SUSE cannot match what BSD offers...
Is it any wonder people think Linux users are a bunch of flaming homosexuals when its fronted by obviously gay losers like these?! BSD has a mascot who leaves us in no doubt that this is the OS for real men! If Linux had more hot chicks and gorgeous babes then maybe it would be able to compete with BSD! Hell this girl should be a model!
Linux is a joke as long as it continues to lack sexy girls like her! I mean just look at this girl! Doesn't she excite you? I know this little hottie puts me in need of a cold shower! This guy looks like he is about to cream his pants standing next to such a fox. As you can see, no man can resist this sexy little minx. Don't you wish the guy in this pic was you? Are you telling me you wouldn't like to get your hands on this ass?! Wouldn't this just make your Christmas?! Yes doctor, this uber babe definitely gets my pulse racing! Oh how I envy the lucky girl in this shot! Linux has nothing that can possibly compete. Come on, you must admit she is better than an overweight penguin or a gay looking goat! Wouldn't this be more liklely to influence your choice of OS?
With sexy chicks like the lovely Ceren you could have people queuing up to buy open source products. Could you really refuse to buy a copy of BSD if she told you to? Personally I know I would give my right arm to get this close to such a divine beauty!

Re:The GNU/Linux naming issue, as I see it.

Re:PREDICTION
Actually the underlying distro is SuSE Linux Desktop 1.0, as noted in Sun's Java Desktop System FAQ.
-
Re:Finally
SuSe SLES8 has been able to run on those machines for a while now (well actually what SuSe says is p660 but the p660 is just the H80 with faster clock speed chips) See SuSe Linux Enterprise Server 8 for IBM iSeries/pSeries

64bit drivers...
after posting some hardware sugs, i forgot about the driver issue:most of the newest 64bit driver work from the
major manufacturers appear to be for Windows(ech). ( Here's a review that came out today.)
The latest Linux drivers from nvidia aren't too old; their last nForce3 update was in Dec 2003 and the gpu drivers in Jan 2004
Tyan have a page of drivers, as does Highpoint, and Adaptec
Look into the suse amd64 message boards - they seem to be having some success...

2.6 kernel
"One of the first commercially available Linux distributions to feature the 2.6 kernel by default."
Yep, SuSE 9.1 has already been released on CD/DVD, complete with kernel 2.6.4-54 I believe. However, Mandrake 10 is already available for download while SuSE isn't available for download until June 4th.
Personally I prefer SuSE over Mandrake, but if you really really want a prebuilt 2.6 kernel based system NOW, you can go ahead and grab a copy from Mandrake. -

Re:I Don't Believe You
To be clear -- it's SuSE from about two years ago, not current SuSE.
Actually, it's based on SuSE Linux Desktop 1.0, which SuSE released last year and has not yet updated itself, so it is a current SuSE, just not their more quickly updated consumer release.

nVidia support the iAMD64 instruction set for Linux in their klunky closed source way. I do not know if YAST will grab iAMD64 nVidia drivers from their web site with a click of a button or if more geeking is needed to get it to work. nVidia

getting back to the original question
OK, so the fans of the various distros are all comparing how big the penises of their favorites are. It's a fun exercise, but not what the guy asked about. I'd suggest that someone new to Linux look at: Mandrake, Xandros, Lycoris, SUSE, or Linspire. Each of these has a company behind it that's placing a high priority on making their distro accessible to new users, and that sounds like your top priority as well.
-
My own suggestions
Echoing some of the other posts here: It depends what you want to get out of Linux.
If you "just want to use it" (i.e. you just want a nice desktop system that isn't proprietary, or just want to try out some Linux programs) I'd recommend (roughly in order of preference):
- Knoppix - don't even need to 'install' to try it out
- SuSe (Or is it SuSE? Or Suse? I can never keep it straight). They've always seemed like a reasonably decent distribution, and now with Novell's apparently-earnest-and-sincere backing, I tend to think of them as "the new Red Hat" (in that they'll be a 'default' distribution in the near future and thus useful to be familiar with).
- Mandrake - I personally didn't much care for what I saw of Mandrake, but many people do, and this one is often suggested for "newbies".
If, on the other hand, you actually want to learn Linux:
- Slackware - my personal favorite. It seems to be the most "generic-Unix-like" in general style. I think that although it's fairly "manual" in terms of setup, it's not difficult. But that's my opinion. It's probably the easiest-to-install-and-configure "nerd" distribution.
- Gentoo - takes forever to install initially, because it actually compiles (most) of itself directly from source. You can configure it for the best compiler optimizations for your hardware and have, theoretically, the fastest-possible system. Maybe a bit of a steep learning curve to start with though - although if you're up for it, it may be worth it.
- Debian - Possibly one of the most obtuse installation procedures (at least, last time I tried it), but once installed it's amazingly easy to maintain. ("apt-get" really is as cool as they say it is). Debian's one of the "big" famous distributions also, so if you find yourself working with a wide variety of Linux boxen, it's good to be at least a little familiar with it. Debian's other downside (apart from the initial install procedure) from my perspective is that by default their software versions tend to be quite old, though you can get around this by reconfiguring your system to pull updates from the "unstable" and "testing" branches.
Those would be my suggestions, anyway.

The price from suse for five copies of linux is $598. Isn't this still almost half the price of Microsoft Operating Systems?

Re:Intensely Disliked SUSE 9.1I don't believe you.
He is right.
But IIRC there's a fixed boot-disk available now. ...Yes
Big deal. It was recognized last week or so. -
Re:I seriously didnt like Suse
Suse certainly does provide you with the kernel you're running. If you look at their patches page, you can see all the
.rpm's have .src.rpm equivalents, including the kernel.
I haven't checked, but I'm pretty sure that the source for all the things on side 1 of the DVD is on side 2 as well...
As for 'real package management', I think (and I've only just started to use YaST today!) it's great. No problems with package management...

Re:Excellent news for the FOSS community!
So does SUSE with the Openexchange Server
-
Re:Motives?Novell is also tearing a page out of Microsoft's playbook. Remember when Microsoft rolled out the free Internet Explorer to compete against Netscape?
By releasing it to Open Source, Novell also broadened the development community, which will (hopefully) be able to keep pace with Microsoft's attempts to block non-Outlook solutions. Brilliant move, IMHO. Alternately, you can use Novell/Suse's groupware application (AKA OpenExchange) located here. This product creates an Exchange-like server for Outlook users to connect to. Or, use OpenExchange with Ximian and be done with it all.
Well done, Novell!
-
Groupware Standard
If Evolution then connects to Suse's Openexchange Server as seamlessly as to M$'s, then suddenly Microsoft Exchange Server is the unwitting new standard in groupware servers.

Re:Depends on your interpretation of "pirated"
That's not piracy.
It absolutely is. You are a pirate of the high seas! You are depriving school children of their milk (through the Gates foundation). You are an evil, evil, thief!
Microsoft says you can't do it, you are stealing. Just as you can't buy a pc without an operating system, even though you are going to re-image it through your corporate licensed image. But I'm putting a new image...yeah, but you still have to pay twice. Don't like it? Take it to Congress!
And be prepared to put the Congresspeople in Microsoft's pocket against the ones in yours.

Re:didn't they just announce...
And this is where your fud blows up in your face. For the base price of a MS OS (98+) you get an online KB for free, windows update for free, support from hundreds of vendors and there KB's for free. What do you get from Red Hat, a single point of contact for support or RTFM from people in the community? If I were to purchase a desktop OS purely on the idea of support MS products would be top of my list due to the fact they actually might be around for awhile.
This is just wrong. Red Hat has all of those things plus you can go to user groups for special needs. I don't know who the 100's of vendors are, but I suspect you count every device maker out there. Just having support is not enough. I have spent hours on the phone trying to get an answer from MS($120/hr+), Dell(mostly free), and other vendors. I have spent minutes on the Phone with Red Hat(free install support with purchase), Suse(free install support with purchase), and IBM(yes we pay boat loads to these guys, but hey its IBM). The supports structures these companies provide, allowed me to escalate a call much quicker, and all took into account the criticality that I assigned the problem. Basing a purchase of software on whether a company will be around for a while is just plain dumb, because you still have no guarantee of support. MS frequently drops support for products, and leaves customers hanging that choose not to upgrade.
IF I WERE TO BUY A DESKTOP OS PURELY ON THE IDEA OF SUPPORT, LINUX PRODUCTS WOULD BE TOP OF MY LIST DUE TO THE FACT I HAVE MANY PLACES TO FIND ANSWERS, AND THE VENDORS RESPECT MY TIME. -
Interesting...
First they sync their release cycle with SUSE, then then rename their desktop products to personal and professional - just like SUSE, and now their releasing a Linux Desktop for the enterprise.
Come along Redhat, do keep up.. -

Blender was included in SuSE Linux 9.0 Professional (which I use); however, I do not believe it was a default install. But there noneoftheless. It will also be included in SuSE Linux Professional 9.1. SuSE Linux Professional 9.1 Graphics Page.

Suse 9.1 Pro ISOsI'm eagerly awaiting the release of Suse 9.1 Pro, which is due to ship on May 8th, but I'm guessing the 'unethical'-but-still-legal ISOs will be leaked to the net a little sooner than that, and definitely way before the FTP-only version is made available.
I've got a gut feeling that Novell's SuSE is going to eventually unseat RedHat as the #1 solution for server AND desktop, so I'd might as well dump my RH9 desktop for it now.
--
-
Re:just a few more days till SUSE 9.1
Yeah, but they're not shipping the DVDs in the US until May 8th according to their store.
-
Re:*cough* Bull shit *cough* Bull shit *cough*
Neither is bullshit. I've never payed for a single copy of Linux that I use because I had to. I purchase every major version number of my chosen distro to support a good thing, but even that I typically split between some family members for a net cost of around $10.
At work we use nothing but Linux, and guess what? It's free we payed nothing for it. If we wanted support, we'd pay for it, but it works so well that we've never had to. The most training I've ever had to give people is in software, not the OS, which usually involves about 15 minutes of teaching them LaTeX (our standard for documentation). Linux is so intuitive they pick it up immediately and flawlessly.
Linux has amazing stability and performance. Our typical machine here has been running for more than a year without a reboot, and our compute nodes have never gone down during a job, only during scheduled system upgrades.
On the other hand, most Windows users I know payed hundreds of dollars for their machines and constantly battle OS crashes in the middle of critical tasks. A friend of mine who works at a windows only business spends most of his time repairing damage to machines caused by crashes, and training people in maintaining windows and avoiding virii.
MS doesn't work compared to Linux, and Linux is free. -
Re:Clue-By-Four for previous posters
Is that a valid complaint? What distro slaps a big sticker with "GPL INSIDE!!" on their covers? I just searched Suse's main product page. No mention of GPL there. You can find it on their Support page though, but it is obvious that the license is NOT a major selling point in Suse's eyes.
Why should Sun be any different?
On Redhat's page for RHEL Features and Benefits there is no mention of the GPL. Again, Redhat does not see fit to aggressively market the GPL.
Why should Sun be any different?
On IBM's Linux page, again, no overt mention of the GPL.
Why should Sun be any different?
-
On Linux...gcc 3.x, wget, and from there all else follows. Within a few days, Redhat 7.0 can be running KDE 3.2 and OOo. Or I can cheat and just use a DVD.

Scribus is a desktop publishing program for Unix and Linux which has been gathering momentum recently. SuSe now proudly proclaim that with SuSe 9.1, Professional layouts can be prepared with the desktop publishing application Scribus. Scribus is also recieving critical acclaim from other big open source quarters such as Newsforge who recently proclaimed Scribus to be one of Free Software's Killer Applications.
ut what is Scribus really like? Can anyone just pick it up and use it? Is it really as powerful as they say it is? And does it live up to the hype surrounding it?
About ScribusScribus is a desktop publishing program for Unix and Linux. It is built with the Qt libraries and is run natively in the KDE desktop environment. Scribus is published under the Gpl and is similar to similar to Adobe PageMaker, QuarkXPress or Adobe InDesign. Scribus has an unusually small development team and is mostly the work of a German programmer called Franz Schmid. The Scribus team are positioning the program as an easy to use DTP publishing program for the Linux and Unix operating systems with support available for professional publishing features. These professional publishing features include:- CMYK Colour
- Press Ready PDF Creation
- Further advanced PDF features for making interactive PDFs exist together with a large amount of support for the PDF 1.4 specification including:
- Transparency
- Encryption
- Form Field
- Annotations
- Bookmarks
EPS and PDF import/export
Complete ICC colour management
Font embedding and sub-setting in both postscript and PDF exportIn addition to this Scribus also provides:
- A WYSIWYG viewpoint for document creation
- An XML based file format allowing for easier file recovery if corruption occurs
- Drawing tools for custom shapes including: lines, curves, ellipses, bezier curves, polygons, etc.
- Drag'n'drop with KDE 3, including a Drag'n'drop scrapbook for frequently used items such as text blocks, logo images, backgrounds etc
As can be seen Scribus certainly isn't devoid of features, and there are many others in the program which I haven't described above. All in all, Scribus is a fairly feature rich program and more features such as importing from Microsoft Office and OO.org are expected in future releases. Installation of Scribus
I installed Scribus by going to the download section of the Scribus homepage in order to obtain the latest version which at this moment in time is 1.1.6. There are several different methods of installation available, including source and prepackaged files. Prepackaged files are available in the form of RPMs for Red Hat 9, Fedora Core 1 and SuSe 9, Deb files are also available for Debian users.
Since I'm using Fedora Core 1 I downloaded the RPM from the site and installed it. I used the Scribus website instead of a Fedora Yum repository as I have only been able to find out of date versions of Scribus on them. When installing the RPM I did encounter a dependency issue in which I needed to install a program called

Re:Good question
Err... I've seen it manys ways both ways. Taken as an acronym suse is:
Software und System Entwicklung
Entwicklung = development
und = and
and it is natural not to capitalize the article. Taken as the registered corporate name, it's SUSE. Both are right, though currently you'll see more SUSE. -
Re:Well...
Buy something like this.
Free software, but you are paying for support and media. -
BSD releases custom babe!
You just can't take Linux seriously when its fronted by losers like these. Would you buy software from them? I don't think so! You Linux groupies need to find some sexy girls like her! I mean just look at this girl! Doesn't she excite you? I know this little hottie puts me in need of a cold shower! This guy looks like he is about to cream his pants standing next to such a fox. As you can see, no man can resist this sexy little minx. I mean are you telling me you wouldn't like to get your hands on this ass?!
With sexy chicks like the lovely Ceren you could have people queuing up to buy open source products. Could you really refuse to buy a copy of BSD if she told you to? Come on, you must admit she is better than an overweight penguin or a gay looking goat! Don't you wish you could get one of these? Personally I know I would give my right arm to get this close to such a divine beauty!

Increase the babe cycle!
I mean are you telling me you wouldn't like to get your hands on this ass?!

Re:"all but surpassed"
Not seen YaST then? Looks quite a bit like the WinXP screenshot you linked to, as in organised into major groups, then further divided.
In fact, I'll go out on a limb here and say IHBT, as the KDE config stuff is very different to the screenshots you linked to. -
BSD uses hot geek babe to beat Linux
