first. Maybe a little mad, but hey, why change the habit of a lifetime?
-
Re:I "Read"...
Score 4, Funny.
That was my take on "I read Playboy [or any other pin-up mag] for the interviews" as well. Until last week, when I followed a deep link to a site I didn't know for an interview with James O'Barr (the guy that spent the better part of the eighties drawing the original The Crow comic book). It was only at the very bottom of the page, after reading the interview, that I saw some buttons saying "Recent photoset...". I had happened upon an online pin-up mag (with a somewhat goth/alternative slant) that I read for an interview! -

Pr0n Leads the way
Originally posted at http://george.hotelling.net/90percent/linkage/pr0
n _leads_the_way.php:I found a pretty insightful rant (safe for work) copied from the business guy at the altporn site Suicide Girls. I wish the RIAA would start tracking how people hear about the albums that they buy, so that they could stop freaking out.
Porn has a long history of figuring out how to use new media to their advantage. Perhaps because porn is driven by our basest instinct we understand it on far deeper levels than widget building, and can apply that understanding to things that we don't fully comprehend intellectually. Maybe it's just because there's such intense competition in the industry that forces companies to innovate. I'm sure there's a "free hand of the market" joke in there, but I'll be damned if I can find it.
The VCR was largely decried by the MPAA because they saw it as cutting into their profits. When the VCR was still new, MPAA president Jack Valenti said the VCR is [to the movie industry]...as the Boston strangler is to the woman home alone. (which of course means that he wasn't opposed to the VCR). A driver of early VCR purchases was being able to watch porn movies without having to go to theaters filled with creepier people than you. Fast forward 20 years and that Boston strangler makes up a huge portion of movie studio profits.
While I'm skeptical that porn can drive any technology - who really needs porn on their cellphone at blazing speeds - the porn industry typically ahead of the curve. Let's hope the RIAA realizes this and stops suing 12 year old girls.

Re:Who pays for Porn?some people have wierd or just really specific fetishes. Ponying up a little will get you a constant supply of high quality stuff that its hard to find for free
I wouldn't pay for pics of like Jenna Jameson though. That'd just be stupid.
-
Re:Who pays for Porn?
Especially when there are excellent specific sites like Suicide Girls that treat the people paying well and have a brilliantly laid out site.
No, I don't subscribe, but if I ever wanted to pay for porn they would be the first to get the cash.
