Indeed, under the prevailing interpretation of the Constitution, corporations have the same rights as individuals. in the U.S anyway.

Hate to tell ya, Maynard, but corporations have a lot more rights than you seem to suspect.

In 1975 federal courts began to recognize coporations as entities that could be protected under the fourth amendment right. In 1986 Dow Chemical stopped the EPA from flying planes over its property thanks to its proclamation that it had fourth amendment rights. That same year California courts granted one of their public utilities protection under the 1st amendement.

They have been granted rights. Their charters are almost NEVER revoked. They can be in more courtrooms than you can, talk louder than you can and are gaining ground on you every day.

Until there's a constitutional amendment that states that corporations have no natural rights, they will continue to persue them. It is only too easy to see that it is in their best interests.

No, I've been reading it for over 15 years. Their articles are mostly in the category of "stress relief" - harmless editorials that give their readers the sense that they've got a conscience, without harming the machine. Otherwise we'd see some effects of their rhetoric, increased (truly) free markets of leveled competition, reduced exec pay, the death of underperforming corporations, etc. I think you haven't read Manufacturing Consent.

Lets check these 'facts':

So the Chinese Army did not send in tanks to stop students protesting?
- The US Govt has used the army against its own population. Check the protests in the 60's. The US regularly uses its army both overtly (iraq, grenada) and covertly (cambodia, iran, south america) against other countries.

So those executions I saw where they had the people kneel and put a bullet in their brain never happened?
- The US executes a truck-load of people. In fact, this is a problem highlighted by both Amnesty International and the US Supreme Court.

So there really is freedom of religion and speech in China?
- Freedom on religion and speech? No problem (as long as you are not a muslim). Yes, I will conceded that on this point, the US does provide significantly more freedoms.

And the Chinese did not lob missiles over an island full of people to keep them in line?
- The US government regularly lobs missiles into cities and towns (iraq, afghanistan). Dont be fooled into thinking these 'smart bombs' are really that smart - 17,000 iraqis can't be wrong (but they are dead).

- TV does propogate myths in both directions - dont believe everything your overlords tell you.

Well, lets see... Who is it that actually LIVES in nature, grows the food you eat and mines the resources for your daily living. Who breathes fresh air and toils to make an honest living?

You do know that food production and mining in the US are inherently and inescapably unprofitable when in direct competition with other regions in the world and survive only by the subsidies given to you by those "city slickers", don't you? Now, it would be rather different if there is an _auction_ of the spectrum. The other issue is how long the licenses last(I favor shorter term licenses)-and what is done with the revenue from the auction. I personally think part of the revenue from the auction of spectrum should be used to reward the inventors that make spectrum more useful-and the rest should help lower the worst taxes.

The last thing we need is another boondoggle to make the rich richer.

Have you ever read _anything_ Nader, the man the coined the term corporate welfare, had to say about what corporate welfare is. Corporate welfare isn't just cash payments or subsidies-it includes preferential legislation that lets someone rich have something for nothing. Citizenship rights are at a certain level a funny kind of property rights--like property rights in land--and those citizenship rights include a share in various public lands and other public assets. Countries with sane immigration policies select for immigrants they see as benefiting their country as a whole in some substantial way--the expansion of the H-1b program gave corporations the right to make those kinds of decisions. The American public was overwhelmingly against the expansion of the H-1b program. Congress was paid over $113 Million in campaign donations to enact an unpopular policy that was specifically profitable to the corporations involved. Do you have any evidence that the H-1b program acted to increase the value of public assets in America as oppose to simply spread them around among more people? What I just see is a law that decreased the value of US citizenship for US tech workers-and let corporations use that value for their own benefit. That fits Nader's classical definition of corporate welfare.

C'mon, leave moral out of a discussion about Nike.
Nike shoes (and clothes I guess) are assembled by children in third world countries, earning less than $5 a day.

Go to a shop in your city and check the price tags on these shoes to get a rough idea of Nike's profit margin. This is how nike can afford to offer such a "generous" warranty. And be assured that this warranty has more to do with marketing efforts than with good faith of nike management.

I think you're being a little too sensitive about the term "Third World". Granted, it's developed all sorts of strange connotations over the years and maybe is best avoided, but it might be useful to go back to the original definition before you get all worked up.

Extremism is always bad regardless of what it refers to, hence the word EXTREMISM. Not so fast, buster. Sure, they don't like the fact that we're technically open to other religions, despite printing "In God We Trust" on our currency and making witnesses swear on the Bible in courts of law, and we change a pledge to include the words "under God".
But guess what! Turns out former President George H. W. Bush is so full of religious tolerance, he states that Atheists are not citizens and not patriots.
And he's not even the religious one in the family!

Here's a very simplified list of why they hate us:
1. US Foreign policy has always been: "what's in it for us?" and we make many deals and decisions that affect the middle east negatively.
2. We claim to love democracy, but we help overthrow democratic governments if we think the replacement will be more benefitial to us, even when the replacement is a dictator deals with terrorists in order to get our oil fix.
4. We don't want to seem soft, so when we're hit by an ally, we strike back at a former ally who's now an enemy with a debilitated military which made him an easy target. In the words of Chris Rock: "If they were such a threat to us, how come it only took us two weeks to take over the whole f**king country?!"

I think that speaks volumes as to the usefulness of LLNL's research. After all, it's been 10 years, and there are still no hydrogen-powered cars available for purchase by consumers. Furthermore, there is extremely little research needed in the area; hydrogen conversion kits were developed by numerous companies and individuals decades ago.

Why no hydrogen cars? Well, it could have something to do with hydrogen being a net-loss fuel; it takes more energy to make than it provides. But hey, Dubya loves it. Why? Well, you can extract hydrogen from natural gas(which pollutes just as much as burning natural gas, but it moves the emissions out of sight of the consumer, yay!)

I'll stop ranting when my nation's defense budget isn't the largest in the world several times over both in total and per capita- we spend OVER 50% of our budget on "defense" and our budget is larger than our top 3 potential enemies -combined-. Those are 2001 stats, mind you- and the defense budget has only gone up.

Well, putting aside the Mexican-American war, don't forget that General Pershing marched into Mexico with his troops in 1914 during the Mexican revolution. I don't think the US is on the verge of invading Mexico right now, but the Foreign Affairs crowd is much more concerned about Mexico than most people probably realize. Don't forget that Clinton bailed out their economy in 1995. Steve Forbes also called Mexican immigration a "safety valve for domestic dicontent in Mexico". For now massive illegal immigration, billion dollar bailouts and so forth have prevented problems needing more extreme measures from US business interests- although there has been militancy in Northern Mexico, as well as of course the Zapatistas in the South. US business interests would not allow these groups to take over, period.

I can assure you that the US had a very active hand in Italian politics after World War II, from the WWII invasion of Italy, to the 1948 elections to the 1960's and 1970's and beyond. PCI (the Italian Communist Party) won over one third of the vote in 1976, losing to the Christian Democrats by a few points, you can be sure that the US would not have sat back and watched an Italian socialist/communist coalition ally with the Warsaw pact, just as a communist revolution in France in May of 1968 would not have been allowed. As all of the diplomatic correspondence released afterward openly states.
