Re:Parent is overrated. Mod down please.
A software key sniffer is more vulnerable. Hardware versions are widely rumored to be seeing field use. Hell, ThinkGeek sells one, though it's too big to conceal easily.

QCast Tuner
You can also use the QCast Tuner to play DivX on your PS2 although I think the methodology is different. It looks like the QCast simply makes your PS2 a TV out using the networking adapter whereas the PS2Reality lets you play Divx off a burned CD. At least... that's what it sounds like... I can't get to the article.

3 game cubes that can run Linux (and 1 that can't)
So you want "Linux for game cube". You didn't specify "Nintendo" or capitalize "GameCube". Thus, any generic "game cube" is OK.
First of all, a "game cube" with a similar architecture to Nintendo's, the Power Macintosh G4 Cube, can run Yellow Dog Linux.
This roughly cube-shaped gaming PC and this even smaller PC can probably run Mandrake.
Now, if you're looking for Linux on a Nintendo GameCube console, you're out of luck: that's the only one that can boot only from a completely proprietary storage medium. There's currently no way to get homebrew code to run on the thing. If it could boot off one of the ports on the bottom (like the GBA can), the situation would be somewhat different.

Re:Do I even need to say it?

Re:Are we happy yet? ;)
I disagree. Most of us no longer think of digital watches as a neat idea. But a remote control watch that operates my TV, that's a neat idea.

Re:Duplicate story
No, they just sell them.
A month or so later we were Slashdotted. And promptly thereafter ThinkGeek was acquired by the good folks at Andover.Net who have since been acquired by the great folks at VA Software. Andover.Net then became OSDN which is the central entry point for the Open Source community's favorite web sites such as ThinkGeek (hey that's us!), slashdot.org, linux.com, sourceforge.net, and freshmeat.net. -
Re:Duplicate story"Remember, incompetent editors, you can be replaced by a program [news.google.com]
."Clearly, there's nobody at OSDN owns one of these or we wouldn't have such slip-ups on slashdot
:-) -
Re:Cha-ching!
Why doesn't the XBox section sell a modchip and linux distribution?
-
What I'd like.
I personally like
/dev/blanket, and /dev/pillow from ThinkGeek. -
Thinkgeek
Find something cool on Thinkgeek
... -
How about only $35 USD!
Here's a $35 way to do the same stuff that XP MCE does, but better (i.e. non-microsoft)
Even better, you can support the OSDN and get one at ThinkGeek.

OpenBSD sells posters...
Check out http://www.openbsd.org/orders.html for the OpenBSD posters. There's one for every release since 2.6, plus one for the OpenSSH project. I personally think that the 3.2 poster is the coolest yet, but that's just my opinion.
Also, check out this link for a poster containing a map of the Linux 2.4 source tree.
And if you're just in it for plain geeky posters, I would suggest Perfectly Scientific, for their range of Prime Number posters.

Re:Gaming is not only about CPU and graphics card.Well, I was thinking more in Quake III direction, although I admit it's not the only game out there.
:)Also, something else I'd like add about pro gaming. Check out major gaming championships, like WCG. Which games are played there? Quake III, Counter Strike, FIFA, StarCraft... One of the reasons these games are chosen is because they are popular. Another - they can push the hardware to the limit and make gamers get interested in purchasing newer hardware. Yes, that's right - you need someone to sponsor those competitions. Most of these games are unplayable (seriosly) on the notebook.
I agree with your point about USB devices getting popular. But, if you will have to drag with you Genius PowerWheel with Pedals (don't tell me you play Colin McRay without it
:)), Sony headphones, a proper mouse and keyboard for that matter, then using your notebook actually loses any sense. It becomes almost as easy to bring a proper box, using something like GearGrip Pro. -
Re:Shape of these small computers...I like these small computers, but I would rather see a PC made the same size/look as a standard piece of audio equipment (cd player or receiver size) so that I could put it in with my audio equipment and not have it seem out of place.
These cubes are small, but they're a weird akward shape.
Then you want something like this. You will loose a lot of the features of the XPC, but it all depends on what you want to do with it.

ThinkGeek saves the day
http://www.thinkgeek.com/cubegoodies/posters/
... There's only one Linux poster, but it seems kinda neat. Check out the other posters too, cause they dont ALL have to be about Linux/BSD. -
There is thinkgeek
Try looking in thinkgeek's poster section. particularly interesting is the linux kernal map.

- 10 kinds of people

Unless my

Re:Boycott!!
DAMN RIGHT! I was actually thinking about a nice monitor and a nice penguin for Christmas.... for me. I might have to spring for some think geek bumper stickers for everyone else. College budgets don't allow for much you know, especially when you are getting yourself a monitor.
As for the DMCA applying to this... If it applies to prices, then it is WAAAAAYYYYY to broad in its powers. If that's the case, I will now copyright the letter "e". -
Boycott!!
We have been given DMCA notices regarding the posting of "Black Friday" sale prices from the following companies:
Wal*Mart
Target
Best Buy
Staples
SCRRAATCH!! off the shopping list. Looks like everyone is getting a thinkgeek tshirt for Xmas this year.
Grandma would look pretty cool look with </geek> on the back :) -
Dell Quiet Key
Specifically, the newer black ones that come with the desktop systems.
The only keyboard that I've tried in the last 4 months that doesn't stick when I'm typing like mad (and doesn't cause any double-types). Quiet, yet responsive.
Alternately, you can try this puppy. -
Wait...So does this mean that my regular ol' decaf soap I've been using all along has the same effects as caffeinated soap?
This is indeed a disturbing development...

Re:Special gadgets
Nah, we don't need no stinking high powered lasers on our wrist watches, just a nice Green one.

speakers aren't the only important thingYou might first consider getting him something better than his current sound card. Internal ISA and PCI sound cards are subject to RF interference from other components inside the case. Therefore, without good shielding around the DAC and all the connections leading to the analog cable, and on the end of said cable, there will be a lot of static and noise. On many computers you will find that with no sound playing, if you turn the speaker volume up, you will hear clicking, chirping, and hissing when you do things like move the mouse.
USB audio connectors such as the Extigy and the Stereo Link, on the other hand, have an all-digital connection to the computer and shielding around all the electronic components. This will produce much cleaner sound.
There's no point getting good speakers if the audio being played on them is of poor quality.

Re:What Slashdot DOESNT want you know
You are dumb.
Fortunatly, Thinkgeek has something for the people who have to work with you. -
Re:Why are we so excited about free-as-in-beer?
Many comic artists are moving to selling dead tree versions to raise money. I'm also glad to see that more of the comics that sell t-shirts are moving away from cafe press: example MegaTokyo has gotten a store on ThinkGeek. In fact due to recent circumstances Piro is trying to make a living off being an artist. The problem is that very few webcomics are actually good, or even updated regulary.
And now the obligatatory comic plugs:
Something Positive
Errant Story -
re: Sell things less than cost? - offtopicWTF? If you mean business in general not selling things for less than cost then why god, oh why, has Wal-Mart not been shut down? They open up in a small to mid-size town, predatory price everything (below cost), drive the mom-and-pop and local small business OUT of business and then begin to raise prices. Using a "loss leader" to entice people into the store is one thing - loss leading the entire store to monopolize the market is another.
Damn, sorry for the rant. I blame it on my caffeine drip being a little weak.. guess I need more Bawls. All donations gladly accepted

Re:Now that the source has been opened up
Now that the source has been opened up
It hasn't. They are CONSIDERING it.
I'd love for someone to prove me wrong
There, I proved you wrong. Where's my prize? I'll like a tin of that weird goopy stuff from Think Geek. Thanx.
P.S.
I'll happily accept one of their Caffine Sampler Packs to not do this to you in the future.
I'm not above bribery, I'm a parent... -

This is why they make coffee. Or Mountain Dew. Or caffeinated soap.

Re:see why...
I like having a cord on my mouse and keyboard because 1) i know it's connected and 2) i know another isn't. Wireless keyboards etc. have no less a security risk...
Don't place too much confidence in the security of your keyboard, someone might slip one of these on. -
Re:Any long amount of time in front of a computer
well, thats precisely why we have caffine beverages such as the Monster Energy Drink
-
road warriors
Roll up monitors and roll up keyboards together with a small pc like the cappuccino could make a pretty good on the go solution. Now all we need are some portable fuel cells for power to complete the picture...

Work vs NightClub
I wear pretty casual clothes at work. A (mostly ThinkGeek) T-Shirt, jeans and sport shoes are my kind of thing. While at work nobody complains about how i dress, the nightclub i went to last saturday, kicked us out just because of the sport shoes. How about that
:-) -
What about zalman?
Are the silent flower heatsinks worth getting (non-overclocked 2Ghz)? I might, but they're pretty expensive.
-
Alternate coolers
Well, right now, I'm personally using this for my fan, and it works really well.
I've also been looking for a good liquid-cooling system, but has anyone solved the problem of getting rid of condensation yet? I don't want to have to mae a runoff tube leading out of my case to a bucket. *g* -
Re:Yeah but at least tux is coolOh, stop! That ridiculous-looking penguin is *NOT* cool, by any stretch of the imagination. What it represents may be cool, but it is the dorkiest symbol in the IT industry.
Yup, that's exactly why I wear a Tux hat. Because it's dorky, and I'm a dork!
-
My Shirts
I usually wear my " I Read you E-Mail" shirt to work... or my, "Go away, or I will replace you with a very small shell script!" --All courtsey of Think Geek's website. I have several others that I wear, but those to are my best!

Re:Needs to be consumerized..
Check out the Terrapin CD Video recorder (ThinkGeek link). It's slightly more than your price point at $280, but it has all of the basic features you mentioned, except DVD writing. Never used one myself, but it seems interesting.
-
Perhaps.
One of the small-town grocery stores nearby actually sells CD-Rs and CD-RWs at pretty decent prices, and place them next to the blank VHS tapes in the store. Seeing as to how they're becoming more ubiquitous, and devices like the Terapin VCD Recorder (at http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/video/57a6/) are starting to appear, perhaps CD-RWs could give VHS a run for its money, with comparable video and audio quality, as well as interoperability with a computer. For instance, you just missed Everybody Loves Raymond, so you hit KaZaA and somebody uploaded a VCD for you. So yeah, they've got their merits.

Re:I'm dumb
Hmmm, some guy's wearing a crypto suit.
Well, those crypto t-shirts have been available for a long time. So I guess it was only a matter of time until they made a whole suit. -
Size Issues
The grand thing about DVDs and CDs is that they are the same size and work of reasonably similar technologies, at least similar enough to integrate into a single device. The problem with MD is that it's size is unconventional (what with the "boxy thing" that they are in like the earlier Mac CDROMs), this is why I personally I wouldn't go for MD again (I had one, it got stolen).
Next time I think I'm going to go for a player that can play VBR (Variable Bit Rate) (Specifically -APS) MP3s from half-size CDRs. My personal favourite is <plug> this one </plug>.
