Something feels a little off here.
Joshua, a self-described ''white hat'' security researcher, said he was motivated by a desire to improve online security. He first contacted PTV by email on Boxing Day, but received no response. He later contacted Fairfax Media.
Schoolboy hacks Public Transport Victoria website
The Age is owned by Faitax Media.
Boxing Day in Australia is a public holiday.
It's a very strange time of year for an sixteen year old kid to be trying to gain the attention of anyone in or out of government. People are on vacation. Offices are closed or very thinly staffed...
Unauthorized access to systems and data --- white hat or black hat hacking --- is a crime under Australian law.
The end doesn't justify the means.

Re:And this is somehow supposed to be a surprise?
That's repetition, not contradiction. I say there is no proof in science, then I say there is no proof in science. Though, in your defense, I made a typo: I should have capitalized "logic" as "Logic", so perhaps that threw you off
That's not what you said, and changing 'logic' to 'Logic' makes no difference. You are first claiming that math is not science, which is wrong.
It is, and I did, because it's not (though to be fair, I didn't specify a "natural science". One could argue that any body of knowledge is a science, but let's stick to natural sciences, else we could include just about anything, like the "science" of sewing or numerology).
Next you are claiming that "logic" is a field of science or subject of science, which is absolutely wrong (take an entry level Philosophy class if you are that lost).
I didn't. Find me quoted as saying "logic is science" and I'll mail you a Kennedy half dollar. Everything I said is all right up there ^^^.
Lastly, you claim that no other field of science has proven anything which is also wrong.
That's true, despite your assertions otherwise. And again, this is natural science we're talking about. The natural sciences don't prove things because there is no one final end-all, be-all fact to find about any given aspect of the natural world. Any new evidence can modify or nullify what we have already observed.
Your next paragraph seems rather incoherent, so let me get this straight. You don't agree that we can ever prove evolution, so I guess the work that we have done on genetics proving large portions of the complete theory are not proven.
We can't, because theories are provable in the same way the number 9 is salty to the touch. It doesn't make sense. What is the "complete theory" of Evolution? Which fact, once discovered, will close the books on ToE so we never have to study it anymore? That we have such a large body of knowledge about evolution is what makes it such a strong theory, one of the strongest theories of the natural world we have. There's still no proof of anything in there, though.
Hrm, something is wrong with that line of thinking.
In your gravity example, by your own thoughts you must accept Newton's Law as factual.
No, I accept it as a law, and I accept that it, like all scientific laws, only apply in limited conditions and limited circumstances. Newton's Law it only applies in weak gravitational fields. At subatomic levels or in immense gravity fields, for example, Newton's Law is invalid. But it still is immensely useful in day to day life, like predicting eclipses or firing missiles at Iraqi weddings.
The people that started looking at merging Einstein's work and Newton's work were heathens and of course those guys that showed where Einstein's work fails are simply blasphemous!
Einstein is the people who merged Einstein's work with Newton's work, and he called it the Theory of General Relativity. (As an agnostic, I guess he technically was also a heathen.) There is no blasphemy in science, only in religion. I'm beginning to suspect you are secretly an intelligent design proponent.
And of course any theory we have of gravity, even when it does not work, must be proven by your way of thinking.
That's something you just made up about me, especially in light of the fact that I must have said about 30 times already that theories are unprovable by their very nature, and can be completely undermined by even a single piece of evidence that contradicts all previous observations. Also, what I said about Newton's Law about two paragraphs up.
Your failure to contemplate theories of gravity in relation to evolutio

Re:Daylight Saving Time
Actually, it was originally "seasonal time", but the British now call it "Summer Time" and the Americans (along with Australians, most Russians, Canadians, Israelis, etc.) call it something equivalent to "Daylight Saving Time". The French call it "Advanced Time".

Weather prediction? Are you kidding me? There have been enormous gains in weather prediction. A 300 nmi zone for a hurricane 3 days out 20 years ago is now a 100 km zone. A 5 day forecast today is as accurate as a 2 day forecast 20 years ago.

Or This. Check out the API section. You'll have to drill down a couple of times.
No, I don't work for them, but I use the freebee version on my website. You'd have to pay if you were a company (especially the BCC), but it's only a few hundred bucks a year. Certainly less than paying 100 hours for a developer.

Re:"News for Nerds" indeed
Eclipse start time: 4:56PM Eastern
No idea where you got that link from, but as the Fine Article says, the eclipse actually "begins at 6:36 p.m. EDT (2236 GMT) in southern China." And it takes some time for it to move eastward from there to the US; it didn't start where I am until some time around 7:00pm CDT (8:00pm EDT). While I didn't depend on
/. to tell me about the eclipse, if I did, I would've been informed in time. -

Congratulations Slashdot. You've taken an astronomical phenomenon predicted decades in advance, which last occurred in the U.S. 18 years ago, and informed your membership of it a half hour after it began. But hey, we learned immediately that Zuckerberg got married; that's what's important to nerds, right? -

Re:Very generous stipend
While it may get your name on the big stage, isn't a ton of money. Normal internships I worked for my engineering degree started mid May, ended mid August. So lets say May 16 - August 19, which is 95 days. You'll probably only work 5/7ths of those days or ~67 days, 8 hours a day for 536 hours.
Or around $10 an hour. Now, most certainly if you're good you can deliver it in much less time. But at the same time. $10/hour is what I made after my freshmen year in 2002. I think I was making around $19-20/hr by 2004 the year before my senior year.
That was for Mechanical Engineering. I'm not sure if paid internships for CS majors pay that much or if you even have internships like those in engineering. But to me, that just doesn't seem like a ton of money. But like I said, you do get your name forever etched into a project and on Google's website.

Re:latest news: will vent reactor #3 into torus
Hmm SSW in Tokyo. Lets hope the operators have the freedom to wait for a westerly.

Re:There I fixed it
Hmm, the reason it looks relatively dull is because it was taken in early to mid-March, when the Sun would be only around 35 degrees in altitude (at noon). The same shot in mid-summer (when the sun reaches the high 50s in altitude over Ireland) would look much more vivid.
I've not been to Ireland, but here's a picture taken at 13:08 on 24th February in London (29* solar noon altitude, here). The colours are reasonably accurate (I think that's taken with the camera's default setting). When you get a bright, clear day here it's surprising how vivid everything looks.

Re:Why stop at 2 hours?
http://www.timeanddate.com/news/time/russia-winter-time.html
:"I have made a decision to cancel the move back to 'winter' time starting from autumn this year", Russian president Dmitry Medvedev said on Tuesday, February 8, 2011. The new legislation eliminates the yearly switch between standard time and daylight saving time.
I totally agree, and I love the fact that Russia just "did it". Maybe other European countries won't be so scared if they can follow the lead instead of taking charge themselves so that we can finally end the nonsense.
Oh and by the way I live in Norway, were DST has a pretty strong effect on the sunlight. Just about every autumn the DST is discussed in the media, because people are so sick and tired of messing up their day rhythm. We don't care about the sunlight, we adapt, but changing the time is brutal on the sleep pattern.

Re:Wow, who wrote this summary?
here in Scotland, where I live, on the winter solstice dawn will be at 0943hrs whereas Londoners see the sunrise a whole 40mins earlier. Twilight will last longer the farther north one is as well so it won't be fully light until around 1000Hrs.
If Scotland does vote not to adopt the new timezone - all computer systems will have to be changed to reflect the new TZ data. It still pisses me off that Fedora Linux does not recognise "Edinburgh" as a capital when selecting the TZ during installation but it does recognise USA state capitals.

Re:Less prozac needed?
The current non adjusted BST time makes it unpleasent to leave work at 5pm in the dark for the larger population during the middle of winter.
An extra hour adjusted would eg change the sunset from 4pm to 5pm in the London area on 1st of January.
After February or earlier than November would this extra hour mean a more "happy" population with that extra light for their own personal/family time? Would the NHS dispense less Prozac?

Re:Typical east coast sensibilities
OOops. Messed up the calculations with time. 6AMWest Coast == 9AMET, so it's 11PM in Japan and 10PM in Hong Kong --unlike what I stated for them, it's not very comfortable for the IP-starving Asians at all, and pretty much nerd-food that isn't relevant to the monetary interests of the apparent target timezones --the snail-pace-adopter giants of the USA. Solar eclipses
I'd count dating historical observations of solar eclipses as forensic astronomy, and I think was done well before 30 years ago. Here are some examples.
There are also celestial alignments of pyramids and stone circles - although it would have to be a stellar alignment to count, as the sun doesn't change its path over historical times.

Fine. I did a Google search for time zones. Took the first link it returned http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/

I live at 5 degrees east. Thus, I know that because I'm at GMT+1, the sun will be exactly in the south at 12:40 PM.

There's no real point in timezones. Everyone should use UTC. After the shock of having to go in at "10pm", you'll get used to it. Or Internet Time
